NFL DRAFT ROUND 2: OHIO STATE DT KAYDEN MCDONALD LANDS WITH TEXANS

Defensive tackle Kayden McDonald was in Pittsburgh for the NFL draft on Thursday night, and the defensive tackle watched 15 of his peers make the walk from the backstage green room to the stage to be announced as first-round selections.

The only player left in that room when the 32-player round ended was McDonald.

McDonald returned to the scene Friday night, and he didn’t have to wait long. He heard his name called early in the second round when the Houston Texans chose him with the 36th overall pick, the fourth made on Friday.

The Ohio State product who was a consensus All-American last season had tears flowing during the entire walk toward the stage. He stopped for a second to tap the Texans display on the wall.

When he got to the stage, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and McDonald conducted a long embrace, and Goodell was doing a lot of talking.

In essence, the long wait was over for McDonald, who was one of seven Buckeyes drafted in the first two rounds.

“This is emotional,” McDowell said on the ESPN broadcast. “I know I’m supposed to be here. I’m just so blessed and thankful.”

The Texans traded with the Las Vegas Raiders to move up two spots on a night in which the second and third rounds were held. When the Raiders chose at No. 38, they tabbed safety Treydan Stukes of Arizona.

The second round had a heavy defensive flavor with 22 players on that side of the ball being selected.

There was also was an impact trade announced as the Minnesota Vikings sent veteran linebacker Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a third-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-rounder in 2027. The Eagles also received a seventh-rounder this year in the deal.

The San Francisco 49ers started off the festivities by selecting receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, who played for Ole Miss last season after spending two seasons apiece at Washington State (2021-22) and Oklahoma State (2023-24).

Two other wideouts went in the second round — Denzel Boston of Washington to the Cleveland Browns at No. 39 and Germie Bernard of Alabama to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 47.

Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood went 37th overall to the New York Giants. He was another player thought to be a possible first-rounder.

“Of course it was disappointing,” Hood said. “I know God does everything for a reason. He was probably preventing me from something or he had something better in store for me, and that being the Giants.

“I’m super excited to go into this next chapter of my life and will just go in there and give my best and give my all and be the best version of myself.”

Hood also played for Auburn (2023) and Colorado (2024) during his college career.

The Miami Dolphins appear to have made one of the best picks in the round by grabbing Texas Tech consensus All-America linebacker Jacob Rodriguez with the No. 43 pick.

Rodriguez was the face of the Red Raiders’ stunning season last year and loaded up on postseason awards, including the Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defender. He led the nation with seven forced fumbles and also intercepted four passes.

At No. 48, the Falcons tabbed Clemson cornerback Avieon Terrell, the younger brother of Atlanta’s A.J. Terrell, who is entering his seventh season as a starting corner for the Falcons.

The New York Jets chose cornerback D’Angelo Ponds of national champion Indiana with the 50th overall pick. The 5-foot-8 Ponds played his first season (2023) at James Madison before following coach Curt Cignetti to Indiana and becoming one of the Hoosiers’ top defensive players.

In the first round, four Buckeyes were selected: receiver Carnell Tate, (No. 4, Tennessee Titans); linebacker Arvell Reese (No. 5, Giants); linebacker Sonny Styles (No. 7, Washington Commanders) and safety Caleb Downs (No. 11, Dallas Cowboys).

After McDonald went in the second, tight end Max Klare (No. 61, Los Angeles Rams) and cornerback Davison Igbinosun (No. 62, Buffalo Bills) went back-to-back near the end of the round.

The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks took TCU safety Bud Clark with the 64th and final pick of the second round.

2026 NFL DRAFT: BEST AVAILABLE ON DAY 3

On Saturday, we enter into the longest day of the draft, the marathon third day of the proceedings, comprising of rounds 4-7. Many gems have been discovered from this period, including franchise quarterbacks like Tom Brady, game-changing wideouts like Amon-Ra St. Brown, and crazy physical specimens like Tariq Woolen. Here are some of the players who could fit that bill in this draft class.

Zxavian Harris, DT, Ole Miss — Likely to still be on the board because of his character concerns, Harris certainly plays like someone who could have gone Day 2. With his hulking size (the rare defensive tackle who measures in over 6-foot-7 on a good day) and his impressive pass-rush numbers, a team that’s willing to take the chance on the persona could find themselves with a cornerstone defensive player.

Kyle Louis, S/LB, Pittsburgh — Perhaps Louis’ positional versatility is causing him to drop further than one would expect. Ever since the Isaiah Simmons days, teams seem more and more thrown off by guys who don’t have an immediate fit on their defense. They’re limiting themselves when it comes to Louis, though. His instincts and quick ability to turn toward the ball and pick up cleanup tackles is unmatched. It’s hard to get guys with true starter upside in Day 3.

Mike Washington Jr., RB, Arkansas — Washington’s athleticism is some of the craziest in the class. When you’re 6-foot-1 and carrying over 230 pounds of weight behind you, it’s just not natural to run as fast as Washington does. Though he lacks third-down upside, with development and training, Washington has all the tools to develop into a top-tier starting running back if he’s given patience. Just don’t ask Washington to do too much receiving work too early… or blocking. Just hand the ball off to him; don’t overthink it.

Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee — Something must be very wrong with McCoy’s knee if he’s still on the board this late in the game. There have been rumors of bone spurs and multiple surgeries floating around and it’s all very much in flux. At his best, McCoy could have been the top cornerback in the class, but his bill of health just isn’t clean. At some point, he has to come off the board, but there must be something we don’t know about that has teams playing scared.

Jalon Kilgore, S, South Carolina — Kilgore was a former top 50 projected player who could slot in perfectly as a nickel back for a team that needs it. The problem is, the nickel cornerback situations around the league are pretty much sorted right now. This means that teams drafting for best player available might have to keep their eye on guys like Kilgore, who are alignment specific, to pick up value. His coverage skills are hard to find this late.

JONATHAN GREENARD, DEALT FROM VIKINGS TO EAGLES, GETS $100M EXTENSION

Pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, dealt by the Minnesota Vikings to Philadelphia on Friday, agreed to a big-money extension with the Eagles, multiple media outlets reported.

The Eagles received Greenard and a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft in exchange for a third-round pick on Friday (No. 98 overall) and a third-rounder in 2027.

Greenard then reportedly landed a four-year, $100 million extension from the Eagles, including $50 million in guaranteed money.

The 28-year-old University of Florida product is coming off a down season in which he managed just three sacks while playing 12 games (10 starts) for the Vikings.

In 2024, Greenard logged 12 sacks and four forced fumbles in 17 starts for Minnesota en route to earning Pro Bowl recognition. The year before that, with the Houston Texans, he registered a career-high 12.5 sacks in 15 games, all starts.

Houston selected Greenard in the third round of the 2020 draft. In 77 NFL games (59 starts), he has 38 sacks, one interception, 14 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Last season, the Eagles finished in the middle of the NFL with 42 sacks, led by Jalyx Hunt with 6.5 and Moro Ojomo with six.

COWBOYS ACQUIRE 49ERS STARTING LB DEE WINTERS FOR 5TH-ROUND PICK

The Dallas Cowboys continued to bolster their defense on Friday, trading a fifth-round draft pick for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dee Winters.

Winters, 25, started all 17 regular-season games last season and had team-high 101 tackles as well as eight tackles for loss, five passes defended and one interception which he returned 74 yards for a touchdown.

A native of Brenham, Texas, Winters has 155 career tackles, eight tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 10 passes defended and the one interception in 47 regular-season games (27 starts). Winters also has played in four playoff games (one start) and has 10 tackles.

San Francisco selected Winters in the sixth round of the 2023 draft out of TCU.

The 49ers now have the 152nd overall pick that belonged to the Cowboys, who went defense in the first round on Thursday by selecting Ohio State safety Caleb Downs (11th overall) and UCF pass rusher Malachi Lawrence (23rd). Dallas did not have a second-round pick.

The Cowboys traded defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to the 49ers for a third-round pick (92nd overall) on March 11.

COWBOYS, RAVENS SQUARE OFF FOR NFL’S FIRST GAME IN RIO IN SEPTEMBER

The Dallas Cowboys will play the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL’s first game in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the league announced on Friday.

The Cowboys had been announced in early February for the game but not the opponent nor the date, which is Sunday, Sept. 27, at 4:25 p.m. ET at Maracana Stadium. The game will be carried on CBS and Paramount+ as well as the NFL+ app.

The 78,000-seat Maracana Stadium has hosted World Cup matches and the 2016 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. The league previously announced Rio as one of its new international markets; at least three regular-season games will be played there in the next five years.

Games

“The international expansion of our great game has been remarkable,” Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said in a press release. “South America is home to some of the world’s most passionate  sports fans, including our Ravens Flock in Brazil. We look forward to playing in the iconic Maracana Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys, as our league continues to engage with fans across the globe.”

The NFL came to Brazil for the first time in 2024, and its Sao Paulo games in 2025 and 2026 were played on Friday of Week 1. The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo in 2024 and the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Kansas City Chiefs there this past year at Corinthians Arena.

The league said in Friday’s release that there are more than 36 million NFL fans in Brazil.

“Playing in the legendary Maracana Stadium against the Ravens in front of such a passionate and growing fan base on a global stage will be very special for our team, our entire Cowboys organization and the millions watching back home and around the world,” Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones said in the press release.

The NFL has scheduled a record nine international games for 2026 across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums. The cities are London, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Munich, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

The San Francisco 49ers will play the Los Angeles Rams at Melbourne Cricket Ground for the NFL’s first game in Australia, but other matchups have not been announced. The 49ers also will play a regular-season game at Mexico City’s Estadio Banorte.

The NFL will play its first regular-season game in Paris this fall with the New Orleans Saints as one of the participants at Stade de France Stadium. The Atlanta Falcons are ticketed for a regular-season game in Madrid, Spain, at Bernabeu Stadium, while the Detroit Lions will play at FC Bayern Munich Stadium in Germany.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be designated as the home team for two games in London this year. The games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley Stadium will be played in consecutive weeks in October. A second game overseas was added to the Jaguars’ schedule due to the ongoing renovations at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.

The league also previously announced that the Washington Commanders will serve as the host team for a game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

PACKERS EXTEND WR JAYDEN REED’S CONTRACT FOR REPORTED 3 YEARS, $50.25M

The Green Bay Packers announced the signing of wide receiver Jayden Reed to a contract extension on Friday, with ESPN reporting the deal is for three years and worth $50.25 million.

Reed, who was entering the final year of his rookie contract, will be signed through 2029. The deal includes $20 million guaranteed, Reed’s agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ian Grutman told ESPN.

Reed, who turns 26 on Tuesday, is coming off of an abbreviated season marred by shoulder and foot injuries that both required surgery in Week 3.

He finished with 19 receptions on 22 targets for 207 yards and one touchdown in seven regular-season games (three starts). He also started the NFC wild-card playoff loss to the Chicago Bears and made four catches for 43 yards and a TD.

Reed has 138 receptions on 191 targets for 1,857 yards, 15 touchdowns and 13.5 yards per catch in 40 regular-season games (26 starts). He has another 12 catches for 124 yards and one TD in four playoff games (three starts).

Green Bay selected Reed in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He led the team in receiving in each of his first two seasons.

The Packers have overhauled their receiving corps, allowing Romeo Doubs to leave as a free agent for the New England Patriots and a four-year, $68 million contract in March. In early April, they traded wideout Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2026 fifth-round draft pick and 2027 sixth-rounder.

Green Bay still has receivers Christian Watson, 26, and Matthew Golden, 22, the latter a first-round pick in 2025.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

KANSAS FRESHMAN DARRYN PETERSON DECLARES FOR THE NBA DRAFT AND IS PROJECTED AS A TOP-3 PICK

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson declared for the NBA draft on Friday, just as nearly everyone had expected he would ever since his arrival on campus, and the high-scoring guard figures to be among the first three players selected in June.

The 6-foot-6 Peterson showed flashes of brilliance with the Jayhawks, but he also caused a lot of headaches for the team. He dealt with a severe full-body cramping issue that required hospitalization before the season, and additional injuries and illnesses caused him to miss 11 games, hurting his ability to build any continuity with the rest of his teammates.

Peterson wound up averaging 20.2 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 38.2% from beyond the arc in 24 games.

He started to hit his rhythm in the postseason, scoring 24 points against TCU and 14 against Houston in the Big 12 Tournament. He had 28 points in a first-round NCAA tourney win over Cal Baptist and 21 in a last-second loss to St. John’s in the second round.

“To my teammates, friends and everyone at the University of Kansas, a heartfelt thank you!” Peterson posted to social media Friday. “Your belief in me, your encouragement and your constant support have been invaluable every step of the way. This journey has been everything to me, and none of it would have been possible without your love, support and sacrifices.”

Most mock drafts have Peterson or BYU’s A.J. Dybantsa going first overall, though Duke’s Cameron Boozer also could be in the mix.

The closest comp to Peterson has generally been 6-foot-5 Devin Booker, the Phoenix Suns’ five-time All-Star. Both have the ability to score at all three levels, and their athleticism allows them to play much bigger than their size.

Peterson’s announcement came one day after Dybantsa declared for the draft in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts.

Dybantsa led the nation with 25.5 points per game, while also pulling down 6.8 rebounds with 3.7 assists. He’s the first player to post those averaged in a season and be a consensus All-American since Larry Bird did it in 1978-79 for Indiana State.

Arizona freshman Koa Peat, another projected first-round pick, declared for the draft on his Instagram account on Friday.

“Playing for the University of Arizona has been an incredible blessing and something I’ll always be grateful for,” he posted. “Wearing this name and where I come from means everything to me. It’s been an honor to compete at this level while still being rooted in the place that raised me.”

The 6-8 Peat, an Arizona native, averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in 36 games while helping the Wildcats reach the Final Four for the first time since 2001.

Tennessee freshman Nate Ament also declared for the draft Thursday after starting all 35 games he played and averaging 16.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. His announcement came in an Instagram post in which he thanked the Volunteers for the opportunity.

“I promise to always represent the Vols with the upmost pride,” Ament wrote. “This University means more to me than just basketball — to me it’s a place I call home. I might’ve only been here a year but I’ll remember this year for the rest of my life.”

Another top draft prospect, Darius Acuff Jr. of Arkansas, declared for the draft on Wednesday. He joined LSU legend Pete Maravich as the only SEC players to have led the league in scoring (23.5 points per game) and assists (6.4 per game) in the same season.

Ament and Acuff also are widely considered to be top-10 draft picks.

ARIZONA F KOA PEAT TO PURSUE DREAM, DECLARES FOR NBA DRAFT

Arizona forward Koa Peat announced on Instagram Friday that he has declared for the 2026 NBA Draft.

“Playing in the NBA has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid,” Peat wrote. “With that being said, after a lot of thought and conversations with the people closest to me, I’m excited to announce that I will be declaring for the 2026 NBA Draft.”

Peat, who is projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick, averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while playing in 36 games (all starts) during his freshman season in 2025-26.

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Peat made 52.8% of his shots from the floor and 35.0% from 3-point range to propel the Wildcats to the Final Four.

REPORT: NORTH CAROLINA C HENRI VEESAAR TO ENTER NBA DRAFT

North Carolina center Henri Veesaar is entering the NBA Draft, CBS sports reported on Friday.

The Raleigh News & Observer reported that Veesaar informed new head coach Michael Malone and his staff on Thursday evening that he would not return for his senior season.

Veesaar, who is projected to be a late first-round pick, averaged 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 42.6% from 3-point range in 31 games (all starts) last season.

The 7-footer from Estonia was a Second Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection.

Veesaar came to North Carolina after spending two seasons at Arizona, averaging 6.3 points in 66 games (five starts).

CINCINNATI BIG MAN MOUSTAPHA THIAM TRANSFERS TO MICHIGAN

Former Cincinnati center Moustapha Thiam told ESPN on Friday that he has committed to play for national champion Michigan.

Thiam, who is listed at 7-foot-2 and 250 pounds, has two seasons of eligibility remaining and is expected to aid in the Wolverines’ revamped frontcourt.

The Senegal native joins fellow transfers J.P. Estrella (Tennessee) and Jalen Reed (LSU) in joining a Michigan squad that is expected to lose projected first-round NBA draft picks Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr.

Thiam averaged 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 31 games (all starts) last season for the Bearcats. He shot 52.5% from the field and 28.8% from beyond the arc.

Thiam transferred to Cincinnati from UCF, where he started 34 games in 2024-25. He averaged 10.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks with the Knights.

REPORT: EX-STANFORD C OSKAR GILTAY TRANSFERRING TO UCONN

Former Stanford center Oskar Giltay committed to UConn on Friday, according to the 247Sports transfer portal tracker.

UConn coach Dan Hurley needed to find two big men in the portal to replace Tarris Reed Jr., who is out of eligibility, and freshman Eric Reibe. A reliable backup to Reed, Reibe is transferring to Southern California.

Najai Hines, a transfer from Seton Hall, is expected to start at center with Giltay, a native of Belgium, as his understudy.

As a freshman at Stanford in 2025-26, the 6-foot-10 Giltay averaged 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks over 14.6 minutes per game. 247Sports rated him as a four-star prospect in the portal.Games

Giltay is known for his defensive prowess but averaged 10 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.1 blocks for the Belgian national team in the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket tournament.

UConn previously added 6-foot-8 forward Nikolas Khamenia from Duke in the portal. He is expected to take over for Alex Karaban.

The Huskies will continue their quest for a seventh national title, and the third under Hurley, in 2026-27. They return point guard Silas Demary Jr. and shooting guard Braylon Mullins, who decided to put off the NBA draft for at least a year to return to Storrs, Conn. Guard Solo Ball will miss the entire 2026-27 season due to a wrist injury that requires surgery.College Athlete Profiles

Michigan defeated UConn 69-63 in the national championship game earlier this month.

NBA ROUNDUP: LAKERS RALLY FOR OT WIN, 3-0 LEAD ON ROCKETS

LeBron James and Marcus Smart recorded double-doubles as the Los Angeles Lakers took a stranglehold on their first-round playoff series against the host Houston Rockets with a 112-108 overtime victory in Game 3 on Friday.

After James (29 points, 13 rebounds) forced OT with a 3-pointer, Smart scored eight of his 21 points in the extra period to put the Lakers up 3-0 in the Western Conference series.

Smart added a team-high 10 assists while Rui Hachimura put up 22 points for the Lakers, who will look for a sweep of the best-of-seven set on Sunday at Houston.

The Rockets were without leading scorer Kevin Durant for the second time in the series. Durant, who missed Game 1 with a knee contusion, was a late scratch due to a left ankle sprain sustained in the fourth quarter of Game 2. Alperen Sengun paced the Rockets with 33 points and 16 rebounds while Amen Thompson chipped in 26 points and 11 assists.

Spurs 120, Trail Blazers 108

Stephon Castle hit for 33 points and rookie reserve Dylan Harper added career bests of 27 points and 10 boards as visiting San Antonio roared back to beat Portland in Game 3 of a first-round Western Conference playoff series.

San Antonio erased a 15-point third-quarter deficit and took a 2-1 lead in the series. The Spurs won with Victor Wembanyama on the bench after the star was ruled out before the game because of concussion protocol. De’Aaron Fox added 18 points, with Luke Kornet racking up 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Jrue Holiday finished with 29 points to lead Portland. Scoot Henderson added 21 points, and Deni Avdija produced 19 points and nine assists.

Celtics 108, 76ers 100

Jayson Tatum scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as visiting Boston defeated Philadelphia in Game 3 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Jaylen Brown matched Tatum with 25 points, while Payton Pritchard added 15 points for the Celtics, who lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Tyrese Maxey scored 31 points on 12-of-31 shooting for the Sixers. Paul George (18 points) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (17) also made key contributions, but VJ Edgecombe pitched in just 10 points on 5-of-17 shooting, 0-of-7 from long range.

NHL ROUNDUP: OT WIN GIVES HABS 2-1 EDGE ON LIGHTNING

Lane Hutson scored 2:09 into overtime and the host Montreal Canadiens took Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Friday, moving ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven set.

While Hutson scored the game-winner, it was Montreal’s fourth line that lifted the Habs to victory. Kirby Dach and Alexandre Texier both had a goal and an assist, and Zack Bolduc had two helpers.

Jakub Dobes made 15 saves for the Canadiens in the third straight game of the series to require overtime.

Brandon Hagel and Brayden Point scored for the Lightning, with Jake Guentzel and Nikita Kucherov generating assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 26 shots.

Mammoth 4, Golden Knights 2

Lawson Crouse scored a pair of second-period goals as Utah doubled up Vegas in Salt Lake City to take a 2-1 lead in a Western Conference quarterfinal series.

MacKenzie Weegar scored and added an assist and Dylan Guenther also tallied for the Mammoth, who became the sixth franchise that has debuted since the 1990s or later to win its first-ever home Stanley Cup playoff game.

Utah’s Clayton Keller chipped in a pair of helpers and Karel Vejmelka made 30 saves. Jack Eichel and Nic Dowd scored for the Golden Knights, while Carter Hart made eight saves.

Mikael Granlund tallied once in a four-point performance, while Mason McTavish, Alex Killorn, Jeffrey Viel and Jackson Lacombe added a goal apiece for Anaheim. Carlsson and Lacombe each notched an assist, and Lukas Dostal made 20 saves.

Connor McDavid collected one goal and one assist while Vasily Podkolzin, Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each scored once for the Oilers. Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard posted two assists apiece, and Connor Ingram stopped 32 shots.

MLB ROUNDUP: CUBS OVERTAKE DODGERS LATE FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN

Dansby Swanson hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth as the visiting Chicago Cubs rallied for a 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

The Cubs won their 10th straight game as they came back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring all their runs over the final three innings.

Swanson was 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, homer and four RBIs. Alex Bregman was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and Moises Ballesteros had two hits and a run.

Pete Crow-Armstrong led off the ninth with a single and was plated on Swanson’s homer off Tanner Scott (0-1).

Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan kept the Cubs at bay as he yielded one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Yankees 12, Astros 4

Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and drove in four and visiting New York ran its winning streak to seven by taking control early in its victory over Houston.

The Yankees lost Giancarlo Stanton to tightness in his lower right leg in the sixth. Will Warren (3-0) allowed two hits on seven hits in six innings. Chisholm had his first three-hit game of the season and third multi-hit game in four games after not getting a multi-hit game in his first 21 games. Ryan McMahon, Ben Rice and Jose Caballero also hit solo homers.

Yainer Diaz homered and had an RBI single for the Astros, who lost for the 14th time in 18 games.

Orioles 10, Red Sox 3

Adley Rutschman hit the first of his two two-run homers in Baltimore’s three-homer first inning and the Orioles went on to rip visiting Boston.

Rutschman, who has three home runs in two games since being activated from the injury list earlier this week, finished with six RBIs. The Orioles blasted six home runs — four of them solo blasts. Gunnar Henderson began the homer parade, and Rutschman and Dylan Beavers joined him with long balls in the inning. Samuel Basallo and Coby Mayo later went deep.

Wilyer Abreu hit a homer for Boston in the second inning, and he, Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story each finished with two of their team’s 10 hits. The Red Sox have lost four games in a row.

Marlins 9, Giants 4

Liam Hicks and Connor Norby smacked home runs and Kyle Stowers, Xavier Edwards and Otto Lopez collected three hits apiece as Miami opened a six-game California swing with a romp over San Francisco.

Benefitting from a season-high-tying 16 hits of support, Sandy Alcantara (3-2) snapped a three-game personal winless streak with six comfortable innings, helping the Marlins win for the fourth time in their last five games.

Luis Arraez and Jung Hoo Lee had three hits apiece for the Giants, who tallied 11 hits but lost their second straight.

Guardians 8, Blue Jays 6

Angel Martinez launched a pair of two-run home runs and visiting Cleveland held on to defeat Toronto.

Daniel Schneemann had a solo shot for the Guardians in the opener of a three-game series. Gavin Williams (4-1) allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings.

Jesus Sanchez and Kazuma Okamoto homered for the Blue Jays.

Rockies 4, Mets 3

Michael Lorenzen tossed a season-high seven innings and earned the win for visiting Colorado, which beat New York in the opener of a three-game series.

Jake McCarthy laced the tiebreaking RBI double in the sixth while Troy Johnston had what proved to be the decisive two-run single an inning later for the Rockies. TJ Rumfield hit a run-scoring groundout in the fifth while Ezequiel Tovar finished with two hits.

Marcus Semien hit into a run-scoring double play in the second and Brett Baty delivered a two-run single in the eighth for the Mets, who had won two straight following a 12-game losing streak.

Pirates 6, Brewers 0

Paul Skenes took a perfect game bid into the seventh inning and Konnor Griffin celebrated his 20th birthday with his first career homer to pace visiting Pittsburgh over Milwaukee in the opener of the three-game series.

Skenes (4-1) retired the first 20 hitters before Jake Bauers lined a 3-2 pitch for a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh for the Brewers’ only hit. The Pirates, who played their first game in 1882, have yet to throw a perfect game. Their last no-hitter came in 1997.

Skenes, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, struck out seven without a walk in a dominant 93-pitch outing. Mason Montgomery followed with a perfect eighth and Isaac Mattson preserved the one-hitter despite a two-out walk in the ninth.

Rays 6, Twins 2

Junior Caminero hit a pair of tape-measure home runs and drove in three runs and Jonathan Aranda also homered twice to lead Tampa Bay to a victory over visiting Minnesota.

It was the fifth career multi-homer game for Caminero, who has hit six home runs during a nine-game hitting streak. Drew Rasmussen (2-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits over six innings.

Brooks Lee homered and doubled in a 3-for-4 game and Royce Lewis also homered for Minnesota, which took its seventh loss in the last eight games.

Braves 5, Phillies 3

Michael Harris II delivered a pinch-hit double to drive in two runs and help Atlanta rally for a win and hand visiting Philadelphia its 10th straight loss.

The losing streak is the longest for Philadelphia since it dropped 11 in a row in 1999. The Braves have won all four games against the Phillies and have won nine of their last 10 games. Ronald Acuna crushed a two-run homer to pull Atlanta even in the fifth.

Trea Turner hit a solo shot and Bryce Harper smashed a two-run blast to put the Phillies up 3-2 in the sixth. For Harper, it was the 800th extra-base hit of his career as he became only the 27th player, and 10th left-handed hitter, to reach that milestone prior to his 34th birthday.

Mariners 3, Cardinals 2

Josh Naylor hit a tiebreaking home run and George Kirby won his third straight start as Seattle defeated host St. Louis in an interleague matchup.

Naylor’s leadoff homer to right-center field in the sixth was the difference. The Mariners snapped a streak of eight consecutive road defeats.

Kirby (4-2) allowed two runs on five hits over six-plus innings. Andre Pallante (2-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. The right-hander fanned a season-high eight, one shy of his career best.

White Sox 5, Nationals 4

Sam Antonacci delivered a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and Munetaka Murakami homered as host Chicago edged Washington.

Seranthony Dominguez worked around a Luis Garcia Jr. double in the ninth for his sixth save, sending the Nationals to their third straight loss.

Garcia had two hits for the Nationals, while Miguel Vargas had a pair of hits for the White Sox, who have won four of their last five.

Royals 5, Angels 3

Veteran Mike Trout set a franchise record for most career games played at any one position with his 1,367th appearance in center field, but Los Angeles fell to host Kansas City in the opener of their three-game series.

The Royals scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi (0-3), who allowed five runs on five hits in five innings.

The Angels rallied for three runs in the seventh against left-hander Noah Cameron, who had a shutout going for six innings. Cameron (2-1) got the win with three runs allowed on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Athletics 8, Rangers 1

Nick Kurtz, Carlos Cortes and Tyler Soderstrom each hit solo homers in the first inning as the Athletics opened a three-game series against Texas with a victory in Arlington.

Cortes also hit a three-run homer and Zack Gelof slugged a two-run shot among his two hits for the Athletics, who have won three of their last four games. Kurtz also singled, walked and scored two runs. Luis Severino (1-2) allowed one run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Josh Jung doubled in a run and Corey Seager and Josh Smith had two hits apiece for Texas. Nathan Eovaldi (2-4) gave up six runs on six hits over six innings.

Reds 9, Tigers 8

Nathaniel Lowe belted a two-run walk-off home run, lifting Cincinnati to a victory over Detroit.

After Detroit closer Kenley Jansen (0-1) recorded two quick outs in the ninth, Spencer Steer singled. Lowe then connected on his second homer of the game and the season. Matt McLain also homered twice for Cincinnati, which overcame a 5-0 deficit.

Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter homered in the eighth to give Detroit an 8-7 lead. The Tigers had won 10 of their past 13 entering the Friday contest, which was the opener of a three-game interleague series. Javier Baez and Riley Greene also went deep for the visitors.

GOLF

NELLY KORDA POSTS ANOTHER 65, BUILDS MAJOR LEAD AT CHEVRON

Nelly Korda picked up where she left off and shot her second consecutive round of 65 to build a commanding six-shot lead at the Chevron Championship on Friday in Houston.

The World No. 2 is well set up to vie for her third career major title and her first since winning this event at a different course in 2024.

Korda carded five of her eight birdies Friday on the back nine at Memorial Park Golf Course, including Nos. 17 and 18, to reach 14-under 130 for the championship. Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit, who shot a bogey-free 69, is a distant second at 8 under.

Amateur Farah O’Keefe also posted a bogey-free 69 to move to 7 under, tied for third with Ryann O’Toole and South Korea’s Ina Yoon, both of whom had 68.

“I just feel really good,” Korda said. “I mean, I’m just hitting it in the spots that I want to, missing it into the spots that I want to. The communication between (caddie Jason McDede) and I is really good where if there is a tucked pin and it’s kind of stupid, I would rather give myself a longer lag putt and give myself the best opportunity for par. That’s kind of the way we been playing the past two days, not taking kind of stupid risks.”

Korda is so far building on a tremendous start to her season. She won the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions and logged three straight second-place finishes after that.

“It feels very good,” Korda said of her run of success, “but you know that it’s golf so you just try to enjoy it as much as possible because you’re going to get bad breaks, hit bad shots. … So you just kind of try to soak it up as much as possible.”

Tavatanakit, the winner of this major in 2021 when it was named the ANA Inspiration, went out in the afternoon and managed three birdies.

“Chasing, leading, whatever, I feel like I’m just glad I have this opportunity to be in the mix,” she said. “I don’t know. I don’t know if this is good or bad. Like I just want to go out there the next two days and just do my best and accept whatever comes and just play really freely.”

O’Keefe, a native of nearby Austin and a member of the University of Texas golf team, is making the most of her sponsor invitation into the major. While more experienced pros struggled around her, O’Keefe made all pars on the front nine before holing birdies at Nos. 11, 14 and 18.

She’s the first amateur in tournament history to open with two straight rounds in the 60s.

“I think I am going to just stay happy,” O’Keefe said. “I had a really good caddie in Scotland and he just kept saying, ‘Happy days.’ Every time we end up in a bunker, ‘Happy days. We’re good.’ I think that positivity — if you beat down on yourself, really if you’re negative in any way it hurts you. So I’m just grateful to be here and happy to be representing what I get to represent. I get to represent Texas, the University of Texas, my family.”

O’Toole is a surprise name to see near the top of the leaderboard, as a 39-year-old ranked 219th in the world with one career LPGA victory. She has never had a top-10 finish in 11 prior starts at this event.

O’Toole has her mind on her brother, who was in an offroad vehicle accident in January and spent a month in the ICU.

“I was up at 5 a.m., 6 a.m. working out and to the hospital by 7:30, 8 a.m., at the hospital all day, and would be relieved in the afternoon to go practice kind of thing,” O’Toole said.

“… I don’t know, like you never know when your last event is going to be or whatever. I’m just happy to be here. On top of going to Q-School last year, that was kind of a kick in the butt. I went just saying, ‘Look, if I make it, great. Then I have control of my future. If I don’t, I’m going to start the next chapter.’”

Yan Liu of China (70) is alone in sixth at 6 under and Megan Khang (67), Thailand’s Jasmine Suwannapura (67), Sweden’s Maja Stark (70) and France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (71) are tied at 5 under.

The cut line landed at 2 over par, and the most notable name to miss the weekend was World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand. She bogeyed two of her last five holes with one birdie and missed the weekend by one stroke as she continues to seek her first career major.

Rose Zhang, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and South Korea’s Jin Young Ko also wound up at 3 over.

Two-time major champ Stacy Lewis, 41, posted 79-77 (12 over) in the final event of her LPGA career.

“I was around some older players when they retired and I saw this just happiness in them,” Lewis said. “They weren’t sad anymore. They didn’t miss it.

“I got to that point early last year where I was just — didn’t want to practice as much and I was just thinking about the end. It made me excited instead of sad.”

ZACH JOHNSON TAKES MITSUBISHI LEAD AMID MODIFIED STABLEFORD RULES

Zach Johnson birdied the par-5 18th hole to grab a one-point lead at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic after Friday’s first round at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga.

For the first time, the Mitsubishi Electric Classic is using the Modified Stableford scoring system to encourage aggressive play. Rather than scoring relative to par, points are awarded per hole — minus-1 for a bogey, zero for par and two for birdie. Eagles are worth five points while double bogeys are minus-3.

It is the first time since 2002 that the PGA Tour Champions is using Modified Stableford, according to the tour.

Johnson did not seem to mind the switch, calling himself “a conservatively aggressive guy.” The two-time major champion turned 50 in February and won his first title on the senior tour in March.

“There’s opportunities on certain courses, and this would be one of them, where I’m going to push a little bit more, I’m going to hit the driver instead of what have you,” Johnson said. “So I think the beauty of this place is the character. You’ve got short, you’ve got long, you’ve got left, you’ve got right, you’ve got up, you’ve got down. You can be aggressive on certain holes, you can hit driver a lot of places, you can lay it back in a lot of places. So you’ve got to be committed, and it gives you options.”

He rolled in six birdies with one bogey over his first eight holes. The scoring slowed down on the back nine, but he jumped from +13 to +15 by two-putting the finishing par-5.

That put him one point ahead of Ben Crane and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee. Tied for fourth at +12 were Paul Stankowski, Retief Goosen of South Africa and K.J. Choi of South Korea. Last year’s champion under traditional stroke play, Jerry Kelly, is tied for seventh at +11.

Jaidee managed to card seven birdies without a bogey.

“You have to make more points because … par (is) nothing,” Jaidee said. “That’s why we gameplan to attack the hole. When you hit in the fairway, you have a short iron, you try to attack the pin. That’s why we do it today. And good thing to me, I had pretty good iron today. Putting working today.”

Crane turned 50 this year like Johnson and finished second at last week’s Senior PGA Championship, his first senior major.

He had to overcome two bogeys on his round Friday but it helped to birdie three of the final four holes.

“Just didn’t play as great as I scored, but that’s the way it works in this format,” Crane explained. “Actually, Retief and I both shot 66 and I had 14 points and he had 12. Had some bogeys in there that don’t cost you as much. All in all, just thankful. I really putted well coming down the stretch there, gave myself some opportunities, so just a fun day.”

ALEX SMALLEY, HAYDEN SPRINGER LEAD ZURICH BY 1 AFTER FITZPATRICKS’ SURGE

Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer birdied two of their final three holes to recover the lead from Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick midway through the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Friday at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La.

The English brothers put up the round of the day as a foursomes pair, a 7-under-par 65, to move into the lead at 15 under. They held that lead late in the day before first-round leaders Smalley and Springer, who started on the back nine, made up for bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 with birdies at Nos. 7 and 8.

Smalley and Springer climbed to 16-under 128 after posting a 70. Tied with the Fitzpatricks at 15 under were Billy Horschel/Tom Hoge (68) and Davis Thompson/Austin Eckroat (70).

Sports

Seventy-four teams entered the unique event, where teams of two play four-ball (best ball) in the first and third rounds and foursomes (alternate shot) in the second and fourth rounds. Alternate shot is considered the more difficult of the two formats.

After their birdie at the seventh, Smalley stuck his approach at No. 8 to 3 feet of the cup for Springer to tap in.

“I don’t know if Hayden missed a putt inside of 10 feet all day, so that was huge,” Smalley said.

Springer also hit a key bunker shot at the par-5 second hole to 8 feet for Smalley to convert into a birdie.

Springer, best known for shooting a 59 at the 2024 John Deere Classic, is currently grinding on the Korn Ferry Tour with limited PGA Tour starts. A win this week would grant him the normal two-year exemption on tour.

“It’s interesting to kind of be on that bubble … I’m hoping that I can play a little bit better and get out of that position, but it’s just part of it,” Smalley said.

The Fitzpatricks’ big move came at the turn. They eagled their ninth hole of the day, the par-5 18th, when Matt Fitzpatrick hit a high pitch shot that rolled on a perfect line into the cup. The duo birdied their next two holes to make it a 4-under, three-hole stretch.

“Nice to … steal an eagle there at the last,” Matt Fitzpatrick said. “You are looking to nestle it down there from 2 or 3 feet and tap in birdie. Nice to steal one.”

After their lone bogey of the day at the par-3 third, they added the final two of their six birdies at Nos. 5 and 7.

The Fitzpatricks have played the event together since 2023 but missed the cut last year. Their form is much better this year: Matt Fitzpatrick has risen to No. 3 in the world rankings with a pair of victories, and Alex Fitzpatrick won his first career title at the Hero Indian Open.

“Obviously playing here as a family has been great for us, not seeing each other that much in the year,” Alex Fitzpatrick said. “Since we first came here I think four years ago now, you guys have made us incredibly welcomed.”

Horschel and Hoge finished the round hot — five birdies and one bogey over the last six holes. Horschel won this event with teammate Scott Piercy in 2018.

“I knew we were going to have some birdie opportunities,” Horschel said. “We did a good job of doing that, and we were rewarded with birdieing really five of the last six holes.”

Six teams are tied two shots back at 14 under. Of those six, the Norwegian tandem of Kristoffer Reitan and Kris Ventura had the best score Friday, a 5-under 67.

The top 33 teams and ties made the 36-hole cut, which landed at 10 under par. Brooks Koepka and Irishman Shane Lowry, who teamed up for the first time this year, missed the cut by a single shot after rounds of 66 and 69.

AUTO RACING

DENNY HAMLIN, KYLE BUSCH BRING RIVALRY TO TALLADEGA

The NASCAR Cup Series gets crazier this weekend as it shifts to Alabama, but the white-knuckling, anxiety-producing track known as Talladega Superspeedway would not be the best place to resolve the back-and-forth between veteran drivers Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch.

The prosperous pair bring a much-heated rivalry — the season’s first real testy sparring — to a venue that usually adds enough tension and dread as soon as the haulers are within sight of the 2.66-mile layout.

The future first-ballot NASCAR Hall of Famers will race in Sunday’s Jack Link’s 500 in the 10th event of a 2026 season that has competed very cleanly over the past five races — roughly 14 cautions for on-track incidents, not stage breaks — after a season-high 12 yellows waved at Phoenix on March 8.

Sparking a flame with his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, the 44-year-old Hamlin wondered on his “Actions Detrimental” podcast about the current situation for Busch after Bristol when Busch and crew chief Jim Pohlman drew attention for sparring over the radio about their loose Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet that finished a season-worst 35th at Kansas.

Busch, who turns 41 next week, retaliated in a media scrum at Kansas last weekend, saying, “…in this instance, I don’t feel like even Denny Hamlin knows what he’s talking about.”

Sitting 27th in points, owning no top 10s and leading just 19 laps this season, the Las Vegas native has crafted a career that has typically produced elite numbers for a competitor Hamlin deemed as a “Hall of Fame Mount Rushmore driver” on his show.

Busch has 233 NASCAR victories — 63 in Cup — but how many more will he add?

When the 2015 and 2019 Cup champ joined RCR in 2023, it looked like he had found the right place after finishing poorly at Gibbs.

He won in two of the first 10 races, flying under the checkers first in Fontana, Calif., and then at this weekend’s Talladega race three years ago. His No. 8 Chevy won again on June 4, 2023, at Gateway near St. Louis, but that’s been it.

It’s been over 100 races since his last victory, his longest career drought.

“I have to be honest to the people who tune in and listen, but I have to go on the race track with him,” said Hamlin on FOX’s Kansas pre-race show. “But I know this. I was teammates with Kyle Busch, and I know he taught me more than any teammate I ever was with. … I know what he’s capable of, and I know he’s not loving where he’s at (competitively).

“I’m rooting for him because the sport needs old Kyle Busch.”

Talladega is the great equalizer this weekend.

The Birmingham-adjacent behemoth is the blade that trims all the hedges to equal heights and makes the drivers’ rides mostly equal, keeping them stacked in a pack and preventing separation on Sunday.

Dega, Daytona and maybe Atlanta feature races like the old IROC Series, and at some point, Hamlin and Busch will likely find themselves next to one another or nose-to-tail at high speed.

If the Busch-Hamlin feud actually manifests itself and gets physical, leaning on each other a bit could likely happen at a number of places that race more safely to settle a score, like half-mile bullrings or curving road courses.

Treacherous Talladega isn’t one of those tracks.

COLTS FOOTBALL

(COLTS RELEASE)

Four years ago, Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn’t have a first round pick but had his eye on snagging a rangy, fast wide receiver from Cincinnati with his first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Instead of taking Alec Pierce with the No. 42 overall pick, though, Ballard traded down 11 spots with the Minnesota Vikings, adding a third round pick in the process. He still got Pierce with the 53rd pick. And then, with that third rounder he picked up from Minnesota, he drafted Central Michigan tackle Bernhard Raimann.

Four years later, Pierce and Raimann are foundational pieces to the Colts’ offense, with each earning market-rate new contracts in the last eight months.

And, four years after knocking back 11 picks despite not having a first round selection, Ballard went back to the same well – this time with his eye on adding a pick and still getting an athletic, physical and smart MIKE linebacker from an SEC powerhouse. Coincidentally, Ballard wound up in the same spot he was with Pierce, holding the 53rd overall pick after trading back with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night.

The Colts didn’t go as far back – from 47 to 53 in 2026 – and added a fourth round pick (No. 135 overall) from the Steelers, while also swapping seventh round selections. But that extra fourth rounder may come in handy on Saturday as Ballard looks to build upside and depth across the Colts’ roster on Day 3.

And he still got Georgia linebacker CJ Allen anyway.

“We’ve liked CJ through the whole process,” Ballard said Friday. “He stands for all the right stuff. He’s an athletic, fast MIKE. He’ll be a green-dot guy for us from the get-go. I mean, he’s a face of the program type of guy. He’s a really special dude now. Loves to play, serious about football. It’s evident when you watch Georgia tape. I mean, he shows up and look, I mean (head coach) Kirby (Smart) and (defensive coordinator) Will Muschamp, … they were effusive in what kind of player this kid is. It’s a good fit for us.”

Ballard revealed he considered trading back again from pick No. 53, but the risk of losing Allen was significant enough he didn’t take it. Notably, the Minnesota Vikings drafted Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golday two picks before the Colts went on the clock; at No. 60 overall, the Tennessee Titans selected Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. Add in Texas Tech’s Jacob Rodriguez going at No. 43 to the Miami Dolphins, and there was a bit of a run on linebackers in the second round – so kicking back further from 53 very well could’ve resulted in Allen going elsewhere.

“We were just at a point with CJ – we didn’t want to lose him.” Ballard said. “We’d already kind of played with fire once when we moved back. Our analytics team, Greg (Starek) and them do a great job – kind of where guys are going to go and target. We thought we could kick back and still get him. We had one more chance and we’re like, ‘No, let’s don’t chance it.'”

In Allen, the Colts brought in a player who could be a direct replacement for veteran Zaire Franklin, who was traded to the Green Bay Packers for defensive tackle Colby Wooden in March. Allen first earned a starting role at Georgia as a freshman in 2023, no small feat for a program that’s produced highly picked and highly paid off-ball linebackers like Roquan Smith, Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean over the last decade. His blend of athleticism, instincts, work ethic and football IQ made him a standout in the crucible of Athens, Ga., and are all traits Ballard and the Colts believe can translate quickly to the NFL.

“It started as a true freshman and wore (the green communications dot) – like that’s hard to do,” Ballard said. “And in that defense, they stress them, now. They stress them mentally. He handled that at a young age, and it wasn’t too big for him. I’ve been fortunate now to be around some really good ones. Like Anthony Walker Jr. (a 2017 fifth round pick) is about as smart as they come and he picked it up pretty quick here. I would expect CJ to do the same thing.”

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Indians utilized seven strikeouts from Thomas Harrington and a pair of home runs by Tyler Callihan and Davis Wendzel to defeat the St. Paul Saints in comeback fashion at Victory Field on Friday night, 4-3. The win clinched Indy’s first series victory of the season.

An RBI single by Esmerlyn Valdez in the first inning began the scoring, with the Saints (9-15) tying and taking the lead on home runs by Alex Jackson and Gabby Gonzales in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff walk to Mitch Jebb set up Callihan’s game-tying two-run homer.

Wendzel’s solo shot led off the bottom of the seventh to give the Indians (10-15) the lead and cap the scoring against Matt Bowman (L, 1-1).

Joe La Sorsa tossed a perfect inning to open the game before Harrington took over and fanned seven over 5.0 innings. Harrington allowed three runs on six hits over a season-high 5.0 frames. Brandon Neeck (W, 1-1), Chris Devenski and Michael Darrell-Hicks (S, 1) slammed the door with 3.0 hitless innings.

The Indians will go for their fifth straight win on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 PM. RHP Noah Davis (1-2, 2.74) will take the mound for Indianapolis against RHP Mike Paredes (0-1, 16.20).

Indy Eleven midfielder Jack Blake made his first appearance of 2026 and scored a goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Boys in Blue fell 2-1 to Union Omaha in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round action at Carroll Stadium on March 31.

Blake entered in the 67th minute with his team playing down a man after goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook was issued a red card.

In the 93rd minute, Blake chipped a left-footed ball from outside the area to the corner of the six to Bruno Rendon, but his shot was stopped. Thirty seconds later, midfielder Josh O’Brien started the scoring sequence with a cross from the right side that was deflected into the edge of the area, where defender Logan Neidlinger volleyed it on goal. Union Omaha goalkeeper Cole Jensen made the save, but the rebound caromed to Blake, who buried it with his left foot.

Edward Kizza Volley Wins “Goal of the Week”
Forward Edward Kizza’s cannonading volley into the upper 90 at Birmingham last Sunday is the winner of the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week, presented by SELECT.

The last Boys in Blue player to win this award was Cam Lindley in Week 16 of the 2023 season for his goal at Hartford Athletic.

Forward Bruno Rendon ran down a ball in the corner to start the sequence, playing it back to defender Makel Rasheed, who served it into the box, where forward Edward Kizza volleyed it sharply into the top right corner to tie the match at 1-1.

It is Kizza’s 21st career goal in USL C play and the first Boys in Blue and USL-C assist for Rasheed, who played three seasons collegiately at UIndy. Rasheed tied for team-high honors with two chances created along with captain Aodhan Quinn.

Indy Eleven rallied with two second-half goals to extend its unbeaten streak to five (2-0-3) with a 2-2 road draw at Birmingham Legion FC. The five-match unbeaten run is the longest for the Boys in Blue since late in the 2024 campaign.

Goalkeeper Eric Dick made three saves, including a diving stop with his left hand in the 78th minute on a shot from inside the area by Gevork Diarbian to keep the match level.

In the 81st minute, Quinn started the sequence that gave Indy Eleven the lead with a perfect throw-in down the left sideline to sub Logan Neidlinger, who waited patiently to play a cross from inside the area that midfielder Josh O’Brien volleyed home with his right foot fully extended to give his team a 2-1 lead.

It is the 23-year-old O’Brien’s second goal in USL-C play for the Boys in Blue–he scored vs. Birmingham in the 2025 USL Cup. The assist is the first in 2026 and the second career one for the 20-year-old Neidlinger, who tied for team best with two tackles won.

Radio: 93.5/107.5 The Fan

GAME PREVIEW:

Believe it or not, the Fever take the floor this weekend. It’s been a mad dash over the past few weeks, with free agency, the draft, training camp, and media day all compressed over a short timeline. The Fever tipped off training camp on Sunday with a roster assembled just days earlier and will have had just five days of practice before they take the court for the first time in the preseason on Saturday afternoon against the Liberty.

The Fever brought back much of their core from last season’s team that reached the WNBA Semifinals, re-signing All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell as well as key rotation players Lexie Hull, Sophie Cunningham, and Damiris Dantas. They join a returning core that includes All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark as well as second-year forward Makayla Timpson.

Indiana prioritized adding experienced veterans in free agency, bringing in forwards Monique Billings and Myisha Hines-Allen as well as guards Ty Harris and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. All of them are WNBA veterans, with Walker-Kimbrough in her 11th season, Billings and Hines-Allen entering their ninth seasons, and Harris beginning her seventh.

In the WNBA Draft, the Fever selected South Carolina guard Raven Johnson with the 10th overall pick and early reports from camp have raved about her eagerness to learn and tenacity on the defensive end. They also added sharpshooter Justine Pissott from Vanderbilt — who they signed to a player development contract — in the second round.

There will be plenty of attention on the Fever’s new additions this preseason, but also on Clark and Cunningham, both of whom are back on the court with Indiana for the first time since suffering season-ending injuries last season. Clark last played for the Fever on July 15, missing the rest of the year with a groin injury, while Cunningham tore her right MCL on Aug. 17.

The Liberty also brought back most of their core, including All-Stars Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones. They added another star in three-time All-Star Satou Sabally. The 2024 WNBA champions have aspirations of bouncing back from a first-round exit in 2025 and chasing another title.

IU FOOTBALL

PITTSBURGH – Bloomington West is gaining steam with the selection of running back Kaelon Black by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Black is the third Hoosier picked by the organization over the past two seasons along with CJ West and Kurtis Rourke in 2025.

Indiana continues to set program marks in its NFL Draft history and now has a program-best four selection in the first three rounds and its most picks in a single draft since four during the 1988 draft.

Black is the highest-drafted Indiana running back since Tevin Coleman was the 73rd overall selection by Atlanta in the 2015 NFL Draft. The last IU ball carrier taken in the NFL Draft came 10 years ago when Jordan Howard was a fifth-round selection of the Chicago Bears.

2026 NFL Draft Selections
1.1 – Fernando Mendoza, QB – Las Vegas Raiders
1.30 – Omar Cooper Jr., WR – New York Jets
2.50 – D’Angelo Ponds, CB – New York Jets
3.90 – Kaelon Black, RB – San Francisco 49ers

With 56 career games played and 16 starts – 29 games as a Hoosier – the posted the 21st 1,000-yard rushing season in program history with 1,040 yards on 186 carries and 10 touchdowns in 2025. Over 16 games this season, Black produced double-digit carries in 13 times and produced at least 60 yards rushing 11 times to go along with a 110-yard effort at Maryland and 99-yard outing against Alabama in the Rose Bowl.

Combined with Roman Hemby‘s 1,120 yards rushing, the duo is just the second in program history to reach the century mark in the same season. The only other season IU had multiple 1,000-yard rushers was the 2015 campaign with Jordan Howard (1,213) and Devine Redding (1,012).

For his career, he had 2,596 yards rushing and 17 scores to go along with 55 receptions and 528 yards and six scores. He owned four career 100-yard rushing games (1 at IU; 3 at JMU) and produced 3,202 career all-purpose yards with 23 touchdowns (17 rush, 6 receiving).

IU BASEBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Impactful hits from the bottom of the order helped visiting Iowa (24-16, 8-11 B1G) to a big 12-2 win over the Indiana Baseball team (19-23, 6-13 B1G) on Friday (April 24) evening at Bart Kaufman Field. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue (32-16, 9-10) falls 8-7 to Northwestern (25-19, 12-7) despite record-breaking performances in the series-opener.

The Boilers open up the series by adding four new additions to the top of the program record books.

The Boilers delivered their 27th double-play of the year in the third, breaking the Purdue single-season double play record.

Anna Moore broke the single-season RBI record on a sac-fly in the sixth, bringing Moriah Polar in for her 55th of the season. This was another 19-year-old record held by Katie Mitchell from the 2007 season.

With seven runs scored, Purdue also broke the single-season runs-scored program record with 309 total runs this year.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF

GLENDALE, Calif. – Competing in the Big Ten Championships for the first time, freshman Luana Valero fired a career-low 67 (-3) to lead Purdue Women’s Golf in the opening round of the conference tournament. Entering the event as the seventh seed, the Boilermakers (+4) sit in a tie for fourth with 36 holes left to play at Oakmont Country Club.

No. 2 USC (-3) leads the tournament, while Purdue is only two shots back of second place, shared by Illinois and Ohio State at 2-over.

Valero’s 67 was the second-best round ever by a Boilermaker in the conference tournament, just one stroke behind Maria Hernandez’s 66 at the 2008 B1G Championships. The Medellin, Colombia, native used six birdies to jump up to second on the individual leaderboard. After an opening bogey, she got the shot back with a birdie at the second. Despite a bogey at the par-3 third, the freshman remained undeterred by responding with three straight birdies. Valero made fourth consecutive pars before a deuce at No. 11, the fifth birdie of the day. Her final birdie came at No. 17, and a two-putt par at the 18th wrapped up her best round in the Old Gold and Black.

Samantha Brown added a 1-over 71 by making a team-high 14 pars. The sophomore started the back nine with a birdie, her first of the day. She made another at No. 14 as part of a 10-hole bogey-free stretch. An unfortunate break on No. 17 led to a double bogey and prevented Brown from an under-par round, but she is tied for 16th individually.

Ashley Kim made three birdies, second-most on the team Friday, on her way to a 72 (+2). Lauren Timpf also contributed to the team’s score with a 74 (+4).

Purdue is within striking distance and looks to move up the leaderboard during Saturday’s second round. The Boilermakers will be paired with Penn State (+4) and Michigan State (+5), teeing off the first hole beginning at 12:20 p.m. ET (9:20 a.m. PT).

NOTRE DAME BASEBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team earned a 12-2 (7 innings) win over No. 22 Boston College on Friday night at Frank Eck Stadium.

Jack Radel forced the Eagles into stranding a pair of runners on base in the top of the first by inducing a flyout to Drew Berkland in left field.

Boston College scored the first run of the game in the top of the second with a single and a double. Radel retired nine of the next ten batters he faced, which included striking out the side in the top of the fourth.

The Eagles put the first two batters of the fifth inning on base with back-to-back singles, but Jack Radel put a stop to the scoring chance. The junior got a big strikeout before inducing a double play as Parker Brzustewicz collected the grounder at third and threw across for the force out at first to slam the door.

Jayce Lee led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line. Dylan Passo then drove in Lee from second with a single to right field to knot the game 1-1. Parker Bruzstewicz then went the other way with a double off the base of the wall in right-center to put the Irish up 2-1. Brandon Logan delivered a key single with one out to plate Brzustewicz for a 3-1 Irish advantage. The Eagles intentionally walked Bino Watters, and Noah Coy ripped a double down the right field line to push the lead to 5-1. Mark Quatrani kept things going by driving a double down the left field line and Watters and Coy came in to score. Dylan Passo then drilled a 393-foot home run to right field as the Irish put a 10-spot up in the inning.

Boston College put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth to make it a 10-2 game. Bino Watters came up with the response for the Irish in the bottom half of the inning with a 107-mph home run to left field to push the lead back to nine at 11-2 through six.

Jack Radel struck out the first two batters of the seventh. The Eagles put a pair on base, but Radel used his 11th strikeout to close out the inning for another quality start on the hill.

Dylan Passo was hit by a pitch before Parker Brzustewicz drew a walk to put a pair on base. A wild pitch allowed the pair to move up 90 feet, and the Eagles opted to intentionally walk Jamie Zee to load the bases. Brandon Logan then delivered the final shot with a single to left field to drive in Passo for the 12-2 Irish win in seven innings.

Dylan Passo went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBI at the dish. Jayce Lee was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Mark Quatrani and Brandon Logan both went 2-for-4 at the dish as they each drove in two and scored once. Drew Berkland added a 2-for-4 effort with a double and a run, and Bino Watters was 1-for-3 with a home run and two runs. Parker Brzustewicz added a double, two walks, an RBI and a run.

Jack Radel went 7.0 on the bump with 11 strikeouts en route to the win for the Irish. It marked his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season and fifth of his career.

The Irish (19-18, 8-14 ACC) take on Boston College for game two of the three-game series on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. ET at Frank Eck Stadium.

BALL STATE SOFTBALL

MUNCIE, Ind. – – The Ball State softball team opened senior weekend with a thrilling 4-3 (8) victory over Kent State Friday afternoon at the Ball State Softball Stadium courtesy of a bases-loaded, walk-off single from redshirt sophomore catcher Allee Noble.

To get there, Cardinals (18-25; 5-17 Mid-American Conference) rallied from two runs down after the top of the first, survived a one hour and 37-minute rain delay and beat yet another incoming storm.

Battling to stay alive in the hunt for a MAC Championship berth, the Golden Flashes (19-26; 7-15 MAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 edge thanks to an RBI single through the left side from Ashlyn Porter.

However, designated player Ella Whitney was not going to let the guests spoil her senior weekend, blasting her 12th and 13th home runs of the season in the bottom of the first and third innings, respectively, to even the score.

The Cardinals would then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a one-out triple from Noble and an RBI single from senior left fielder Ashlee Lovett. It was Noble’s first career triple and the team’s 11 of the season.

Unfortunately, KSU’s Caleigh Shaulis smashed a sac fly to right field in the top of the fifth to even the score.

Following the rain delay after the bottom of the sixth and a scoreless seventh, redshirt junior third baseman Skylinn Pogue opened the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. Two batters later, freshman second baseman Ayvah Cullen singled to center field and was followed by a walk to redshirt senior Hayley Urban to load the bases.

Cue the heroics from Noble who smashed the first pitch she saw into left center to give the Cardinals the walk-off win.

Earning the win in the circle for Ball State was junior reliever Brinkley Kita, who entered after the rain delay and limited Kent State to a pair of hits and a walk over the final two innings. Her biggest pitch came in the top of the eighth, when she forced a grounder to short for an inning-ending double play.

Ball State and Kent State return to action Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Ball State Softball Stadium. After the conclusion of the twinbill, the Cardinals will honor its six-member senior class: Jessica Hoffman, Lovett, Grace Spencer, Lindsey DeRoeck, Whitney and Urban.

INDIANA STATE BASEBALL

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ryan Karst and Colby Morse out-dueled the Evansville pitching staff and John Curl came through with the 10th inning walk-off sacrifice fly as Indiana State took the series opener over the Purple Aces at Bob Warn Field on Friday night with the 4-3 win.

The Sycamores (23-19, 9-4) entered the bottom of the 10th trailing Evansville (15-24, 8-5) after the Aces scored in the top of the frame thanks in part to an Indiana State error. Aaron Nehls opened the inning reaching on a single to center and took second on the play after Carter Beck was unable to field the ball cleanly. After Benji Kautto flew out to left center allowing Nehls to move up to third, Simon Schulz connected on the go-ahead sacrifice fly scoring Nehls to put the score at 3-2 Evansville.

Indiana State rallied back in the bottom of the frame against UE reliever Kellen Roberts (1-2). Beck opened the inning drawing a walk, and then moved around as Emil Estrella singled to left and Caden Miller dropped down a bunt single to load the bases with none out. Nick Sutherlin was hit by a Roberts’ pitch to bring Beck across the plate and tie the game up at 3-3.

After reliever Owen Byberg retired Mason Roell on a shallow popup to the shortstop in left field, John Curl came through with one of the biggest moments of his collegiate career as the senior connected on the game-winning sacrifice fly to center field allowing Emil Estrella to score on the plate for the walk-off RBI and secured the Sycamore win.

The late inning offense offset a classic pitchers’ duel at Bob Warn Field as Indiana State starting pitcher Ryan Karst and UE starter Max Hansmann both went 7.0 innings in their respective starts. Karst allowed three hits and two runs while striking out a career-high nine batters for the Sycamores, while Hansmann allowed four hits and a run while walking four and striking out five for the Aces.

Indiana State reliever Colby Morse (3-1) out-dueled the UE pitching staff late as Morse retired the first six outs via strikeout on his way to posting a career-high seven strikeouts over 3.0 innings of work. Morse allowed just the Nehls single, while hitting two batters in recording his third win of the season.

Emil Estrella recorded three of the Sycamores’ nine hits in the contest and added two runs scored in the win. Caden Miller added an RBI double in the first inning among his two hits on the night, while Nick Sutherlin doubled and drove in a pair of runs in the contest. Carter Beck drew two walks and scored twice to keep his on-base streak alive.

How They Scored

Indiana State took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Emil Estrella scored from first on Caden Miller’s RBI double.

Evansville took advantage of a walk issued to Simon Schulz and Spike Magill getting hit by a pitch, with Charlie Longmeier delivering a two-run double down the right field line in the top of the sixth inning to put the Aces ahead 2-1.

Indiana State tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Carter Beck slid home ahead of the throw on Nick Sutherlin’s sacrifice fly. Beck reached on a leadoff walk and moved around the bases on Emil Estrella’s single and a wild pitch, before coming around to score.

Evansville went ahead 3-2 in the top of the 10th inning as Aaron Nehls scored on Simon Schulz’s sacrifice fly to right field to put the Purple Aces back in the lead.

Indiana State loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the 10th inning with Nick Sutherlin bringing in the first run after getting hit by a pitch allowing Carter Beck to score to tie the game.

Two batters later, John Curl connected on the walk-off RBI sacrifice fly to right center scoring Emil Estrella from third base to close out the 4-3 Indiana State win.

News and Notes

Caden Miller’s on-base streak reached 21 consecutive games following his first inning RBI double. He finished the game 2-for-5 from the plate with an RBI.

Emil Estrella became the third Sycamore with a double-digit hitting streak after hitting safely with a first inning single. Estrella’s streak sits at 10 games following the Friday night contest after going 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored.

Carter Beck extended his on-base streak to 26 games after drawing a walk in the bottom of the eighth inning. He finished 0-for-3 from the plate with two walks and two runs scored.

Emil Estrella recorded his team-leading seventh three-hit game of the season and 16th multi-hit game of 2026 in the win.

Ryan Karst recorded his second quality start of the season and second start in conference play going at least 7.0 innings on Friday night.

Ryan Karst set a new personal-best with nine strikeouts in the game, breaking his previous mark of seven set on March 30 at Valparaiso earlier this year.

Ryan Karst’s nine strikeouts are the most by an Indiana State pitcher in the 2026 season and most by a Sycamore since Max McEwen struck out 11 last season on April 4, 2025, against Belmont.

Colby Morse’s seven strikeouts in relief set a new career-high for the Sycamore right-hander, breaking his previous high of six set last season on April 1, 2025, at SIUE.

Ryan Karst and Colby Morse combined to record 10 consecutive outs via strikeout from the final out in the top of the sixth inning, through the final out in the top of the ninth.

The Sycamore pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in the game, the most in a single game by the Indiana State pitching staff in 2026 and most by the Sycamores in a single game since the 2024 season when Indiana State retired 16 Valparaiso hitters on May 16, 2024.

Indiana State improved to 3-3 in extra-inning games played this season with Friday night’s win.

The Sycamores recorded their third walk-off win at Bob Warn Field this season including the 4-3 11th inning win over Illinois (Mar. 18) and the 20-10 eighth inning win over UIC (Apr. 2).

The Valpo softball team kicked off its final home series of the season on a winning note Friday, as a three-run homer from Grace Hollopeter (Lake Village, Ind./North Newton [Purdue Fort Wayne]) was the big blow in a five-run fifth inning which gave the Beacons the lead for good in a 7-6 win over Bradley. With rain coming down throughout the game and starting to intensify a bit late in the contest, Friday’s scheduled nightcap was postponed and the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday.

How It Happened

Bradley struck in its first time at the plate, getting a two-out RBI double in the top of the first to take the lead.

The Beacons struck back with a pair of runs in their first opportunity. Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron) took advantage of a Bradley error to reach and then raced all the way home from first on a shot to the right-center gap from Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]). After Gallagher moved up to second on a base hit from Kaia Garnica (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central), Kyndal Shively (Bloomington, Ill./University) pinch-ran at second base and came around on a shot through the left side from Hollopeter.

The teams put up matching zeroes over the next three innings, but it wasn’t for lack of baserunners. Both teams had a frame with a runner in scoring position and one out without scoring. Most notably, Bradley opened the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles, initiating a call to the bullpen for Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]). The senior came in and picked up consecutive strikeouts before getting a grounder back to the circle to keep the Braves off the board.

Bradley put three runs on the board in the fifth, opening the inning with a double and a single before a three-run homer by Ashley Breeding to make it 4-2 Braves.

But Valpo answered in a big way with a five-spot in its half of the fifth. Jackson singled and Gallagher walked to open the inning, but back-to-back outs put the Braves one out away from getting out of the inning. Hollopeter had other ideas, however, taking a 2-0 pitch and lining it over the fence down the left-field line for a three-run homer and a 5-4 lead.

The Beacons weren’t done yet, however. Sophia Leitzen (Orfordville, Wis./Brodhead) watched four straight balls go by to draw a walk and then scored on a line drive the other way from Lillian Martinez (Hemlock, Mich./Hemlock) which scooted all the way to the fence in left-center. Martinez completed the five-run inning by touching home on a double to the center-field fence from Lopez.

A solo homer by Kierston McCoy with one out in the sixth cut Valpo’s edge to 7-5 and prompted a return to Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) in the circle, who had started the game at pitcher. McDermott pitched around a two-out error to get out of that frame.

Down to their final out in the seventh, the Braves made it interesting. A single and subsequent error gave them a runner in scoring position, and they cashed in on an ensuing run-scoring single, making it a 7-6 game with the potential tying run on base. But a highlight-reel play from Kim Rodas (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) at shortstop closed out the win, as the senior laid out to her right to snag a low line drive and secure the victory.

Inside the Game

The win is the fifth time this season the Beacons have captured the opening game of a weekend three-game MVC series.

Hollopeter was the star at the plate, coming up clutch with her third multi-hit game of the season. Her four RBIs marked a season high by a Valpo player.

Gallagher reached base three times, adding two walks to her RBI single. She has drawn 34 free passes this year, fifth-most in a single season in program history, and now owns 70 career walks in just two seasons at Valpo, tied for sixth in program history.

Gallagher also bumped her season RBI total to 41, eighth-most in a campaign in program history.

Led by Gallagher’s pair of walks, Valpo drew five walks on Friday — the 12th time this season the Beacons have worked at least five walks.

As a team, Valpo has racked up 162 walks this year, tied for fourth-most in a single season in program history.

Seven Beacons combined for the team’s eight hits on Friday. Garnica joined Hollopeter and Gallagher in reaching base multiple times, picking up a hit and a walk.

Martinez’s fifth-inning RBI double was the first run driven in of her collegiate career.

It’s not every day you see a starting pitcher pick up a save, but that’s exactly what happened Friday, as McDermott started and pitched into the fourth inning before exiting, only to return and record the final five outs of the game to earn her second save of the season. It is believed to be the first time in Valpo softball history that a starting pitcher has registered a save.

The Valpo pitching staff has recorded eight saves this year, tied for second-most in a single season in program history and just one off the school record.

All told, McDermott threw 4.2 innings, and while she had to deal with numerous baserunners, she handled the traffic on the basepaths well, only allowing one earned run.

Lopez picked up the win as she was the pitcher of record during Valpo’s five-run fifth when it took the lead for good — her insurance RBI double to cap that frame proving vital by game’s end. The senior threw 2.1 innings to improve to 7-8 on the season.

Next Up

Valpo (18-28, 6-16 MVC) will complete its final home series of the season tomorrow with a twinbill against the Braves starting at noon. The program’s Senior Day celebration will be held following the conclusion of the second game.

VALPO BASEBALL

Each team hit three home runs in Friday’s series opener as the Valparaiso University baseball team came up a run shy in an 8-7 defeat to Belmont at Emory G. Bauer Field. Freshman Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove), junior Louie Kegerreis (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) and redshirt freshman Javin Gauthier (De Pere, Wis. / De Pere) all homered for the Beacons.

How It Happened

Belmont scored the first run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Two soft singles started the inning, eventually leading to a run.

After the first two Bruins of the game reached base, Valpo starting pitcher Adam Guazzo (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) sent down 11 straight batters, as he would not surrender another hit until a two-out double in the fourth. By that time, Valpo had taken a 2-1 lead, as Schembra led off the bottom of the third with a 396-foot home run before a sac fly by Gauthier put the Beacons in front.

The Valpo center fielder made a sprawling attempt on a looping line drive to center, the ball bounced past him, and the left fielder backing up the play slipped, allowing Nate Webb to get all the way to third with a leadoff triple to start the top of the fifth. He crossed the dish a moment later on a squeeze bunt to tie the game at two.

Redshirt junior Thomas Cooper (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, stole third and scored as the catcher’s throw sailed into left field, putting Valpo ahead 3-2.

Guazzo fired a 1-2-3 sixth, and he got two strikeouts in the seventh prior to a key spot with two outs and two on with Valpo clinging to a 3-2 lead. Belmont’s Charlie Davis hit a first-pitch, three-run homer to put the Bruins ahead 5-3.

Guazzo walked off the mound trailing, but still had a chance to be the winning pitcher as the team picked him up by regaining the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) laid down a squeeze bunt to make it a one-run game, then Gauthier hit a go-ahead, two-run shot on a ball that was nearly caught by the right fielder and just cleared the right-field wall to put Valpo back in front at 6-5.

Valpo still led 6-5 with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Jake Maddox drilled a go-ahead, two-run homer to rearrange the scoreboard. Michael Lareau led off the top of the ninth with a home run that expanded the Belmont edge to 8-6. That insurance run proved to be the difference in the game.

With one away in the bottom of the ninth, Kegerreis cracked one nearly 400 feet, moving the Beacons within a run, but that’s where the score stood as the next two outs were recorded.

Inside the Game

Kegerreis hit the 15th home run of his collegiate career and his first in a Valpo uniform.

Gauthier and Schembra each smacked their sixth home run of the season, tied for second on the team. Gauthier homered for the second consecutive game.

As a team, Valpo tied a season high for home runs with its fourth three-homer game of the season.

The Beacons owned a 10-9 edge in the hit column, but they stranded eight on base while Belmont left just three on base.

Valpo pitching issued just one walk while recording nine strikeouts on Friday.

Guazzo worked a career-high seven innings while tying a career high with seven strikeouts, equaling his high from May 12, 2024 at Murray State. Over his last two starts, Guazzo has worked 13 1/3 innings and allowed no walks while striking out 13.

Kegerreis and Cooper led the team with two hits apiece.

Redshirt senior Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) walked twice, extending his on-base streak to 22.

Valpo fell to 1-10 this season and 2-19 over the last two seasons in one-run games. Valpo is 0-6 in league games dictated by a single run, as six of their 11 Missouri Valley Conference defeats have come by the slimmest of margins.

Up Next

The Beacons (9-28, 2-11) and Bruins will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Emory G. Bauer Field.
