THIRD-STRING QB CASE KEENUM GUIDES BEARS TO BLOWOUT OF EAGLES

Case Keenum passed for 247 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score and the Chicago defense generated three takeaways to lift the host Bears to a 27-7 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.

With franchise quarterback Caleb Williams out due to a strained hamstring and backup Tyson Bagent recovering from a concussion, Keenum made his first NFL appearance since December 2023, when he was with the Houston Texans.

Keenum shined on an efficient opening drive, going 5-for-6 for 45 yards and an 8-yard scoring pass to Luther Burden III. He finished 24 of 34 through the air with no interceptions for Chicago (2-1).

The Eagles (2-1), down 10-7 at halftime, punted on their first three possessions of the third quarter, gaining just 7 yards as the Bears increased their edge to 20-7. Philadelphia drove into Bears territory on its next drive, but T.J. Edwards intercepted Jalen Hurts on fourth-and-5 from the Chicago 46 with 27 seconds left in the third period.

Chicago took over and sealed the game with a 13-play, 58-yard drive that took 8:04 and culminated with a 1-yard Keenum touchdown run. Keenum’s first rushing TD since 2019 gave the Bears a 20-point advantage.

Hurts wound up 16-for-25 for 153 yards and an interception, and he added a rushing TD. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley gained 82 yards on 15 carries, while teammate DeVonta Smith had six receptions for 65 yards.

D’Andre Swift rushed 20 times for 84 yards to spark the Chicago ground game. Kalif Raymond had six catches for 90 yards and a TD.

Philadelphia sputtered in the early going, punting on its first possession before a Tank Bigsby fumble set the Bears up at the Eagles’ 15-yard line. However, Chicago turned the ball over on downs, with Keenum passing incomplete for Burden on fourth-and-goal from the 3.

The Eagles responded with a 12-play, 95-yard drive but didn’t score. With Hurts undergoing evaluation in the medical tent after taking a late hit on the sideline, backup Andy Dalton had a pass intercepted by Dillon Thieneman in the end zone with 6:14 left in the second quarter.

Cairo Santos kicked a 29-yard field goal on the next drive to extend Chicago’s lead to 10-0. The Eagles got on the board with Hurts’ 1-yard scoring run as time expired on the second quarter. Philadelphia moved 67 yards in eight plays and 1:52, with officials ruling the Eagles got the snap off just in time.

Philadelphia committed 10 penalties, surpassing its total from the first two games.

GIANTS ACQUIRE QUARTERBACK J.J. MCCARTHY FROM THE VIKINGS FOR A 2027 FIFTH-ROUND PICK

The New York Giants acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, adding another young player at the most important position in football less than a week after learning Jaxson Dart would be out for at least the rest of the regular season.

The Vikings announced the trade Monday pending McCarthy passing a physical. Dart had surgery last week on his left knee after getting injured early in a loss at the Los Angeles Rams.

Jameis Winston started and the Giants beat Tennessee on Sunday, despite not scoring a touchdown and having just 238 yards of offense. Coach John Harbaugh said afterward that Winston would get the nod again this Sunday against Arizona but hinted that the Giants were not content to stand pat in Dart’s absence.

“The plans are the plans,” Harbaugh said. “The opportunities that you have are the opportunities you have. No matter what, we’re going to do everything we can to make our team as strong as we can based on what options we have.”

The first opportunity turned out to be adding McCarthy, the 10th pick in the 2024 draft who lost the starting job in Minnesota to Kyler Murray and fell behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart. McCarthy started 10 games last season, completing 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

McCarthy missed what would have been his rookie season after injuring his right knee. He was picked a year ahead of Dart, but each was born in 2003, with McCarthy being just four months older.

NFL ASKS HOMELAND SECURITY TO TAKE DOWN VIDEO OF HALL OF FAMER BRIAN DAWKINS

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has asked the Department of Homeland Security to take down a video on social media showing highlights of Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins in reference to a purported caravan of immigrants approaching the U.S. border.

The video posted on Sunday shows Dawkins’ pregame walkout as he chants “The time has come,” followed by a series of big hits. The DHS post includes the caption “Our time has come.”

“The league has requested the DHS take down the video,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Monday.

Dawkins was a nine-time Pro Bowler and five time All-Pro safety during 16 NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos before retiring in 2011.

BUCCANEERS QB BAKER MAYFIELD (THUMB) OUT AT LEAST 3 WEEKS

A dislocated thumb late in Sunday’s game will keep Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield out for a minimum of three weeks, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Monday.

Mayfield underwent an MRI Monday morning that showed no additional damage after his injury Sunday, ESPN reported.

Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels finished Sunday’s 23-16 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and he will assume the starting spot beginning with a Week 4 matchup Sunday at home against the Green Bay Packers, Bowles said. With the loss, Tampa Bay dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Mayfield was injured following a wild scramble and throw as he was hit by the Vikings’ Blake Cashman and intercepted by Andrew Van Ginkel with 1:39 remaining. Mayfield was 17-of-34 passing for 217 yards and one touchdown along with his interception.

Daniels, 23, went 0-for-3 with an interception in his NFL debut. The Los Angeles-area native went undrafted out of Kansas.

Sunday will be the first game Mayfield has missed since he joined the Buccaneers in 2023 and end his run of 57 consecutive starts for the team.

REPORT: PACKERS SIGNING VETERAN OL MEKHI BECTON

The Green Bay Packers are signing offensive lineman Mekhi Becton after a Monday workout, ESPN reported.

The former first-round pick will join the practice squad as the Packers (1-2) prepare for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay.

Becton, 27, was released by the Los Angeles Chargers in March to clear nearly $10 million in salary cap space.

The 6-foot-7, 363-pound veteran played in 15 games (14 starts) for the Chargers in 2025.

REPORT: DOLPHINS RB DE’VON ACHANE (ACL) OUT FOR SEASON

Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane will miss the rest of the season after tearing his left ACL in Sunday’s loss to Kansas City, ESPN reported Monday.

Achane, 24, sustained the knee injury on his third rushing attempt in the 24-10 setback against the Chiefs in Miami Gardens, Fla. He hobbled off the field after being tackled awkwardly by safety Alohi Gilman.

“To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment, but I can’t give you any other details until I have them,” Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said after the game.

Achane finished with 17 yards rushing on three carries, and no receptions on one target. For the season, he has rushed for 127 yards on 34 attempts with no touchdowns in three games. He has seven catches for 49 yards and no scores.

Second-year pro Ollie Gordon replaced Achane as the lead back for the Dolphins (0-3) and rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Achane posted career highs with 1,350 rushing yards and 1,838 yards from scrimmage and made his first Pro Bowl last season. A third-round pick by Miami in 2023, he has 4,510 yards from scrimmage and 35 touchdowns through 47 career games (39 starts).

THIS COULD BE MLB’S LAST POSTSEASON FOR A WHILE WITH A LOCKOUT LOOMING, PLAYERS VOWING TO FIGHT CAP

NEW YORK (AP) — Days before the start of what could be Major League Baseball’s last postseason for a while, Carlos Rodón was prepared for a long lockout if owners keep their salary cap proposal on the bargaining table.

“We won’t play. I’m going to be frank with you,” the New York Yankees pitcher said. “I’m not worried about it. They should be worried about it. There’s a lot of money on us playing baseball. That’s why they pay us a lot.”

Baseball’s five-year labor contract expires Dec. 1 and management is expected to impose a lockout that would stop trades and free-agent signings, then potentially threaten the start of spring training workouts on Feb. 9 and opening day on March 24.

When management last proposed a cap, it sparked a 7 1/2-month strike in 1994 and ’95 that led to the first cancellation of the World Series in 90 years. MLB says a cap is needed to alleviate economic disparity, highlighting that no low-revenue team has won the title since the 2015 Kansas City Royals.

“The salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field, allowing us greater flexibility to address longstanding player priorities while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50/50,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said.

Owners would also gain more financial certainty with a cap, which likely would spark an increase in franchise values.

Players point out teams with low payrolls, Milwaukee and Tampa Bay, had the best regular-season records in their leagues this season.

“Despite MLB claiming they need a salary cap because small-market teams supposedly have no hope, we see Milwaukee with the best record in baseball for the second straight year and Tampa with the best record in the AL,” union head Bruce Meyer said. “Milwaukee, of course, is 30th out of 30 in our market-size rankings.”

While this would be MLB’s 10th work stoppage, the sport hasn’t lost any regular-season games since the 1994-95 strike. Baseball players say they will never accept a cap similar to those that have been in the NFL since 1994, the NBA since 1984-85 and the NHL since 2005-06. Nine of the 10 biggest sports contracts by total value in North America belong to MLB players.

“For me the biggest thing is doing right for the generations forward because the generations before me, for the decades before, they’ve fought for our rights today,” Baltimore first baseman Pete Alonso said. “That’s a sacrifice that not just myself but other men around the league are willing to fight for and put up with.”

Salary cap would cut highest salaries

MLB’s proposal would cap team spending next year at $245.3 million, using figures for luxury tax payrolls that include $20.1 million for benefits and the pre-arbitration bonus pool. It also would establish a payroll floor of $171.2 million for 2027 but teams could drop as low as $154.1 million and make up the difference over the following two years. The New York Mets’ opening day payroll in 2026 was over $352 million.

Contracts would be limited by service time: $500 million and 12 years for those yet to make major league debuts down to $265 million and six years for free-agent-eligible players. It would outlaw megadeals like outfielder Juan Soto’s record $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets.

While MLB proposed to split revenues 50-50, the union says that would lead to a massive decrease in money to players because of the way revenues and expenses are defined and the player portion is calculated. In addition, an escrow provision to set salaries aside in case the players’ defined revenue share is above 50% means money in guaranteed contracts could be forfeited.

MLB as part of a cap system would agree to drop service time for free agent eligibility for some players from six years of service to five and to eliminate qualifying offers, but the union maintains that would shift money among players under a cap rather than increase spending.

Cost of lost regular-season games would be enormous

Alonso would lose $165,775 next year for each regular-season day missed and Rodón would forfeit $144,385.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani would give up $374,331 daily and Soto $227,273.

At the other end of the salary scale, players making MLB’s proposed $900,000 minimum would lose $4,813 daily.

Some players are protected financially because of signing bonuses that will continue to be paid during a work stoppage: Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is due $14 million on June 30 as part of his $325 million contract, though he would give up $74,866 daily in salary.

Union leadership changed in February

Tony Clark, the former All-Star first baseman who headed the union since 2013, was forced out in February and replaced by Meyer, his deputy and chief negotiator in 2021-22.

Baltimore pitcher Chris Bassitt, a member of the union’s eight-man executive subcommittee, said there had been a transformation this year in communications within the players’ association. The subcommittee and the 30 team player representatives form the executive council that makes union decisions.

“Our last CBA from a player’s side was not internally handled great. I think the structure was very archaic, so to speak, like an old-school approach,” he said. “We have made it our mission to kind of get all 30 clubs — 30 reps that genuinely care. And then not just 30 reps that genuinely care, but 30 reps that are making sure all their players are very informed.”

There was a split in vote to accept deal in 2022

When players and MLB agreed to a deal on March 10, 2022, that ended the lockout, the executive subcommittee voted 8-0 against accepting it, but the team player representatives favored the agreement by 26-4.

The vast majority of the 1,200 players on 40-man rosters when the lockout starts will not have salary arbitration or free agency rights and will have 2027 salaries under $1 million.

“Their voices matter, what they’re feeling, what they’re thinking,” Bassitt said. “When I came in the league it was — I’m going to say it plainly — but it was like: `Rookie shut up and sit in the corner and the veterans are going to take care of this.’ I don’t think that’s a possible avenue to go down anymore. I think the league’s too young, first and foremost. Second, I think the only way to have veteran guys that are informed and understand the process is to start the education process from day one.”

Postseason history: The last time the White Sox were in the postseason, they squared off with the Astros in the 2021 ALDS, a series that Houston won in four games. More memorably, it’s also a rematch of the 2005 World Series. Chicago captured the franchise’s first championship since 1917 by way of a four-game sweep over Houston, at the time in the National League. 

Keys to the matchup: The vast majority of White Sox hitters are getting their first taste of the postseason, and a number of them struggled down the stretch of the regular season. Can they turn the page in October? Since Aug. 1, Munetaka Murakami (.154) and Colson Montgomery (.158) have two of the lowest batting averages in the Majors among qualified hitters. Both players were as responsible as anyone for the team’s revelatory early-season success. Even amid their respective slumps, Murakami and Montgomery are capable of changing a game with one swing. The slugging Murakami exceeded expectations for his rookie season while launching 35 home runs, while Montgomery has 31 long balls.

Player to watch: Yordan Alvarez. For a six-week stretch bridging August into September, the American League MVP frontrunner looked mortal. That is no longer the case. Alvarez entered play on Sunday hitting .400 with four home runs and a 1.300 OPS across his last 11 games. He was leading all qualified hitters with a .316 batting average, .604 slugging percentage and a 1.036 OPS while bopping 42 home runs and 34 doubles. Alvarez is also a fantastic postseason player, owning a .944 OPS in 60 playoff games — a track record that includes a few franchise-defining home runs. It will also be fascinating to see how the White Sox pitch Alvarez: How often will they challenge him?

Keys to the matchup: The Rivalry was a tale of two halves this season. The Yankees won four of the first five games before the Red Sox found their stride, then Boston swept four home games in June just before its historic 15-game winning streak. New York wrapped things up by taking three of four back at home at the end of August, outscoring the Sox, 26-9. The Bronx Bombers used their bread and butter — the home run — to overpower their rivals. But both clubs can really spin it, making for an intriguing playoff matchup. The Yankees and Red Sox are both in the top three in MLB in team ERA.

Player to watch: Aaron Judge. The Captain has had a frustrating year, missing 84 games over the summer with a rib injury. He returned in early September, only to head back to the IL with a calf strain after seven games. Judge is planning to play in the Wild Card Series, but nothing is certain. Even if he hasn’t been his typical MVP self this season when on the field, and even if he’s not at 100% in the postseason, Judge will still transform the Yankees’ lineup. Much maligned for his postseason performance over the years, Judge shook that trend in 2025. He hit .500 in seven games, including four hits in three games against the Red Sox.

Seasons series: Atlanta handled Philadelphia in the regular season, going 9-4 in 13 head-to-head meetings. That’s no small part why the Braves won the NL East rather comfortably. 

Postseason history: These NL East rivals have met in three prior postseason series, and all three have gone in Philadelphia’s favor. That includes in 2022 and 2023, when the Phillies — as a Wild Card — upended the division-winning Braves. In ‘22, the onslaught helped kickstart a run to the World Series. 

Keys to the matchup: How will the Phillies cobble together their pitching plans? A four-game losing skid at the end of the regular season pressed Zack Wheeler into action in Game 162, and while Wheeler delivered six strong innings to punch a postseason berth, it certainly came at a cost. One of baseball’s elite hurlers will not be on full rest at any point during the Wild Card Series. Then there’s left-hander Jesús Luzardo, who pitched a 1-2-3 inning on Sunday in his first appearance since Sept. 7 following an IL stint due to inflammation in his left shoulder. No one knows how many innings he’ll be able to throw moving forward. That leaves Philadelphia with some combination of All-Star lefty Cristopher Sánchez — who won’t be on full rest until Wednesday — rookie Andrew Painter, and veteran Aaron Nola, who had an ill-fated start on short rest on Saturday. The bullpen’s struggles have only compounded matters: Since Sept. 1, Phillies relievers have combined for a 5.79 ERA that ranks last in the Majors.

Player to watch: Chris Sale. The All-Star left-hander continues to defy Father Time, pitching to a 2.16 ERA in 27 regular-season starts while reaping the benefits of a significant velocity uptick. This will be Sale’s first postseason appearance since 2021 and his first with the Braves, as a back injury prevented him from pitching in the 2024 Wild Card Series. While the addition of Tyler Mahle at the Trade Deadline provided Atlanta with a reliable No. 2 option behind Sale, so much of the club’s success is still predicated on Sale setting the tone. Can he do that in Game 1? On paper, the matchup is favorable: Sale has stymied Philadelphia’s two lefty sluggers, Bryce Harper (2-for-21) and Kyle Schwarber (2-for-25).

Postseason history: This is a rematch of the 2025 NL Wild Card Series, which featured the Cubs and Padres squaring off at Wrigley Field. The Cubs pulled out the win in a tense, low-scoring series, winning Game 1 and Game 3 by identical scores of 3-1 around a 3-0 loss in Game 2.

Keys to the matchup: This series likely hinges on whether the Padres’ starting pitchers can safely deliver leads to their bullpen. With Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller on the back end, San Diego has a strong chance of holding onto any late edge. But can Michael King, Nick Pivetta (recently returned from a lengthy injury absence) and Co. hold down the Cubs’ offense? Chicago leads MLB in OPS at .765 and leads the NL with 218 home runs, so it won’t be an easy task for Padres pitching. Cubs starters have had their own issues, though — the rotation’s 4.27 ERA is tied for 18th in MLB — and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill are among the key Padres hitters getting hot at the right time.

Player to watch: Pete Crow-Armstrong. All eyes will be on the presumptive NL MVP in this series after Crow-Armstrong put up a season for the ages, becoming the seventh member of the 40-40 club while playing flat-out elite defense in center field. He didn’t do much offensively in his first taste of the postseason in 2025, going a combined 5-for-27 (.185) with a .399 OPS between the Wild Card Series and the NLDS, but PCA has leveled up his hitting considerably this season. His rare combination of power and speed makes him a major threat to change the game with one swing, and it’s often his first swing: Crow-Armstrong’s nine leadoff home runs rank third in MLB.

OREGON QB DANTE MOORE VOWS TO ‘BE BACK SOON’ AFTER CONCUSSION

Concussed Oregon quarterback Dante Moore posted an upbeat message to social media on Monday, vowing to “be back soon.”

Moore scrambled for a gain in the second quarter on Saturday, then slid to the turf before enduring a hit to the head from Southern California linebacker Desman Stephens II. Moore was down on the field a long time before he was stretchered off and taken to a hospital.

CT scans and an MRI showed no other issues aside from the concussion, Oregon coach Dan Lanning announced Sunday.

The officiating crew issued Stephens a targeting penalty and ejected him from the game, which the Ducks won 41-27. Trojans coach Lincoln Riley announced a day later that Stephens was suspended for the team’s upcoming game against Washington.

Moore wrote on Instagram, “To my team, the community, and to the World, thank you. These past 2 days have been very difficult, but through all of your prayers I have made progress. There’s times I question myself and the Lord and say Why now? but I quickly remember Jeremiah 29:11: ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ I can only worry about today, and making sure I give today it’s (sic) full attention. I’ll be back soon. Go Ducks!”

Lanning said of Stephens’ hit on Moore, “It’s a disgusting play. We don’t want to see it happen. It’s disappointing that it happened. I’m praying that our player’s healthy, and I’m praying that their player can learn from that situation.”

As for when Moore might return, Lanning said, “Every concussion is different and we are going to move forward with an abundance of caution to ensure we make the best decisions for Dante and his future.”

Moore, a senior, is in his second season as Oregon’s starter. Through four games this season, he has completed 69 of 99 passes for 926 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions.

In 2025-26, he connected on 71.8% of his passes for 3,565 yards, 30 TDs and 10 interceptions while leading the Ducks to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Dylan Raiola, a Nebraska transfer, took over for Moore on Saturday and went 8-for-10 for 77 yards against the Trojans.

The 15th-ranked Ducks (3-1) have a week off before playing host to 23rd-ranked UCLA (4-0) on Oct. 10.

PISTONS START CAMP WITHOUT ALL-STAR CENTER JALEN DUREN ON ROSTER, FAILING TO AGREE TO LONG-TERM DEAL

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons tipped off training camp without Jalen Duren on the roster.

Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon said last May that the team wanted to sign the All-Star center to a contract extension, but the two sides had not reached an agreement ahead of media day on Monday afternoon.

If Detroit and Duren don’t reach a deal, he has until Thursday to sign a one-year qualifying offer from the franchise.

“We are excited to have him back when he gets back,” Langdon said.

Duren became a first-time All-Star last season while averaging 20 points and 10.5 rebounds to help the Pistons win the Central Division for the first time since 2008 and earn top seeding in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

His scoring dropped dramatically in the NBA playoffs to 10.2 points, showing his limitations offensively, and that led to Detroit being pushed to a Game 7 in the first round against eighth-seeded Orlando and losing a seven-game series in the second round against Cleveland despite home-court advantage.

“I know there’s a lot of things out there being said, but he’s a huge part of what we do and where we are right now and the steps that have been taking,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “It’s all love from our standpoint.”

The 6-foot-10 center, though, is just 22 years old and can potentially develop some low-post moves and mid-range jumpers to make defenses respect him with the ball outside of the lane.

“He’s going to be a huge part of our team, regardless of the decision he does make,” Langdon said.

He was selected No. 13 overall out of Memphis in 2022 by Charlotte, and Detroit acquired him in a draft-night trade. He averaged 11-plus points a game over his first three seasons in the league and and grabbed a career-high 11.6 rebounds in his second season.

The Pistons recently invested in another player who is also limited offensively, but he is one of the NBA’s best defenders.

They gave Ausar Thompson a five-year, $155 million contract earlier this month, extending a player the franchise picked No. 5 overall in 2023 even though he’s not a double-digit scorer.

BIG TEN ADOPTS RULE PREVENTING BASKETBALL PLAYERS FROM RETURNING AFTER LEAVING FOR PROS

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten Conference has adopted a rule to prohibit men’s and women’s basketball players who left school to play professionally from maintaining their eligibility.

The Big Ten announced Monday the unanimous adoption of a rule deeming players who signed professional contracts with the NBA, G-League or WNBA as ineligible to play for any of the conference’s schools. The rule also covers players who declared for the NBA or WNBA drafts but did not withdraw their names or declare an intent to return to college in the required timeframe.

The conference’s announcement comes as waves of student-athletes have filed lawsuits against the NCAA’s new eligibility rules allowing five years of competition over a five-year period. The new rules did not grandfather in athletes from the high school class of 2022, triggering lawsuits across the country.

AT NBA MEDIA DAYS, PLENTY OF TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE FIND NO SHORTAGE OF REASONS FOR OPTIMISM

After being on opposite sides of an NBA Finals that ended just 3 1/2 months ago, New York guard Jalen Brunson and San Antonio center Victor Wembanyama found themselves with the exact same mindsets on Monday.

As proof, consider the descriptions offered about their summer vacations.

“It was short,” Wembanyama said.

“The longest, shortest summer ever,” Brunson said.

Short offseasons are the goal for every team in the NBA — because they want to play as long as possible, like the champion Knicks and runner-up Spurs did last season. And the journey toward potential title runs have now started in earnest around the league, with media days being held for most teams on Monday and practices for everybody happening on Tuesday.

“Right now, the best team in the NBA is the New York Knicks,” Miami forward Giannis Antetokounmpo said at Heat media day Monday, tipping his cap to the reigning champions. “And they have one of the best players, Jalen Brunson. … But we’re going to do our job. We’ve got to do our job, man. If we do our job and we win games, then we’ll see.”

It’s not an unheard-of approach, obviously, but it worked wonders for the Knicks last season when they ended a 53-year title drought for the franchise.

“Not being satisfied, I think, is the biggest takeaway moving forward,” Brunson said. “You still want to figure out how you can grow as a person and as a player.”

There is no shortage of teams in the league with confidence that they can contend, especially in this era of parity — with eight different franchises having won titles in the past eight seasons. Among the key moves from recent months: Philadelphia loaded up by adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, Miami added Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson, the Toronto Raptors brought back Kawhi Leonard, LaMelo Ball headed to Minnesota and DeMar DeRozan is set to pair up with Nikola Jokic in Denver.

James — the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, entering Year 24 of his career — was asked what he can do for the 76ers.

“Whatever the team needs for me to do,” James said, wearing his new 76ers uniform in public for the first time. “I think the luxury of my game is I can do everything. Literally, I can do everything.”

And while the Eastern Conference is loaded with depth, it’s two Western Conference teams — the Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder — that are favorites to win the 2027 championship, according to most sportsbooks.

Here’s a good sign for the Thunder and a bad sign for the remainder of the NBA: “I feel like I got better this summer, for sure,” back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said at Oklahoma City media day.

Wembanyama said the Spurs grew from the pain that came with losing to the Knicks.

“I’ve had a few sleepless nights; maybe not sleepless nights, but hard to find sleep sometimes or hard emotions. Haunting, sometimes,” Wembanyama said. “But there’s just a point where you accept that you have to go through it and you have to feel all of it.”

At Golden State’s media day, Stephen Curry — a perennial All-Star and the league’s all-time 3-point king — said the Warriors’ expectations will remain high.

“Championship mentality is always a part of who you are, but we’re not putting that type of pressure on ourselves on Day 1,” Curry said. “Let’s figure out what good basketball looks like for this team, and we’ll figure that out as we go.”

Indiana, which lost Game 7 of the finals in 2025 to Oklahoma City, now has Tyrese Haliburton back after he missed all of last season with a torn Achilles, and that means the Pacers will also likely be among the many legit contenders in the East.

“I am healthy. I am 100%. There will be no restrictions,” Haliburton said. “That is not news. There is no source. I am the source. I’m good. I’m ready to go for the year.”

Leonard’s return to the Raptors — he led Toronto to the 2019 NBA title — came after a year where the end of his tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers was overshadowed by a salary-cap-circumvention scandal that led to massive sanctions against his now-former team such as the forfeiture of five first-round picks, a $30 million fine and a one-year banishment of owner Steve Ballmer.

“I think the best decision is to move forward and focus on my time being a Toronto Raptor,” Leonard said. “I already was a distraction for the past 70 days and wasn’t able to meet my teammates, do any of that minicamp stuff with them. Moving forward, I just want to talk about the Toronto Raptors. … I just want to focus on basketball again.”

BLUE JACKETS TRADE MARCHENKO TO MAPLE LEAFS AS PART OF MAJOR 7-PLAYER DEAL

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After saying that Kirill Marchenko would be with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the start of the season, general manager Don Waddell dealt the forward as part of a major seven-player deal to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday as NHL teams were finalizing their opening week rosters.

The Blue Jackets also dealt goaltender Elvis Merzlikins and left wing Miles Wood to the Maple Leafs for left wing Matthew Knies, defenseman Emil Andrae, center Steven Lorentz and a conditional second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Marchenko was in the last year of his contract, but agreed to a six-year $75 million extension with the Maple Leafs. He relayed to Columbus’ front office before the draft in June that he didn’t intend to sign an extension with the Blue Jackets.

Waddell said the situation with Marchenko and star defenseman Zach Werenski were not the same. The Norris Trophy winner also said during the offseason he wasn’t ready to sign an extension, but also vetoed a trade to the Dallas Stars.

“I’ve had discussions with his agent, which we won’t discuss right now, but Marchenko’s going to be a Blue Jackets when the season starts,” Waddell said on July 2.

The 26-year old Russian was a second-round pick by the Blue Jackets in the 2018 draft. He didn’t make his NHL debut until 2022, but tied or led the team in scoring the past three seasons.

Marchenko had a team-high 27 goals last season and was second in points with 67. He had 102 goals and 208 points during his four seasons in Columbus.

In Knies, the Blue Jackets get a forward who battled injuries last season, but still finished with a career-best 66 points, including 23 goals. He is expected to be on one of the top two scoring lines.

The 23-year-old Knies was previously viewed as an important piece of Toronto’s future. He had a career-high 29 goals and 58 points in 2024-25 playing on a line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.

“Matthew is a big, strong power forward who combines tough, hard-nosed physical play with outstanding offensive skills,” Waddell said in a statement after the trade was announced. “He is a young player with great character and work ethic and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the Blue Jackets family.”

Merzlikins is currently on long-term injured reserve with a shoulder injury. He had a 14-11-3 record with a 3.40 goals-against average and .993 save percentage in 30 appearances last season as a backup to Blue Jackets starter Jet Greaves.

Wood, recently put on waivers, has 99 goals and 97 assists in 567 career games with New Jersey, Colorado and Columbus.

Lorentz, a Stanley Cup winner with the Florida Panthers in 2024, had 15 goals and 22 assists over two seasons in Toronto.

Andrae ended a very short tenure in Toronto. He was acquired in a June trade with Philadelphia. Andrae had three goals and 17 assists over 107 games with the Flyers, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NHL draft.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team (9-2, 2-0 Big Ten) ran off seven-straight victories to close out an outstanding month of September. That includes a pair of sweeps over UCLA and Maryland to begin the league campaign 2-0 for the second-straight year. The month of October will kick things up a notch as head coach Steve Aird takes his team on the road for seven of 10 contests over the next five weeks.

A balanced offense has been the key to IU’s successful start to the 2026 campaign. All five of IU’s most commonly used primary attackers (Jager, Boersema, Granberry, Snowbarger and Gray) are averaging at least 1.83 kills per set this year. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum (3.00 kps) and third-year opposite hitter Avery Daum (1.50 kps) have each made spot starts with no drop off.

Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is at the center of the whole operation. She’s top five in the Big Ten in both assists per set (10.79) and aces per set (0.49). The Hoosiers are third in the conference in team hitting percentage (.297) among games in Big Ten play only. The Serbian is closing in on becoming the 12th player in program history to reach the 2,000-assist threshold.

IU will face its stiffest test of the season on Thursday (Oct. 1) evening as it visits Madison to face top-10 Wisconsin in a primetime matchup on the Big Ten Network. WELCOME BACK: Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum was made eligible to play ahead of Big Ten action and made her season debut against Maryland on Saturday. She had 10 kills and six blocks, the 60th match of her career with double-digit kills. Tatum is one of six IU players with 10+ kills in a match this year.

STARTING HOT: For the first time in over 35 years, the Hoosiers have started 2-0 in Big Ten play in consecutive seasons. IU picked up wins over UCLA and Maryland last week to start the conference campaign. Head coach Steve Aird’s group opened 2025 at 5-0 in league play before suffering the first setback.

GET HER GOING: Over the past two seasons, second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager has been a catalyst in the offense. When she records at least 15 kills, the Hoosiers are 12-0 in those 12 games. That includes a 4-0 mark this year which is highlighted by her 20-kill performance against NC State in non-conference action.

ALL OVER: Third-year Ella Boersema has been IU’s most versatile player this season. She has six matches with double-digit kills including 21 combined in wins over UCLA and Maryland. Boersema has done that while playing as an opposite hitter (4) and a middle blocker (2). She’s hitting a team-best .368 on the year.

PICKING UP: After a tough season opener at Louisville, IU’s offense hit at a combined .285 clip in the month of September. The Hoosiers went 9-1 in those matches and hit above .330 on five different occasions. IU heads into the weekend’s action having hit .350 or better in four of the last six games.

END THE STREAK: IU will have the chance to end a pair of long losing streaks over the next few weeks. The Hoosiers have lost 19-straight matches against Wisconsin, the second-longest active streak against any Big Ten program for IU. The Hoosiers ended a long run to Penn State last year and will look to do the same in Madison.

ALL INVOLVED: Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is closing in on becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. She’s less than 400 away as she continues to set the Hoosiers at an elite offensive rate. The Serbian is averaging 10.74 assists per set in her career at IU.

TALLYING WINS: Since the 2022 campaign (four-plus years), Indiana has racked up 86 wins under head coach Steve Aird. That includes at least 15 wins in each full season during that stretch. IU will be looking to reach that plateau again for the fifth-straight year in 2026.

TOUCH OF HOME: Fourth-year setter Luca Fickell will return to what is now her new home in Madison this week. The daughter of Wisconsin head football coach Luke Fickell has a pair of brothers on the Badger football team and got to visit Madison on September 12th for the team’s win over Western Illinois.

BIG BLOCK: Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry has stepped her game up in the last weeks. She enters the week eighth in the Big Ten in blocks per set (1.26). Granberry has her hitting percentage climbing to .299 and is producing a career high 2.79 points per set.

Scouting the Opponent

Wisconsin (8-4, 2-0 Big Ten)

• The Badgers have battled through injuries and a gauntlet of a schedule to begin the Big Ten campaign at 2-0 with top-25 wins over Oregon and Purdue. With the addition of freshman opposite hitter Decelise Champion, Wisconsin has finally settled into a starting lineup.

• The show starts and ends with junior setter Charlie Fuerbringer. She is averaging 11.29 assists per set and 2.14 digs per set. She returned from injury in last year’s contest against IU as Wisconsin got fully back into rhythm enroute to an appearance in the national semifinals.

• With Champion on the right side, freshman outside hitter Audrey Flanagan (3.15 kills per set) and senior outside hitter Eva Travis (2.98 kills per set) have gotten more comfortable hitting from the left. Freshman middle blocker Lynney Tarnow is hitting at nearly a .400 clip.

Wisconsin

• Since Kelly Sheffield took over the Wisconsin program in 2013, it has consistently been one of the best in the country. In that period, they’ve also dominated IU in the all-time series. He is 19-0 against the Hoosiers during his stint in Madison.

• Wisconsin has won 19 matches in a row with IU’s last win coming back in 2012. IU has won just one set in the last 10 matches. The Hoosiers came within a series of points of forcing a fifth set in 2022. IU had two set points to force a fifth before Wisconsin stormed back for the 3-1 win in Madison.

Quincy Porter’s season is over before it began, as the Notre Dame wide receiver will have surgery to address a knee injury.

Porter transferred from Ohio State but has not played in 2026 due to lingering problems with his left knee.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Porter recently had a setback in his recovery.

“Tough  news for him,” Freeman said. “He’s a great young man that has really done everything right. He’s got another setback, but his mind is in the right place. He’ll be back at some point here before we know it.”News

Porter, a five-star recruit in the high school Class of 2025, played in five games for Ohio State in 2025 and caught four passes for 59 yards.

The No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-3-2, 2-2-0) are back on the road tomorrow as they take on the UIC Flames (3-4-1, 1-0-0) at 8 PM ET (7 PM CT) in Chicago.

#20 IRISH TAKE DOWN #1 STANFORD ON THE ROAD

• The No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-1-2, 2-0-0) battled to a gritty 3-1 victory at No. 1 Stanford (7-1-1, 0-1-1) on Sunday evening. The Irish advanced to a perfect 2-0 in the ACC with impressive wins at No. 17 Clemson and at No. 1 Stanford to start conference play.

• This is just Notre Dame’s third win over a top-ranked team in program history, as the Irish did it in impressive fashion on the road late Sunday night.

• This was Coach Riley’s first win over a No. 1 (he was 0-1 vs. the top team, a 2020 ACC Semifinal loss to Pitt).

• Notre Dame’s three goals at Stanford is the first time the Cardinal have allowed three goals in a match since losing 3-1 to UCLA on September 28, 2023. It is also the first regular-season loss at home for Stanford since Nov. 1, 2024.

2026 CAPTAINS

• McFarland Family Men’s Head Soccer Coach Chad Riley announced that senior midfielder Nolan Spicer, junior goalkeeper Blake Kelly, and senior midfielder Leo Brummell will serve as captains of the 2026 Notre Dame men’s soccer program this year.

• Spicer was a 2025 All-ACC Third Team honoree as the midfielder led the Irish in assists with seven (career high) and was tied for seventh in the ACC in total assists last season. He was also second on the team in points (11) off two goals and seven assists.

• Kelly started in all 20 matches for the Irish last season where he totaled 71 saves, allowing 25 goals for a .740 save percentage on the season. He finished the season with six clean sheets and recorded five or more saves in seven matches.

• Brummell is a senior midfielder, joining the Irish roster in the spring of 2025 as he now serves a captain in the 2026 season.

BALANCED ATTACK

• Ten returning Irish players registered at least one point in their Notre Dame career, as the team returns 54 points from last year.

BUTLER WOMEN’S GOLF

Butler, led by sophomore Addi Kooi, took control of the NKU Fall Invitational Monday prior to second-round play being suspended due to darkness.

Each of the 11 teams has several holes remaining in the second round and Tuesday’s play will see the teams complete the round before teeing off on the planned third and final round.

With a handful of holes remaining, the Bulldogs hold a seven-shot lead over IU Indy in the team standings.

Kooi opened the event with a 68 (-3) Monday morning and is even-par through 16 holes of the second round. She currently has a three-stroke lead over Northern Kentucky’s Eva Maley and Li Xia of IU Indy. Kooi’s scorecard featured seven birdies and an eagle over her first 34 holes.

Three other Bulldogs are among the Top 10 with play suspended Monday night – Rachel Johnson is tied for sixth (+5), while both Kylie Eaton and Samantha Von Rohr are seven-over and tied for ninth.

BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL

CLEVELAND – – For the second time this season, the Ball State women’s volleyball team has swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards with senior outside hitter Ava Smith, junior libero Sophie Ledbetter, senior setter Lindsey Green and sophomore setter Reese Axness all earning honors.

Smith was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career after leading all MAC players with a 5.67 kills-per-set average last week, while ranking third in the league with a .437 hitting percentage.

She started the week with a career-high tying 19 kills in Friday’s sweep over Western Michigan and followed with 15 more in Saturday’s. The effort helped the Cardinals lead the league with a 17.67 kills-per-set average and a .344 hitting mark. In addition, she served up a team-high four aces, while chipping in 16 digs (2.67 per set) over the weekend series.

Ledbetter earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season and the sixth time in her career after turning in a dominating backcourt effort last week, leading all MAC players with a 5.67 digs-per-set average.

She secured a match-best 17 digs in both sweeps of Western Michigan, helping the Cardinals rank first in the league with a 21.17 digs-per-set average for the week. In addition, Ledbetter earned a .963 reception percentage with just one reception error in 27 attempts, while dishing out 11 total assists.

For the second time this season and the sixth time in the past two years, Green and Axness were named the MAC Setter Pair of the Week. The duo guided the Cardinals to a MAC-leading .344 hitting percentage in a pair of sweeps over Western Michigan last week.

Green led the pair with an 8.00 assists-per-set average, while Axness averaged 5.83, helping Ball State post a league-leading 16.33 assists per set in the first weekend of MAC play. The Cardinals also led the league with a 17.67 kills-per-set average, setup by the dynamic setting duo.

Along with their offensive leadership, the pair combined for a 6.17 digs-per-set average with a 3.50 mark from Green and a 2.67 effort from Axness. The effort helped the Cardinals lead the league with a 21.17 digs-per-set average. 

The Ball State women’s volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a pivotal MAC showdown against Toledo, which was picked as the league’s preseason favorite to win both the MAC regular season and tournament titles.

Both teams are off to 2-0 league starts, with Toledo sweeping Akron and earning a 3-1 win at Buffalo last week.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State football returns home to continue Mid-American Conference play Saturday against Toledo as the Cardinals look to bounce back from a Week 4 defeat at Kent State. Head coach Mike Uremovich, along with Tyler Mizzell and Mikeah Webster, met with the media Monday to discuss the importance of moving their focus towards Toledo and conference play. 

Uremovich reiterated the team’s focus of moving past last week as Ball State hosts a strong 3-1 Toledo opponent.  

“I think we are pretty urgent every week,” Uremovich said. “I know they are not happy with the way that we played on Saturday, but I don’t think that whether we win or lose, we approach any week any differently.”

Uremovich discussed that his team is currently battling some injuries at this point in the season. Penalties remain his biggest point of concern after Ball State committed seven last week and 29 over the past three weeks.

“We’re heading into almost the midpoint of the season and we have a lot of guys out right now,” Uremovich said. “But that’s college football. Nobody is going to feel sorry for you. You have to show up and play.”

The Cardinals hope to use their depth and execution to still find ways to get the job done. 

“That’s why you recruit and practice,” Uremovich said. “You have to coach everybody because the next guy has to step up and there are going to be injuries.”

Defensively, Ball State is focused on getting the Rockets into third-and-long situations. Uremovich described that distance situations give the defense the chance to get creative with their pressure. 

Webster also emphasized the effort of the Cardinals’ defense, but said execution is needed to get the unit off of the field.

“Our effort is great. We have great players on defense,” Webster said. “But we have to work on execution, executing the plays that are called, and just get the ball down.”

For Ball State, the team understands that the competitiveness of the MAC makes each week a priority. Mizzell said the offense needs to find ways to make explosive plays to change the momentum of the game.

“When you can go out there and create explosive plays, you are going to put some points on the board,” Mizzell said. “As an offense we have to find ways to create more explosive plays and that comes with scoring more points.” Last week, while playing place of injured QB Keldric Luster, Mizzell amassed just 30 yards passing in the first half, but explosive plays helped him to accumulate 134 in the second half. He connected on 33- and 38-yard pass plays in the second half.

The Cardinals understand that the time during the week is crucial for getting prepared for Saturday at this point of their season. 

“You win the game on Saturdays, from Tuesday through Friday,” Webster said. “We have to bounce back from the losses that we’ve had, but we’re ready to go and ready to prove ourselves.”

The Cardinals are set to host Toledo at Scheumann Stadium on Oct. 3, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Broadcast will be available on ESPN+ and WLBC Radio 104.5.

MUNCIE, Ind. – As announced Monday by the Big Ten Network, the Ball State Cardinals kick off against Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 12:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. CT) for what will be the Wildcats’ second game played at their state-of-the-art New Ryan Field. Ball State and Northwestern last played each other in 2015 and meet on the gridiron for just the second time in history. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network and carried locally on the Ball State Gainbridge Radio Network.

INDIANA STATE WOMEN’S GOLF

FLORENCE, Ind. – Indiana State sits tied for fifth overall in the field at the NKU Fall Invitational through 32 completed holes on the day at the Belterra Golf Club. Sophia Florek made major strides on the day and was the only athlete to sit under par in the second round to sit tied for sixth overall in the field.

Play was delayed in the morning due to foggy conditions on the course which limited visibility and ultimately led the teams to suspend competition prior to the conclusion of the second round. Competition will resume on Tuesday morning with the shotgun start on the course at 8:30 a.m.

The Sycamores (+36) sit fifth overall in the team standings through the first day sitting ahead of Valley opponents Valparaiso (+66) and Evansville (+112), as well as Detroit Mercy (+40) and host Northern Kentucky (+47).

Second Round Recap (Play Suspended after 14 Holes)

Sophia Florek led a major surge by the Indiana State women’s golf team as the Sycamores moved up one spot in the team standings through the first 14 holes of the second round at the NKU Fall Invitational. Florek was the lone golfer under par in the second round when play was suspended due to night falling over the course.

Florek (+5) sits two-under par for the second round moving up from sitting tied for 31st after the first round to sit just outside the Top Five in the field in a tie for sixth overall. The Sycamore senior started the second round by birdie-ing both the fourth and fifth holes to open play. She followed up a bogey on the 11th by recording birdies on both the 12th and 14th holes. She wrapped up play on the first day with a bogey on the 18th to sit as the only player under par in the second round when play was suspended.

Louise Standtke (+10) was unable to keep her first-round momentum going over the second 18 as junior recorded seven bogeys over her 16 holes in the afternoon. She currently sits tied for 20th with two holes to play in the second round.

Rosalie DiNunzio (+13) birdied the third hole in her second round of the day as the senior highlighted her second turn on the course. She finished the day sitting tied for 27th overall with two holes to play in the second round.

Keira Brazeau (+16) was +10 in her second round of the day when play was suspended as the sophomore completed 15 holes in the afternoon to sit tied for 38th in the field.

Gabby Cone (+16) is also tied for 38th overall in the field after posting a +8 over 16 holes in the afternoon. She wrapped up her day with pars on her last seven holes before play was suspended as she approached the 16th tee box.

First Round Recap

Indiana State (+21) sat sixth overall in the team standings, sitting ahead of Missouri Valley foes Valparaiso (+27) and Evansville (+60) through the first 18 holes of the day played at the Belterra Golf Club in Florence, Ind.

Louise Standtke (+3, T-12) is the top overall Sycamore in the individual standings sitting just outside the top 10 after a strong opening round on the course. Standtke birdied four of her first nine holes to sit at 33 (-2) early, before a triple bogey on the 11th brought her back to the pack. She bounced back to finish the final seven holes at +2 to sit third among Valley golfers on the leaderboard.

Alana Gilbert (+5) was consistent throughout her opening round on the course finishing with 14 pars on her way to sitting tied for 19th in the standings. Gilbert rebounded from an early double-body to card six consecutive pars at one point to highlight her opening round.

Keira Brazeau (+6) was one stroke back of Gilbert on her way to sitting tied for 25th overall through the first 18 holes. Brazeau birdied both the 11th and the 17th holes on the back half of the round on her way to turning in a 77 in the first round of the day.

Sophia Florek (+7) also rebounded from an early rough stretch on the course after sitting +7 through her first four holes of the day. She birdied the 12th hole on her way to shooting +1 over the final 10 holes of her round with a second birdie on the 18th to sit tied for 31st.

Rosalie DiNunzio (+7) was among the leaders throughout a majority of the opening round after birdie-ing back-to-back holes on the 14th and 15th to sit at +2 after the first 12 holes, before struggling down the stretch to sit tied for 31st.

Gabby Cone (+8) birdied the fourth hole on her way to sitting tied for 34th through the first round of the day. She finished with 10 pars on the course, including a stretch where she recorded at least par in six of the final seven holes in her opening round.

KINGSTON, N.Y. – Behind a strong first-round performance on Monday (Sept. 28), the Purdue Fort Wayne women’s golf team is tied for first at the Hill YEAH! with 18 holes to play.

As a team, the Mastodons shot 301, which matched Merrimack for the best in the field.

Hunar Mittal led the Mastodons with an opening round of 73. After starting on hole nine, she was bogey-free on the back nine with birdies on holes 12 and 18 for a 2-under side. She bogeyed three and four, but parred her final four holes of the day to sit in third place after 18 holes.

Emily Gottman was one shot back of Mittal with a 74. She is in fourth place after bouncing back from a triple-bogey on her second hole followed by three bogeys. Over the following 13 holes, she was 4-under thanks to birdies on holes 14, 16, 18, six and seven. She only had one bogey on hole four.

Louise Ekesall shot 76 for 11th place. She was even on the back nine thanks to birdies on holes 14 and 18 and pars on five others.

Lillie Cone shot 78 and is in 16th place. She shot a 38 on the back nine, which was highlighted by a birdie on hole 12, her starting hole. She had three birdies on the front on holes two, six and seven.

Lillian Gottman rounded out those competing for the team score, turning in an 81 for 35th place. Her day was highlighted by a birdie on hole 12 and a four-hole stretch of pars on 15-18.

Amaya Wade played as an individual, shooting 87 and is in 48th place. She had a birdie on hole 18.

The final round of Stonehill’s Hill YEAH! will begin on Tuesday (Sept. 29).

PURDUE FT. WAYNE VOLLEYBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – Purdue Fort Wayne middle blocker Mya Plemons was selected as one of the Horizon League’s Players of the Week on Monday (Sept. 28), the league announced.

Plemons led Purdue Fort Wayne women’s volleyball to a 2-0 week to open Horizon League play with a pair of wins over Cleveland State. She had 20 blocks over two matches, averaging 2.22 blocks per set, 0.65 higher than anyone else in the league in HL play. The junior middle had 13 blocks in Saturday’s match, which was the second-most in a four-set match in all of Division I this season. She helped hold the Vikings to a .138 hitting percentage for the weekend, including .073 in the second matchup.

Plemons added 1.00 kills per set with a .286 hitting percentage in the front row.

This is Plemons’ first Player of the Week award in his career. She is the second Mastodon to pick up the honor, as Riley Rosneck earned the award after the first week of the season.

Plemons and the Mastodons are back in action on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 2-3) with a pair of matches at Robert Morris.

EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S GOLF

FLORENCE, Ind. – Freshman Mia McGraw was the top performer for the University of Evansville women’s golf team in the opening day of the NKU Fall Invitational at Belterra Golf Club. Just under two rounds were complete before play was called due to darkness.

McGraw completed the opening round with an 11-over 82. She is 44th on the leaderboard. Three behind her was the duo of Trinity Dubbs and Jane Grankina. Both finished the first 18 holes with rounds of 85, three over par.

Adeline Wittmer carded a 92 to open the tournament while Frankie Leigh Nicholes had a 104. The Purple Aces were in 11th place following the first round.

Most teams played 14 holes of the second round before the day was called. The final portion of round two along with the final 18 holes is set for Tuesday.

SOUTHERN INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball had two players named to the Ohio Valley Conference Players of the Week. Senior Ashby Willis earned Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore Aysa Thomas is Setter of the Week.

The pair helped lead the Screaming Eagles to a split series (1-1) on the road in the opening weekend of conference play at defending league champions, Eastern Illinois.  After dropping the first match Friday evening in four sets, USI bounced back Saturday, winning a five-set thriller.

Outside hitter Willis tallied 39 kills for 4.33/set in the series, hitting a .276 efficiency. She also led the team with 28 digs (3.11/set) and tallied seven blocks across the two matches. With her kill and dig numbers, Willis marked a double-double in both matches at EIU.

In game one against the Panthers, Willis tallied 15 kills and 14 digs. She maintained her highest hitting percentage in five games, at .273, making just three errors. In the second match, the senior set a season-high with 24 kills, hitting a .279 efficiency. She also led the team defensively, picking up 14 digs and matched her season-high with four blocks.

Willis continues to lead the OVC in total kills for the season (221), kills per set (3.95), and points scored (254). She also ranks third in total digs (177) and second in total service aces (21).

Setter Thomas tallied 97 assists for 10.78 per set in the opening weekend of conference play. The sophomore also recorded 24 digs (2.67/set), 12 kills, seven blocks, and three aces.

In the first match, Thomas dished out 43 assists for 10.75 per set, and matched her career-high, sneaking in seven kills. In the weekend’s win, Thomas dished out a season-high 54 assists (10.8/set) and marked a double-double with 15 digs to lead the team. She recorded another five kills and five blocks in the match. For the series, Thomas led her offense to a team hitting percentage of .252.

Thomas leads the conference in total assists, 531, and ranks second with 9.48 per set. Her 49 kills so far this season rank the most for a setter in the league.

This week’s awards mark the third weekly honor for each of the Screaming Eagles. USI holds an overall record of 6-8 so far this season, and 1-1 in OVC play as they sit in fourth place in league standings.

The Screaming Eagles move into their bye week and prepare for their next match where they host Morehead State University next weekend, October 9 &10, inside Liberty Arena.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF

Redshirt junior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) turned in the team’s top score of the day as the Valparaiso University men’s golf team played the second round of the three-day, 54-hole Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin at the par-72, 7286-yard University Ridge course on Monday.

How It Happened

Somerville replicated his Round-1 performance with a 3-over 75 on Monday. After teeing off from Hole 10, he played the back nine at -1 including birdies on 15 and 17. He is tied for 67th of 100 at 150 through two rounds.

Valpo’s best tournament score through 36 holes belongs to freshman Tyler Samaan (Elgin, Ill. / Burlington), who carded a 78 (+6) on Monday to bring his two-round total to 147 (t-46).

Junior Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township) was second on the team, both in Monday’s round and for the tournament. He carded a 76 (+4) to bring his two-day total to 149 (t-64). Politza was even par through his first 16 holes on Monday before playing the final two holes at four over.

The Beacons are 18th on the team leaderboard at 606, owning a five-stroke lead over Oakland. Southern Miss (564) sits atop both the team and individual (Jake Moffitt, -9) leaderboards.

“We started the second round on the 10th Hole, which is one of the tough stretches on the course.  We discussed that as a team, but we still had a very poor start, playing the first five holes at +10.  We were only able to put together six birdies for the entire round, and when you match that with three double bogeys, two triple bogeys and a nine on a Par 4, that’s a recipe for a very poor team score.”

“We have had some solid team scores during our past five rounds/two tournaments. Today’s rounds were a combination of poor shot execution and not working through the mental toughness required when the rounds aren’t going well. We need to be sharper mentally and stick to our process, especially when we have a slow start. We have a resilient group of players, and I’m confident that we can bounce back and finish the tournament with a solid round.”

VALPO WOMEN’S GOLF

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team played the first round and the majority of the second round of the NKU Fall Invitational on Monday, competing in an event hosted by Northern Kentucky at the par-71, 5988-yard Belterra Golf Club in Florence, Ind. The start of the first round was delayed due to dense fog. The players were slated to golf 36 holes on Monday, but eventually darkness halted the action with the second round still in progress.

How It Happened

Freshman Olivia Bailey (Rochester, Ind. / Rochester) led the team with a 75 (+4) in Round 1, one of three Beacons in the 70s for the opening round. She is tied for 24th in a 63-player field at +12 for the tournament with two holes remaining in Round 2.

Senior Keira Cotter (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Guelph [Lake Superior State]) has assembled a strong second round as she sits at +4 for the round through 16 holes. For the tournament, she’s at +18, second on the team and tied for 45th overall.

Sophomores Nora Meek (Beavercreek, Ohio / Beavercreek) and Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) both finished the first round in the 70s at 77 and 78, respectively.

As a team, Valpo is at +66 for the tournament, owning a 46-stroke lead over Evansville for 10th in the field. Valpo’s first-round score of 311 (+27) is the best team round in terms of overall score on the young season.

Butler leads the tournament at +17 and has the individual leader in Addi Kooi at -3.

UINDY WOMEN’S GOLF

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 25-ranked UIndy women’s golf took the course for the second time this young season, competing at the 54-hole Gilda’s Club Lakers Fall Invite Saturday though Monday. Competing at The Meadows at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich., the Greyhounds placed eighth in talented 16-team field, led by a top-15 finish by sophomore Lucile Ceolin.

Ceolin carded scores of 77-77-79, settling at +17 for the week to share 15th place among the 93 participants.

Freshman Addi Bright (+21) followed, carding a final-round 77 to move into a tie for 31st. Senior Caroline Whallon (+23) placed 39th, junior Abby Stone  (+30) was T-57, while freshman Josie Butler (+42) finished 79th.

IUNDY VOLLEYBALL

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Indianapolis is spending its third straight week in the AVCA Teraflex Division II top 25 it was announced Monday.  

Despite dropping Friday night’s conference matchup, the Hounds remain in the rankings claiming the 24th spot in the week five poll. Indianapolis currently holds a 13-2 overall record with a 3-1 GLVC record after defeating Upper Iowa 3-1 on Saturday. 

The Hounds lead the conference in assists per set (13.43), hitting percentage (.283), kills per set (14.30), win-loss percentage (.867), opponent hitting percentage (.136), team assists (712) and team kills (758). 

Junior Maddie Lynch ranks second in the league in kills per set (3.92) and third in the conference in total kills, 188 through the Hounds’ 15 contests, while maintaining a .335 hitting percentage.  Defensive specialist Macy Bruton sits third in the GLVC in digs per set, scooping up an average of 5.22 while collecting a total of 266 this season, placing her fourth in the conference. 

Ferris State extends its streak atop the national poll to four weeks with a perfect 14-0 record, while Grand Valley also represents the Midwest Region, spending a second straight week at 16.

The Hounds will travel to Cedarville for a midweek matchup on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, before returning to the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center for their Dig Pink Match Friday night against Maryville.

MARIAN MEN’S GOLF

Jackson, Mich. —- Marian University sophomore Drew Werkley was named the Crossroads League Men’s Golfer of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon.

Werkley posted a T8 finish in a loaded field at the Northwest Iowa National Invite last week to lead the Knights to a fifth-place finish as a team.

The Noblesville native carded back-to-back rounds of 67 on Monday, totaling 11 birdies across the 36 holes. He added four more birdies on Tuesday.

Marian Men’s Golf is off this week before returning to action at the Taylor Trojan Invitational, played at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
