NFL ROUNDUP: MARCUS MARIOTA, COMMANDERS STUN SEAHAWKS
Marcus Mariota threw three touchdown passes, Kain Medrano returned an interception 50 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter and the Washington Commanders held on to shock the defending champion Seattle Seahawks 33-31 Sunday in Landover, Md.
Starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels (elbow), Mariota was 19-of-31 passing for 183 yards and no interceptions. Terry McLaurin had six catches for 77 yards and a score for the Commanders (1-2) in their home opener.
Sam Darnold, injured in the first quarter of Seattle’s opener, completed 31 of 45 passes for 379 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in his return. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 10 catches for 128 yards and two scores. The Seahawks (2-1) had won 12 straight games, including playoffs, beginning with Week 12 of last season.
Medrano picked off Darnold’s check-down pass over the middle and scored to make it 33-24 with 3:57 remaining. The extra point attempt failed after a sideline celebration penalty. Darnold completed five straight passes, the last a 7-yard TD to Cooper Kupp with 2:51 remaining, and it was 33-31. But Washington’s Rachaad White ran for 19 yards on third down and Mariota ran for another first down to ice it.
Lions 31, Jets 24
Jahmyr Gibbs scored three touchdowns and totaled 164 yards, and host Detroit made a stop to end a shootout in the final minute and defeat New York.
Gibbs caught a Jared Goff swing pass in the right flat and jogged in from 11 yards out to take the lead with 2:25 remaining. He finished with 20 carries for 99 yards and two rushing touchdowns while catching seven passes for 65 yards.
The Jets drove inside the 30 of the Lions before Garrett Wilson, who had 10 receptions for 107 yards and a fourth-quarter TD, was hit and required an injury timeout with 51 seconds. On the next play, Geno Smith (31 for 37, 321 yards, three TDs) was sacked by Chuck Clark on a jailbreak blitz up the middle and fumbled. Jack Campbell scooped up the ball for the Lions to end the game.
Bills 24, Chargers 16
Josh Allen ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, as Buffalo rallied for a victory over Los Angeles at Orchard Park, N.Y.
Allen was 16-of-26 passing for 204 yards while overcoming two first-half interceptions. He has scored two rushing touchdowns in each of his three games this season. James Cook III added 154 rushing yards and a touchdown as Buffalo (3-0), despite five turnovers, won its second game in as many weeks at its new $2 billion stadium.
Justin Herbert was 20-of-34 passing for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Chargers (0-3). Omarion Hampton rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries, and Genesis Smith had two interceptions for Los Angeles, which led 10-0 after the first quarter.
Colts 19, Texans 17
Spencer Shrader kicked four field goals, including a 53-yarder with 16 seconds remaining, to lead Indianapolis over visiting Houston.
Shrader matched his career best of 58 yards to help the Colts (1-2) snap a five-game losing streak against their AFC South rival. Daniel Jones was 24-of-36 passing for 235 yards, one touchdown, one interception and two lost fumbles for the Colts, who also halted a nine-game overall skid dating back to last season.
Will Anderson Jr. recorded 2.5 sacks, forced one fumble and recovered another for the Texans (0-3), who didn’t commit a turnover while forcing three Indianapolis miscues. C.J. Stroud completed 16 of 27 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown.
Jaguars 35, Patriots 6
Trevor Lawrence threw three touchdown passes, leading Jacksonville to a statement victory over visiting New England.
Lawrence connected with Josh Cameron, Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington for scores, completing 19 of 29 passes for 182 yards with an interception. Meyers had seven catches for 64 yards, while Bhayshul Tuten rushed for 73 yards and a score for the Jaguars (2-1), who won their sixth straight regular-season home game.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye paired two interceptions with one lost fumble to give him seven turnovers in three games. Maye was 14-of-25 passing for 199 yards, while Mack Hollins caught six passes for 87 yards for the Patriots (1-2).
Steelers 30, Bengals 27
Chris Boswell booted the go-ahead field goal and Derrick Harmon strip-sacked Joe Burrow in the final minute to lift host Pittsburgh to a win over Cincinnati.
Pittsburgh (2-1) took a 30-27 lead with 2:15 left when Boswell connected from 33 yards, six and a half minutes after he tied the game with a 36-yard kick. Aaron Rodgers was 19-of-34 passing for 292 yards, three touchdowns and one interception to lead the Steelers.
Burrow, who completed his first 14 passes for 96 yards, finished 28-of-37 for 282 yards and three touchdowns for Cincinnati (2-1). Ja’Marr Chase grabbed nine receptions for 98 yards and a first-quarter score, while Tee Higgins added six for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Chiefs 24, Dolphins 10
Kenneth Walker III had a rushing and receiving touchdown and Patrick Mahomes threw for 246 yards and two scores with one interception as Kansas City topped Miami in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Walker gained 70 yards on 18 carries and Rashee Rice topped the Chiefs with seven catches for 88 yards. The Chiefs sealed the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Travis Kelce with 2:55 to go.
Malik Willis finished 20 for 36 for 210 yards while leading the Dolphins with 56 yards rushing on nine carries. Miami lost running back De’Von Achane with a knee injury during the team’s first series. He gained 17 yards on three carries.
Browns 21, Panthers 18
Deshaun Watson returned after a brief time on the sideline to help rescue Cleveland with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Harold Fannin Jr. with 1:48 remaining in a home-opener victory against Carolina.
After the go-ahead TD toss, Watson threw to Denzel Boston for a two-point conversion. The Panthers failed to pick up a first down on the ensuing possession, but the Browns were stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Carolina 15 with 1:01 left. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was intercepted by Ronnie Hickman to seal the outcome.
Fannin caught seven passes for 51 yards and both of Watson’s touchdown throws. Watson was 16-for-30 passing for 144 yards for the Browns (2-1). Young went 26-for-48 for 290 yards with one touchdown. Ryan Fitzgerald kicked four field goals for the Panthers (1-2).
Giants 12, Titans 7
Dominic Zvada kicked four field goals and New York’s defense held Tennessee to one first down in the first half of a low-scoring win in East Rutherford, N.J.
Zvada hit from 39, 27, 39 and 30 yards on a rainy, windy afternoon at MetLife Stadium. New York’s defense did the rest, forcing Tennessee to punt five consecutive times in the first half and keeping the Titans out of the end zone until 5:35 remained in the fourth quarter.
Cam Ward found Wan’Dale Robinson for a 4-yard touchdown strike that gave the Titans (0-3) a chance. They forced a punt and got the ball back at their 23 with 3:03 remaining, eventually reaching the Giants’ 7 on Ward’s 11-yard completion to Elic Ayomanor with 24 seconds left. But Jevon Holland preserved the win for the Giants by intercepting Ward with 17 seconds on the clock.
Broncos 30, Rams 26
Bo Nix lunged over the top for a touchdown with 47 seconds left and also threw two scoring passes as Denver overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to record a dramatic victory over visiting Los Angeles.
Talanoa Hufanga returned an interception 66 yards for a touchdown and nabbed a second pick in the end zone to close the game for Denver (2-1), which won its second straight contest. Nix was 17-of-34 passing for 186 yards, one interception and touchdown throws to Pat Bryant and Nate Adkins.
Matthew Stafford completed 30 of 55 passes for 390 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Rams (1-2), who saw an eight-game winning streak against AFC teams come to an end. Davante Adams caught seven passes for 137 yards, Konata Mumpfield had four receptions for 93 yards and a score and Tyler Higbee had eight catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Vikings 23, Buccaneers 16
Myles Price had an 86-yard punt return for a touchdown, and Minnesota held on to beat host Tampa Bay, which lost quarterback Baker Mayfield late in the game to what head coach Todd Bowles said is a dislocated right thumb.
Kyler Murray completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Vikings (3-0). Jordan Addison had five receptions for 90 receiving yards and a score. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson injured his left ankle during the second quarter and did not return.
Mayfield completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Buccaneers (0-3). Minnesota linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted Mayfield on on fourth-and-13 with 1:39 remaining. Mayfield was hit on the play by Blake Cashman. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels was in for Tampa Bay’s last possession and didn’t complete any of his three throws, including an interception by Isaiah Rodgers on the final-play “Hail Mary” throw.
49ers 36, Cardinals 30
Brock Purdy threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns as San Francisco built a 17-point third-quarter lead before holding off a rally by Arizona for a win in Santa Clara, Calif.
Purdy completed 15 of 27 passes, including 10- and 20-yard touchdown strikes to George Kittle in the fourth quarter that kept the Cardinals at bay. Christian McCaffrey added 75 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the 49ers (3-0), who outgained Arizona 437-365 despite owning possession for just 21:16.
Jacoby Brissett hit 38 of 52 attempts for 280 yards and two scores for the Cardinals (1-2), who dropped their second straight game after a season-opening win at the Los Angeles Chargers. Arizona got 90 yards on 21 carries from rookie Jeremiyah Love but hurt itself with mistakes.
Raiders 35, Saints 27
Kirk Cousins passed for 248 yards and three touchdowns and Las Vegas stayed unbeaten by charging past host New Orleans.
Tight end Brock Bowers had a standout season debut, returning from a knee injury to catch 10 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown for the surprising Raiders (3-0), who trailed by 11 at one point in the second half.
Tyler Shough passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns but had two costly second-half turnovers for the Saints (1-2). Chris Olave hauled in nine passes for 107 yards, and Juwan Johnson and Noah Fant caught two touchdowns apiece.
Ravens 34, Cowboys 31
Tyler Loop kicked a 56-yard field goal as time expired and Baltimore shocked Dallas on the final play in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Ravens (2-1) stopped the Cowboys (1-2) from scoring a touchdown on the previous drive and, after yielding a short field goal, got the ball back with 7 seconds on the clock. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson fired a laser to Zay Flowers for a 27-yard gain and the receiver went down at the 39 to set up Loop’s game-winner.
Jackson completed 15 of 20 passes for 186 yards and two TDs. He also had 50 rushing yards. Derrick Henry ran for 89 yards and scored twice, and Flowers caught five passes for 84 yards. For Dallas, Dak Prescott completed 25 of 40 for 276 yards and one TD. Javonte Williams had 19 carries for 98 yards and a TD.

SEVEN FROM SUNDAY – WEEK 3
A look at seven statistical highlights from games played during the 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. ET windows on Sunday, September 27, the third week of the 2026 season.
With two games remaining in Week 3, 12 of 14 games (86 percent) have been within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter while 11 of 14 games (79 percent) have been decided by eight points or less.
Five teams – Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh – recorded a game-winning score in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter while three teams – Baltimore, Buffalo and Las Vegas – overcame deficits of 10-or-more points to win.
Five teams – Buffalo, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Minnesota and San Francisco – advanced to 3-0 while three teams – Atlanta, Indianapolis and Washington – earned their first wins of the season. The Commanders defeated the Seahawks, 33-31, and are the first 0-2 team to defeat the defending Super Bowl champions in Week 3 since 1980 (Cincinnati over Pittsburgh).
The Ravens defeated the Cowboys, 34-31, as kicker Tyler Loop converted a 56-yard game-winning field goal as time expired in the first-ever regular-season game in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Baltimore running back Derrick Henry, who had two rushing touchdowns in the win and has 135 career rushing touchdowns (including the postseason), surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (134) for the third-most rushing touchdowns, including the playoffs, in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (183 rushing touchdowns) and LaDainian Tomlinson (151) have more.
Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers passed for 292 yards and three touchdowns for a 101.6 rating in the Steelers’ 30-27 win over Cincinnati.
Rodgers has 165 career regular-season victories, tied with Ben Roethlisberger (165 wins) for the fifth-most regular season wins in NFL history. Only Tom Brady (251 wins) as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (186), Peyton Manning (186) and Drew Brees (172) have more.
Rodgers has 81 career games with at least three touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Brees (80 games) for the second-most such games in NFL history. Only Tom Brady (91 games) has more.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, in his 150th career start (including the postseason), passed for 246 yards and two touchdowns with a 119.8 rating while running back Kenneth Walker had two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in the Chiefs’ 24-10 win at Miami.
Mahomes recorded his 115th career win, tying Tom Brady (115 wins) for the most wins by a quarterback in his first 150 career starts, including the postseason, in NFL history.
Mahomes has 97 career games with multiple touchdown passes, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (96 games) for the second-most such games, including the postseason, in their first 10 seasons in NFL history. Only Russell Wilson (100 games) has more.
Walker is the first player in NFL history with a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in two of his first three games with a team.
Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen recorded two rushing touchdowns and linebacker Greg Rousseau recorded two sacks in the Bills’ 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Allen is the first quarterback in NFL history with multiple rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games.
Allen, who has six rushing touchdowns this season, is the fourth player ever with at least six rushing touchdowns in nine consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk (10 from 1994-2003), LaDainian Tomlinson (10 from 2001-10) and Jim Brown (nine from 1957-65).
Rousseau is the third player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, with two-or-more sacks in each of his team’s first three games of a season, joining Mark Gastineau (1984 with the New York Jets) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene (1998 with Carolina).
Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs recorded 164 scrimmage yards (99 rushing, 65 receiving) and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) while wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had his fifth touchdown reception of the season in the Lions’ 31-24 win over the New York Jets.
Gibbs and St. Brown tied Buffalo’s Pro Football Hall of Famers Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed (23 games) for the fourth-most games in which both running back-wide receiver teammates score a touchdown in NFL history. Only Dallas’ Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin (32 games), the Baltimore Colts’ Pro Football Hall of Fame duo of Lenny Moore and Raymond Berry (31) and Indianapolis’ Pro Football Hall of Famers Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison (25) have more.
Gibbs is the first player with four games with multiple rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception in his first four seasons in NFL history.
Gibbs has 463 scrimmage yards (307 rushing, 156 receiving) and six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving) this season and is the first player in NFL history with at least 300 rushing yards, four rushing TDs, 150 receiving yards and multiple touchdown receptions in his first three games of a season.
Gibbs has 13 career games with at least two rushing touchdowns, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown (13 games), Todd Gurley (13) and Clinton Portis (13) for the most such games by a player under the age of 25 in NFL history.
Gibbs is the fourth player in NFL history with at least 150 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns in four games in his first four career seasons, joining Cloyce Box, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Larry Johnson.
Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow recorded three touchdown passes, including one to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, in Week 3 at Pittsburgh.
Burrow has 30 career games with at least three touchdown passes, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre (30 games) and Dak Prescott (30) for the fourth-most such games by a player in his first seven seasons in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino (42) and Peyton Manning (32) as well as Patrick Mahomes (38) have more.
Chase, who has 7,022 receiving yards in 81 career games, surpassed Torry Holt (82 games) as the fourth-fastest player to reach 7,000 career receiving yards in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (72 games), Julio Jones (72) and Justin Jefferson (73) reached the mark faster.
Chase has 57 career touchdown receptions, surpassing Dez Bryant (56 touchdown receptions) for the fourth-most touchdown receptions by a player under the age of 27 in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Randy Moss (77 touchdown receptions) and Larry Fitzgerald (59) as well as Rob Gronkowski (65) have more.
Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 10 receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Week 3 at Washington.
Smith-Njigba is the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with six touchdown receptions in his first three games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Calvin Johnson (2011 with Detroit) and Marvin Harrison (1999 with Indianapolis) as well as Daryl Turner (1985 with Seattle).
Smith-Njigba is the second player in NFL history with at least 25 receptions, 400 receiving yards and six touchdown receptions in his first three games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison (1999 with Indianapolis).
Smith-Njigba is the second player all-time with at least 120 receiving yards and a touchdown reception in each of his team’s first three games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (1989 with San Francisco).

NFL INJURY ROUNDUP: BAKER MAYFIELD, BREECE HALL KNOCKED OUT LATE IN LOSSES
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield sustained a dislocated right thumb late in Sunday’s 23-16 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles announced the extent of the injury after the contest and said Mayfield will undergo an MRI exam on Monday. Bowles said X-rays didn’t show a fracture.
Mayfield, who recently received a three-year, $165 million extension, was injured on a fourth-and-13 play in which he was intercepted by Minnesota’s Andrew Van Ginkel with 1:39 left in the contest.
Mayfield was hit in the thumb by rushing Blake Cashman and went down in obvious pain, grabbed his bloody thumb and was heard yelling. After later walking off the field, he slammed his helmet to the ground while walking from the bench area to the locker room.
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is Tampa Bay’s only other quarterback on the 53-man roster. He went 0-for-3 with an interception in his limited action at the end of the loss.
Bowles indicated Daniels would be in line to start next Sunday against the visiting Green Bay Packers.
–In the same game, Vikings star receiver Justin Jefferson sustained a left ankle injury during the first quarter and did not return.
The two-time first-team All-Pro appeared to hurt the ankle on a 10-yard reception at the tail end of Minnesota’s first possession. He was able to leave the field on his own and spent some of the second quarter on the Vikings’ sideline, wearing his helmet, before retreating to the locker room.
Coach Kevin O’Connell said Jefferson “got close a couple times” to returning before he was ruled out. He will be evaluated further Monday.
Also for the Vikings, tight end Josh Oliver (bicep) and cornerback Charles Demmings (hamstring) were knocked out of the game and will be evaluated further, per O’Connell.
–New York Jets running back Breece Hall is likely headed for an MRI Monday after he sustained a thigh injury during the fourth quarter of a 31-24 loss at the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
“I felt something when I was running and then got tackled and planted and then felt something else,” Hall told reporters postgame.
The Jets had a further scare when No. 1 receiver Garrett Wilson needed medical attention following a hit with 51 seconds left. But coach Aaron Glenn said postgame that Wilson was evaluated for a concussion, cleared the protocol and will “be just fine.”
New York’s two best skill players, Hall ran for a career-high 1,065 yards last season, and Wilson began his NFL career with three 1,000-yard campaigns before injuries limited him to seven appearances in 2025.
–Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane missed the final three-plus quarters of Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with a knee injury.
“To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment, but I can’t give you any other details until I have them,” Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said afterward.
Achane was hurt on a non-contact run in the first quarter. Achane, 24, set career highs with 1,350 rushing yards and 1,838 yards from scrimmage last season for the Dolphins.
–San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans sustained a rib strain in the team’s 36-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals, NFL Network reported.
The six-time Pro Bowler sustained a hip injury last week but was able to play in Week 3. He was slow to get up after Budda Baker hit him on an incomplete pass during the second quarter. He entered the medical tent and headed to the locker room on a cart a few minutes later.
“We don’t know yet,” coach Kyle Shanahan said postgame when asked about Evans. “We couldn’t tell if it was a broken rib. We couldn’t tell if it was an oblique. Something we’ll find out probably more tomorrow.”
The 49ers (3-0) also lost left tackle Trent Williams (stinger) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quad) in the second half. Evans had three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown before departing.
–Washington Commanders linebacker Leo Chenal was taken off on the cart in the second quarter with a neck injury.
After Washington’s 33-31 upset win over the visiting Seattle Seahawks, Commanders coach Dan Quinn told the press that Chenal was undergoing tests at a local hospital and had feeling in his extremities.
–Christian Benford, the Bills’ No. 1 cornerback, came up limping with a non-contact toe injury during Buffalo’s 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Reports said Benford was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot after the game. Benford totaled seven interceptions over the first four seasons of his career and had three tackles with one pass breakup on Sunday before his exit.
–New York Giants edge rusher Brian Burns needed assistance to leave the field after going down with a knee injury in the fourth quarter of their 12-7 home win over the Tennessee Titans.
“Brian Burns will get an MRI hopefully tonight. We’re trying to get that scheduled for tonight,” Giants coach John Harbaugh said postgame. “There is some hope there, but we won’t know until we see the MRI.”
Burns, a three-time Pro Bowler who was a second-team All-Pro last season, entered the Week 3 contest questionable with a left ankle sprain.
–The Cincinnati Bengals lost rookie receiver Colbie Young to a right knee injury on the first offensive play of the game when Jaquan Brisker brought him to the ground.
Bengals safety Bryan Cook injured his right ankle on Cincinnati’s second defensive series and came out before halftime of the 30-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
–Raiders wide receiver Jack Bech broke his forearm during Las Vegas’ 35-27 win over the New Orleans Saints and is “headed for IR,” NFL Network reported.
Bech is in his second NFL season and caught his first career touchdown in the Raiders’ Week 1 win over Miami.
–The Saints lost a pair of starters during that game, running back Travis Etienne and linebacker Pete Werner.
Etienne had 57 yards on 13 carries and two receptions for 13 yards before aggravating a previous hamstring injury he was playing through. Werner left the game with a stinger and didn’t return.
–In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Baltimore Ravens lost a pair of centers in starter Jovaughn Gwyn (ankle) and Ethan Pocic (knee). Both had to be carted off before the Ravens defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-31 on a last-second field goal.
For Dallas, safety Jalen Thompson (hamstring) left the game in the first half, fellow safety Markquese Bell went to the locker room in the third quarter to be treated for dehydration and cornerback Shavon Revel (right knee) was helped off the field between the third and fourth quarters.
–Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Donte Jackson sustained a concussion in the first half of the loss to the Bills. He started for the second time in three games and recorded one pass defensed.
–Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson (shoulder) was ruled out shortly after halftime in the 30-26 loss to the host Denver Broncos. In his first season with the Rams after four with the Kansas City Chiefs, Watson made his third start and posted two tackles and two passes defensed.

FLORIDA RIDES WIN OVER REBELS TO NO. 8 RANKING IN AP TOP 25; TEXAS, GEORGIA, NOTRE DAME TOP 3 AGAIN
Florida made a massive jump in The Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday and landed in the top 10 for the first time in five years while four new teams joined the rankings in a major shuffle.
The Gators’ 24-point win over then-No. 4 Mississippi under first-year coach Jon Sumrall on Saturday earned them a 13-rung promotion to No. 8, their highest ranking since 2020 and first top-10 appearance since 2021.
Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame continued to hold the top three spots, Miami was a season-high No. 4 and Ohio State moved up two spots to No. 5. Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and BYU completed the top 10.
The Longhorns received 62 first-place votes from the media voting panel, four more than last week, after they held off Tennessee 20-17 in their first road game.
Georgia, coming off a convincing win over Oklahoma and outscoring opponents by an average of 41.5 points per game, got six first-place votes, double its number last week. Miami and Indiana each received one first-place vote.
Mississippi State moved up eight spots to No. 16, its highest ranking in four years, for beating Missouri at home. Oregon was up five spots to No. 15 after winning on the road against Southern California. Houston also moved up five spots to No. 20 after winning at Georgia Southern.
Iowa earned its highest ranking since 2021, at No. 14, for knocking off Michigan on the road on the final play of the game.
Seven ranked teams lost in Week 4 and four dropped out of the poll. Penn State took the biggest fall, going from No. 13 to unranked after losing to Wisconsin at home.

USC SUSPENDS LB DESMAN STEPHENS FOR 1 GAME FOR HIS DANGEROUS HIT ON OREGON QB DANTE MOORE
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game Sunday for his dangerous late hit on Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and his celebration afterward.
Stephens apologized and expressed empathy for Moore and his family in a statement issued by the Trojans. Coach Lincoln Riley called Stephens’ actions “unacceptable” while announcing the suspension for his starting linebacker, who won’t play when No. 18 USC hosts Washington next weekend.
Stephens, a junior from Clarkston, Michigan, was ejected for targeting after he dived in to hit Moore while the quarterback slid to the turf in the red zone during the second quarter of Oregon’s 41-27 victory Saturday night at the Coliseum.
Moore’s head snapped back and hit the turf hard, and he was motionless on the grass while the Ducks confronted the celebrating Stephens in a melee on the field. Moore eventually left the field on a stretcher and in an ambulance with a neck brace.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game,” Stephens said. “Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable. Regardless of what was going through my mind at the time, there is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention. I take full responsibility for my actions. That is not the person or teammate I want to be, and I will learn from this.

LSU senior linebacker Whit Weeks has suffered a fracture in right leg, according to multiple sources.
Weeks exited in the third quarter of Saturday’s 35-6 win over Texas A&M.
It is not the first significant injury for the 21-year-old. Last season, he missed five games due to a leg injury.
In 2024, he was a first-team All-SEC selection, racking up 125 combined tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception.
This season, Weeks has posted 24 combined tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss across four games.

Rookie Lucas Spence ripped a two-run triple to highlight a four-run third inning, helping the Houston Astros celebrate the American League West title with a 9-0 victory over the Athletics on Sunday in West Sacramento, Calif.
Christian Walker homered to lead off the sixth inning and joined Yainer Diaz, Cam Smith and Jeremy Pena in collecting two hits and an RBI for the Astros (81-81), who won the division for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
Third-seeded Houston will host the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three wild-card series. The Astros went 5-2 against the White Sox this season.
Houston actually captured the AL West title prior to the conclusion of its victory, as the Texas Rangers dropped a 6-4 decision to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Zack Wheeler pitched six strong innings and Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs as the Phillies clinched their fifth straight postseason berth by beating the Rays.
Bryce Harper and Edmundo Sosa homered for Philadelphia, which had lost its previous four games by the combined score of 23-3. The Phillies finally showed signs of life in Game 162, and now they’ll head to Atlanta to face the Braves in the National League wild-card round that begins on Tuesday,
Johnny DeLuca homered twice for Tampa Bay. The Rays earned a bye into the American League Division Series and face the winner of the wild-card series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Alex Bregman went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs against his former team to help Chicago wrap up the regular season by defeating Boston in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The game was scheduled to be played in Boston, but was moved to Tropicana Field because of the nor’easter that hit much of New England throughout the weekend.
Both of Bregman’s home runs came against Boston starter Tanner Houck, who made his first appearance on the mound since May 2025. Houck (0-1), who had Tommy John surgery last year, allowed three runs on four hits in three innings. The Red Sox were held to five hits and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Josh Bell hit a two-run home run and drove in three to lead host Minnesota to a season-ending win over Texas.
The loss eliminated the Rangers from the American League West title race and the playoffs. Rangers starter Mackenzie Gore allowed one hit and one run in 2 1/3 innings.
Twins starter Dean Kremer (5-5) gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. Kremer yielded a home run to Danny Jansen, but did not allow another Texas runner past first base.
Dodgers 5, Giants 1 (10 innings)
Andy Pages capped a four-run 10th inning with a three-run home run, and visiting Los Angeles beat San Francisco to earn its 100th win of the season.
The Dodgers took the lead in the 10th when Alex Call’s two-out double off the left field fence drove in automatic runner Miguel Rojas. The Giants then elected to walk Max Muncy, before Pages foiled that strategy by driving a pitch by Duncan Davitt (0-1) into the left field bleachers for his 23rd home run of the season.
Alex Vesia (3-1), whose perfect ninth sent the game into the 10th, was credited with the win, which allows the Dodgers to take a three-game winning streak into their National League Division Series opener next Saturday against the winner of the wild-card series between the host Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.

Heriberto Hernandez and Griffin Conine slugged solo home runs, giving host Miami a win over Atlanta to end its season on a high note.

Braves starter JR Ritchie (1-5) took the loss. He allowed seven hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Mauricio Dubon hit his 12th homer to open the scoring and added an RBI single for Atlanta, which begins its home wild-card series against divisional rival Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Andres Chaparro had three hits, including two solo home runs, and host Washington beat New York to end its season with a series win.
Will Dion (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory and Erik Tolman worked the ninth for his fifth save for Washington, which improved by 11 wins over 2025.
Francisco Lindor hit his 300th career homer and Ronny Mauricio smacked his third home run in two games for the Mets, who finished last in the National League East. Carson Benge ended his rookie season with three hits and an RBI.

In potentially his final career start, Max Scherzer struck out seven over seven-plus innings and host Toronto topped Cincinnati.
The 42-year-old Scherzer (4-9) allowed one run and six hits to earn his 225th career win and boost his strikeout total to 3,557. The Blue Jays’ 37-year-old designated hitter George Springer, who might have also played his last game, like Scherzer received a standing ovation when he was replaced.
Brandon Valenzuela hit a two-run home run for Toronto and Charles McAdoo added a solo shot in the rubber match of the three-game series. Brandon Williamson (5-5) allowed four runs and four hits in three innings for the Reds.
White Sox 4, Rockies 2
Randal Grichuk and Brenton Doyle smacked two-run home runs and Anthony Kay pitched five strong innings to boost host Chicago past Colorado.
The White Sox are set to visit the American League West champion Houston Astros on Tuesday in the opener of an AL wild-card series. Chicago clinched its first playoff berth on Thursday since 2021 but was eliminated from contention for an AL Central title with Saturday’s loss to Colorado and a Cleveland victory at Kansas City.
Cole Carrigg homered for Colorado, which finished with more than 100 losses for the fourth successive season.

Vinnie Pasquantino’s second solo homer of the day broke an eighth-inning tie and sent host Kansas City to a win over Cleveland.

Jared Jones pitched four innings of one-hit ball and Konnor Griffin led off the game with a solo home run and drove in two runs to lead Pittsburgh past host Detroit.
Griffin’s homer was the sixth of his rookie season and helped the Pirates secure their first winning record since 2018 and only their second since last making the postseason in 2015. Jones was not eligible for the win after exiting the game before the fifth. Jones finished 5-6 with a 3.72 ERA in 21 starts after returning from elbow surgery in late May.
Rookie River Ryan (0-1) made his second start for the Tigers and sixth of his career. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits over 1 1/3 innings. Detroit finished with a losing record after advancing to the American League Division Series each of the past two seasons.

Gavin Sheets homered and Freddy Fermin knocked in three runs as host San Diego tuned up for their National League wild-card series by stopping visiting Arizona.
San Diego, which opens its best-of-three series Tuesday night against the visiting Chicago Cubs, snapped a 4-4 tie with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Fermin capped it with a two-run single.
Michael Soroka pitched 4 2/3 innings for Arizona, which was eliminated from postseason contention when Philadelphia beat Tampa Bay around the same time San Diego’s Jake Cronenworth drew a bases-loaded walk to push home the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Misiorowski (16-5) allowed two singles in 5 1/3 innings and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.80. The right-hander struck out five, giving him 252 strikeouts for the year.
Cardinals starter Andre Pallante (12-9) allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings. He allowed six singles in the first inning for a 3-0 Brewers lead as well as Gary Sanchez’s home run in the third.
Mariners 7, Angels 4
Logan Gilbert pitched four-plus hitless innings and struck out eight as host Seattle dealt Los Angeles its 100th loss of the season. It was also the last game for Dan Wilson as the Mariners’ manager. The team announced after the game that Wilson will not return in that role in 2027 after a disappointing season and third-place finish in the American League West.
Jose Siri homered for the Angels, losers of 100 games for the first time. They had been the lone active MLB team to never suffer that many defeats.
Gilbert didn’t allow a baserunner until walking Moises Ballesteros leading off the fifth. He struck out the side in the first inning to reach 200 strikeouts for the season, becoming the fourth pitcher in franchise history to do so in multiple seasons.

MLB SETS WILD-CARD SERIES GAME TIMES
MLB announced the game times for all four of its 2026 wild-card series Sunday.
The full playoff field was not yet set, with the American League West champion and the National League’s final wild-card spot still to be determined in Game 162, but both matchups involving those teams were known based on the standings. Each series is best-of-three and will be played from Tuesday through Thursday (if necessary).
The East Coast prime-time spot went to the American League series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in New York. All three games between the league’s top two wild cards are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET, but Game 3 might move to 7 p.m. ET if other series end early.
Start times for the other series are equally consistent.
The other AL series has all three games scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. The West champion, which will be either the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros based on Sunday’s games, will host the Chicago White Sox, the AL’s third wild-card team. The series will be played in Arlington, Texas, or Houston.
In the National League, first pitch for each game in the series between the third wild card, either the Philadelphia Phillies or the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the East Division champion Atlanta Braves is set for 2 p.m. ET in Atlanta. The other series, a rematch of last year’s wild-card series between the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, has all three games set for 10 p.m. ET in San Diego.
All wild-card series games will air on NBC or NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) and stream on Peacock.

PLAYOFF ODDS: DODGERS FAVORED TO KEEP GRASP OF WORLD SERIES TROPHY OVER BREWERS, RAYS
Oddsmakers certainly like the Los Angeles Dodgers’ track record, as they are favored to capture a third consecutive World Series title as the MLB playoffs get started this week.
The Dodgers have better odds than the top-seeded Milwaukee Brewers, who set a franchise mark with 103 regular-season victories and had the best record in baseball. But the Brewers haven’t been to the World Series since 1982, when they were in the American League and lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Los Angeles, coming in as the National League West champion (100-62), is the favorite among the 12 playoff teams to keep its grip on the World Series trophy, according to DraftKings (+200), BetMGM (+210) and FanDuel (+230).
The Dodgers added to their core of playoff-proven stars in Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, among others, with left-hander Tarik Skubal. The two-time American League Cy Young Award winner was acquired from Detroit ahead of the trade deadline.
The three sports books agree that Milwaukee is the next most likely champion at +600 (DraftKings), +550 (BetMGM) and +500 (FanDuel). The Brewers have never won the World Series, but they do have rocket-armed Jacob Misiorowski, the NL Cy Young Award favorite who led the majors in ERA (1.80) and strikeouts (252).
There is some difference on the third slot, as the AL’s top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays (98-64) are the choice by DraftKings (+800) and FanDuel (+750), but the New York Yankees are listed by BetMGM with the Rays at +800.
The Yankees, with or without injured slugger Aaron Judge, first have to get past the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-three wild-card round played in New York starting Tuesday. The winner faces the resting Rays in the AL Division Series.
DraftKings has the Yankees fourth at +850 to win it all, while FanDuel places their odds at +800.
The AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians also have a break as they will await the survivor of the wild-card series between the Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox.
The Guardians are fifth per DraftKings and BetMGM (each at +1200) and FanDuel (+1000)
The Astros won the AL West with a .500 record (81-81) and the White Sox got passed by the Guardians in the Central to settle for the final wild-card berth.
The fact that the White Sox are a playoff team after 100-plus loss seasons in 2023, 2024 and 2025 is not lost on the oddsmakers. They have the longest odds of any team at +4000 (DraftKings, BetMGM) and +3500 (FanDuel).
The pennant chases follow suit, with the Dodgers favored in the NL (+115 by DraftKings, +130 by BetMGM), and the Rays having the best odds to represent the AL in the World Series (+270 by DraftKings, +260 by BetMGM).
The Dodgers next will face the winner of the wild-card series between the third-seeded Atlanta Braves and the sixth-seeded Philadelphia Phillies. The Brewers face the winner between the fourth-seeded San Diego Padres and the fifth-seeded Chicago Cubs in the other wild-card matchup.

A’JA WILSON WINS AP WNBA PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR; ANGEL REESE TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER
NEW YORK (AP) — A’ja Wilson is in a class by herself, winning the AP’s WNBA Player of the Year award for an unprecedented third straight year.
Wilson received 15 of the 17 first-place votes from a national media panel Sunday. She topped Olivia Miles of Minnesota as well as Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana, who all had stellar seasons.
“It’s big. It’s an honor for me to do it three times in a row. It’s not easy,” Wilson said in a phone interview. “My counterparts in this league are really good. I don’t take it lightly because of how much talent we do have in this league.”
It’s the fourth time that Wilson has won the AP award, breaking a tie with Breanna Stewart for most since the awards were first given in 2016.
“That’s got a nice ring to it,” Wilson said. “That’s pretty cool.”
The AP voting is done by a 17-member panel that votes on the power poll each week. It’s the 11th year of the awards.
The WNBA will announce its postseason awards over the course of the playoffs, which begin Sunday. Wilson is a huge favorite to win the WNBA MVP for the third straight season.
Wilson once again led the league in scoring (26.2) while shooting nearly 53% from the field. She also averaged 9.4 rebounds, a career-best 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks.
Angel Reese dethroned Wilson as the AP Defensive Player of the Year. Wilson had won the award in three of the last four seasons.
Reese made the most of her move to Atlanta this offseason. She was third in the league in steals and had the versatility to guard most positions defensively. She also topped the league in rebounds for the third consecutive season.
Miles had an incredible first season and was honored as the AP Rookie of the Year as a unanimous choice. The No. 2 pick in the draft by the Lynx averaged 19.8 points, 6.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds to help Minnesota finish with the best record in the league. She set the WNBA record for points by a rookie, surpassing Clark’s from 2024.
Miles was joined on the AP All-Rookie team by Dallas’ Azzi Fudd, Chicago’s Sydney Taylor, Seattle’s Flau’jae Johnson, New York’s Pauline Astier and Toronto’s Kiki Rice.
Wilson, Clark, Miles and Mitchell headlined the AP All-WNBA first team. They were joined by New York’s Stewart. Reese was on the second team along with teammate Rhyne Howard, Dallas’ Paige Bueckers, Las Vegas’ Jackie Young and Golden State’s Gabby Williams.
Other AP winners included:
— Coach of the Year: Cheryl Reeve. It’s the third time the Lynx coach has won the award, also being honored in 2020 and 2024. She guided the team to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs while it was missing superstar Napheesa Collier for the first half of the season when she recovered from offseason surgery on both her ankles. Reeve beat out Golden State’s Natalie Nakase and Washington’s Sydney Johnson.
— Comeback Player of the Year: Clark. The Fever guard missed much of last season with a variety of injuries. She came back strong this year, playing in 40 games. She averaged 22.3 points, 8.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds. Washington’s Georgia Amoore and Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot also received votes.
— Most Improved Player: Jessica Shepard. The Dallas Wings forward came to the team as a free agent and excelled. Shepard averaged career highs in points (14.5), rebounds (11.1), assists (5.3) and minutes (31.7). Shepard had six triple-doubles this season. Washington’s Shakira Austin and Seattle Dominique Malonga were next in the balloting.
— Sixth Woman of the Year: Janelle Salaun. The Valkyries forward came off the bench in all 40 games she played this season and averaged 12.7 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 39.2% from behind the 3-point line. She led all reserves in scoring this season and the Golden State bench averaged over 36 points a game. Marine Johannes of New York was next in the voting.

HUGE SECOND QUARTER CARRIES VALKYRIES PAST WINGS IN PLAYOFF OPENER
Cecilia Zandalasini and Tiffany Hayes combined for 32 points in a first-half blitz, Gabby Williams finished the game with 20 points and the Golden State Valkyries recorded the first playoff win in franchise history with a 104-80 romp over the Dallas Wings in Game 1 of the first-round series Sunday night in San Francisco.
Making her WNBA postseason debut, point guard Paige Bueckers used 9-for-10 shooting to put up a team-high 21 points in 25 minutes for the Wings, who face elimination in the best-of-three when they host Game 2 on Wednesday.
Golden State was swept 2-0 in the first round by Minnesota as an expansion team last year.
Dallas, which had seven wins in its last eight regular-season games, led for much of the first quarter and was down just 21-20 after 10 minutes. The second-seeded Valkyries dominated at both ends of the floor in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 37-11 to go up by 27 points at halftime.
A Bueckers hoop had the seventh-seeded Wings within 34-26 with 6:28 remaining in the first half before Golden State ran off 24 of the period’s last 29 points, blowing the game open at 58-31.
Zandalasini, on two 3-pointers and a pair of three-point plays, did half the Valkyries’ scoring in the flurry. Williams and Veronica Burton, who also buried a pair of 3-pointers in the run, did the rest of the scoring with six points apiece.
Zandalasini scored 17 points, Hayes 15 and Williams 13 in the first half, while Bueckers had 17.
Golden State extended its lead to 34 points in the third period, prompting both coaches to empty their benches over the final 15 minutes.
Zandalasini wound up as the game’s leading scorer with 22 points, hitting seven of her 11 shots, including 4 of 5 from deep. The Valkyries outscored the Wings 54-18 from beyond the arc, connecting on 18 of their 36 attempts.
Hayes shot 7-for-10 and dropped in three 3-pointers in a 21-point performance off the bench, while Burton chipped in with a team-high five assists to complement 10 points. Kayla Thornton also totaled 10 points for the winners.
Golden State center Kiah Stokes was the game’s leading rebounder with eight.
Bueckers hit both her 3-point attempts and also found time for a team-high six rebounds for the Wings, who lost despite shooting 46.7% overall (28 of 60). Maddy Siegrist and Kitija Laksa added 11 points apiece. Arike Ogunbowale, Dallas’ second-leading scorer during the regular season, was held to 10 points on 2-for-7 shooting.
Odyssey Sims took advantage of extensive second-half playing time to run up a game-high seven assists for the visitors, who were swept 3-0 in the regular season by Golden State.

RHYNE HOWARD, ANGEL REESE POWER DREAM PAST MYSTICS IN GAME 1
Rhyne Howard scored 26 points and went 10 for 10 from the free-throw line to help the Atlanta Dream rally for a 92-77 victory over the visiting Washington Mystics in the opening game of a best-of-three first-round series on Sunday night.
Allisha Gray added 22 points, and Angel Reese posted a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double for the fourth-seeded Dream, who trailed by 11 points in the second quarter. DeWanna Bonner scored 13 points off the bench and Jordin Canada had 10 points and 11 assists for Atlanta, which forced 22 Washington turnovers.
Sonia Citron led the No. 5-seeded Mystics with 25 points, followed by Kiki Iriafen’s 15 points and 14 rebounds. Shakira Austin had 12 points and 16 boards for Washington, which will host Atlanta in the second game on Wednesday.
After trailing by five at halftime, Atlanta opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run and grabbed its first lead since the game’s opening minute. The Dream used another 7-0 spurt to build a 52-45 lead on a pair of Howard free throws with 4:44 remaining in the third.
Bonner and Gray had consecutive layups before Reese completed a three-point play to give the Dream a 61-48 lead. Atlanta led 65-53 entering the fourth.
The margin ballooned to 70-53 on Howard’s triple with 8:56 left. Howard connected on a midrange jumper to make it 81-65, but Washington answered with nine straight points to pull within seven with 3:26 remaining.
Atlanta outscored the visitors 11-3 the rest of the way to secure the pivotal series-opening win.
Atlanta scored first on Howard’s 3-pointer just 22 seconds into the game, giving the Dream their first — and last — lead of the first half.
Washington jumped out to a 14-5 lead on consecutive triples from Citron and Michaela Onyenwere.
Howard closed the first quarter with a midrange jumper to cut Atlanta’s deficit to five.
Washington scored the first six points of the second quarter to open up a 32-21 edge. Down 36-28, Atlanta reserve Madina Okot’s layup began a 6-0 Dream spurt to close the gap to two with 3:37 left in the first half.
After Betnijah Laney-Hamilton drilled a 3-pointer and Georgia Amoore made a layup to extend Washington’s lead to seven, Canada finished the first half with a basket to trim the Dream’s halftime deficit to 41-36.

A’JA WILSON BEGINS PLAYOFFS WITH DOMINANT SHOWING IN ACES’ WIN OVER FEVER
A’ja Wilson matched her playoff career highs in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 38 and 16, to lead the third-seeded Las Vegas Aces to a 102-85 win over the visiting sixth-seeded Indiana Fever on Sunday.
Las Vegas (1-0) took control of the best-of-three series opener in the second quarter when Wilson scored 11 of the Aces’ 26 points during a pivotal run.
Las Vegas broke open a game which was tied at 36 with 7:20 remaining before halftime to go into intermission with a 62-47 lead. Indiana (0-1) never recovered, trailing in the second half by as many as 27 points.
Wilson’s dominance was the catalyst for the Aces. She shot a blistering 15-of-19 from the floor on a variety of interior baskets and mid-range jumpshots set up on spin moves from the high- and low-post.
Wilson’s 16 rebounds also helped Las Vegas to a 31-24 advantage on the glass.
With her effort in both phases, Wilson produced just the fourth playoff game of 35-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in league history. She is also responsible for the third, which came in last year’s postseason against the Fever as well.
Complementing Wilson from the perimeter was Jackie Young, who went for 21 points and 10 assists. Young shot 3-of-7 from 3-point range, leading the Aces to a 9-of-19 afternoon as a team from long range (47.4%).
Indiana, meanwhile, knocked down 12-of-31 from beyond the arc (38.7%), with Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Sophie Cunningham making three apiece. The Fever managed only 18-of-36 shooting from inside the arc, however, while the Aces went 29-of-45.
Boston led Indiana with 18 points, and Clark recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists. Las Vegas limited Indiana’s season-long leading scorer, Kelsey Mitchell, to just 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-6 from 3-point range.
The backcourt of Mitchell and Clark also combined for nine of Indiana’s 16 turnovers, which the Aces converted into 28 points.
Game 2 is set for Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

BREANNA STEWART POURS IN 34 AS LIBERTY SURPRISE LYNX IN GAME 1
Breanna Stewart had a game-high 34 points and 12 rebounds, and the eighth-seeded New York Liberty rallied after being down at halftime to defeat top-seeded Minnesota 91-75 Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis.
The Liberty lead the series 1-0 with a chance to win the best-of-three series Tuesday night in Brooklyn.
“We were ready to go,” Stewart said after the game. “I think our entire group — we knew what it was going to take. It was loud in here, but we kept our composure.”
Stewart was 11 for 18 from the floor, 10 for 12 from the free throw line and made two 3-pointers. New York shot 13 of 25 from three-point range. Leonie Fiebich made four 3-pointers and had 16 points for the Liberty.
Minnesota is 0-3 all-time in series after losing Game 1 in a best-of-three.
Sunday was supposed to be the coming out party for star rookie Olivia Miles and the Lynx, but Miles was held to 3-of-12 shooting from the floor and 11 points and Lynx forward Napheesa Collier fouled out with 12 points.
Leading by five entering the fourth quarter, Stewart and the Liberty put it away in the fourth with a 17-6 run that included a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer by Stewart from the top of the key.
“I want to will my team to win the game, and do whatever I can offensively and defensively,” Stewart said. “I had that one three at the end where it just feels like everything is going your way.”
Minnesota opened the game scoring the first six points including a pair of buckets by Miles, but the Liberty responded with a 15-0 run to seize control.
New York made its first four threes and led by as many as 10 points early.
The Lynx charged back in the second quarter. Nia Brodie made three 3-pointers in the quarter, including one from the corner to tie the score at 36 with 1:23 left in the half. The Lynx then closed with a flourish. Courtney Williams drained a triple to make it 41-40, then Miles nailed a step-back three with 2.4 seconds left, igniting the crowd.
Minnesota sank six 3-point attempts in the first half. Brodie had four, tying the most for any player in Lynx playoff history in a first half.

UNITED STATES STORMS BACK IN SINGLES TO WIN PRESIDENTS CUP 17-13
Members of the United States team in the Presidents Cup will covet the experiences across the four days of competition, perhaps none more than Jacob Bridgeman.
He provided the clinching moment Sunday outside Chicago.
Bridgeman wrapped up the team victory by winning the final hole against Australia’s Min Woo Lee for a 1-up result.
“Someone in the crowd yelled, ‘You’re the best putter in the world,’“ Bridgeman said of the moments before his final stroke. “And I was like, yep, I’m going to make this thing. It was the coolest moment.”
The U.S. team took control by midday and completed the largest final-day comeback in event history to win over the International team at Medinah Country Club’s No. 3 course.
The final tally was 17-13, with the U.S. prevailing in nine of 12 singles matches (with one tie) on the final day.
“I think these guys never lost faith,” U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker said. “I know what that team room is like. I told the guys last night that funny stuff happens here. Medinah has a history of funny things happening.”
Jackson Koivun, just a few months into his pro career after starring collegiately for Auburn, put the U.S. on the cusp of victory with a birdie on the 18th hole to secure a 2-up triumph against South Korea’s Si Woo Kim. Then Bridgeman completed the task.
“I cannot get over what Jackson Koivun did today,” Snedeker said. “I put him in a really tough spot out there. We thought he could handle it. Sure enough, he did.”
The U.S. trailed 7-3 after Friday’s play and faced a 10 1/2-7 1/2 deficit entering Sunday, when President Donald Trump was in attendance.
“This is by far and away the most nervous, most fun, pressure-packed environment that I’ve ever been a part of,” said U.S. golfer Chris Gotterup, who won his singles match.
The International team hasn’t won the Presidents Cup since its only victory in 1998.
“The U.S. Team came out firing,” International captain Geoff Ogilvy said. “We knew they would. The crowd came out, which is great for them.”
Among the late matches, Koivun trailed by two holes until winning four in a five-hole stretch. He was the only undefeated U.S. golfer in the competition.
“I had some goals, but for it to come this quickly is definitely shocking, and I’m just thankful and grateful for the trust the captains put in me to put me out in three of the five matches,” Koivun said.
On Sunday, the U.S. side won six of the first eight matches to surge into the lead.
Cameron Young broke a tie in his match by winning three consecutive holes (Nos. 11-13) on the way to defeating Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune 3 and 2 in the day’s first match.
“Just knowing how important the points are early,” Young said. “I got off to such a strange start. I hit a bunch of really nice shots and found myself 2-down through four. Really nothing changed. Just kind of kept going, kept hitting good shots and finally got a putt to go in on 12 and then hit a nice one here on the last.”
South Korea’s Tom Kim countered for the International team, beating Wyndham Clark 3 and 2.
Justin Thomas finished a 5-and-3 victory against Canada’s Corey Conners, while Scottie Scheffler topped Colombia’s Nico Echavarria 2 and 1.
When South Korea’s Sungjae Im defeated Sam Burns 3 and 1, it pushed the International squad to a 12 1/2-10 1/2 lead. But the U.S. team was ahead in five of the remaining matches and the other two were tied.
Then Gotterup grabbed a 1-up victory against South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Patrick Cantlay followed with a 2-and-1 triumph against Australia’s Adam Scott, and Collin Morikawa completed a 1-up decision against Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
After Bridgeman’s clincher, Xander Schauffele completed a 2-and-1 victory against New Zealand’s Ryan Fox. Schauffele had a chance at providing the clinching point for the U.S. side, but his par putt on the par-3 16th hole, after his tee shot went into a bunker, was off the mark. That allowed Fox to win the hole and extend the match.
Russell Henley and Canada’s Nick Taylor completed the competition with the only tie of the day.

YUNA NISHIMURA GETS MAIDEN LPGA WIN IN ARKANSAS
Japan’s Yuna Nishimura calmly closed out the first LPGA Tour win of her career on Sunday, shooting a final-round, 5-under-par 66 at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark.
Nishimura totaled 21-under 192 over 54 holes for the victory, securing a five-stroke margin over three golfers who tied for second.
Arkansas has been kind to Nishimura for some time now. One of the 26-year-old’s previous highest finishes, third place, came in this same tournament in 2023. Her other third-place finish came in the 2024 HSBC Women’s World Championship.
“I still can’t believe it,” Nishimura said. “I still shake my (head). But, yeah, I’m proud of myself and, yeah, I’m super happy.”
Nishimura had a five-stroke lead coming into the day but got off to a slow start with two bogeys over her first six holes at Pinnacle Country Club.
Any illusion of her faltering quickly faded away as she rallied for birdies on Nos. 8 and 11, and she essentially put the win away when she sank an eagle on No. 14 and followed that up with a birdie on the next hole for good measure.
“I was kind of debating on the distance, but I told myself to go aggressive until the very end and I went for it,” Nishimura said of the eagle.
“The second half (of the round was) going to be when I had to kind of go aggressive, so I kind of went for it and it all worked out.”
She coasted to the finish line from there, ending the tournament with the same five-stroke advantage she entered the day with.
Japan’s Aki Iwai shot 9-under 62 to shoot up the board into a tie for second with Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen (64) and South Korea’s In Gee Chun (65).
Iwai’s bogey-free round included nine birdies, including five in a row at one point.
“So today I was thinking it’s going to be low every player,” Iwai said. “That’s why I have to go. I need more aggressive and that’s why … today was a solid day.”
Wannasaen endured a bogey but had eight birdies on the way to her fourth career top-10 finish.
“I would say this year is really struggle with, but right now, because I think I let everything like go, you know, because I really stressful,” Wannasaen said. “I cry every month, so like last month and this month was the first time I didn’t cry.”
Chun earned her third top-10 placement, balancing seven birdies against a bogey.
“I can’t control other players play, so just try and focus on my game,” Chun said. “… Yuna makes a really great round all three days; I want to just say congrats to her.”
Three more players tied for fifth at 15 under: Americans Jenny Bae (64) and Auston Kim (67) and England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff (66).

KYLE LARSON WINS AT KANSAS TO INCREASE HIS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
Despite leading the most laps, Kyle Larson was at his best when he was running second.
The two-time champion dominated at Kansas Speedway for most of Sunday but had to rally in the final 30 laps to be first to the checkers for the second time in three races, winning the NASCAR Cup Series’ Hollywood Casino 400 in Kansas City, Kan.
Chase Briscoe passed Larson with 30 to go, but the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet rebounded and passed the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on the backstretch with seven laps left.
Larson, who topped the field for 235 laps, beat Austin Cindric’s Team Penske Ford by 0.565 seconds for his second 2026 win and fourth career at Kansas.
Denny Hamlin, Briscoe and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five.
“I really thought when Chase got by, he was just going to stretch out,” said Larson, who notched 76 points, a season high for any driver and one more than Blaney did in July’s Atlanta race. “I got some lines going and just kind of settled in and tried to take care of my tires.
“I think it’s just easier to be the hunter rather than the hunted. … When he got in front of me, I could see he started getting really loose. That was fun, such a good day. Max points. I was going to be happy with second without the race win, but to get the lead (is) a big deal for the points.”
Briscoe said letting the victory slip away was frustrating and added he too was better in the runner-up spot.
“It just went really, really loose. … It was actually better for me to be in second behind him, especially how much he was aero blocking,” said Briscoe, whose lone win was at Chicago on July 5. “It would just tighten me up and allow me to be a little bit better.”
Larson entered with a one-point lead in the Chase’s championship standings over Hamlin and will go to Las Vegas with a 26-point advantage over the No. 11 driver.
Chevrolet recorded win No. 5 in the past six races at Kansas.
In the first of three straight 1 1/2-mile speedway races, Joey Logano started at the point with the help of last Saturday’s Bristol win and the NASCAR metric, but Larson immediately moved past the No. 22 Ford. Tyler Reddick, who won at Kansas from the pole in April, plummeted to 33rd at one point in the 267-lap event.
Larson led all 35 laps before a competition caution, and he picked up where he left off with Hamlin, Carson Hocevar and Cindric behind at the 50-lap mark. A little shuffling left Larson with maximum bonus points as Stage 1 ended and Hamlin, Cindric, Hocevar and Christopher Bell filling the next positions.
On Lap 122’s restart, Hocevar drifted up the track, banged against Ty Gibbs and wrecked Bubba Wallace as three Chase drivers were involved in the six-car frontstretch mess.
Larson built a giant 2 1/2-second lead over Cindric in Stage 2’s closing circuits and again maxed out on stage points by claiming his second segment. Hamlin finished third with Briscoe and Bell following the trio.
Reddick’s No. 45 Toyota came to life, rallied to pick off five spots and moved up to sixth shortly after the restart, while Larson battled Briscoe and Cindric up front.
However, Reddick’s crew had a miscue on Lap 219 that led to an 18-second pit stop. Reddick, the series leader with five victories this season, finished 11th.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts kept talking about turning the page on their season-ending seven-game losing streak that cost them a playoff spot last year.
Two more losses to start the season only exacerbated the pain.
On Sunday, they finally put an end to the league’s longest active losing streak — and perhaps much of the chatter.
Spencer Shrader fought through a groin injury to make four field goals, including a 43-yarder with 16 seconds to go, and the Colts’ beleaguered defense held up long enough to finally lose out a 19-17 victory over the Houston Texans — their first win since last November and their first win on American soil since last October.
“It’s awesome, obviously, to get that victory,” coach Shane Steichen said. “To get that win against a division opponent is huge for our football team and now we’ve got to go to London and try to get that done over there, too.”
For the Colts (1-2), the celebration inside the locker room was a welcome respite from the loud critics outside of it.
No, Indy didn’t win many style points.
Daniel Jones was 24 of 36 for 235 yards and one touchdown, but also fumbled three times and lost two. The second set up Houston’s late go-ahead touchdown.
Jonathan Taylor had 23 carries for only 68 yards. Keenan Allen hauled in six passes for 63 yards and his first TD with the Colts and Josh Downs caught five passes for 77 yards. The defense also gave up a touchdown with 1:48 to play, once again putting the Colts hopes in peril.
This time, though, Jones made the most of his last chance. He hooked up with Laquon Treadwell for 20 yards. Taylor added a 5-yard run and Allen’s 5-yard catch on third down came up 1 yard short of a first down, but it was enough to set up Shrader for the 53-yarder.
“I feel like today was one of my best days with how I was striking the ball,” said Shrader, who injured his groin after the opening kickoff. “So I kind of wonder whether it was one of those things where you know sometimes if you slow down a little bit, you actually end up getting a better result because you’re smoother? I felt like might have happened today.”
Houston’s five-game winning streak in the series ended when C.J. Stroud’s desperation heave sailed out of bounds short and wide of the end zone as time expired. The Texans are 0-3 for the straight year as the offense sputters.
C.J. Stroud was 16 of 27 for 167 yards with one TD. The Texans rushed 21 times for 70 yards and had only 223 total yards against a team that allowed more than 500 yards in each of its first two games.
“These are the types of games we’re supposed to win,” Stroud said. “We fought, but, at the end of the day, there’s a lot of things that need to be fixed.”
It looked as though Indy’s struggles would continue when Jones lost the football and Tommy Togiai recovered at the Texans 46-yard line with 4:40 left in the game. Seven plays later, Woody Marks scored on 1-yard run and the extra point gave Houston a 17-16 lead with 1:48 to go.
Instead, the Colts rallied to end their skid.
“Happy,” Steichen said, describing the locker room. “Very happy.”
Injuries
Texans: LB Azeez Al-Shaair left in the first half with a groin injury, returned at the start of the second half, left again in the third quarter after re-injuring his groin and returned again late in the game. DE Mario Edwards and WR Xavier Hutchinson both left with injuries late in the fourth quarter. Edwards went to the locker room with a left leg injury. Coach DeMeco Ryans had no postgame updates.
Colts: DE Laiatu Latu left early with a chest injury. He returned in the second half.
Moving up
Allen’s first catch of the day was not only his first score with the Colts, it also sent him past former Texans star and Hall of Famer Andre Johnson, for 12th on the NFL’s career list. He now has 1,068 receptions — trailing Colts receivers coach Reggie Wayne by two for No. 11.
Allen also had his 71st career TD reception, moving him into a tie for 50th all-time with Hall of Famer Bob Hayes and Wesley Walker.
Instructional lesson
Referee Ronald Torbert gave the officiating crew a vulgar instruction while his microphone remained on after announcing the fumble on the kickoff had been reversed.
“You guys better get your (expletive) together,” Torbert blurted out, drawing laughter inside the stadium.
The reversal gave Houston the ball, instead of setting up Indy at the Texans 28, and Stroud led Houston to its first TD, a 1-yard pass from Stroud to Foster Moreau to make it 10-7 late in the third quarter..

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 27, 2026) — The No. 6 Indiana Fever fell to the No. 3 Las Vegas Aces in Game One of the First Round of the 2026 WNBA Playoffs. The Fever will now return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Game Two in the best-of-three series on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. ET, broadcast on Prime.
In a rematch of last year’s WNBA semifinals, the two sides battled through the first quarter, with Las Vegas in front 27-23. The Aces expanded their lead to double-digits in the second quarter, up 62-47 at the halftime break. Outscoring the Fever 24-18, the Aces maintained their lead over the Fever through the third quarter. Despite outscoring the Aces, the Fever were unable to overcome the deficit in the fourth quarter, resulting in the 102-84 loss.

Caitlin Clark earned her first career double-double in the postseason with 15 points and 10 assists.
Additionally, Caitlin Clark’s 10 assists mark a postseason career high, surpassing her previous record of nine set against the Connecticut Sun on Sept. 25, 2024. The total marks the second-most assists in an Indiana Fever playoff game, one shy of the franchise record of 11 set by Tamika Catchings in 2009.
With 12 points scored, Kelsey Mitchell brought her career postseason points to 228, the seventh most in franchise history.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Indiana women’s soccer falls to Northwestern 2-0 as they move to four straight conference losses. The Hoosiers made a strong effort during the first half, but Northwestern was able to find their footing, scoring both goals in the second half.
With the loss, the Hoosiers hold a 4-6-1 record overall and 1-4 in conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
The Hoosier offense made several attempts at goal in the first half, forcing four saves by the Northwestern keeper.

PURDUE VOLLEYBALL
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 10 Purdue Boilermakers (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) fell to the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers (8-4, 2-0 Big Ten) in the final Mackey Match of the season (18-25, 15-25, 21-25). With the result, Purdue’s sweep streak came to an end, finishing with six straight – the second-longest mark in program history.
The loss was the first for the Boilermakers against a top-10 team this season (1-1).
Freshman Addy Tindall led the Boilermakers once again and was the first to reach double-digit kills for either team. In total, she finished the day with 11 kills – tying with Wisconsin’s highly-touted freshman Decelise Champion to lead all players.
Grace Heaney was on the verge of recording her second consecutive double-double against the Badgers, registering nine kills and 10 digs.
Setter Taylor Anderson dished out 30 assists, while also adding seven digs and one service ace.
MaryKate Scheumann tied her career-high in service aces with two in the match. Scheumann also added six digs and one assist against the Badgers.
Dior Charles notched an errorless performance on the attack with three kills on seven total attacks (.429%). Defensively, Charles gave Purdue a spark, leading the team with four blocks.
The match served as alumnae day for former Purdue volleyball players. The team welcomed home 30 alums to be honored during the match.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Fighting Irish Classic belonged to Purdue Women’s Golf, as the Boilermakers dominated two days of play to win the tournament by a whopping 22 strokes. Led by medalist Samantha Brown (-4), Purdue finished 1-under as a team to capture the team title at Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
The Boilermakers’ three-round total of 851 (286-277-288) was the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Purdue led by five after the opening round, and by the end of the day following play on Saturday afternoon, the lead ballooned to 19. The Boilermakers did not let up on Sunday, posting the lowest round of the day and increasing their margin of victory to 22 strokes over Louisville (+21). Wisconsin (+28) rounded out the Top 3, while North Florida and host Notre Dame tied for fourth at 30-over par.
The victory secured the Old Gold and Black a team title for the fifth straight season. It was the seventh win under head coach Zack Byrd, the most in a 5-year span since 2010-14. Purdue paced the field in birdies (50), par-3 scoring (E), par-4 scoring (+11) and par-5 scoring (-2). Individually, all five Boilermakers cracked the Top 15.
Brown earned her first individual title, firing a career-low 209 (70-67-72) for the 10th-best 54-hole total in school history. The Westfield, Indiana native made a field-best 15 birdies throughout the tournament, while also leading the field in par-5 scoring (-3). She finished 4-under par for a three-shot victory over Xavier’s Isabel Brozena, as the two golfers entered the final round tied atop the leaderboard.
Ashley Kim (73-70-72—215) and Luana Valero (73-71-71—215) tied for seventh at 2-over. Valero’s 71 (E) led the way on Sunday, starting out on fire with three birdies through her first five holes. Kim matched Brown with a 72 (+1) during the final round; she began and ended her day with birdies. Valero collected her fourth career Top 10, while Kim earned her second Top 10 performance as a Boilermaker.
Lauren Timpf tied for 11th (+4). She carded a season-low 69 (-2) in the second round, while ranking third in the field in par-4 scoring throughout the tournament (E). Olivia Hemmila was one stroke behind Timpf at 5-over, placing 14th on the individual leaderboard for her best finish at Purdue.
Up next, Purdue kicks off the month of October by returning to the Windy City Collegiate Classic (Oct. 5-6) as three-time tournament champions (2008, 2009, 2010).

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue scored three goals in the opening 22 minutes to defeat Minnesota, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Folk Field. Purdue’s 10th win on the season makes it the fastest team to reach 10 wins since the 2007 Big Ten Championship team.
The Boilermakers improved to 10-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in Big Ten play with the shutout victory. The four Big Ten wins are also Purdue’s most since the 2021 season. Krystina Wolf made six saves to record the shutout and earn her 10th win of the season, putting her at 10th all-time in the Purdue record book for single-season wins.
McKenzie Carle opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing a chance assisted by Jaiden Anderson and Emilia Deppe for her eighth goal of the season. Carle’s goal was her third consecutive in the last two matches after earning a brace against Illinois. Just over two minutes later, Anderson doubled the Boilermakers’ advantage, with Gabriela Angulo and Lauren Adam providing the assists. Anderson’s 10th goal of the season puts her tied for fifth in the record book.

Princeton, N.J. – The Boilermakers wrapped up Princeton’s Ted Farnsworth Invitational, earning two singles victories on the final day.
Overall, in his first collegiate compeition, freshman Lorenzo Balducci went undefeated at 3-0 in singles while also picking up two doubles wins.

NOTRE DAME VOLLEYBALL
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Notre Dame volleyball team made quick work of the Syracuse Orange Sunday afternoon, securing the first conference win of the season in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-14. It’s the 31st win all-time against the Orange and the first win in Syracuse since 2022.
The Irish used a steady attack with multiple players contributing throughout the match. Mae Kordas recorded nine kills, one ahead of Sydney Helmers’ eight tallies. Anna Bjork tallied seven kills and seven blocks as she continued to impress down the final stretch of September.
Six different Irish recorded assists, led by 16 from Maya Baker and 15 from Lily Fenton. Notre Dame dished out 40 assists (13.33 per set) as a team.
Notre Dame was sharp defensively, as Maya Evens recorded 16 digs in the back row. Up front, the Irish defense totaled 10 team blocks, highlighted by the seven from Bjork and five from Isabella Sangha.
ACC play continues next week with a pair of meetings against No. 4 Louisville. Notre Dame heads on the road to play the Cardinals on Wednesday, September 30th at 7 p.m. before hosting Louisville on Saturday, October 3rd at 1 p.m. ET. Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S GOLF
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team hosted the Fighting Irish Classic over the weekend at the Warren Golf Course, finishing tied for fourth in the 14 team field with a 30-over 882.
Purdue won the tournament with a 1-under 851 followed by Louisville (+21) and Wisconsin (+28), the Irish and North Florida (+30).
Jordan Levitt recorded her second-straight top-10 finish to open the 2026-27 campaign, finishing tied for seventh with a 2-over 215 over the three rounds.
Teammates Bridget Wilkie and Faustine Errecade each had notable performances on the weekend, each placing tied for 11th with 4-over 217s. Errecade competed as an individual for the tournament, finishing 1-under over her final 36 holes of play.
Purdue’s Samantha Brown was the individual champion, recording a 4-under 209 over the two days of play.
ROUND ONE:
The tournament featured 36 holes of action on Saturday with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Notre Dame found itself in ninth place following the morning session with an 18-over 302.
Wilkie paced the Irish in round one with a 1-over 72, featuring a very steady round with 15 pars. Levitt carded the second-best Notre Dame score of the opening 18 holes with a 3-over 74. Alexsandra Lapple and Kate Strickland each tallied 7-over 78s to round out the Irish scorers.
ROUND TWO:
The Irish fought back in the afternoon portion of the day, firing a 2-over 286 to climb up the leaderboard into fifth place with an overall score of 20-over heading into Sunday’s final round of competition. The 2-over round was the second-best score recorded by a team in the second round.
Levitt turned in the best round of any Notre Dame golfer on the day, posting a 3-under 68 to move her into the top-10 on the individual leaderboard (T-7th, even par). The sophomore’s round featured five birdies.
Wilkie remained consistent with another 1-over 72 to move her overall score to 2-over on the day. Lapple and teammate Maddy Bante each posted scores of 2-over 73s to complete the strong round from the Fighting Irish and move the team into the top-five after with just 18 holes of play remaining.
ROUND THREE:
Notre Dame closed out the Fighting Irish Classic with a 10-over 294 to move into a tie for fourth with North Florida. The Irish have now finished in the top five in each of their first two tournaments to start the season.

The Bulldogs continued a strong fall over the weekend at the Illinois State Redbird Duals.
Brooke Arington and Sophie Parr posted perfect singles records for the second consecutive weekend, each going 3-0 in matches against players from the host Redbirds, Valparaiso, and Bradley.
Hailey Poplin (3-0) and Kate Fortney (2-0) also were unblemished in singles play, while Elle Martin, Laurel Slechter and Julia Uyesato each went 2-1.
Arington and Lauren Cook won two of their three doubles matches to lead the Butler effort. In all over the two days, the Bulldogs posted a 22-15 record.

Five Bulldogs posted 2-1 marks in singles play over the weekend as Butler was part of the field at the Vredevelt Invitational hosted by Western Michigan.
Nicholas Balthazor, Ronin Kasday, Nicholas Shirley, and freshmen Shane Hand and Wes Worobel each went 2-1, highlighting the Bulldog performance.

BUTLER MEN’S GOLF
Logan Sutto’s medalist performance led the Bulldogs to a team title at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. Butler claimed the 54-hole title by 16 strokes.
Sutto capped his weekend with a three-under 67 Sunday. He got off to a hot start by birdying three of his first six holes and then played level par the rest of the round. Sutto began the day one shot behind Ball State’s Luke Johnston’s lead but overcame him in the final round. Johnston bogeyed the 16th hole and had a double bogey on the 18th to finish one shot behind Sutto.
Sutto’s Sunday 67 – his best round of the weekend – gave him a total of seven-under 203.
The Bulldogs posted the best round of the tournament with a seven-under 273 Sunday. Luke Kruger and Jacob Tarkany each turned in scorecards of two-under 68 Sunday while freshman Nicholas Brooks was at even-70 on the day. Sutto and that trio all finished among the Top 10 individually on the final leaderboard.
The Bulldogs held a two-stroke advantage after the first day of the tournament and ran away with the result with their Sunday performance. Butler finished at 828 (-12). The Bulldogs were 14 shots better than host runner-up Ball State (844, +4) Sunday, giving the Bulldogs a 16-shot pad. Wright State moved into third at (848, +8). There were 16 teams in the field.
Freshman Johnny Leaman’s weekend was highlighted by an ace on the 113-yard 14th hole in Saturday’s afternoon round. He finished in a tie for 50th.

IU INDY WOMEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis women’s soccer team rallied from a halftime deficit to claim a 3-2 home win over Northern Kentucky in Horizon League play on Sunday (Sept. 27) to snap a five-game winless streak. The Jaguars trailed 2-1 at intermission, but scored a pair of unanswered goals to secure a first league win of the season.
Junior Annaliese Black scored the game’s first goal while senior Caroline Kelley and freshman Taylor Townley netted the game-tying and game-winning goals. Sophomore Isabel Oferosky dialed up a dandy against a strong NKU (5-4-1, 1-2 HL) attack, recording nine saves in the victory.
“It was just straight up effort and understanding, sticking with the game plan,” head coach Angela Berry White said. “The first 15 minutes of the game was looking pretty promising for us, we just kind of got away from that. At halftime, we just recalibrated everything, everything from our back line to our midfield to up top and what each and every position was supposed to be accomplishing. They stepped up and they did it for 45 minutes. They listened, and look what happened.”
The Jaguars took a quick lead in the seventh minute when Black finished from in close after a corner kick. Townley got the initial touch which deflected back to Black, who flushed her third score of the year.
NKU countered with tallies in the 32nd and 34th minutes to take the lead and was persistent in the attack with the bulk of their possession in the Jaguar half of the field. The Jags (3-6-2, 1-2 HL) seemingly leveled the play to start the second half with Kelley and Addison Stover challenging with shot attempts in the early moments.
Kelley leveled the score in the 57th minute, thanks in large part to a poor NKU restart. After Kelley had just flown a shot over the bar leading to a goal kick, the ensuing restart when right to Kelley, who calmly moved into shooting range and laced a shot inside the left post for her 15th career goal.
The Jaguars seized the lead in the 71st minute when Townley headed a Maci Sammons corner kick into the lower left-hand corner for her first career score.
“It’s kind of rewarding, but really the attackers did all the job,” Townley said of getting forward for a score. “I mean, I just had to tap it in – great service again.”
The Jaguars staved off NKU over the closing minutes as the defensive third stayed solid and composed under pressure. Townley, Shannon Phillips and Katie Hoog all played the full 90 minutes while Bethany Hartigan played 86 minutes with two brief respites to clean and patch blood.
Kelley fired a team-high four shots while Madeline Chappa attempted three.
NKU finished with a 19-17 shot advantage and 11-9 margin in shots on goal. The Norse also closed with 11 corner kicks, but were largely unsuccessful in capitalizing in close.
IU Indy will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 1 when it faces Cleveland State on the road at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

IU INDY MEN’S GOLF
MUNCIE, Ind. – IU Indianapolis men’s golf senior Titus Boswell carded a final round, 1-under 69 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club on Sunday (Sept. 27), helping the Jaguars to final round 292. The Jaguars ultimately finished the tournament finishing 11th of 16 teams at 870 (288-290-292) for the weekend.
Boswell used his final round 69 to climb to a 17th-place finish at 213 (72-72-69) for the event. He made five birdies in his final round and played his final eight holes to 2-under to record his 37th career round of par or better.
Keaton Parmley chimed in with 3-over 73 with a pair of birdies and Jack Scudder posted 4-over 74. Senior Brady Schier rounded out the scorers at 6-over 76 while Tommy Klinker shot 7-over 77. Rookie Nathan Springer was tops among the individual entries at 3-over 73.
Parmley finished the tournament tied for 21st overall at 4-over 214 (65-76-73).
Scudder finished the tournament with a team-high 10 birdies while Boswell paced the Jags with 36 pars.
Butler won the event at 828 while host Ball State was second at 844. Butler’s Logan Sutto earned medalist honors at 7-under 203 to win by a single shot.
The Jaguars will be back in action when they participate in Cleveland State’s Tom Tontimonia Invitational in Westlake, Ohio, on Oct. 5-6.

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Ball State field hockey team snapped its recent four-game skid in definitive fashion Sunday afternoon, pulling out a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Longwood University at the Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals set the tone early, showcasing an aggressive and highly structured offensive game plan that allowed them to completely dominate the scoring circle. Ball State’s unrelenting pressure consistently kept the Lancers on their heels, creating a multitude of high-quality opportunities inside the critical zone.
The breakthrough came via clinical execution on a first-quarter penalty corner. Jade Vandevoorde inserted the ball to Emily Kate Covert, who perfectly setup Lauren Lewis for the game’s opening goal. Both defenses then dug in, keeping the scoreboard quiet and allowing Ball State to carry a 1-0 advantage into intermission.
Ball State extended its cushion in the third quarter when Emma-Lynn Harter found the back of the cage off an assist from Lewis. The Cardinals continued to leverage their set-piece draws to stretch the Longwood backline and generate high-danger scoring looks, executing flawlessly on both ends of the pitch to carry a 2-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
Longwood answered early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit, but Vandevoorde quickly restored breathing room for the Cardinals, striking a few minutes later off a sharp assist from Vivienne Quinn. From there, the Ball State defense remained steadfast, neutralizing the Lancers’ transitional counterattacks to secure the victory.
The performance marked the Cardinals’ most explosive offensive showing of the season, yielding 21 shots (16 on goal) and a game-high 12 penalty corners.
With the crucial Mid-American Conference victory securely in hand, Ball State moves back into the win column as they prepare to head out on a three-game road trip.

MUNCIE, Ind. – – Led by a -6 (204) from sophomore Luke Johnston, the Ball State men’s golf team finished second among the 16-team field at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational hosted by the Delaware Country Club.
Johnston closed the event with his second straight sub-par round Sunday, shooting -1 (69), to lead the Cardinals on the final day of action on the 6,624-yard course. The effort helped Johnston finish second overall, at six-under, led by a second-round effort of -6 (64) which tied his collegiate low.
As a team, the Cardinals shot +7 (287) over the final day of competition, also counting rounds of +1 (71) from junior Happy Gilmore, +3 (73) from senior Avery Mahoney and +4 (74) from senior Cameron Young.
Ball State finished the tournament at +4 (844), trailing only in-state rival Butler who won the event at -12 (828). Butler’s Logan Sutto took home medalist honors, finishing one stroke ahead of Johnston at -7 (203).
Sunday’s final round also freshman Brayden Lamborne lead the Cardinals’ “B” squad with a collegiate-low round of +1 (71). The effort helped Lamborne climb 14 spots up the final leaderboard, Ball State’s biggest upward mover of the day.
Over the course of the 54-hole event, Johnston led all players with a par 4 average of -7 (3.81), helping him earn the runner-up finish. He also ranked second among the field with 14 total birdies.
As a team, Ball State’s “A” squad posted 53 total birdies in the tournament, to rank third among the field, while the “B” squad added 28 total birdies.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – – Freshman Taylor Larkins turned in her second top three finish of the season Sunday, finishing play in the Fighting Irish Classic at E (213) to tie for third among the 81-player field.
“Taylor is just so darn tough,” head coach Cameron Andry said. “She doesn’t get flustered, just makes great decisions and hits good shots to the correct spot all the time. The putts just weren’t falling today but she played another stellar round of golf!”
Larkins closed the 54-hole event by shooting +1 (72) in her final round, adding two more birdies and 13 more pars to her weekend total. In fact, Larkins led the tournament field with 44 total pars, five more than the next closest player on the 6,062-yard Warren Golf Course.
As a team, the Cardinals shot +18 (302) in its final round, counting scores of +4 (75) from freshman Elizabeth Coleman, +6 (77) from junior Sophie Korthuijs and +7 (78) from sophomore Ashley Kirkland.
The effort helped Ball State maintain its spot in seventh overall among the 14-team field at +42 (894). Purdue won the event at -1 (851), with Samantha Brown taking medalists honors for the Boilermakers at -4 (209).
“I’m so proud of the entire team,” Andry exclaimed. “This was a tough week with a tournament in Colorado, a missed flight, then heading straight to South Bend to play a challenging course against some great competition!”
Playing in its second tournament of the week, and third tournament in the span of 14 days, the Cardinals ranked second among the tournament field with 175 total pars, while ranking fifth overall in par 4 average.
“We certainly showed some signs of fatigue, especially today in the final round, but each one of them fought so hard until the last putt dropped,” Andry added.
The Ball State women’s golf team will get some much-deserved rest before closing the fall portion of its 2025-26 schedule at the Diamante Intercollegiate Oct. 18-20 at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

OXFORD, Ohio – Anna Kate Robillard scored her second goal of the 2026 season in Ball State soccer team’s 1-1 draw at Miami on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals (3-4-3, 0-1-2 MAC) only generated two shots on goal, but Robillard was able to score one off an assist by Annika Klauss in the 62nd minute. Mary Jane Keller was also credited with a shot on goal in the match.
The host RedHawks (5-5-1, 1-1-1 MAC) tied the Cardinals with their lone goal in the 65th minute. Averie Bierker found the back of the net off an assist by Kailyn Morrison.
Goalkeeper Kate Pallante made four saves in the match, bringing her 2026 season total to 38. LG Moncrief, Ainsley Schaufele and Grier Isaacson joined Pallante as Ball State student-athletes to go the full 90 minutes.
The RedHawks outshot the Cardinals 12-6 and led in corners (2-1), while also being whistled for more fouls (14-9).
The Cardinals will be back at Briner Sports Complex on Thursday to battle Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m.

INDIANA STATE WOMEN’S GOLF
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Indiana State battled to the final whistle Sunday afternoon at Valparaiso, pulling level in the closing minutes before the Beacons answered late to claim a 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference victory.
The Sycamores were active from the opening whistle and created several early opportunities through Tori Angelo, Alex Lehnert, and Hailey Morgan. Indiana State earned multiple corner kicks and sustained attacking pressure throughout the first half, while goalkeeper Sofie Hansen recorded key saves to keep the match scoreless through the opening 45 minutes.
Valparaiso broke through in the 63rd minute when Martha Goddard found the back of the net to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead. Indiana State continued to push forward throughout the second half, generating chances from Meagyn Riffle, Morgan, Quinn Urquhart, and Lehnert as the Sycamores searched for an equalizer.
Indiana State’s persistence paid off late in the match. In the 88th minute, Lehnert delivered a pass to Riffle, who finished a right-footed strike into the top right corner to even the score at 1-1. Following a VAR review, the goal stood and gave the Sycamores new energy entering the final minutes.
The match turned moments later when Valparaiso was awarded a penalty kick following a handball. Kiara Desiderio converted from the spot in the 89th minute, giving the Beacons advantage at 2-1. Indiana State created one final opportunity before the end of regulation, but Valparaiso’s goalkeeper made the save to preserve the result.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Led by Julian Dugan’s 10th-place finish, the Purdue Fort Wayne men’s golf team finished fourth at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 27).
The Mastodons climbed one spot from Saturday’s opening two rounds. Brock Reschly led the ‘Dons in the final round with a 2-under performance, while Nick Bellush was 1-under. Dugan and Ball State transfer Gavin Hare each finished with an even 70.
Dugan led the Mastodons individually for the event, tying for 10th with a 73-68-70-211. The junior opened on hole five and recorded pars on his first seven holes. He added birdies on holes 12, 15 and 18 before a par on hole two put him at 1-over. Dugan then birdied his next hole to return to even before closing with a par.
Reschly moved up 16 spots to finish in 12th at 71-73-68-212. He opened with a par before recording back-to-back birdies. After another birdie on hole 12, Reschly posted seven consecutive pars before birdieing his final two holes to card his lowest round of the weekend and match his lowest of the season.
Hare tied for 21st with a 73-71-70-214. He opened with a birdie on hole seven before playing his next three holes at even-par. Hare birdied hole 13 and followed with pars on holes 14-17, one and two. He added two more birdies over his final four holes.
Bellush tied for 29th with a 73-73-69-215. The senior opened 1-over on hole eight before recording birdies on holes 12, 15 and 17.
AJ Agnew tied for 44th at 73-71-75-219. He recorded birdies on holes seven, nine, 11, 12 and 13.
Brady Moore competed as an individual and tied for 61st with a 70-77-75-222.
As a team, the Mastodons carded rounds of 290, 283 and 277 for an 850 total, moving up one spot to finish fourth. Reigning Horizon League champion Wright State finished two strokes ahead of the ‘Dons, while the host Ball State squad (844) placed second and Butler (828) won the team title. Purdue Fort Wayne finished ahead of three Horizon League opponents: IU Indy, Northern Kentucky and Cleveland State.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Purdue Fort Wayne women’s soccer team came up short against Youngstown State 3-0 on Sunday (Sept. 27).
The Mastodons and Penguins played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes. Purdue Fort Wayne recorded three shots in the opening half, with Mary McArdle, Morgan Gallagher and Cyann Retzloff each recording a shot.
McArdle led the Mastodons with four shots, while Hailey Hoskins , Gallagher and Retzloff each recorded one.
Youngstown State broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute. The Penguins added goals in the 70th and 87th minutes to extend their lead to 3-0.

Freshman Tyler Samaan (Elgin, Ill. / Burlington) enjoyed his best day yet, leading the Valparaiso University men’s golf team in the opening round of the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin at the par-72, 7286-yard University Ridge course in Madison, Wis.
How It Happened
Samaan is in the top 10 in a 100-player field, as his opening-round score of 69 (-3) put him tied for ninth. He improved upon his previous career low of 70. After teeing off from Hole 1, Samaan went three under in the front nine with three birdies and six pars. He played even on the back nine, bogeying 18 to come back to -3.
Junior Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township) started the tournament with a 1-over 73, tied for 39th. He was a stroke under through a front nine that featured birdies on two of the first four holes, but doubled the 10th before playing even over the final eight holes of the day.
Redshirt senior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) is tied for 59th at 75 (+3).
Valpo is tied for 12th of 19 on the team leaderboard with a 293 (+5), while Green Bay leads the field at 278 (-10). Western Carolina’s Jace Butcher posted the tournament’s best round of the day with a 66.

“We were able to start the round pretty well, playing the first six holes at -2. We played the next six holes +5, but we didn’t take enough advantage of the Par-5 9th and 11th holes. We weren’t able to finish the final six holes of the round well, with three 3-putts in the last two holes. This golf course demands accuracy off the tee, and we struggled most of the day with hitting enough fairways, only hitting 55% of our fairways. Our approach shots into the greens were decent for us, especially when we were able to have the ball in good position off the tee. We hit 71% of our greens, which is terrific. We’re going to need to have better accuracy off the tee to produce more birdies for us in the next two rounds.”
“Tyler played very solid for us today. He hit 8 out of 13 fairways and 16 out of 18 greens in regulation. His Strokes Gained Approach was an impressive 4.65. Tyler had a clean scorecard through the first 11 holes, with four birdies and no bogeys. His only blemishes on the scorecard for the back nine were narrowly missing getting up-and-down from the front of the green on Hole 12 and a 3-putt on Hole 18. Other Round 1 highlights include Rob hitting 14/18 greens, Ryan hitting 15/18 greens and Elliot’s 29 putts.”

The remaining doubles wins were more lopsided, with Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) and Cathy Beckmann (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) coming up with a 6-2 victory over Jada Iverson/Amber Sharp and Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) needing just seven games to defeat Denver Johnson/Ruby Tseng 6-1.
Popa and Tanner had a glowing 2-0 day of doubles as they also picked up a 6-3 victory over Illinois State’s Emma Peretti/Vittoria Benedetti. The Redbirds won the other two matches including a 7-6(8) squeaker at No. 3.
Valpo split the top six singles matches against Butler and won three of seven singles matches against the Bulldogs overall. Four of the seven matches were decided on third-set tiebreaks. Beckmann continued a flawless start to her freshman season by dropping just two games against Laurel Slechter in her 6-1, 6-1 win.
Steven and Sienna Miles engaged in a tightly-contested match, with Steven rallying from a set down to pull out a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 win.
Delgado closed out a strong weekend by also coming from behind to win her match over Lauren Cook 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Two Beacons were on the wrong end of third-set breakers in a nip-and-tuck hidden dual.
Inside the Match
Popa and Tanner’s doubles win came over a tandem that included the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-MVC performer in Benedetti. They also beat Bradley’s top tandem including two players who won a combined four MVC Doubles Team of the Week awards last season.
Beckmann improved to 4-0 in singles in her career including a 3-0 weekend in this event.
Delgado also polished off a 3-0 weekend of singles action, improving to 22-6 in her Valpo career.
Valpo won nine singles matches over the weekend, three against each opponent (Butler, Bradley and Illinois State). The Beacons were victorious in six doubles matches.

The Beacons will head right back to Bloomington-Normal this coming weekend as Valpo competes in the Redbird Invitational starting on Friday, Oct. 2. Since the discontinuation of the MVC Individual Championships, the Redbird Invitational has operated as a de facto league individual championship each fall.

VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER
It was a roller-coaster ending to Homecoming and Family Weekend at Brown Field on Sunday afternoon, as after the Valpo soccer team surrendered a lead to visiting Indiana State with two minutes to play, Kiara Desiderio (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) stepped up 30 seconds later and converted a penalty kick for the match-winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the Beacons.
How It Happened
It was a scoreless first half, thanks in large part to the work in goal from Salange Bell (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy [Montclair State]) on quality efforts by the Sycamores. Bell went to ground twice to turn away Indiana State shots in the third and 24th minutes, and then pushed another strong attempt up and over the bar in the 39th minute.
As she has so often this year, Martha Goddard (London, England/Alleyns School) found the back of the net to open the scoring in the 63rd minute. The move started with Desiderio winning the ball in the midfield and sending a pass down the left flank for Julianna De Simone (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community). De Simone sent a cross from the left edge of the box in the air to the middle, where it was headed out by a Sycamore defender. But the clear only went as far as Goddard, who brought it down with her right foot and with her next touch ripped a right-footed shot from 13 yards out that rippled the right-side netting of the goal.
Bell made another big stop in the 74th minute, lunging to her left on a shot from the edge of the box and getting her fingertips enough on the shot to push it wide of the post.
Indiana State continued to press forward after the Beacons’ opening goal and was able to find the equalizer with two minutes remaining, as Meagyn Riffle hit a shot from the corner of the box that found the top-right corner. The goal was reviewed for a possible offside call on the Sycamores, but stood.
The Beacons pushed forward right from the kickoff after the Sycamores’ goal and their effort paid off almost immediately, as an ISU player was called for a handball in the box — a call which stood following video review. Desiderio took the ball, placed it on the spot and then dispatched a right-footed shot into the top-left corner to give Valpo the winning tally.
Inside the Match
The match-winning goal from Desiderio which gave the Beacons three points on the MVC table came with 1:29 remaining on the clock — Valpo’s latest match-winner since Kelsey Jahn scored with 27 seconds remaining in a win at Missouri State to open the 2017 Valley slate.
Desiderio has four goals in the last four matches and is now up to six goals on the season and 13 for her career. The latter mark is already just two shy of Valpo’s career top-10 chart, despite Desiderio being just past the halfway point of her sophomore year.
The winner was the first successful penalty kick of Desiderio’s collegiate career — she had one early-season effort last year against Eastern Illinois which was saved.
Goddard’s goal was her seventh of the season, already just one shy of the program single-season top-10 chart, and the 10th of her career. Like Desiderio, Goddard has four goals in the last four matches.

Bell was one shy of her season high as she made six saves, including a number of stellar stops.
Indiana State held a 17-14 advantage in shots and put seven shots on goal to Valpo’s six. The Sycamores also attempted seven corner kicks versus the Beacons’ two.
Valpo has scored in seven of its 11 matches this season, and in all seven of those matches the Beacons have tallied multiple goals. That is easily a program high, as previously, the 2006 side had four multi-goal games before finally having a one-goal game.
Sunday’s win snapped a brief two-match winning streak in the series by the Sycamores. Valpo owns a 15-5-2 advantage in the all-time series — the 15 wins are tied with Purdue Fort Wayne for the most wins over a single opponent in program history.
The Beacons improved to 3-0-0 this season against fellow Indiana-based programs.

“I’m really pleased with this group today, starting with getting a big three points in conference play. Our back line did a great job winning aerial duels in the defensive third, and there were periods in the first half where we had sustained time in the attacking third and created real pressure. The second half stretched out on both ends, which opened up chances for both teams, but that’s the nature of a Missouri Valley Conference game.”
“Martha’s goal to put us ahead was a big moment, and she was active in the attacking third all afternoon producing four shots, three on target, and the finish that mattered. Julianna DeSimone created this opportunity by winning the endline and getting a good left foot cross into the box. Martha was able to collect the ISU clearance and put it away. Winning games in the Valley is always a battle, and we knew we’d have to fight to the very end.”
“Giving up the equalizer that late was a difficult moment, but our response was exactly how this team has competed all year. We responded with What’s Important Now, that is get a solid service into the attacking third right at the kickoff, which Daisy Boardman executed perfectly. This allowed us to press in our attacking third. That pressure created the handball in the box, earning a penalty. Kiara buried it, and then the group saw it out. That’s how we move on to what’s important now, and this team did it in about thirty seconds.”

Valpo (5-5-1, 1-1-0 MVC) hits the road for the first time in nearly a month next weekend, as the Beacons play next Sunday, October 4 at Murray State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

UINDY MEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men’s soccer team picked up a draw in a 1-1 battle with the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats.
UIndy found a rare chance towards goal in the opening minutes off of a set piece taken by Alessandro Della Vecchia that was directed towards the head of Victor Mayrink, but ended just wide.
After the early chance the Greyhound offense slowed while handling short spurts of offense from the Bearcats in a game where possession was in Greyhound control for the majority.
Entering half, UIndy was the only team with a corner, but still in search of a shot on goal.
The second half remained very similar for the first 30 minutes with UIndy continuing to control possession, but struggling to find opportunities in and around the Southwest Baptist box.
That all changed when the 81st minute came around and the Greyhounds found the lead with an excellent header by Keaton Barnhizer off of a well-placed corner delivered by Storm Skandsen. The goal for Barnhizer was the first of his career and the assist for Skandsen was also the first of his career.
The Greyhounds remained on the attack after, continually pushing the ball down the field looking for the final goal to solidify the victory, but in the final minutes the Bearcats showed fight.
After multiple attempts around the UIndy box the Bearcats found their equalizer off an Olimpico that snuck past everyone on the field in the final seconds.
UIndy will return to action Wednesday when they return to Key Stadium at 2:30 p.m. to take on Maryville who is tied for first-place in the GLVC standings.

UINDY WOMEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women’s soccer team fell in at home against the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats 2-1.
The UIndy offense showed creation early, utilizing the midfield with threatening the Bearcat defense. Frannie Poulos, Emma Simpson and Emily DeWitt were among the early contributors to the UIndy offense, playing a major role in advancing the ball into the Bearcat half through the first 20 minutes.
The most dangerous opportunity early for UIndy came off the right foot of DeWitt as she nearly snuck a shot past the Southwest Baptist keeper, but the crossbar denied her attempt in the 13th minute.
Simpson tried to follow up the attempt with a shot of her own, but that was also stopped, this time by the Bearcat keeper.
The Greyhounds found consistent possession over the next few minutes before Southwest Baptist found a chance in the 24th minute that they converted.
For the remainder of the first half each side traded possession with neither team finding anything to challenge the opponent’s keeper.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half the Greyhounds conceded the second goal of the game, falling 2-0.
After the two-goal deficit developed UIndy picked up the intensity offensively and eventually found an equalizer off a precise strike from distance, courtesy of Nicole Schroeder for her first of the season.
The goal reenergized the Hounds, but due to costly offsides calls the Greyhounds ran out of time to find their equalizer.
The ladies will return to action Wednesday when they return home at 12 p.m. to take on Maryville.
