BIRDIE BARRAGE GIVES RORY MCILROY LARGEST 36-HOLE LEAD IN MASTERS HISTORY

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy’s quest to become only the fourth player to win consecutive Masters might have turned into a 36-hole march toward history thanks to a late birdie barrage on Friday that gave him a record six-shot lead heading into the weekend at Augusta National.

McIlroy carded six birdies over his final seven holes — including a chip-in from 29 yards on No. 17 — to shoot a 7-under-par 65 and sit at 12 under halfway through the 90th Masters. It’s a shot better than the score McIlroy finished 72 holes with before winning his first green jacket in a playoff 12 months ago.

“I knew I had some chances coming in when I was standing on the 12th tee, but I didn’t think I’d birdie six of the last seven. It just shows what you can do around here,” McIlroy said.

The Northern Irishman will be paired in Saturday’s final group with Sam Burns, who shared the 18-hole lead with McIlroy at 5 under. Burns also took advantage of a back nine at Augusta National that gave way to unexpectedly low scores Friday, closing with three birdies over his final four holes to get under par for the day with a 71. He was the first to reach the clubhouse at 6 under.

Burns moved into the final pairing when Patrick Reed’s 6-foot par putt on the 18th hole slid left of the cup. That left the 2018 Masters champion with matching 69s to sit at 6 under for the tournament. Reed briefly tied the lead with a birdie on the 12th to reach 6 under for the first time, with McIlroy bogeying the 10th two holes behind him.

Reed would eventually reach 7 under before the dropped shot at 18.

“The worst part and the thing that frustrated me most is I hit every golf shot how I wanted to. On 18 you’re having to get up and down, and then hit the putt where I wanted to and just doesn’t go in,” Reed said. “Things like that happen around here. In golf in general.”

Behind him, McIlroy was catching fire, starting with a birdie on the 12th hole that surrendered 19 on the day. He drove it into the pine straw on 13, but managed a birdie anyway. He repeated the act on the par-5 15th hole and knocked it to three feet on the par-3 16 before his houdini act on 17. The Northern Irishman then hit his approach to six feet on 18 to set the stage for the closing birdie.

McIlroy holds the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history — and the third largest in any major — despite hitting only five fairways on Friday and 13 of 28 through two rounds. He has managed to hit 13 greens both days while relying heavily on his short game.

“But my wedge play today was really good. My short game the first two days has been amazing,” McIlroy said. “I’ve built up a nice cushion at this point. My mindset is just trying to keep playing well and keeping my foot on the gas.”

If he’s able to close out the victory, he would join Jack Nicklaus (1965-66), Nick Faldo (1989-1990) and Tiger Woods (2001-02) as the only players to win consecutive Masters. Only 18 players have won multiple Masters titles at any point in their careers.

“I think the next two days for me is really about focusing on myself. It’s hard to avoid those big leaderboards out there, but like I know that I’ve got a lead,” McIlroy said. “So, I don’t need to keep checking it all the time. For me, just really focusing on myself and staying in my own little world out there is the best thing.”

Reed will now be paired on Saturday with England’s Justin Rose, who was the first of three players to reach the clubhouse at 5 under on Friday.

For a while, it appeared Rose might be set up for a Saturday pairing with McIlroy 12 months after their dramatic playoff showdown. Rose first reached 5 under with a birdie on the 11th hole before immediately giving it back on the 12th. He battled back with a birdie on the 15th and parred out from there.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Ireland’s Shane Lowry are also at 5 under and will be paired on Saturday. Another shot back is Tyrrell Hatton, who set the tone for the lower-than-expected scoring in the second round by posting a 6-under 66. He is at 4 under along with Wyndham Clark, Cameron Young, Australia’s Jason Day, China’s Haotong Li and Kristoffer Reitan, only the second Norwegian to compete in the Masters.

“This is my best start thus far at Augusta and I’m just really excited to be in this position,” said Clark, whose only other sub-par score in seven previous rounds at the Masters was also a 68 in last year’s second round. “This morning kind of throughout the whole day wasn’t as firm as yesterday. I know we went off in the morning, typically it’s softer.

“I think as the tournament goes on, I mean, these greens are going to be concrete. Obviously getting really fast without the wind, so it’s going to really matter hitting it in the fairway and the angles and being patient.”

The extremely difficult conditions predicted by many players after scores rose throughout Thursday’s first round never materialized on Friday. The scoring average dropped nearly two shots, from 74.65 to 72.85. After only five players broke 70 in the first round, there were 20 scores in the 60s on Friday.

“There wasn’t a ton of wind. It felt somewhat gettable,” Rose said. “I thought the pins were just a little easier than yesterday.”

Scottie Scheffler, who was unable to capitalize on the conditions, said he expects Augusta National’s teeth to return for the weekend. The two-time Masters champion and World No. 1 struggled to a 74 that left him at even par for the tournament and 12 shots off McIlroy’s lead.

“I felt like the greens would get firmer as the week went on, but I think they may have saw how difficult it was late in the day yesterday,” Scheffler said. “It felt like they softened them up a bit today, but I couldn’t imagine them doing that the rest of the weekend.”

TYRRELL HATTON SURGES, BUT LIV’S MASTERS CONTINGENT CUT IN HALF

AUGUSTA, Ga. — And then there were five.

LIV Golf’s smallest Masters Tournament representation was sliced in half on Friday, with only five players making the cut to play the weekend at Augusta National.

They are led by England’s Tyrrell Hatton, who turned in the second-lowest round of the day with a 6-under-par 66. Teeing off at 9:31 a.m. at 2 over for the tournament, Hatton surged up the leaderboard with seven birdies. He was tied with the overnight leaders at 5 under before dropping a shot on the final hole.

Still, it was Hatton’s best score in 34 rounds at Augusta National by two shots — and only the fourth time he broke 70.

“Today was a great day,” Hatton said. “Actually walking up 18, I was pretty confident that I couldn’t mess it up enough that I wouldn’t shoot my best score here. I mean, naturally I tried with a three-putt, so that was disappointing, to say the least.”

Still, it looked like his score might hold for the best of the day before Rory McIlroy ripped off six birdies over his final seven holes to post a 65. As it stands through 36 holes, Hatton sits in a tie for seventh place that’s eight shots off McIlroy’s lead.

It’s far better than most of his LIV Golf counterparts fared. The next best is Dustin Johnson at even par.

The only other ones to make the cut were Sergio Garcia at 3 over and Jon Rahm and Charl Schwartzel, who made the cut on the number at 4 over.

Bryson DeChambeau reached the 18th hole needing only a bogey to play the weekend, but he suffered a triple bogey to fall back to 6 over. It was the second triple bogey of the week for DeChambeau, who also carded one on the 11th hole Thursday when it took him three attempts to get out of a green-side bunker.

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson was also in position to make the cut until he missed an 18-foot par put on his final hole.

LIV GOLF SCORES THROUGH 36 HOLES

–Tyrrell Hatton: T7, -4
–Dustin Johnson: T24, E
–Sergio Garcia: T45, +3
–Jon Rahm: T47, +4
–Charl Schwartzel: T47, +4
–Bubba Watson: +5
–Bryson DeChambeau: +6
–Tom McKibbin: +7
–Cameron Smith: +7
–Carlos Ortiz: +11

Hatton said he doesn’t believe there is any adjustment needed for LIV players to prepare for the Masters or any other major.

“It’s another tournament that you’re at. You go on to the next hole, and you try your best,” Hatton said. “Wherever you play, whatever the tournament is, you’re always giving it your best, and you’re trying to prepare in a way to give yourself a chance to win the tournament.

“I don’t think anyone that’s playing this week would change anything. That would be my guess. But yeah, every tournament you play, you’re trying to win. This week is no different in that sense.”

The Saudi-backed league already had its fewest number of qualified players before Phil Mickelson withdrew last week due to a family health matter. The number has declined each year since LIV Golf’s inaugural 2022 season, with 18 of the league’s players qualifying for the Masters in 2023.

There were 13 players at Augusta in 2024 and 12 last year. This year’s number was directly impacted by the recent LIV Golf departures of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed. Joaquin Niemann did not receive an invitation after being offered a special invite each of the past two years.

Reed enters the weekend tied for second at 6 under. Koepka shares 13th at 3 under.

NBA

NBA ROUNDUP: HAWKS CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH ROUT OF CAVALIERS

CJ McCollum scored 25 of his game-high 29 points in the first half and Dyson Daniels collected 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists as the Atlanta Hawks clinched a playoff spot with a 124-102 rout of the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.

Jalen Johnson had 18 points and nine rebounds and Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 18 for the Hawks (46-35), who will finish either fifth or sixth in the Eastern Conference. Southeast Division champion Atlanta missed the playoffs in the last two seasons.

Daniels posted his second career triple-double and McCollum drained 6-of-8 3-point attempts. The Hawks built a 92-59 lead in the third quarter, when Alexander-Walker and Johnson each had 11 points to deliver the knockout blow.

James Harden scored 20 points and dished out five assists, and Tyrese Proctor had 15 points in the final quarter for the fourth-seeded Cavaliers (51-30). Cleveland will have home-court advantage in the first round against either Atlanta or the Toronto Raptors.

Lakers 101, Suns 73

LeBron James scored 28 points and dished 12 assists to become the fourth player in NBA history to top 12,000 in a career, leading Los Angeles to a convincing victory over visiting Phoenix.

Luke Kennard added 19 points in the victory that assured Los Angeles will finish no lower than fourth place in the Western Conference and have homecourt advantage in a first-round playoff series. The Lakers remain one game behind the third-place Denver Nuggets with one game to play, and Los Angeles owns the tiebreaker edge.

Dillon Brooks scored 12 points and reserve Royce O’Neale added 11 for the Suns, who were without star Devin Booker (ankle). Phoenix scored just 25 second-half points in a contest that meant nothing after it previously locked up the No. 7 spot in the West and a home play-in game. Grayson Allen exited in the second quarter due to a left hamstring injury and didn’t return.

76ers 105, Pacers 94

Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points, Andre Drummond posted a double-double off the bench, and Philadelphia assured itself of finishing no worse than eighth in the Eastern Conference after beating Indiana in Indianapolis.

With Joel Embiid out due to appendicitis, Drummond produced 10 points and 16 rebounds. The 76ers ended a three-game skid and stayed alive in the chase for the East’s sixth and final automatic playoff berth.

Jarace Walker’s 17 points led the Pacers, who have lost four of the past five. Micah Potter finished 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Pistons 118, Hornets 100

Jalen Duren scored 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and Detroit rode a strong stretch early in the fourth quarter to a win over host Charlotte.

Duncan Robinson racked up 19 points, Cade Cunningham had 14 points, Ronald Holland II posted 13 points and Ausar Thompson added 12 points for the Pistons, who have won five of their past six games. Detroit had already locked up first place in the Eastern Conference. The outcome means the Hornets will be in the East’s play-in tournament.

The loss eliminated any chance that they could advance directly to the playoff bracket. LaMelo Ball’s 27 points, including six 3-point baskets, led the Hornets, while Brandon Miller had 22 points. Coby White, after missing the team’s Tuesday game night because of groin soreness, scored 11 points off the bench.

Bucks 125, Nets 108

AJ Green scored a career-high 35 points to lead Milwaukee to a victory over visiting Brooklyn in Milwaukee’s final home game of the season.

Milwaukee snapped a two-game skid as Green also became just the third Buck ever to make 10 or more 3-pointers in a game (11-for-16). Cormac Ryan added 28 while Taurean Prince scored 18 with 10 rebounds. Jericho Sims posted a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyson Etienne led Brooklyn with 23 points. Malachi Smith nearly contributed a triple-double with 19 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. The Nets only played seven players and each contributed double figures. Reserve Nolan Traore scored 14 points in just over 16 minutes of action.

Nuggets 127, Thunder 107

Jonas Valanciunas amassed 23 points and 17 rebounds, both season highs, and Julian Strawther added 22 points as host Denver beat Oklahoma City in a matchup of benches.

Denver clinched at least the fourth seed in the Western Conference with its 11th straight win. The Nuggets can still capture the No. 3 seed with a win Sunday in San Antonio or a Los Angeles Lakers’ loss. Denver rested its entire starting five and Spencer Jones and Peyton Watson, both of whom have been sidelined with hamstring strains.

Oklahoma City has secured the top overall seed. The only starter dressed for either team was Thunder guard Luguentz Dort, who was required to play at least 20 minutes in each of the final two games to qualify for postseason awards, according to coach Mark Daigneault.

Jazz 147, Grizzlies 101

Rookie Blake Hinson scored a career-high 30 points and two Utah reserves logged triple-doubles, helping the Jazz snap a 10-game losing streak with a demolition of Memphis in Salt Lake City.

Rookie Bez Mbeng logged 27 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds and three steals for his first triple-double. John Konchar registered a triple-double for a second straight game, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals. Kennedy Chandler added 26 points and 10 assists to help the Jazz get in the win column for only the second time in 16 games.

Dariq Whitehead led Memphis with a career-best 21 points. Rookie Toby Okani had a career-high 20 points and Adama Bal added 18 for the Grizzlies, who used just six players while losing their seventh straight game.

Kings 124, Warriors 118

Devin Carter set career highs with six 3-pointers, 29 points and nine rebounds as Sacramento beat visiting Golden State.

Carter shot 11-for-18 from the floor and 6-for-11 from 3-point range for Sacramento, which avenged a 110-105 loss to the Warriors on Tuesday in San Francisco. Maxime Raynaud scored 23 points, Nique Clifford and Daeqwon Plowden scored 20 apiece, and Malik Monk added 11.

Brandin Podziemski led Golden State with a career-high 30 points and De’Anthony Melton added 17. The Warriors lost for the sixth time in their past seven games, and they will compete in the play-in tournament as the No. 10 seed in the West.

Heat 140, Wizards 117

Simone Fontecchio and Pelle Larsson scored 24 points each as Miami snapped a two-game losing streak, crushing host Washington.

Bam Adebayo added 20 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, who are locked into a spot in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament. Adebayo scored a franchise-record 83 points against Washington on March 10. Miami completed a 4-0 season sweep of Washington. The Heat, however, have just four wins over the past 14 games. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 23 points for the Heat, and Kasparas Jakucionis had 16.

Bub Carrington led Washington with 30 points, matching his season high. Bilal Coulibaly added 25 points and five assists and Will Riley scored 16 points for the Wizards, who have the NBA’s worst record as they fell for the 25th time in 26 games.

Knicks 112, Raptors 95

Jalen Brunson scored 14 of his game-high 29 points in the third quarter as New York clinched the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference with a victory over visiting Toronto.

Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 points and 10 rebounds while Mikal Bridges logged 13 points for New York, which has won seven straight home games and five games in a row overall. The Knicks have a 30-9 home mark this season.

Sandro Mamukelashvili produced 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Toronto, which fell into a tie with the Orlando Magic for the sixth and final automatic playoff spot in the East. The Raptors hold the tiebreaker edge. Brandon Ingram had 16 points and six assists for the Raptors. Ja’Kobe Walter went 4 of 7 from beyond the arc en route to 15 points.

Trail Blazers 116, Clippers 97

Deni Avdija scored 15 of his game-high 35 points in the fourth quarter and helped fuel a crucial run as Portland powered past visiting Los Angeles.

The teams are now tied with 41-40 records and one game to go, but the Trail Blazers own the tiebreaker, which would leave them eighth in the Western Conference. Donovan Clingan added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Portland.

Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 24 points and eight rebounds. Brook Lopez knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to 21 points.

Magic 127, Bulls 103

Franz Wagner scored 25 points and Jamal Cain added 20 as visiting Orlando stretched its winning streak to five games with a victory against Chicago.

Orlando remained alive for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference — which would allow the Magic to avoid the play-in tournament — with one game remaining in the regular season. Goga Bitadze posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Magic. Paolo Banchero scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists.

Chicago suffered its eighth loss in 10 games despite 23 points from Tre Jones. The Bulls have lost 50 games for the first time since 2018-19. Matas Buzelis had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls before leaving in the third quarter with a sprained right ankle.

Spurs 139, Mavericks 120

Victor Wembanyama showed that he is playoff ready after an injury by amassing 40 points and 13 rebounds as host San Antonio pummeled Dallas.

Wembanyama, back after missing a game and a half with a left rib contusion, reached the 65-game requirement for league postseason awards. De’Aaron Fox added 18 points and 10 assists for the Spurs, who have won 14 of their past 15 games.

Cooper Flagg put up 33 points and Max Christie had 16 for the Mavericks, who have lost three in a row.

Celtics 144, Pelicans 118

Boston tied an NBA record by making 29 3-point field goals and secured the No. 2 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating visiting New Orleans.

Boston took 59 3-point shots but didn’t put up a shot on its final possession. The record for made 3-pointers in a game is also shared by the 2020 Milwaukee Bucks, the 2024 Celtics and the 2026 Memphis Grizzlies.

The Celtics received 24 points from Sam Hauser, who was 8 of 12 from 3-point territory. Jaylen Brown scored 23 and Payton Pritchard finished with 21 points and 10 assists. Jeremiah Fears led New Orleans with 36.

Timberwolves 136, Rockets 132

Donte DiVincenzo scored 11 of his 18 points to spark a fourth-quarter rally, and Terrence Shannon Jr. chipped in 23 points off the bench as short-handed Minnesota snapped host Houston’s eight-game winning streak.

Anthony Edwards scored 22 points in his return after missing 10 of the previous 12 games. The Timberwolves, playing without starters Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert and sixth man Naz Reid, shot 57.3% from the floor, including 15 of 30 from behind the arc.

Amen Thompson scored a career-high 41 points to pace the Rockets and added nine rebounds and seven assists. Kevin Durant posted 33 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Alperen Sengun totaled 22 points and eight assists.

BASEBALL

MLB ROUNDUP: DODGERS WALK OFF RANGERS ON MAX MUNCY’S 3RD HR OF NIGHT

Max Muncy hit a two-out solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to cap his second career three-homer game, giving the host Los Angeles Dodgers an 8-7 walk-off win over the Texas Rangers.

Andy Pages homered and collected his fourth three-hit game of the season for the Dodgers, who overcame the first blown save of the season from closer Edwin Diaz (1-0). Los Angeles won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Rangers pulled even in the ninth on a two-run homer from Evan Carter and an RBI single from Ezequiel Duran with two outs. That set the stage for Muncy’s winner off Jacob Latz (0-1).

Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford also went deep for Texas, which had a three-game winning streak end.

Padres 5, Rockies 2

Gavin Sheets launched a game-ending three-run homer and San Diego walked off visiting Colorado for the second straight game.

Sheets crushed a 434-foot bomb to right-center off Juan Mejia (0-2), his second homer of the game and season, to clinch the Padres’ sixth win in seven games. Mason Miller (1-0) struck out the side in the ninth for the second straight night. The Rockies had evened the score with a pair of two-out runs in the eighth inning.

Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano tossed six innings, allowing four hits and two runs. San Diego’s Walker Buehler needed only 68 pitches to fire six scoreless innings, permitting three hits.

Pirates 2, Cubs 0

Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run home run, Carmen Mlodzinski threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings and visiting Pittsburgh beat Chicago.

Cubs starter Shota Imanaga held Pittsburgh hitless in his six-inning stint. The third pitch from Cubs reliever Caleb Thielbar (1-1) in the seventh was singled to right by Ryan O’Hearn. Reynolds blasted the next pitch for his third homer of the season.

Pittsburgh’s Mason Montgomery (1-0) struck out two batters in relief. Dennis Santana pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save. Ian Happ produced two hits and Carson Kelly had a single and three walks for the Cubs.

Diamondbacks 5, Phillies 4

Ketel Marte and James McCann each drove in two runs as visiting Arizona beat Philadelphia for its fifth win in six games.

Michael Soroka (3-0) allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10. Paul Sewald worked around a two-out triple in the ninth to register his fourth save.

Brandon Marsh hit a three-run home run for the Phillies, who have lost three in a row. Jesus Luzardo (1-2) was charged with five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Tigers 2, Marlins 0

Keider Montero tossed six strong innings and three relievers completed the shutout as host Detroit snapped a five-game losing streak by blanking Miami.

Montero (1-1) allowed just two hits and a walk while recording seven strikeouts. Kenley Jansen recorded his second save of the season and the 478th of his career, tying him with Lee Smith for third place on the all-time list.

Javier Baez homered, Spencer Torkelson drove in the other run with a single and Colt Keith had two hits for the Tigers. Marlins starter Chris Paddack (0-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Braves 11, Guardians 5

Ronald Acuna Jr., Matt Olson and Michael Harris II each hit home runs in the sixth inning as Atlanta picked up a win over visiting Cleveland.

Atlanta sent 10 batters to the plate, pounded out seven hits and scored six runs in the decisive sixth inning. Reliever Tyler Kinley (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless sixth inning.

Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi (0-2) threw 5 1/3 innings and yielded seven hits and, five runs (four earned).

Nationals 7, Brewers 3

James Wood highlighted a four-run ninth inning with a run-scoring double as Washington came from behind to beat host Milwaukee.

The Nationals used three bunts and a hit by pitch off Brewers closer Trevor Megill (0-2) to spark an unusual winning rally. PJ Poulin (1-0) tossed a perfect eighth inning. Nationals starter Jake Irvin gave up two hits and three runs in five innings.

The Brewers announced Chad Patrick as their starter, but switched up and used Aaron Ashby as an opener. Ashby gave up two runs in the first but settled down to go 2 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and the two runs.

Angels 10, Reds 2

Jorge Soler belted a grand slam and Jack Kochanowicz allowed one run over seven innings, fueling visiting Los Angeles to a victory over Cincinnati.

Zach Neto launched a two-run homer, Josh Lowe also went deep and Yoan Moncada had an RBI single while reaching base four times for the Angels, who ended a two-game skid. Kochanowicz (2-0) permitted just two hits.

Elly De La Cruz belted a solo homer for the Reds, who lost their third straight game. Chase Burns (1-1) yielded five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Blue Jays 10, Twins 4

Brandon Valenzuela hit his first career home run, a two-run blast that capped a five-run fourth inning, and Toronto defeated visiting Minnesota.

Daulton Varsho added a solo shot and a double for the Blue Jays while Vladimir Guerrero had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI. Davis Schneider contributed two hits and two RBIs as Toronto won its second straight after losing six in a row.

Ryan Jeffers hit a three-run home run and added two singles for the Twins, who had won their four previous games. Brooks Lee added a solo shot.

Athletics 4, Mets 0

A quintet of pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout for the visiting Athletics, who continued their surge with a win over New York.

Shea Langeliers laced a third-inning run-scoring single before Jeff McNeil (single) and Denzel Clarke (two-run single) added RBI hits in the ninth for the A’s, who have posted two straight shutouts and have won four of their past five. Reliever Jack Perkins (1-0) got the win after throwing 2 1/3 innings.

Clay Holmes (2-1) gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings for the Mets, exiting due to a left hamstring injury.

Royals 2, White Sox 0

Kris Bubic allowed two hits and struck out a career-high 11 over seven stellar shutout innings, and Carter Jensen clubbed a solo home run as Kansas City snapped a three-game skid with a victory over visiting Chicago.

Bubic (2-1) didn’t yield a hit until Lenyn Sosa led off the fifth inning with a double. The other hit Bubic surrendered came via Derek Hill’s single to open the sixth, as he went on to match the longest outing of his career.

White Sox starter Davis Martin (2-1) gave up two runs and seven hits without a walk over seven innings.

Cardinals 3, Red Sox 2

Dustin May pitched six solid innings as St. Louis edged visiting Boston.

Jordan Walker went 2-for-4 with a run for the Cardinals, who won thir third straight game. Jose Fermin knocked in the decisive run in the fifth inning. May (1-2), who entered the game with a 15.95 ERA through two starts, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-4 and Trevor Story drove in a run and stole home for the Red Sox, whose two-game winning streak ended.

Rays 5, Yankees 3

Yandy Diaz started an early comeback with a two-run homer to spoil Luis Gil’s season debut and spark Tampa Bay to a victory over New York in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Seeking more production, Rays manager Kevin Cash moved Diaz to the cleanup spot and elevated Chandler Simpson to the leadoff position. Simpson drove in two runs. Steven Matz (3-0) threw five innings of two-run ball, and Bryan Baker escaped a ninth-inning jam for his second save.

Gil (0-1) needed 88 pitches to get through his four-inning stint, allowing three runs. Ben Rice homered for the Yankees, who lost their third game in a row.

Mariners 9, Astros 6

Randy Arozarena hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth inning and Seattle snapped a five-game skid with a victory against visiting Houston.

Mariners starter Emerson Hancock (2-1) overcame one shaky frame to pitch five innings and allow three runs. Andres Munoz worked around two walks in the ninth for his first save.

Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run homer for the Astros, who lost their fifth in a row. Reliever Ryan Weiss (0-2) yielded Arozarena’s blast.

Giants 6, Orioles 3

Willy Adames, Casey Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee combined for four runs, five RBIs and seven extra-base hits as San Francisco won at Baltimore.

Adames and Lee each provided a homer, double and two RBIs while Schmitt drilled three doubles, scored twice and knocked in a run. Landen Roupp (2-1) permitted one run on five hits over six innings.

Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer, his third long ball in the past four games, and Adley Rutschman went 3-for-5 with two doubles for the Orioles, whose three-game winning streak ended. Shane Baz (0-1) gave up three runs in five innings.

BLUE BLOODS DENVER, WISCONSIN CLASH IN FROZEN FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The first-ever Frozen Four played in Las Vegas culminates with historic blue bloods Denver and Wisconsin meeting for a national championship on Saturday.

The competitors have taken different paths to the ultimate game. Denver (28-11-3) carries 12-game winning and 16-game unbeaten streaks to be within one victory of its record 11th all-time title. Wisconsin (24-12-2) seeks to complete a Cinderella run to its first crown in two decades after receiving a proverbial second life in the NCAA tournament following a Big Ten quarterfinal loss.

In their semifinal round games on Thursday, both teams bent but didn’t break.

The Pioneers, who recently won it all in both 2022 and 2024, were outshot 52-26 but topped No. 1 overall seed Michigan 4-3 on senior captain and defenseman Kent Anderson’s double-overtime goal. It was the third-longest game in Frozen Four history.

“It means everything to play in this national championship game,” Anderson said. “It’s our goal at the beginning of the year. It’s what we work for and what we play for at Denver.”

Though the Pioneers boast a Frozen Four-high 15 NHL draft picks, this time of year in hockey is all about unsung heroes. Anderson is certainly one of those, having scored just one previous goal this season and five in his first 148 career games.

“Really proud of him and how he’s led this team,” Denver coach David Carle said. “Not many had him on the ‘BucciOT Challenge.’ No matter.”

Meanwhile, the Badgers got goals from Simon Tassy and Ryan Botterill 27 seconds apart in the first period and went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill — including 1:57 of 5-on-3 time in the second — before holding off a late North Dakota surge in a 2-1 win.

“It doesn’t have to be (a) Mona Lisa,” Wisconsin coach Mike Hastings said. “You just have to find a way to make sure you’re living for another day.”

The Badgers entered Thursday with the second-worst penalty kill in the country (70.9%), but they stepped up at the most crucial time against a high-octane offense.

“Guys took a lot of effort on blocking shots, getting in lanes,” said defenseman Ben Dexheimer, who propelled Wisconsin to its first Frozen Four since 2010 with an overtime goal for a 4-3 win over regional top seed Michigan State on March 28 in Worcester, Mass.

Denver is at its best on the back end, having entered the Frozen Four tied for the fourth-best scoring defense in the country (2.10 goals per game).

On that note, the best penalty killers and key reasons why both teams advanced were the goaltenders: Wisconsin’s Daniel Hauser and Denver’s Johnny Hicks — both older freshmen with past Canadian major junior experience.

Hauser made 21 saves in Thursday’s game, posting his eighth win in nine starts.

However, no goalie on the planet is on a hotter run than Hicks, who is an incredible 15-0-1 with a .957 save percentage since taking over the net from Quentin Miller in December. He stopped a season-high 49 shots against Michigan, staying in the game after taking a third-period hit on a drive to the net.

“He’s a battler. He’s unfazed. He was our best player,” Carle said. “Made the saves you’re supposed to. Made a lot that he wasn’t supposed to.”

The two teams had one previous national championship meeting in Boston in 1973, with Wisconsin winning 4-2. That was the first of six Badgers titles, the most recent coming in 2006.

CUP SERIES RETURNS TO ACTION AT BRISTOL’S FOOD CITY 500

After a lackluster initial short-track race at Martinsville on March 29 and then a weekend off for Easter, it’s time to get back to racing.

There are few better places to restart the NASCAR Cup Series season than the Last Great Colosseum, Bristol Motor Speedway.

Rested and refreshed after two weeks without turning left, drivers get back at it with Sunday’s Food City 500 (FS1, 3 p.m. ET), a scheduled 500-lapper that will cover 266.5 miles at the 0.533-mile layout in Tennessee.

While on hiatus, the Cup Series was upstaged last weekend as the other two national series headed to North Carolina’s sand hills and Rockingham Speedway, where 19-year-old William Sawalich earned his first win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.

“The Rock,” which hosted Cup races from 1966 to 2004, continues its gradual return to NASCAR racing. Rockingham may be following the same trail carved by North Wilkesboro Speedway, especially if more sellouts like last weekend are in store.

Rockingham has suffered from being in an oversaturated market. Atlanta, Darlington, Charlotte, North Wilkesboro, Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond — all within half-day treks — are all vying for the same “best bang for your buck” racing experience that lures the fans, whose spending dollars can only stretch across so many races.

The track may be tracing North Wilkesboro’s pathway for rebirth: Start with a touring series like CARS, get major national support series from NASCAR and maybe seek a future exhibition like the Clash or the All-Star Race. That approach worked for the Wilkes County track, which will hold its first Cup points race in three decades on July 19.

With NASCAR bringing a new tire to BMS this weekend, the focus will be on wear and management, especially after the March 2024 race when rubber was coming apart and the drivers up front who finished 1-2-3 at Thunder Valley were seasoned veterans: winner Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski.

The trio was better at tire management and weathered nine cautions that put the slipping and sliding field under yellow for 98 laps and created 54 lead changes — a NASCAR short-track record.

Drivers also made 3,589 green-flag passes and 61 under green for the lead, both NASCAR records.

It was a messy day for the field as “tire degradation” became the buzz words on pit road. Many worried about the race’s completion because Goodyear was running out of rubber in the garage.

The grip itself was becoming as unreliable as a long-range weather forecast in the Volunteer State’s mountainous region, which is expecting its warmest day this week with Sunday’s 83-degree projection.

“The objective at our Bristol tire test in November was to develop a setup that is less temperature dependent at laying rubber down,” said Goodyear’s Racing Director of the Americas Justin Fantozzi. “We heard loudly from the teams about variations in weather between practice and race conditions, and the need for a tire solution to address this. The track took rubber in November under rather cold temperatures.”

The new package will be just another variable for NASCAR and the field to try and conquer at the sport’s most demanding bullring, where Kyle Larson is the defending Food City 500 champion

PACERS BASKETBALL

Back home for their penultimate game of the 2025-26 season, the shorthanded Pacers hung tough with the 76ers on Friday night on the second night of a back-to-back.

But Indiana (18-62) ultimately fell short in a 103-91 loss to Philadelphia (43-37).

Jarace Walker led four Pacers in double figures with 17 points in the loss, going 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Quenton Jackson added 16 points and six assists, while Micah Potter recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pacers had just 10 players available on Friday, with eight players sidelined due to injury. Forward Kobe Brown was back on the court after sitting out Thursday’s win in Brooklyn with a lumbar sprain.

Sixers All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 32 points, while former Pacer Paul George added 21.

The Pacers hit three early 3-pointers while jumping out to a 13-5 lead. But the Sixers closed the first quarter with a 14-3 run to take a 28-21 advantage into the second quarter.

Philadelphia extended its lead with six straight points to open the ensuing frame before a basket from Walker and three from Potter righted the ship for Indiana.

Rookie two-way guard Taelon Peter provided a nice spark off the bench in the second quarter, tallying nine points in the frame to keep the Blue & Gold within striking distance. Back-to-back threes from Potter and Walker pulled the Pacers within five with 1:30 remaining in the first half, but a dunk by George in the closing seconds made it a 58-51 game at the intermission.

The Pacers continued their rally at the start of the second half. Ethan Thompson knocked down a three and Walker followed with two more. Potter’s putback slam tied the game at 62 just 2:33 into the third quarter.

But the Sixers surged back ahead with eight unanswered points. A few minutes later, after Indiana had pulled back within four, George scored seven points to trigger a 9-2 run that pushed the margin back to double digits.

Maxey added 12 points in the third quarter as Philadelphia took an 89-77 lead into the fourth.

But the Pacers continued to fight, opening the fourth quarter with a 10-2 — capped by an alley-oop dunk in transition by Obi Toppin — to make it 91-87.

That would be the closest they would get, however, as they went scoreless for the next 6:47. The Sixers reeled off 10 unanswered points over that span to seal the win.

Thompson finished with 15 points in the loss for Indiana. Jay Huff narrowly missed out on a double-double off the bench, tallying eight points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks.

VJ Edgecombe tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists for Philadelphia. Andre Drummond had 10 points and 16 rebounds off the bench.

The Pacers have one game remaining in the season. They host Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

“I thought our guys did a tremendous job of competing tonight,” Pacers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce said Friday night. “We knew they needed this game in a major way, but we also knew we had a great fanbase out there. It was important for our guys to show up, compete, make them earn whatever they got. We’ll do the exact same thing on Sunday.”

Inside the Numbers

Potter recorded his second double-double in as many nights and his third in his last four games. He has six double-doubles in 46 games this season with the Pacers, after registering just one double-double in 54 games prior to this season.

Thompson has scored in double figures in three straight games and four of his last six contests.

Huff’s five blocks matched his season high. He previously swatted five shots on Dec. 5 in Chicago and on March 8 in Portland.

After the Pacers outscored Brooklyn 80-56 in the paint on Thursday, it was an entirely different story on Friday, as the 76ers won the points in the paint battle, 64-28.

The Pacers shot just 37.5 percent from the field, but they did outscore Philadelphia by 27 points from 3-point range. Indiana was 14-for-50 (28 percent) from 3-point range, while the 76ers were just 5-for-29 (17.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

INDIANS BASEBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – Esmerlyn Valdez extended his on-base streak to 13 games and Ronny Simon pushed his hitting streak to seven games as the Indianapolis Indians lost to the Louisville Bats, 8-2, on Friday night at Victory Field.

Five Bats (7-6) runs came across in the first inning, all with two outs. After Blake Dunn walked to begin the contest, Edwin Arroyo lined into a double play as the second batter of the game. Two more batters reached and a wild pitch by Antwone Kelly (L, 0-3) put them both in scoring position. Things unraveled for the Indians, with a grounder skipping through Tyler Callihan for an error that plated both runners. Following a walk to Francisco Urbaez, Michael Toglia hit a three-run homer to break the game open, 5-0.

The Indians (3-10) added a run in the bottom of the first inning with Simon hitting a leadoff single. Simon then stole second base and later advanced to third on a single from Valdez. Endy Rodríguez drove in Simon on a double to the wall to cut the deficit, 5-1.

The early run-scoring went silent until Louisville tallied two more runs in the eighth frame on a two-run double from Will Banfield. Each team added one more run in the ninth inning to finish with an 8-2 score.

Kelly lasted just 0.2 innings, allowing five runs (0er), with Carson Fulmer (3.1ip), Mike Clevinger (1.0ip) and Cam Sanders (1.0ip) each posting scoreless outings to follow. Louisville starter Darren McCaughan (W, 2-1) tossed 5.0 innings of one-run ball to set up Louisville for the win.

The Indians continue this week’s six-game series with Louisville on Saturday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Thomas Harrington (0-1, 3.12) is set to take the mound for Indy while LHP Brandon Leibrandt (0-1, 10.57) is slated for the Bats.

INDY FUEL

CORALVILLE– The Indy Fuel kicked off their weekend in Iowa on Friday night. In the first of three games against the last place team this weekend, Indy took home the 2-1 come from behind win.

1ST PERIOD

Iowa’s Grant Ahcan took the game’s first penalty at 9:21. He sat for high sticking but the Heartlanders were able to kill it off.

That was the only penalty of the period. Despite outshooting Iowa, 11-3, Indy did not score and they headed into the second frame at 0-0.

2ND PERIOD

Jack Collins headed to the penalty box at 2:56 after taking a tripping penalty, but Indy’s Matt Petgrave sat for interference at 4:24. This forced some 4-on-4 time before giving Iowa a power play chance. They did not score.

Iowa’s Matthew Argentina took a slashing penalty at 8:11, giving the Fuel another power play chance, but they could not score.

Next, Indy took back-to-back penalties from Eric Martin and Owen Robinson for tripping and holding the stick respectively.

This resulted in a power play goal from Iowa’s Ahcan to put the Heartlanders up 1-0 late in the second period. That is how the period ended, with Indy down despite outshooting Iowa 26-16 through two.

3RD PERIOD

At 5:33, Matt Petgrave scored for Indy to tie the game up, 1-1.

Iowa’s Cameron Butler took a hooking penalty at 9:33, which put the Fuel on the power play in the third period. Cody Laskosky capitalized on it with a goal assisted by Jesse Tucker and Marcus Joughin. This gave Indy their first lead of the game, 2-1.

With about a minute left in regulation, Iowa pulled their goaltender in favor of the extra attacker but it did not pay off. Time expired before anyone else scored, and Indy took the win 2-1 on Friday night.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow night before closing out the three-game set on Sunday.

In the 90th minute, he denied former teammate Albert Dikwa with a diving save on a volley from inside the area to earn his second “Save of the Week” nomination this season.

The Carmel native and Butler product helped lead Pittsburgh to the 2025 title, winning the USL Championship MVP and Prinx Playoff MVP after allowing no goals in 450 minutes in four playoff games. Dick led the league with 15 clean sheets in 2025, ranking second in the league in saves (78) and goals against avg. (0.78).

His total of 14 shutouts in the 2024 regular-season is tied for third on the all-time list, as the Hounds conceded the fewest goals in the Championship.

Indy Eleven signs Somali International Mohamed Omar

Indy Eleven signed midfielder Mohamed Omar on Thu. Apr. 9, pending league and federation approval.

The 6’3 Omar started all four matches for the Somalia National Team in its 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Oct. at Algeria and vs. Mozambique and in March vs. Guinea and at Botswana. Omar played eight matches for the Ocean Stars in 2025, scoring his first Senior Team international goal in a friendly at Bahrain in Nov.

The 27-year-old Omar played the past two seasons in the USL Championship for San Antonio FC, scoring his first professional goal against Colorado Springs Switchbacks last April. In 2025, he started nine of 14 matches, recording five shots, two chances created, and 23 fouls won in 961 minutes.

The Notre Dame grad had 10 fouls won, two shots, and two chances created for SAFC in 2024 in 384 minutes.

Omar made 44 total appearances for the HFX Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League in 2022 and 2023. He was an assistant captain in 2023, leading the CPL in passing accuracy (89.4) and helping his team reach the playoffs.

The Toronto, Ontario, native was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids, 23rd overall.

Omar served as a captain for Notre Dame’s 2021 team that earned the second NCAA College Cup appearance in school history, falling to eventual champion Clemson in penalty kicks in the semifinal. He started 23 matches that season, recording season bests in goals (4), assists (1), and points (9), scoring a goal in the NCAA Round of 16 win over Wake Forest. He played as a central midfielder for a defense that recorded six consecutive clean sheets in the postseason, including four straight to win the ACC Championship.

He trained with the U20 Canadian National Team in 2018 as a 19-year-old.

He grew up playing with Indy Eleven midfielder Noble Okello at Toronto FC Academy.

Omar attended prep school at Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass., where he also played basketball and ran track.

Rendon & Mesanvi Creating Chances

Indy Eleven has recorded strong attacking displays this season with an 8.32 Expected Goals mark through four games as returnee Bruno Rendón and new arrival Loïc Mesanvi making an impact.

“Bruno has had a great start to the season,” said Indy Coach Sean McAuley. “You can see what Loïc brings us as a relatively unknown player that we got a hold of. I’ve known him for a few years, and he’s got really good quality, and he can threaten the opponent with the pace. Once he gets past people, he picks the pass out.”

Mesanvi has made an impact off the dribble and in the final third, completing 3.38 progressive carries and 31.72 touches in the final third per 90 minutes. As with other parts of Indy’s attack, the potential to succeed has been on display.

Coach Sean McAuley

Head coach Sean McAuley earned the USLC “Coach of the Month” in May 2024 and he was nominated for USLC Midseason “Coach of the Year” after leading his team to a 12-match unbeaten streak in a two-month span from April 17-June 15.

The Sheffield, England, native led Indy Eleven to the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals with four straight victories, including a 2-1 triumph at MLS-side Atlanta United on July 9.

In 2025, Indy Eleven continued its run of Cup success under McAuley with a 4-0-3 record in cup play. The Boys in Blue won their U.S. Open Cup Third Round match vs. Miami FC on Hayden’s White’s stoppage-time goal from Cam Lindley. In the Round of 32, Indy Eleven played MLS Supporters Shield winner Philadelphia Union to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, before falling in penalty kicks.

In the franchise’s first appearance in the USL Cup in 2025, the Boys in Blue won their group with an undefeated record that included a victory in PK’s (7-6) vs. Birmingham Legion FC and a 2-1 triumph over eventual USL-C finalist FC Tulsa.

McAuley is in his third season in Indy after previously serving as interim head coach/assistant at MLS-side Minnesota United FC. McAuley helped Minnesota to playoff appearances in his first three seasons, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2020.

In 2015, he hoisted the MLS Cup with the Portland Timbers.

McAuley began his playing career with Manchester United and played for Portland Timbers and the Scottish U-21 National Team.

INDIANA BASEBALL

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In what was one of the most complete performances of the season, the Indiana Baseball team (14-19, 6-10 B1G) rolled to a commanding 11-3 win over Maryland (15-19, 2-11 B1G) on Friday (April 10) evening at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. The Hoosiers are now 4-2 on Friday evenings in conference play.

IU’s offense has started to head in the right direction over the last few weeks. A massive sixth inning, that featured three of its five home runs in the game, helped break the contest open in the right direction. Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie smashed a two-strike, two-out, three-run home run to give IU an 8-1 lead. Redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts followed that with a solo shot to put the game on ice.

Graduate student left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck continues to get the team off to a great start in weekend openers. He spun a six-inning, one-run gem to earn his fourth victory of the year. It was his fourth quality start in six starts during conference play. Neubeck has 39 strikeouts to just nine walks in Big Ten action this season.

Late runs in the ninth inning allowed graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold to get the final seven outs of the game with little trouble. He returned to his fantastic form with three strikeouts amidst a hitless performance on the mound.

IU will have a chance to win the series on Saturday (April 11) afternoon in College Park. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Reagan Rivera will take the mound for the Hoosiers. Head coach Jeff Mercer will hope his offense continues to swing hot bats in conference play. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

PURDUE BASEBALL

EVANSTON, Ill. – Cole Van Assen and Thomas Howard teamed up for seven zeros on the mound and Purdue Baseball scored seven times with two outs in the ninth inning, defeating Northwestern 11-3 in Friday’s series opener.

The Boilermakers (23-10, 10-6 Big Ten) scored six or more runs in an inning for the ninth time this season, all of the extended rallies coming since March 10 as they’ve registered a 14-5 record during that stretch. Purdue has won seven of its last eight games against Northwestern (13-16-1, 5-8 Big Ten) dating back to a rubber game win at Alexander Field in April 2023.

Nine consecutive Boilermakers reached base safely with two outs in the ninth inning. Avery Moore ignited the rally with a long nine-pitch at-bat, eventually drawing the first of Purdue’s five walks in the frame. Dylan Drake followed with a two-run homer on the first pitch of his at-bat, connecting for his fifth long ball of the season and the Boilers’ first in a week’s time.

Van Assen and Howard teamed up to lead Purdue to a series-opening victory for the fifth time this season. Van Assen pitched into the sixth inning for a third straight start and sixth time this year, surrendering two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. Howard retired the final nine batters of the game in order, needing just five pitches for a 1-2-3 ninth inning after the long break while Purdue was batting around. The Boilers were set to go to closer Jake Kramer for the bottom of the ninth before blowing the game open.

Purdue scored twice on a squeeze-bunt single from Quincy Malbrough in a three-run fourth inning. CJ Richmond connected for a game-tying RBI double to the wall in right field. Moments later, Richmond scored from second on Malbrough’s bunt. Jackson Bessette got an excellent jump from third on Malbrough’s bunt, which was handled by starting pitcher Jake Rifenburg. After initially wanting to flip the ball to the catcher for a play at the plate, Rifenburg threw late to first base and then fell near the lefthanded batter’s box. He ended up catching the throw home from the second baseman as NU tried in vain to cut down Richmond on the back side of the play.

STREAKS EXTENDED

• Sam Flores – 12-game hit; 8-game hit in Big Ten play

• Aaron Manias – 11-game on-base; 5-game hit; 8-game on-base in Big Ten play

• Avery Moore – 8-game on-base; 8-game on-base in Big Ten play

• Dylan Drake – 7-game on-base; 6-game on-base in Big Ten play

• Eli Anderson – 5-game hit; 6-game hit in Big Ten play

Eli Anderson connected for doubles in the first and ninth innings, scoring the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly from Sam Flores. The Northwestern left fielder lost Anderson’s fly ball in the setting sun in the top of the ninth. The double was the third of three straight run-scoring hits after Malbrough and Westin Boyle delivered RBI singles.

Boyle and Drake teamed up for the top defensive play of the game, an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to erase a two-out walk in the fifth inning. Drake also made a nifty diving catch in short right field as Jackson Freeman hit into the shift.

The series at Northwestern continues Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

FRIDAY NOTABLES

• Thomas Howard lowered his ERA to 2.20 in 32 2/3 innings while earning his second save of the season. He has worked at least three innings of relief in four of his 15 appearances.

IU INDY SOFTBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior outfielder Paige McPhearson went 6-for-7 and knocked in eight runs as the IU Indianapolis softball team split a Horizon League doubleheader with Oakland at the IU Indy Softball Complex on Friday (Apr. 10). The Jaguars rallied from behind to win game one 8-4 before falling in the nightcap, 9-5. Senior Alexa Holman earned the win in the circle with a complete game as the Jaguars pounded out 25 hits in the two games.

“I just felt like I was seeing the ball well and I felt like I could put it in play and was just doing what I had to do,” McPhearson said of her big day.

Game #1 – IU Indy 8, Oakland 4

McPhearson went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers in the game one win, including a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the sixth as part of a six-run rally. After drilling a solo shot in the fifth, McPherson lined a bullet on a full count just over the fence in right to give the Jaguars a 7-4 lead. The Jags played add-on later in the inning when Molly Kable scampered home from third after having reached on an infield hit and moved up on Kennedy Cowan’s single.

Oakland struck first in the first inning when Maggie Murphy drove a homer over the centerfield fence, only to see the Jaguars tie the game in the bottom half on Kable’s RBI single. Both starters settled in from there until Oakland took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, including a bases loaded hit by pitch to push a run home. McPhearson countered by driving the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning well beyond the fence in right for her fourth homer of the season. Oakland extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth before the Jaguars sent 10 batters to the dish in the bottom half.

Holman started the rally with a solid single, followed by Kinsey Pfeiffer’s pinch hit double to center. Mae Munson followed with a bunt single, turning the lineup over to Adeline Blackwell. Blackwell followed with a solid single to make it 4-3 before McPhearson unloaded on the go-ahead grand slam.

“I saw the ball coming inside and I said, ‘oh boy, that’s it right there’,” McPhearson said. “I just took a big hack at it.”

Holman allowed four runs and struck out two in the complete game victory while Kenna Bommarito took the loss for Oakland, yielding eight runs and striking out six in five innings of work. Blackwell went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot while Kable was 2-for-2 and a walk. Holman and Munson also had multi-hit games in the opener.

Game #2 – Oakland 9, IU Indy 5

The Jaguars tried similar come-from-behind antics in game two, but fell short after initially trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning. The Jags only damage in the first three innings came on a McPhearson RBI single in the third, scoring Piper Stephens from second.

Oakland hung a three spot on IU Indy starter Clara Phariss in the fourth inning, starting the rally with a bunt single and then sacrificing the runner to second. After a single put runners on the corners, the Golden Grizzlies pulled off a double steal to sneak a run home. Later, Murphy smashed a two-run single back up the middle to make it 5-1.

The Jaguars took advantage of some wildness in the circle to get even in the bottom half, beginning with walks to Callie Dickerson and Holman to start the inning. Stephens followed with an infield hit to load the bases before Munson reached on a bloop to left field that resulted in a force out at third base. Blackwell followed with an RBI double and McPhearson ripped a two-run single to right to tie the score.

Oakland tacked on a run in the fifth and another in the sixth on Murphy’s RBI double.

McPhearson went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in while Stephens was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game two. Phariss was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs over four innings before yielding to Dickerson in relief. EVANSVILLE BASEBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  The University of Evansville baseball team won in dramatic fashion once again on Friday night, walking off Southern Illinois 6-5 in the 10th inning to begin the weekend. The walk-off was Evansville’s third walk-off win in their last six games at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

The Aces were down to their final strike twice, the first time coming in the ninth inning. With the Aces trailing 4-3 with two outs, Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois) took a full count pitch and hammered it to center field, driving in the tying run to force extra innings. In the 10th inning, the Aces once again were down to their final strike, trailing 5-4. Ryan Seddon (Joliet, Ill./St. Laurence) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a ground ball to third base, where it was bobbled and thrown up the line, allowing Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) to score the winning run from second base.

Evansville starter Max Hansmann (Elmhurst, Ill./York) allowed four runs in his first two innings of work but settled in, getting through six innings with a gusty 118-pitch effort while matching a career-high with seven strikeouts. After three and a third innings from Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario/Frontier CC), Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) induced a double play with the bases loaded in the 10th to escape the jam and earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Southern Illinois came out of the gates swinging, tallying four runs on seven hits over the first two innings of play to take a 4-0 lead.

Reeder got the Aces on the board in the third, launching a solo home run to left field. The home run marked his third consecutive game leaving the yard.

The Aces were not done in the inning, however, as Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) reached on a dropped third strike and Haire singled before a double steal put runners on second and third. Longmeier cashed in with an infield single, driving in Magill, before Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) dropped a single into the left field to make it a 4-3 game and extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Hansmann settled into a groove in the fourth, using a double play to face the minimum before capping a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout. The right-hander completed his day in the sixth, stranding a pair of base runners with a strikeout to keep it a one-run game.

Byberg took over in the seventh and found himself in a jam, with Salukis at second and third with nobody out. However, he found a way to escape, keeping the score at 4-3.

After two more scoreless innings from Byberg, the Aces went to the bottom of the ninth looking to extend the game. McConnell started the inning with a single up the middle, but a fielder’s choice and a flyout brought the Aces to their final out. Reeder stepped in and worked the count full before taking a slider to center field at 107 mph, tying the game at four.

SIU scored their first run since the second inning in the top of the 10th, taking advantage of two walks, an HBP, and an error to plate a run. However, Roberts entered with the bases loaded and escaped the jam, as a lineout to second caught the Saluki baserunner too far off the bag for a double play.

Looking for another rally in the bottom of the 10th, Magill did what he does best and found a way on base, wearing his 16th HBP of the season to put the leadoff runner on. Haire walked in the next at-bat to put two on with nobody out, but a strikeout and a groundout to the catcher put runners on second and third with two outs. In stepped Seddon, who grounded a two-strike pitch to third. With Seddon hustling down the line, the Saluki third baseman bobbled the ball and threw the ball up the line and past the first baseman, allowing Haire to score from second as the Aces took a 6-5 win.

VALPO MEN’S TENNIS

After 36 years of coaching tennis including seven leading the Valparaiso University tennis program, Bob Modesto has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2026 spring season.

“I am forever a Valpo fan; I love Valpo,” Modesto said. “This is a retirement; I’m not going anywhere else. I went to Purdue, my daughter went to Mizzou, my son-in-law went to Illinois, but there’s no place like Valpo. I may be retiring from coaching, but I will continue to be Valpo’s No. 1 fan.”

Since he took over the program in July 2019, Modesto has elevated Valpo tennis to new heights.

“Bob Modesto has been an exemplary Valpo citizen throughout his time leading our tennis program,” Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Laurel Hosmer said. “I’m forever grateful for his service to our student-athletes and his deep love for our institution. Bob embodies the ethos of Valparaiso University in his commitment to build lives for good through the opportunities the tennis program affords and the many lives he’s impacted for the better during his tenure here at Valpo. His infectious personality and positive demeanor have helped him uplift those around him and enhanced the experience for his student-athletes. I would like to thank Bob for his hard work and wish him well in his upcoming retirement.”

Valpo Athletics will celebrate Modesto’s retirement on Saturday, April 18 at the Beacon & Bell Cafe located at Harre Union. The celebration will take place following the team’s home match against Drake. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be available.

“I want to express my appreciation for Laurel, who has been phenomenal in her position,” Modesto said. “She’s been a godsend for me and she has been responsible for some of the highlights of my life. [Sport administrator] Candy [Jessen] and all of the athletics staff have been nothing but supportive. I am also so thankful and have so much gratitude toward Mark LaBarbera, who hired me, and Charles Small, who was a terrific athletic director.”

Bob The Builder

When Modesto took over leadership of the Valpo tennis program, he inherited a team that had won a total of 28 dual matches in the 12 seasons prior to his arrival, averaging 2.3 victories per season during that time and winning no more than five matches in a season in the previous 12 years.

Under his leadership, Modesto built the program into one that experienced success, winning 56 dual matches in his seven seasons including four seasons that featured at least 10 victories. Valpo has twice finished with 11 wins under Modesto, the team’s highest total since 2006, and has 10 victories with four regular-season matches remaining this year.

With help from his tutelage, Valpo players won 30 Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards (17 Singles Players of the Week, 13 Doubles Teams of the Week). Valpo experienced four MVC individual championships during Modesto’s time leading the program and had five all-conference honorees including the 2022 MVC Player of the Year.

Although Modesto inherited a program that had not experienced much recent success in terms of wins and losses, the cupboard was not bare. He inherited something that was arguably the most important component of the program’s surge – the Czerwonka sisters. Claire Czerwonka (Stablein) was entering her junior year when Modesto replaced Tammy Cecchini as head coach, while her younger sister Olivia Czerwonka was entering her freshman season.

“I committed under Tammy, and Bob started my freshman year,” Olivia said. “His daughter had played on the team, and Claire had a good friendship with Meg. I was walking in blind in a way. Once I came on campus, my family and I met with him at Founders. I was grateful to know that he was going to be my coach. It’s tough going in as a freshman and you don’t know what you’re going to get. He was such a warm, welcoming person. Looking back seven years later, I didn’t realize that Bob and I’s relationship would bloom into what it did. Recently, I told Bob that if you’re friends with someone for seven years, you’ll be friends with them forever. I know our relationship will last a lifetime.”

The Czerwonka sisters experienced a conference championship together, winning the 2021 Flight 1 Doubles crown at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, hosted on Valpo’s home courts. That same day, Olivia captured the MVC Flight 2 Singles title. Moira Silva (2022, Flight 2 Singles) and the tandem of Sydney Stone and Lacey Tanner (2024, Flight 2 Doubles) would go on to win conference championships under Modesto as well.

With Modesto playing a key role, Valpo hosted the MVC Individual Championships in Fall 2021 and hosted the MVC Team Championship in Spring 2025. In addition, the Valpo Tennis Complex outdoor courts were resurfaced during his time leading the program, enhancing what he said are some of the best tennis facilities in The Valley.

Another banner moment of Modesto’s coaching career was helping Olivia win the 2022 MVC Player of the Year Award.

“Olivia winning the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year award is not only a highlight of my time here, but it’s a highlight of my life,” Modesto said. “I knew about it beforehand, but we kept it from her. I shared it with her parents and we decided not to let her know until it occurred. When we knew ahead of time and we saw her reaction, it was a terrific day. The conference championships are also something I’ll remember forever. Those are great days and you can look back on those tremendous moments and say, ‘Life is good.'”

The program record book has received a workout during Modesto’s time in charge of Valpo tennis, as four of the top 10 players in career singles victories have come during his tenure, and each of the top three players in career doubles wins achieved their place in the record book under Modesto. Current senior Moira Silva ranks third in program history with 63 career singles wins and is tied for third with 55 career doubles victories.

“I feel really lucky to have had Bob as my coach,” Silva said. “He has not only been there for me on the court, but off the court as well. He is someone who will advocate for you in every aspect of your life. He’s given me the opportunity to play at this school and helped develop my game and my success. He’s allowed me to build relationships with other people he’s recruited on the team and people from other sports. He pushes me to become better every single day and makes sure I’m working toward the right things.”

Bob The Student

Modesto got the chance to experience Valpo in a whole new way when he made the decision to pursue his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the institution. Set to graduate this May, Modesto’s experience in the classroom has made his appreciation for Valpo even stronger.

“Finishing the MBA program has been tremendous for me as a person, and also tremendous for me as a coach,” Modesto said. “It’s made me a better coach in that I can certainly appreciate how difficult it is to be a student-athlete today. It’s a tremendous amount of work juggling between being a good student and a good athlete. It is more difficult than I could have imagined. I have such admiration for our players for that reason. For example, English is Andrea Delgado’s second language, and she gets all A’s and carries 18 credit hours while leaving her heart out on the court. She’s an inspiration to me, and she’s an inspiration to everyone around her. Those are the kinds of athletes we have at Valpo.”

Already a popular figure in Valpo’s athletic department, Modesto’s pursuit of his MBA allowed him to forge new bonds across campus, including those with professors Tiffany Kolba, Jamie Stangel, Paul Rowe, David Rolling, Kirsten Bullock, Renee Liu, Alex Chen, Sedefka Beck, Elizabeth Gingerich and advisor Deb Singer.

“They are truly phenomenal,” Modesto said. “A big part of what makes Valpo great is the professors. The professors here can be described in two words – They care. They care about their students, they care about the success of the students and they want everyone in the program to succeed. I would describe Valpo professors and staff in this way – when we go to the grocery store, we see four types of people. There are people who if you see them there, you will go back another day. There are people who if you see them, you will go in, but you go by the fruit if they’re by the bread. There are people who if you see them, you’ll try to find them in the store. And then there are people from Valpo, where if you see them, you will pay for their groceries.”

Stangel fondly recalls her interactions teaching Modesto in master’s level sport law.

“Before the class started, Bob came into my office, and we looked over the textbook and talked about what the case briefs look like,” Stangel said. “He had so many questions because he wanted to do everything the right way. How long should papers be? What’s the format? You could tell he was nervous because he hadn’t been to school in a while. He was so eager to know what we were going to talk about and make sure he did things the right way. Before both of our exams, he came into my office and talked to me about what he should study, which is atypical for master’s students, and you could tell he was really interested in learning. Everybody gets their graduate degrees for different reasons. It was so refreshing to see someone who was learning for the sake of learning, not really for the sake of a grade or not even necessarily for the degree. He was just different from most of the students that we see in such a good way.”

It comes as perhaps no surprise that Modesto was studious in the classroom, as he led a team that won the Valparaiso University Team Academic Award in three straight years in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Six of his athletes have earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors, including 2022 MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Claire Czerwonka.

“Since Bob went back for his MBA, I’ve heard multiple times from athletes on other teams, other coaches and his professors that Bob is an amazing person,” Silva said. “It’s funny that there are more athletes from other sports who know Bob than athletes who know specific people on the team personally. It’s really valuable and unique.”

Bob The Person

Modesto is certainly a coach, but he isn’t Coach Modesto.

“He doesn’t want to be a scary person, so he said, ‘You guys can just call me Bob. That’s it,'” Silva said. “There’s just so much to Bob. One of his most admirable characteristics is that every single person that he meets gets along with him.”

While Modesto emphasizes the importance of working hard and competing with heart, he also stresses the importance of having fun. When Valpo tennis traveled on the road, the student-athletes and coaches created memories that will last a lifetime.

“We’ve shared so many experiences together – my favorite was when he kissed a camel on a safari ride in Missouri,” Olivia said.

“My freshman year, we went through a drive thru zoo kind of thing and he kissed a camel while feeding them,” Silva said.

“I did kiss a camel; I know the team enjoyed that,” Modesto said.

VALPO BASEBALL

Three scoreless, hitless innings from opener Adam Guazzo (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) set the tone, and the offense scored early and often as the Valparaiso University baseball team prevailed 9-2 in Friday’s series opener with Bradley at Emory G. Bauer Field. The Beacons started a weekend in winning fashion for the first time this season, improved to 2-1 in the last three games including a Big Ten victory and moved to within one win of matching last season’s overall win total.

How It Happened

The Beacons befriended the single tally in the early going, scoring precisely once in each of the first three frames. Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) grounded out to drive in a run in the first, Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) had a shallow sacrifice fly in the second and Louie Kegerreis (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) doubled home a run in the third.

Guazzo pitched three shutout innings, retiring the first eight Bradley batters of the game before issuing a two-out walk in the third. He did not yield a hit during his start.

Righty Justin Bultemeier (Decatur, Ind. / Adams Central) relieved Guazzo in the fourth and worked around a leadoff double as Bradley stranded a pair.

Valpo scored for the fourth consecutive inning, this time putting up its first crooked number of the day. An inning that started with two outs and nobody on base saw Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) rip a run-scoring single before another run came around to score on a wild pitch, building the Valpo lead to 5-0.

Bultemeier flipped another goose egg in the fifth before the Braves finally got on the board with a solo shot to lead off the sixth, making it 6-1. Bultemeier stayed on for a fourth inning of work in the seventh and retired the side in order.

The Braves had their best chance to get back in the game in the top of the eighth. Spencer Boynton’s (Tampa, Fla. / Seffner Christian) day on the mound began with a double, hit batter and walk, and he faced a bases-loaded, no-out jam. However, the righty wiggled out of trouble, recording back-to-back strikeouts before a line drive to third ended the inning with the five-run lead intact.

Valpo put it away in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four times including a hustle, infield single by Schembra that plated a pair. Kegerreis also ripped an RBI single as part of the prosperous inning.

Bradley picked up one but nothing more in the top of the ninth, and Boynton finished out the series-opening victory.

Inside the Game

Valpo started a weekend with a victory for the first time this season, as the Beacons were 0-8 in the opening game of each weekend this season prior to Friday’s victory. Dating back to last season, Valpo had dropped 16 straight weekend openers (15 straight series openers if you exclude the weekend where Valpo played three different opponents this season instead of a traditional weekend series) dating back to March 21, 2025, an 8-3 win at Indiana State.

Valpo outhit Bradley 11-6, led by Sullivan’s 3-for-3 day. He matched a season high with three knocks, equaling his previous best from March 22 at Murray State.

Redshirt senior Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) had a pair of hits and scored a season-high three runs.

Kegerreis had his second multi-hit game of the season and first since Feb. 20 at Wofford.

Bultemeier covered a season-high four innings and allowed one run on three hits, while Guazzo had his sixth scoreless outing of the season and his first outing in which he did not yield a hit.

Valpo and Bradley are now an even 12-12 against one another in 24 matchups since Valpo joined the Missouri Valley Conference.

Up Next

The Beacons (9-20, 2-5 MVC) will continue the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. by hosting Bradley at Emory G. Bauer Field. The game will air on ESPN+.

MARIAN BASEBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian baseball team played to a Friday split in their return to MU Ballpark, as the Knights suffered a 9-7 loss in game one of the twin bill against Bethel before rebounding to win game two 7-0. Each of Marian’s starting pitchers logged double-digit strikeouts on Friday, as the team moved to 27-11 overall on the season and 20-6 in Crossroads League play.

Game One | Marian 7-9 Bethel

Marian scored early and often on Friday, bringing home five runs in the first two innings of the series to take a commanding lead on the Pilots. The first run of the game came home on Landon Sarkey’s first inning RBI double, while Zach Bale singled home the outfielder with his two-out single to cap a two-run frame. In the second, Calvin Miller and Ty Jarvis started off the inning with consecutive walks, putting runners in scoring position for Tate Bender, who delivered an RBI single. Judah Hennessy courtesy ran for Jarvis and stole home in the inning, while Bender later stole home on a double steal, giving Marian a 5-0 lead.

While the offense got off to a hot start, so too did the pitching, as Evan Cooke was dealing early. Cooke struck out the side in the first inning as he stranded a lead-off single, and repeated the formula in the second after allowing a two-out hit and walk. The junior continued the strikeout quest in the third inning as he fanned two batters and caught another looking, recording all nine outs in the game on strikes. Bethel managed to put runners on in the third and continued the trend in the fourth as three consecutive singles brought home the Pilots’ first run of the day. Another RBI single after a strikeout would make the game a 5-2 affair, where the score held after Cooke allowed his defense to turn a double play and end the fourth inning.

Cooke again struck out the side in the fifth inning, and in the home half gained the two runs back on the board from Hector Corona, who hammered a two-run home run to right field to give Marian a 7-2 lead. The game seemed to belong to Marian, but in the sixth, the strong play from Cooke faded, as the junior gave up two hits while hitting a batter in the first three men faced in the frame. The starter would get an out, but the pop-up moved Cooke to the bench, as Brady Armstrong came out of the bullpen.

Armstrong struggled to find the zone early, giving up three consecutive runs, allowing each of his inherited batters from Cooke to score. The Pilots would continue their scoring run as a wild pitch brought a man home, and a sacrifice fly tied the game, as the lead was succumbed in the tied 7-7 game.

Marian’s offense would struggle to get in gear after seeing the lead expire, relying on the defense to get holds over the final three frames. Aiden Kerr did just that as he took the mound in the seventh, retiring the side in order to carry the game, but in the eighth inning, the freshman reliever saw a two-out walk and double burn the team, as Bethel took a 9-7 lead on Anthony Cimini’s base hit. Marian went down in order in the eighth, and in the ninth, attempted a rally with two outs as River Pecina and Hector Corona singled, but the game soon ended as Zach Bale grounded into a fielder’s choice, seeing the Knights fall 9-7.

Tate Bender, River Pecina, and Hector Corona each had two base hits in the loss, with Corona carrying a team-high two RBI with his home run. Cooke retired a career-high 13 batters on strikes in his no-decision, allowing nine hits and five total runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Kerr (1-2) would suffer the loss in the game, pitching three relief innings with two runs and three hits allowed.

Game Two | Marian 7-0 Bethel

Marian continued to ride their strong starting pitching in game two, as Chris Adams followed Cooke’s big outing with one of his own, stranding a walk in the first inning as he picked up two strikeouts. Adams then struck out the side in the second inning as he held a pair of walks on base, and in the home half, his battery-mate gave the Knights a 1-0 lead, as Aiden Kerr blasted a solo home run to center.

Adams grinded through the third inning as his fourth strikeout of the game helped strand two runners, while in the fourth, the fifth-year senior was tested as two singles and a walk loaded the bases. The senior stayed strong on the hill, picking up consecutive strikeouts to get one out away from stranding the bases. With two outs away, Adams forced a fly out to Nathan Pinarski in right field, ending the inning with a 1-0 lead.

Marian rode the momentum from the flyout into the bottom of the fourth, staying disciplined at the plate as the team drew three consecutive walks to lead off the inning. Johnny Roeder followed the 12 balls with a first-pitch double after a mound visit, roping home two runs to extend Marian’s lead. Elijah Kelly followed up with a two-run single, burning the infield to give the Knights a 5-0 lead. Kelly would later come in to score on an error, and Bradyen Coffey brought home Nathan Pinarski on a sacrifice fly, giving Marian a 7-0 lead.

Adams returned in the fifth inning and worked a quick inning, extending his outing as he notched a strikeout in a scoreless frame. The senior would strike out two more in the sixth, carrying the shutout into the seventh inning. In the final frame, Cecil Prather came on in relief to close out the win, getting a strikeout as part of a five-batter scoreless frame, locking down the win with a foul out to Kerr behind the plate, ending the 7-0 victory.

Chris Adams (6-2) picked up the win after 6.0 scoreless innings, combining with Cecil Prather for their first shutout of the season. Adams struck out 11 batters in the win, and allowed just four hits in his outing. At the plate, Marian had five hits, with Roeder and Kerr notching the team’s extra base hits with their respective double and home run. Roeder and Kelly each had a team-best two RBI in the win.

The Knights and Pilots will complete the series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on Marian’s Alumni Day weekend.

“SPORTS EXTRA”

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

APRIL 11

1907    “Boy, they sure called me lots of names when I tried on those shin guards. They must have been a good idea at that, though, because they tell me catchers still wear them.” – ROGER BRESNAHAN, reflecting on being the first major league catcher to wear shin guards. On Opening Day, playing against the Phillies at the Polo Grounds, Giants catcher Roger Bresnahan becomes the first player to wear shin guards in a major league game. The future Hall of Fame receiver’s innovative protective device, fastened with straps and hooks, was made of leather.

1907    The Giants lose their home opener to the Phillies when some Polo Grounds fans flood onto the field, disrupting the game in the top of the ninth inning. After warning the growing crowd of over a thousand patrons, who continue to pour onto the field, home plate umpire Bill Klem decides enough is enough, forfeiting the game to the visiting team, 9-0.

1912    Rube Marquard begins a nineteen-game consecutive winning streak by beating the Dodgers, 18-3, in a game featuring 13 ground-rule doubles hit by the visitors because of the overflow crowd in the outfield and along the foul lines. The future Hall of Fame southpaw’s streak will end in July when the Giants lose to Chicago at the West Side Grounds, 7-2.

1912    Redland Field, the steel and concrete ballpark named to match the team’s moniker and hue, debuts with the hometown Reds beating the Cubs, 10-6. In 1934, the Cincinnati ballpark will be known as Crosley Field, honoring the team owner, Powel Crosley.

1928    Forty-year-old veteran Ty Cobb and 41-year-old Tris Speaker, who spent last season with the Senators, start in the outfield on Opening Day for the A’s, batting second and third, respectively. The 8-3 loss to the Yankees at Philadelphia’s Shibe Park marks the first time the future Hall of Famer players have played as teammates in a game.

1932    The Cardinals trade future Hall of Famer Chick Hafey to the Reds for outfielder/first baseman Harvey Hendrick, right-hander Benny Frey, and cash. The former Redbird outfielder led the National League in hitting last season, batting .349 for the World Series champs.

1947    In a preseason 14-6 exhibition victory over the Yankees at Ebbets Field, Jackie Robinson, the black to play with a major league club since 1884, joins the Dodgers wearing uniform number 42. The 28-year-old first baseman, whose contract had been purchased two days ago from Montreal, is warmly greeted by the Brooklyn fans and the players.

1954    The Yankees trade two minor leaguers and rookie right-hander Mel Wright to the Cardinals for 38-year-old right-fielder Enos Slaughter. The future Hall of Fame outfielder will hit only .239 in 79 games during his first tenure with the Bronx Bombers, but Bill Virdon, one of the prospects dealt to the Redbirds, will be named the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 1956.

1961    The upstart Angels, playing their first game in franchise history, defeat a strong Orioles team at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, 7-2. Ted Kluszewski homers twice, and Eli Grba tosses a complete game for Los Angeles.

1961    In his major league debut, Red Sox rookie Carl Yastrzemski singles off Kansas City’s Ray Herbert in the team’s 5-2 Opening Day loss at Fenway Park. The 21-year-old left fielder from Bridgehampton, New York, will amass 3,419 hits during his 23-year Hall of Fame career with Boston.

1961    On Opening Day, the flag is hung at half-staff at Crosley Field to honor the memory of late owner Powel Crosley, Jr., who passed away two weeks earlier. The Reds, the eventual National League Champions, get off to a good start by beating Chicago, 7-1.

1961    Robin Roberts, in his twelfth-straight Opening Day start, is tagged with the loss when the Phillies lose to the Dodgers in the LA Memorial Coliseum, 6-2. The right-hander’s effort ties Grover Cleveland Alexander’s National League record for consecutive season openers.

1962    After being rained out the previous night and some players getting stuck in the Chase Hotel’s elevator, the Mets make their National League debut in St. Louis, losing to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, 11-4. The defeat will be the first of a record-setting 120 losses the New York expansion team will suffer this season.

1963    Don Leppert, who went deep on the first pitch he saw in the major leagues playing for Pittsburgh, hits three homers in the Senators’ 8-0 victory over Boston at D.C. Stadium. The catcher’s solo shot in the fourth inning, three-run blast two frames later, and bases-empty round-tripper in the eighth will account for twenty percent of his four-year career total of 15 round-trippers.

1964    A small plane privately scatters the ashes of former Houston right-hander Jim Umbricht over Colt Stadium, his home ballpark with the Colt .45s for the past two seasons. The popular 33-year-old reliever, the only pitcher to post a winning record during the expansion team’s first two seasons, lost his well-publicized battle to a malignant melanoma three days ago.

1966    On Opening Day at D.C. Stadium, twenty years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, Emmett Ashford becomes the first black major league umpire, working third base in the Tigers’ 5-2 defeat of the hometown Senators. The dapper Californian arbitrator will become well-known for his flashy style, which includes sprinting around the infield after foul balls, karate chop strike calls, and pirouetting while dusting off home plate.

1968    After dropping the season opener, Detroit dramatically gets the first win of their 103 victories of their World Champion campaign. Leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, Gates Brown, pinch-hitting for Jon Warden, hits a walk-off home run off right-hander John Wyatt to beat the Red Sox at Tiger Stadium, 4-3.

1969    The Pilots, a winner on Opening Day in Los Angeles against the Angels, are victorious in their first home game in franchise history, blanking the White Sox, 7-0, at Seattle’s Sicks Stadium. Gary Bell, called ‘Ding Dong’ by his teammates, manages to keep Chicago from scoring, although the right-hander yields nine hits and walks four batters en route to the complete-game victory.

1971    Jerry Grote hits a walk-off homer in the 11th inning off Wayne Granger at Shea Stadium. The New York catcher’s game-ending round-tripper accounts for the only run scored in the Mets’ 1-0 victory over the Reds.

1985    Cal Ripken, nursing a sprained left ankle suffered while covering second base on a pickoff play in yesterday’s game against the Rangers, is ordered by the doctor not to play in today’s game against the Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Orioles shortstop’s streak of consecutive games would have ended in its infancy at 444 games without the Annapolis exhibition contest.

1990    Mark Langston, tossing seven innings in his Angel debut, and Mike Witt, author of a perfect game in 1984, combine to pitch a 1-0 Opening Day no-hitter against the Mariners at Anaheim Stadium. Dante Bichette’s seventh-inning bases-loaded walk accounts for the game’s only run.

1993    When Brewer catcher Dave Nilsson catches for Graeme Lloyd, they become the first all-Australian battery in major league history. The 23-year-old backstop hails from Brisbane, Queensland, with his rookie batterymate calling Geelong, Victoria, home.

1994    In the inaugural major league game at The Ballpark in Arlington, Holly Minter, posing for a picture, is seriously injured when she slips and falls 30 feet from the upper deck in right field to the lower section of the new $189-million stadium. Reportedly, a security guard was en route to ask the 26-year-old Ranger fan to move away from the railing.

1994    The Rangers play their first major league game in The Ballpark in Arlington, losing to Milwaukee, 4-3. Texas leadoff hitter David Hulse gets the stadium’s first hit, a first-frame single, and Dave Nilsson hits the first home run in the $189-million facility, a solo shot leading off the bottom of the fifth inning.

1996    Greg Maddux’s major league record of road victories ends at 18 with a 2-1 loss to the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. The Braves right-hander was 18-0 with an ERA under one run per game in 20 regular-season road starts, dating back to July 1994.

1997    To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the integration of baseball, Sharon Robinson, Jackie’s daughter, and Pumpsie Green each threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park. In 1959, Green became the first black to appear in a Red Sox uniform, making Boston the last major league team to integrate.

2000    On a cold and snowy afternoon in front of nearly 40,000 fans, the Tigers beat the Mariners, 5-2., in the first major league game at Comerica Park. Giving up two runs in six innings, Brian Moehler gets the ballpark’s first victory after being the winning pitcher in the final contest at Tiger Stadium last season.

2003    Although Dale Petroskey still would cancel the ‘Bull Durham celebration due to the anti-war criticism espoused by Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, the Hall of Fame president wishes he had called the co-stars rather than just sending a letter. The decision created a firestorm, with Cooperstown receiving over 5000 emails and noted author Roger Kahn canceling his planned August appearance to speak about his new book “October Men,” a work chronicling the 1978 World Champion Yankee team, as a protest.

2003    In the first of its ‘home’ games at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Expos rout David Cone and the Mets, 10-0. The Montreal franchise, now owned by major league baseball, will play 22 games in the Commonwealth this season while exploring possible new venues for the poorly attended Canadian team.

2006    Bob Sheppard misses his first Yankee Stadium home opener since 1951 after sustaining a hip injury at his home yesterday. The long-time public address announcer will return to the microphone during the team’s next homestand.

2006    At the home opener at RFK Stadium before the hometown team’s 7-1 loss to the Mets, Dick Cheney, wearing a red-and-blue Nationals jacket, becomes the eighth sitting vice president to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. After the veep hears a chorus of boos, he bounces the pitch in front of home plate when throwing the ball from the front of the pitching mound.

2006    Jeromy Burnitz, Ryan Doumit, Jack Wilson, and Craig Wilson hit solo home runs in the Pirates’ 7-6 victory over the Dodgers at PNC Park. The quartet of round-trippers blasted by the Buc sluggers is each player’s second homer of the season. (Ed. Note: Our thanks to L. Cole for suggesting this entry – LP)

2008    At Minute Maid Park, the Marlins set a club record, blasting six home runs en route to a 10-6 win against the Astros. Jeremy Hermida hit a pair of round-trippers, and teammates Mike Jacobs, Hanley Ramirez, Jorge Cantu, and Mike Rabelo contributed solo homers in Florida’s fourth straight victory, matching the team’s longest winning streak last season.

2010    Arizona scores a team-record 13 runs in the fourth inning of a 15-6 victory over Pittsburgh at Chase Field. The infamous frame features eight hits, including a trio of home runs hit by Chris Young, Kelly Johnson, and starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, which also ties the Diamondbacks’ mark for a regular-season game.

2010    Mike Leake becomes the first pitcher since Ariel Prieto in 1995 to make his big league debut without spending a day in the minor leagues. The 22-year-old Reds’ right-handed starter gives up four hits in 6.2 innings, getting a no-decision in the Reds’ eventual 3-1 victory over Chicago at the Great American Ball Park.

2016    Rookie first baseman Tyler White, who set an Astro record for total hits in the first five games played with the team, is named the American League Player of the Week. The 25-year-old thirty-third-round pick out of Western Carolina batted .556, scored three runs, blasted three home runs, and collected nine RBIs to cop the prestigious honor in the first week of his major league career.

2022    Taylor Rogers earns the save when he pitches a scoreless ninth inning in the Padres’ 4-2 victory over the Giants, and his twin brother, Tyler, gives up the decisive run in the seventh to get tagged with the San Francisco loss. The 31-year-old siblings, who exchanged lineup cards at home plate before the Oracle Park contest, become the tenth set of twins to play in the majors and the fifth to play in the same game.

APRIL 12

1906    At Brooklyn’s Washington Park, Boston Beaneater rookie Johnny Bates becomes the first modern player to homer in his first major league at-bat. The 23-year-old outfielder connects off Harry McIntire in the top of the second inning in the teams 2-0 Opening Day victory over the Superbas.

1909    The 61-year history of Shibe Park begins with the A’s defeating the Red Sox, 8-1. The Philadelphia stadium, renamed to honor Connie Mack in 1953, is the first concrete and steel ballpark in major league history.

1916    On Opening Day, the Giants begin the season with a 5-4 loss to the Phillies at the Baker Bowl. The game marks the debut of New York’s new purple plaid uniforms, fortunately, a trend that will last only a year.

1927    Giants’ first baseman Bill Terry becomes the first major leaguer to hit a grand slam on Opening Day. The New York infielder’s four-run round-tripper comes off Phillies’ right-hander Hal Carlson in the fifth inning of the team’s 15-7 victory at Baker Bowl.

1931    Former Cubs pilot Joe McCarthy debuts as the Yankee manager, beating Boston at the Bronx ballpark, 6-3. The future Hall of Fame manager, the team’s all-time leader in managerial wins with 1460, guides the club to eight pennants and seven World Championships during his 16-year tenure in the Bronx.

1935    The Yankees name Lou Gehrig the fifth captain in team history. The 33-year-old first baseman joins Hal Chase (1912), Roger Peckinpaugh (1914-1921), Babe Ruth (six days in 1922), and Everett Scott (1922-1925) to receive the honor as a player.

1953    During an exhibition game in Brooklyn, the Ebbets Field PA announcer informs the crowd, including the new dad, when he approaches home plate to bat, “Mickey doesn’t know it yet, but he has just become the father of an eight-pound, twelve-ounce baby boy.” Mickey Mantle Jr., whose middle name is Elven in memory of the Yankee slugger’s recently deceased dad, is the first of four children, all sons, with his wife, Merlyn.

1955    At Municipal Stadium, the recently arrived Athletics beat the Tigers, 6-2, in their first game in Kansas City. At first, the Missouri fans will warmly receive the franchise’s shift from Philadelphia as the A’s draw 1,393,054 patrons to the ballpark in their first season, second only to the Yankees in the American League.

1955    Pinch-hitting for Braves’ southpaw Warren Spahn, Chuck Tanner, who becomes better known for his managerial skills, hits a home run on the first pitch he sees in the major leagues. The 26-year-old outfielder’s eighth-inning round-tripper off Gerry Staley ties the score in Milwaukee’s eventual 4-2 victory over Cincinnati at County Stadium.

1955    In front of a standing-room crowd of 32,147 at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium, 70-year-old former US president Harry Truman throws out the ceremonial first pitch as a southpaw before the A’s take the field in their first home game in the City of Fountains. The enthusiastic fans support the transplanted team from Philadelphia with a large civic parade before the newcomers take a 6-2 decision from the Tigers.

1960    In the first game ever played at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, after Vice President Richard Nixon throws out the ceremonial first pitch, Giants’ starter Sam Jones three-hits the Cardinals, 3-1. During the third inning, the umpires noticed that both foul poles were positioned well inside fair territory, necessitating improvising a new ground rule to address the problem.

1960    The Indians trade Norm Cash to the Tigers in exchange for Steve Demeter. The Tribe, who acquired Cash in the off-season from the White Sox, will regret the move, giving away a future American League batting champ, who will hit 373 homers during his 15 years in Detroit, in exchange for a third baseman who plays only four games with the franchise.

1962    In front of 40,000 fans, the expansion Mets are honored with a ticker-tape parade up lower Broadway. The players, wearing their brand new home uniforms, broadcasters, and other officials ride in open convertibles, throwing plastic baseballs to the enthusiastic crowd as they drive by.

1962    Making his major league debut, Pete Richert emerges from the bullpen and strikes out the first six batters he faces, a major league record. The rookie southpaw fans four in the third inning in LA’s 11-7 comeback victory over the Reds at Dodger Stadium.

1965    The A’s mascot, Charlie-O the Mule, chosen to spotlight the role Missouri mules played in the Allies’ victory in World War I by lugging ammunition and supplies through the mud and snow of France, makes his debut on Opening Night at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium. In a pregame ceremony, Warren Hearnes, the governor of Missouri, presents the 1,400-pound animal to team owner Charlie O. Finley, who rides his namesake much to the delight of the 18,109 fans attending the game against the Tigers.

1965    Joe Torre hits two home runs in Milwaukee’s 4-2 Opening Day victory at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Next season on the same date, the Braves catcher will do it again, joining teammate Eddie Mathews as the only major leaguers to hit two round-trippers twice in games played on Opening Day.

1965    At the Astrodome, the Astros drop the first regular-season indoor game to the Phillies, 2-0. Houston third baseman Bob Aspromonte, who collected the first Houston hit in Colt Stadium in 1962, also gets the first hit in the Astrodome, and Dick Allen of the Phillies blasts the first National League homer in the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World.’

1966    Atlanta’s first-ever major league game goes overtime when Pittsburgh beats the hometown Braves, 3-2. With the game deadlocked at 1-1 in the top of the thirteenth inning, starter Tony Cloninger, who will go the distance, gives up a two-run homer to Willie Stargell.

1966    On Opening Day, Jim Lonborg’s 13th-inning balk plates Bob Johnson with the deciding run in Baltimore’s 5-4 victory. The Red Sox reliever’s miscue on the mound occurs with two outs and the bases loaded at Fenway Park.

1967    On Opening Day at Boston’s Fenway Park, the Red Sox attract only 8,324 fans to watch the team beat Chicago, 5-4. The eventual American League champs finished last season in ninth place with a 72-90 record.

1970    Phil Roof, followed by Hank Aaron and Felipe Alou, becomes the first of only three major leaguers to play for the Milwaukee Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers, scoring three runs in the team’s 16-2 rout of Chicago at White Sox Park. In 1960, the catcher made his major league debut with the Braves, appearing in three games before being traded to the Angels in 1964.

1972    The first players’ strike in baseball history ends when the owners agree to add salary arbitration to the Collective Bargaining Agreement and a $500,000 increase in pension fund payments. The owners will cancel the 86 games missed during the 13-day strike, refusing to compensate the players for their lost time during the work stoppage.

1976    Rain postpones the game against the Padres at Dodger Stadium, marking only the second rainout in the 14-year history of the ballpark. The washout ends a streak that started in April 1967, covering a span of 724 straight contests, with subsequent postponements coming much sooner when inclement weather cancels two consecutive home dates in September.

1977    On Opening Day, fans attending the Comiskey Park contest receive a foam ball with the idea of having the first pitch of the White Sox season thrown by everybody in the stands. The concept is the brainchild of Rudie Schaffer, team owner Bill Veeck’s right-hand man, also credited with the Bat Day promotion and the innovative exploding scoreboard.

Opening Day ‘First Pitch’

1980    En route to an 18-1 rout of the Red Sox, the Brewers become the third team this century to hit grand slams in the same inning when Cecil Cooper and Don Money go deep with the bases loaded in the second frame of the County Stadium contest. Twins teammates Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew accomplished the feat against Cleveland in 1962, and Denis Menke and Jim Wynn did it for the Astros in 1969 against the Mets.

1986    In a humiliating 9–8 extra-inning loss against the Phillies, the Mets blow a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, thanks, in part, to Keith Hernandez’s error allowing the leadoff batter to reach base, opening the floodgates to Philadelphia’s comeback. Six years later, the New York first baseman’s Veterans Stadium miscue (albeit placed on the wrong date and season in a different venue) becomes the background of a conspiracy theory detailed in an hour-long Seinfeld episode, The Boyfriend.

1988    Frank Robinson replaces Cal Ripken Sr. as the Orioles’ manager after the team gets off to a 0-6 start. The new skipper, who has previously managed the Indians and Giants, will be winless in his first 15 games in the Baltimore dugout.

1988    Bobby Witt ties an American League record, committing four balks in the Rangers’ 4-1 loss in Detroit. The major league record for the most balks in one game is five, established in 1963 by Braves’ right-hander Bob Shaw, which included three in the third inning of the team’s 7-5 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

1990    Brett Butler walks five times in the Giants’ 13-4 win over the Braves at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The speedy outfielder will score four times after being issued a free pass.

1992    In a doubleheader at Cleveland, the Indians are no-hit by Red Sox hurler Matt Young in the first game but win, 2-1, and in the nightcap, the Tribe gets only two safeties off Roger Clemens to set a major league record for fewest hits (2) in a twin bill.

1993    Barry Bonds, who signed a six-year, $43 million deal as a free agent, the richest contract in baseball history, delights the crowd of 56,689 at Candlestick Park by homering in his first at-bat in front of the hometown fans. The clean-up hitter’s second-inning drive to deep right field off Chris Hammond proves to be the difference in the Giants’ 4-3 extra-inning victory over Florida.

1994    Scott Cooper hits for the cycle, the first Red Sox player since Mike Greenwell to accomplish the feat in 1988, driving in five runs to help the team rout the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, 22-11. The third baseman’s fifth-inning triple is the result of being thrown out at the plate trying to stretch the three-bagger into an inside-the-park home run.

2001    The Blue Jays postpone the game against the Royals when SkyDome’s retractable dome gets jammed during a routine test opening, sending chunks of the roof, some as big as eight feet by six feet, crashing onto the field below. The gaping hole in the dome is visible from the outside of the ballpark, making the damage easy to spot by the city’s commuters on a nearby expressway.

2001    The combat-ready Padres, wearing camouflage jerseys and green caps, finally win the battle against the Giants after five consecutive losses to the black and orange, 8-3. San Diego donned the uniforms to honor the area’s significant military population.

2002    In front of 48,244 loud and enthusiastic fans at the Metrodome, their first sellout since winning the World Series in 1991, the Twins beat the Tigers in the home opener, 4-2. The MLB had considered eliminating the Minnesota franchise under its contraction plan proposed during the off-season.

2002    Barry Bonds, with his 574th career round-tripper, passes former Twin first baseman Harmon Killebrew on the all-time home run list. The Giants’ left fielder hit his milestone homer, which ranks him sixth overall, in the first inning off Nelson Figueroa in the Giants’ 3-2 victory over Milwaukee.

2003    Fenway’s Green Monster, the left-field wall in the major league’s smallest park, has a new look. In the place of a net that the team used to collect home run balls that cleared the wall, the fans now occupy the space, sitting 310 feet away and 40 feet above the field, as they watch Red Sox right-hander Pedro Martinez give up ten runs in 4.1 innings in a 13-6 loss to the Orioles.

2003    With a 5-2 victory over the Indians at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field, the Royals set a franchise record for victories at the start of the season, winning their ninth consecutive game since Opening Day. In 1977, Kansas City won 16 straight from August 31st through September 15th for the overall team’s mark for consecutive wins.

2004    The Phillies unveiled a ten-foot bronze statue of Richie Ashburn at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies’ new home. Zenos Frudakis’s work of the five-time All-Star is located behind centerfield in Ashburn Alley, in the team’s Walk of Fame.

2004    At the Giants’ home opener at SBC Park, the passing of the torch occurs both literally and figuratively when Barry Bonds hit his 660th career homer to tie his godfather, Willie Mays, for third on the all-time home run list. The 72-year-old Hall of Famer Mays greets his godson at home plate with a torch studded with $18,000 of diamonds forming the numbers 660, 25 (Barry’s number), and 1 (the number of round-trippers needed to move ahead).

2004    At a Safeco Field news conference, Seattle announces that the team has signed free agent Nelson Cruz to a four-year, $58 million deal. The Mariners acquired the right-handed slugging outfielder, who led the big leagues with 40 home runs last season while playing for the Orioles, to bat behind Robinson Cano, giving the switch-hitting second baseman more protection in the lineup.

2006

Twenty-two-year-old college senior Jeffrey Maier hits a third-inning two-bagger against Bates to become the all-time career hits leader at Wesleyan, with 169, surpassing the 2003 mark set by Bill Robinson. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound third baseman gained national notoriety a decade ago as a 12-year-old fan when he leaned over the Yankee Stadium fence to snag Derek Jeter’s fly ball ‘homer,’ which prevented Orioles outfielder Tony Tarasco from catching the ball during the 1996 ALCS.

2008    The Charleston RiverDogs, a Class-A minor league affiliate of the Yankees, commemorate the first visit of Benedict XVI to the United States with a Pope on a Rope Night promotion. The first 1,000 fans attending the South Atlantic League game against Rome at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park receive a soap figurine bearing a likeness of the Holy Father.

2009    A pair of tickets for the Mets home opener at Citi Field, with a face value of $525 apiece, is auctioned off for $7,500 on eBay. The ducats belonged to Bernard Madoff, who is in jail after pleading guilty last month to defrauding investors, including Mets owner Fred Wilpon, in a $65 billion Ponzi scheme.

2009    With runners taking off from first and second base, Pirates’ shortstop Jack Wilson turns Reds third baseman Edwin Encarnacion’s soft liner into a triple play. The triple killing is the Bucs’ first since 1993 and the team’s first on the road in 41 years.

2010    With 9,129 fans in attendance, the smallest crowd in the 19-year history of the ballpark, the Orioles lose to Tampa Bay at Camden Yards, 5-1. The club, off to a 1-6 start in the new season, has scored only three runs in their last three games.

2010    On an unusually warm spring day, the hometown Twins beat Boston, 5-2, in the first regular-season game at Target Field. Minnesota DH Jason Kubel hits the ballpark’s first home run, a seventh-inning shot into the right-field seats.

2011    The Rakuten Eagles, unable to use their stadium due to the extensive damage caused by last month’s massive earthquake and tsunami, beat the Chiba Lotte Marines at QVC Marine Field, 6-4, in Japan’s Pacific League opener. The crowd of 22,525 attending the game is not disturbed after feeling an aftershock at the ballpark caused by an earthquake in Chiba earlier in the day.

2012    Paulo Orlando becomes the first major leaguer to have each of his first three career hits be a triple when he bangs out his second three-bagger in the Royals’ 9-2 victory over Los Angeles at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Three days ago, the 29-year-old rookie outfielder also legged out a three-bag base hit off White Sox left-hander John Danks after being walked in his big-league debut at the plate.

2022    Alyssa Nakken replaces Antoan Richardson after the Giants’ first base coach was ejected during the team’s eventual 13-2 victory over San Diego at Oracle Park, becoming the first woman on-field coach in MLB history. The assistant coach for manager Gabe Kapler, a San Francisco’s front office member since 2014, is greeted with a handshake from Padres’ first baseman Eric Hosmer.
