COMMANDERS QB MARCUS MARIOTA HAS A SPRAINED MCL IN HIS RIGHT KNEE
Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Sunday.
Mariota, 32, will miss the remainder of the preseason, but Quinn is “optimistic that he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season.”
Mariota was injured during Washington’s preseason opener against Miami on Friday night. Starter Jayden Daniels did not play against the Dolphins.
Quinn said the Commanders don’t plan on bringing in another quarterback at this time. The only other QBs on the roster are Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis.
“It will allow more reps over the next couple of weeks with Sam (Hartman) and Athan (Kaliakmanis) in that spot,” Quinn said.
Quinn said Mariota’s injury has impacted his thinking for how much Daniels and other starters will play for the remainder of the preseason, but he has yet to make any decisions. He plans to re-evaluate after two straight days of padded practice on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“I’ve got a bunch of situations that I’m trying to work through — two minutes, four minutes, some goal-line stuff,” Quinn said.
“This is our most heightened training camp block coming up, so I’m excited to see that. We haven’t gotten to the planning of the game yet.”
The Commanders’ next preseason game is on Saturday against the Lions before concluding the preseason on Friday, Aug. 28 against the Ravens.
Washington did receive promising news elsewhere on the injury front, as starting center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates are expected to return to practice on Tuesday. Cornerback Trey Amos remains out with an ankle injury, while running back Jeremy McNichols will miss a few weeks with a quad injury, according to Quinn.

LIONS WIDE RECEIVER GROUP LOOKS TO SHOW IT’S ONE OF THE LEAGUE’S BEST
ALLEN PARK, MI (AP) — There’s no doubt in Isaac TeSlaa’s mind where the Detroit Lions wide receiver group ranks among its peers.
“I think we’re the best in the league,” TeSlaa said.
The second-year wideout has good reason to feel that way. Amon-Ra St Brown is a two-time first-team All-Pro. Jameson Williams has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving the past two seasons. TeSlaa, a third-round draft pick in 2025, had six touchdowns receptions in his rookie season.
“Obviously, J-Mo and ‘Saint’ are proven veteran guys who’ve gone out there every single Sunday and made plays,” TeSlaa said. “I’ve been trying to make my name. The three of us together, it’s going to be hard to stop all of us.”
Given enough time in the pocket, quarterback Jared Goff will usually get the ball in their hands. Goff has averaged 32.5 touchdown passes over the past four seasons and thrown for at least 4,400 yards each season.
St. Brown has averaged 117 receptions over the past three seasons and has sparkled throughout training camp.
“It’s mind-blowing,” TeSlaa said of St. Brown. “Sometimes I’m just like, ‘That’s stupid. You should not be able to do that.’ He’s just incredibly talented and catches everything.”
Williams is one of the league’s best at stretching the defense. He’s averaged 17 yards per catch during his career.
“With his ability, man, the sky’s the limit,” coach Dan Campbell said. “And, that’s what you’re starting to see. That began to happen (last season) and it became much more consistent. And, then Goff, his confidence goes way up, and now he can let the ball loose a little bit sooner. And so, look, (Williams) is going to have a big year for us. All those skill guys are going to have a big year for us.”
Former Arizona receiver Greg Dortch was signed to a one-year contract this offseason to provide depth and will also be a factor as a returner. There’s fierce competition among the seven other receivers on the camp roster for an opening day roster spot.
“That room right now is interesting,” Campbell said.
Campbell ‘not surprised’ by Seahawks agreement with Arnold
The Lions released starting cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is facing eight felony charges, on June 29. Arnold still drew interest around the league before reaching an agreement this week with defending Super Bowl champion Seattle.
Campbell wasn’t surprised by the news.
“Every team is going to do their due diligence, just like we would if we were in their seat — Seattle or New York or whoever,” he said. “We would have done the same thing. ‘Let’s see if we can find out whatever we can.’ He’s a good kid, he’s got ability, you’ve seen him on tape. So no, I’m not surprised by that. I have no ill will whatsoever toward Terrion. I wish him the best. And I wish everything and everyone the best in that whole situation.”
Arnold, 23, is facing eight felony charges stemming from allegations he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men in February. He became a free agent in late June after the Lions released him a few days after the kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy charges were levied.
In June, prosecutors in Florida said Arnold arranged for the men to be pistol-whipped after he wrongly suspected them of stealing $100,000 in cash and luxury goods from him. Police called him the “primary conspirator” in the Feb. 4 attack, and a judge set his bail at $1 million.
Defense attorney R. Timothy Jansen said in Hillsborough County court earlier this summer that Arnold is “absolutely denying these allegations.” Denise White, the CEO of EAG Sports Management, an agency that represents Arnold, said there’s “no credible evidence” against him, only accounts from others who may have an incentive to get a lighter sentence.
“He’s a good dude,” Campbell said. “It’s unfortunate. The whole thing is unfortunate. It really is.”

REPORT: CARDINALS ROOKIE RB JEREMIYAH LOVE SIDELINED WITH ANKLE SPRAIN
Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is expected to miss the rest of the preseason with a high ankle sprain, ESPN reported on Sunday.
The Cardinals are hopeful that Love will be available for their regular-season opener at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 13, per the report.
After Arizona coach Mike LaFleur said following the Cardinals’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday that he didn’t expect Love to be sidelined for an extended time, he changed his tune Saturday, telling reporters that Love would be sidelined from practice this week.
The injury occurred in the second quarter in Arizona’s second preseason game. Love, the third overall pick in April’s draft, carried the ball 11 times for 58 yards against the Raiders before sustaining the injury. He didn’t play in the Hall of Fame game preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Love, 21, finished third in Heisman Trophy voting last season, when he ran for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns. He finished his Notre Dame career with 2,882 rushing yards, 594 receiving yards and 42 touchdowns (36 rushing, six receiving) over 41 games for the Fighting Irish.
With Love, James Connor (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) all dealing with injuries, Arizona signed running back Tre Stewart on Sunday.

COWBOYS SIGN 8-TIME PRO BOWL LB VON MILLER
Eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller is set to play his 15th NFL season back in his home state after signing with the Dallas Cowboys.
Miller confirmed the news (first reported by ESPN) on his Instagram account, posting a picture of himself in a Cowboys uniform with the caption, “Hereee Weee Gooo @dallascowboys LFG!!!”
The Cowboys later announced the signing. Terms were not disclosed.
Miller is a native of Texas who played collegiately at Texas A&M. He elected free agency in March after one season with the Washington Commanders. He’s now set to play for his third team in as many seasons.
The 37-year-old edge rusher ranks first among active players in career sacks (138.5), tied for ninth in NFL history. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft has had at least six sacks in all but two of his seasons and has earned eight All-Pro honors, but hasn’t done so or made a Pro Bowl since 2019.Sports news
The two-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl 50 MVP has also amassed 607 tackles, 271 quarterback hits, 177 tackles for loss, 27 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and two interceptions over 203 games (164 starts) for the Denver Broncos (2011-2021), Los Angeles Rams (2021), Buffalo Bills (2022-24) and Commanders.
He joins a Cowboys team looking to snap a two-year playoff drought and a defense that tied for 22nd in the NFL in sacks in 2025 (35) after shipping Micah Parsons off to Green Bay last August.

REPORTS: VIKINGS DEFENDER JAMAL ADAMS OUT FOR SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY
Minnesota Vikings defender Jamal Adams will miss the entire 2026 season due to a right knee injury sustained in the team’s first preseason game against the New York Giants on Saturday, according to reports by ESPN and NFL Network.
Adams, 30, appeared to sustain the injury during a touchdown play early in the second quarter, when Jaxson Dart connected with Malachi Fields for a 15-yard pass. Adams stumbled while defending receiver Calvin Austin III and stayed on the turf. Adams then entered the medical tent and a cart was brought to take him to the locker room for further evaluation.
While the Vikings haven’t yet commented on Adams’ status, Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell said after the preseason game that he was “crushed” for Adams and that the team would miss him.
Adams signed with the Vikings on July 27 as a linebacker, but he also has played safety since joining the team.
A former first-round pick (sixth overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft, Adams made the Pro Bowl in three consecutive seasons from 2018-20, earning a first-team All-Pro honor in 2019.
He’s made 546 tackles, 55 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks, four interceptions, eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 102 games (87 starts) for the New York Jets (2017-19), Seattle Seahawks (2020-23), Tennessee Titans (2024), Detroit Lions (2024) and Las Vegas Raiders (2025)
After injuries limited him to 15 total games over the 2022-24 seasons, Adams played 17 games (four starts) last season for the Raiders.

SEVEN MONTHS AFTER KNEE INJURY, BEARS ACTIVATE OT OZZY TRAPILO
The Chicago Bears have taken tackle Ozzy Trapilo off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, clearing Trapilo to return to practice on Sunday, just seven months after he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon.
The knee injury — which was expected to sideline Trapilo for some if not all of the 2026 NFL season — was sustained in the Bears’ 31-27 wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers in January.
A six-game starter who appeared in 14 games overall as a rookie out of Boston College, Trapilo came on late in the season before sustaining the injury.
Earlier this offseason, the Bears’ front office had expressed doubt over the young player’s availability at all in 2026. Instead, his activation shows a recovery ahead of schedule and could allow Trapilo to work his way back over the course of the rest of training camp.Football news
The Bears have yet to settle on a starting option at left tackle. Braxton Jones might be the current favorite for the role, though he is dealing with his own knee issues, suffered two weeks ago.
Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills platooned at the spot in the Bears’ preseason opener vs. the Cleveland Browns, with neither standing out.
