NFL

NFL SET TO BEGIN HIRING AND TRAINING REPLACEMENT OFFICIALS, AP SOURCES SAY

PHOENIX (AP) — The NFL is moving forward with plans to begin hiring and training replacement officials in the next several weeks because negotiations with the referees’ union have been unsuccessful, two people with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.

Both people spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the conversations are private.

The league and the NFL Referees Association have been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement since the summer of 2024. The current CBA expires on May 31.

The NFL has increased its offer to a 6.45% annual growth rate in compensation over a six-year labor deal, but the NFLRA wants 10% plus $2.5 million for marketing fees, the people said.

NFLRA executive director Scott Green told The Associated Press on Monday: “those numbers are not accurate.” He said negotiations with the league are similar to 2012 when a stalemate resulted in a 110-day lockout and replacement referees were used.

The league wants compensation tied to performance so that only high-performing game officials during the regular season share in the year-end bonus pool.

The league is also seeking greater flexibility to ensure the best officials are on the field during the postseason. The current CBA includes seniority as a factor in making postseason assignments.

Shortening the “dark period” is also a priority for the NFL. Currently, the league has no communication with game officials during the roughly three-month stretch between the Super Bowl and May 15. The goal is to increase access to game officials for rules discussions, video review, mechanics and appropriate football operations and committee meetings in order to improve the game and officials’ performance.

The NFL is offering to hire some full-time officials, but one of the people said the union is resisting and is asking for “full-time pay and part-time hours.”

Green told the AP the 2012 and 2019 CBA agreements included provisions that would allow some officials to serve in full-time roles. He said the league experimented with this in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

“Each program ended because of their inability to manage it,” Green said.

In a statement, Green said:

“Apparently ‘League sources’ are continuing to put out false and misleading information instead of wanting to meet at the negotiating table. The bottom line is our officials work for the wealthiest sports league in America, with profits that far exceed any of the others. That’s normally a point of pride for the NFL. However, our officials are substantially under-compensated when compared to baseball and basketball umpires and referees. Our officials also aren’t provided the health care benefits that those at 345 Park Avenue have. As far as performance pay, we had ‘high performing officials’ who worked this year’s championship games and the Super Bowl who were paid less for those games than what they were paid for a regular-season game. That certainly isn’t rewarding performance, as the NFL claims is their goal.”

In preparation for potential use of replacement officials, the NFL competition committee has proposed a contingency that would allow the replay center in New York to advise the on-field officials on any missed roughing the passer or intentional grounding penalty, as well as any act that would have led to an ejection had a penalty been called. NFL owners will vote on the proposal this week at the annual meeting.

The NFL used replacement officials for the first three weeks of the 2012 season and resulted in several mistakes and wrong calls, including the disputed TD catch known as the “Fail Mary.”

RAMS CONSIDERING SIGNING KIRK COUSINS AS BACKUP QB

Los Angeles coach Sean McVay is open to a potential reunion with Kirk Cousins as the team’s backup quarterback behind reigning MVP Matthew Stafford.

The Rams are also open to re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo, who has served as the team’s backup for the last two seasons. However, Garoppolo is a free agent and could elect to sign elsewhere, potentially opening the door for a Cousins-McVay reunion.

McVay was the offensive coordinator in Washington when Cousins took over as the starter in 2015. They spent five seasons together and Cousins is back on the market, seemingly as a depth piece, after he was released on March 11 two years into the four-year, $180 million contract he signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

“Kirk is as influential as anybody in helping me get to L.A. in the first place,” McVay said in a Monday appearance on PFT Live at the league meetings in Phoenix. “I know he’s got some other options and some other suitors but Jimmy and Kirk are guys that I would love to be able to have back with us.” Sports

Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, turns 38 in August. He struggled down the stretch in his first season with the Falcons, throwing 18 touchdowns to 16 interceptions and losing the starting job to rookie Michael Penix Jr. However, he appeared healthier when he stepped in for Penix after the latter’s season-ending injury last fall, throwing for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in eight starts.

Over 14 seasons, Cousins has completed 66.7% of his passes for 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns and 131 interceptions.

BILLS QB JOSH ALLEN (FOOT) LIKELY ‘FULL-GO’ FOR OFFSEASON PROGRAM

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is out of his walking boot and looking positioned for a full recovery from his right foot injury in time for the start of offseason workouts, GM Billy Beane told reporters Monday at the league’s spring meetings in Phoenix.

“His foot, I don’t want to say it’s 100 percent, but he’s good,” Beane said. “When he gets back in April, we expect him to be full-go.”

Allen played the last regular-season game and Buffalo’s two playoff games

through a broken bone in his foot sustained in Week 16 vs. Cleveland. He had surgery to repair the injury shortly after the season came to an end in the divisional round at Denver, but made it clear to reporters when he showed up at new head coach Joe Brady’s press conference in a walking boot that he would have kept playing had the Bills advanced to the AFC championship game.

“Our medical team has checked up on him,” Beane said, “and he’s talked to the surgeon that’s done it. I don’t know every single conversation they’ve had, but (Bills head athletic trainer) Nate Breske and (Bills lead physician) Les Bisson have let us know he’s on track and should be ready to roll once we’re actually doing football stuff in April.”

The 2024 MVP and four-time Pro Bowler who turns 30 in May led Buffalo to its first road playoff win in 33 years at Jacksonville in last season’s wild-card round. He’s thrown for 30,102 yards, 220 touchdowns and 94 interceptions in 128 games (127 starts) over eight seasons with the Bills.

REPORT: BROWNS WITHDRAW RULE CHANGE PROPOSAL FOR DRAFT PICK TRADES

The Cleveland Browns have withdrawn their proposed rule change which would have extended how far out teams can trade draft picks, according to an NFL Network report.

The Browns proposed the rule earlier this month, hoping to grow the range at which teams can trade draft picks from three years to five.

The organization argued this “1) would provide Clubs with greater roster-building flexibility, 2) would create more creative trade structures that better mirror the valuations of both draft selections and players, 3) would increase the liquidity of draft capital which supports league-wide parity, 4) would improve alignment with contract and salary cap cycles, and 5) would encourage a more active trade market.”

The proposal was set to be voted on this week at the league’s meetings in Phoenix, needing 24 of 32 votes in favor in order to be approved. However, it seems highly unlikely it was going to pass, with Rams head coach Sean McVay going so far as to say it had a “zero percent” chance.

BRONCOS QB BO NIX (ANKLE) WILL BE READY FOR OTAS

The ankle injury which kept Broncos quarterback Bo Nix out of last year’s AFC Championship won’t cause him to miss any on-field offseason work.

Nix will be fully recovered from the fractured right ankle he sustained in Denver’s Jan. 17 divisional-round playoff win over Buffalo by the time OTAs start in early May, Broncos general manager George Paton told 9NEWS Monday at the league meetings in Phoenix.

“He’s ahead of schedule,” Paton said. “He’s running, he’s jumping. Really proud of how he’s attacked rehab. He’s done a great job. He’ll be ready for OTAs.”

Nix, 26, has been a spark in the two seasons since Denver picked him 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He has posted a 24-10 regular-season record with a 64.8 completion percentage, 7,706 passing yards and 54 touchdowns to 23 interceptions. He has also rushed for 786 yards and nine TDs, leading the Broncos to the playoffs both years.

Denver’s offseason trade acquisition of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from Miami gives Nix another weapon at his disposal entering his third season this fall.

BILLS PICK UP TE DALTON KINCAID’S OPTION FOR 2027

The Buffalo Bills officially picked up the fifth year option on tight end Dalton Kincaid’s rookie contract.

General manager Brandon Beane confirmed the move on Monday at the league meetings in Phoenix.

Kincaid, a first-round pick (25th overall) in 2023, will earn $8.1 million fully guaranteed for the 2027 season.

He made his first Pro Bowl in 2025 after catching 39 passes for 571 yards and five scores in 12 games.

Kincaid, 26, has tallied 156 receptions for 1,692 yards and nine touchdowns in 41 career games (24 starts).

UTAH STATE HIRES NORTHERN IOWA’S BEN JACOBSON TO BE ITS MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Utah State has hired longtime Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson to be its men’s basketball coach, the school announced Monday.

Jacobson, who agreed to a five-year deal with the Aggies, succeeds Jerrod Calhoun, who left to take over at Cincinnati.

Jacobson becomes the fifth head coach in seven seasons at Utah State. He takes over an Aggies program that has reached the NCAA Tournament in four straight seasons.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to join Utah State as it enters its next chapter in the Pac-12,” Jacobson said in a news release. “I’m grateful to Cameron Walker for trusting me to lead such a historic program and to continue its tradition as one of the top men’s basketball programs in the West.”

Jacobson spent 20 seasons at Northern Iowa and made five NCAA Tournament appearances with the Panthers — highlighted by a Sweet 16 appearance in 2010 as a No. 9 seed. He compiled a 397-259 record at Northern Iowa and had a school- record 31 wins in the 2014-15 season.

JOYCE EDWARDS, NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA ROUT TCU, CHARGE INTO FINAL FOUR

Joyce Edwards scored six of her game-high 24 points during a fourth-quarter deluge that sent Sacramento 4 Region No. 1 seed South Carolina to its sixth consecutive Final Four with a 78-52 rout of No. 3 seed TCU on Monday.

The Gamecocks (35-3) led the Horned Frogs throughout the third quarter but could not gain more than 10 points of separation. That changed in the fourth period when South Carolina erupted for a 14-0 run.

Edwards scored on three consecutive possessions during the decisive burst, each coming off of quick transitions. The Gamecocks successfully picked up the tempo in the fourth quarter, dominating the glass with a 15-2 rebounding margin and pushing the ball up the floor upon gaining possession.

South Carolina wound up holding TCU (32-6) to 33.3% shooting the floor and outrebounding the Horned Frogs 52-24. Edwards led the Gamecocks with 12 rebounds, while Raven Johnson snared eight boards to go with 10 points and six assists.

Tessa Johnson shot a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range for the Gamecocks on the way to 11 points, and Agot Makeer scored 18 points off the bench.

Makeer was vital to the pivotal run, scoring six points in less than two minutes to help jump-start the flurry.

Olivia Miles put up 18 points to lead TCU but was limited to 6-of-20 shooting from the floor. She hit 3 of 6 from beyond the 3-point arc, helping the Horned Frogs connect on one triple more than South Carolina (seven to six).

However, the Gamecocks attempted nine 3-pointers to TCU’s 21, content to instead leverage their advantage on the inside. South Carolina outscored 46-28 TCU in the paint and doubled up the Horned Frogs at the free-throw line, 6-for-8 to 3-for-4.

South Carolina now heads to Phoenix as the fourth team to qualify for the Final Four. UCLA and reigning national champion UConn advanced on Sunday, while Texas blew out Michigan in the other Monday regional final.

The Gamecocks will oppose the Huskies in the semifinals on Friday in Phoenix.

MADISON BOOKER NETS 19 AS TEXAS POUNDS MICHIGAN TO RETURN TO FINAL FOUR

Madison Booker scored 19 points, Rori Harmon had 13 assists and flirted with a triple-double, and top-seeded Texas crushed Michigan 77-41 in an NCAA West Regional final in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday.

Harmon had seven points and seven rebounds and Kyla Oldacre had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the balanced Longhorns (35-3), who will take a 12-game winning streak into their second straight Final Four appearance.

The Longhorns will face UCLA (35-1) in an NCAA semifinal Friday. They handed the Bruins their only loss 76-65 in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas on Nov. 26.

Texas limited the Wolverines to 22.8% shooting from the field and had a 49-32 rebounding edge.College sports coverage

The Longhorns have held four tournament opponents to 45, 58, 54 and 41 points and outscored them by an average of 36.75 points. They outscored the Wolverines 43-20 in the second half.

Olivia Olson and Mila Holloway scored 11 points apiece for the Wolverines (28-7), who tied the program record for wins in a season but were held to a season-low in points.

Justice Carlton had 13 of her 15 points in the second half and Breya Cunningham added 11 points for the Longhorns. Booker, Cunningham and Carlton also had seven rebounds.

Texas made its first nine field goal attempts to take an 18-4 lead seven minutes into the  game. Michigan made its first shot but missed its next 11 and never was closer than 11.

Texas led by 17 in the second quarter and was up 34-21 at half before putting it away with a 21-8 third quarter.

REPORTS: CONNECTICUT SUN TO RELOCATE, REBRAND AS HOUSTON COMETS IN ’27

The original queens of the WNBA are coming back to the court in 2027.

The Connecticut Sun will be rebranded as the Houston Comets once the sale to Houston Rockets owners Fertitta Entertainment is approved by the league’s board of governors, according to multiple media reports.

Led by stars like Cynthia Cooper, Tina Thompson and Sheryl Swoopes, the Comets captured the WNBA’s first four championships from 1997 to 2000 but disbanded after the 2008 season.

The upcoming season will be the last the Sun play in Connecticut, their home since 2003, before relocating to Houston ahead of the 2027 season.

Multiple outlets reported last week that the Fertittas purchased the Sun for $300 million.

The Mohegan Tribe, current owners of the Sun, entertained offers to sell the team last year. Former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry proposed a plan to keep the team in-state but move it to the capital of Hartford, and Steve Pagliuca, a Boston Celtics minority owner, offered $325 million to move the team to Boston, which was initially accepted before the league refused to approve the sale.

The Fertitta family, led by Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, entered the picture with reports of their interest surfacing in December.

Houston had also pursued an expansion franchise, but the WNBA instead selected Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia in the latest round of expansion deals.

The Mohegan Tribe purchased the team formerly known as the Orlando Miracle and moved them to Uncasville, Conn., in 2003. They sent a letter to fans last season promising the team would spend at least the 2026 season in their current home of Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Sun have never won a WNBA title but have lost four times in the league finals, most recently in 2022.

NBA ROUNDUP: SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER-LED THUNDER TOP PISTONS IN OT

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 47 points to lift the host Oklahoma City Thunder to a 114-110 overtime win over the short-handed Detroit Pistons on Monday in a matchup of conference leaders.

Gilgeous-Alexander opened overtime with a step-back jumper, found Alex Caruso for a corner 3-pointer with just more than a minute remaining and then hit six free throws in the final minute. Oklahoma City won for the 15th time in 16 games.

Detroit was short-handed, playing without its top five scorers, but the Pistons stayed in the game in large part due to a 16-4 advantage in second-chance points.

The Pistons, who got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Paul Reed, had their two-game winning streak snapped.NBA game highlights

Victor Wembanyama continued his brilliant play by racking up 41 points and 16 rebounds while helping host San Antonio to a victory over Chicago in a late-season interconference clash.

It was Wembanyama’s third game with 40 or more points this season. Stephon Castle added 21 points for San Antonio while Keldon Johnson scored 15.

Tre Jones led Chicago with 23 points. Leonard Miller added 21 off the bench, Collin Sexton had 20, Guerschon Yabusele hit for 15 points and Matas Buzelis finished with 12 for the Bulls, who have already been eliminated from the postseason.Games

The Suns won their second straight by closing strong, outscoring the Grizzlies 40-16 in the final quarter. The Suns were dominant in the paint, where they scored 68 points.

Lakers 120, Wizards 101

LeBron James posted the 125th triple-double of his career while leading Los Angeles to a comprehensive win over visiting Washington.

James compiled 21 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists to become, at 41 years, 90 days, the oldest player to notch a triple-double, surpassing his own record of 41 years, 79 days. It was his third triple-double of the season. Austin Reaves, Jaxson Hayes and Luke Kennard contributed 19 points apiece for the Lakers, who have won 15 of their past 17 games.

Kyle Filipowski tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead Utah. Cody Williams added a team-high 26 points for the Jazz, who have lost six straight games and 10 of their past 11 contests.

Timberwolves 124, Mavericks 94

Ayo Dosunmu recorded his second career triple-double, finishing with 18 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and 12 assists to lead Minnesota to a road rout of Dallas.

With All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards coming off the bench and limited to 22:37 of playing time in his return from a knee injury, Dosunmu stepped up to shoulder some of the offensive load. Rudy Gobert posted 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Julius Randle netted a game-high 24 points.

Daniel Gafford led Dallas with 21 points on 9-of-11 field-goal shooting, while Rookie of the Year hopeful Cooper Flagg was held more than eight points below his season-long scoring average with 12 points on 5-of-19 shooting from the floor.

NHL

NHL ROUNDUP: NAZEM KADRI SCORES TWICE TO POWER AVS PAST FLAMES

Nazem Kadri scored two power-play goals 1:06 apart in the first period, Nathan MacKinnon scored his NHL-leading 49th goal and added two assists, and the Colorado Avalanche routed the Calgary Flames 9-2 in Denver on Monday night.

Colorado’s Parker Kelly, Jack Drury and Martin Necas had a goal and two assists each. Sam Malinski and Artturi Lehkonen had a goal and an assist apiece for the Avalanche, who snapped a four-game home losing streak (0-3-1). Gabriel Landeskog added a goal.

Colorado defenseman Cale Makar had three assists but didn’t play in the third period due to an upper-body injury suffered late in the second. Brock Nelson contributed two helpers and Scott Wedgewood turned away 27 shots.

Brennan Othmann and Ryan Strome scored for Calgary and Devin Cooley made 28 saves after replacing Dustin Wolf midway through the first period. The Flames had won five of six.

Sharks 5, Blues 4

Adam Gaudette scored the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining in regulation as San Jose edged visiting St. Louis.

Gaudette put his wrist shot under goalie Joel Hofer’s glove for his 15th goal of the season. Macklin Celebrini and Alexander Wennberg each scored twice and added an assist for the Sharks. With the second point of his three-point night, Celebrini became the sixth teenager in NHL history to register 100 points in a season.

Theo Lindstein, Pavel Buchnevich, Philip Broberg and Cam Fowler tallied for the Blues, who had their four-game winning streak end.

Golden Knights 4, Canucks 2

Reilly Smith scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Adin Hill made 22 saves as Vegas defeated Vancouver in John Tortorella’s Golden Knights coaching debut in Las Vegas.

Rasmus Andersson, Shea Theodore and Cole Smith also scored goals for Vegas, which snapped a three-game losing streak while winning for just the second time in eight games. Tortorella took over for Bruce Cassidy, who was fired on Sunday.

Evander Kane, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, and Brock Boeser scored goals for the Canucks, who lost their sixth straight game. Kevin Lankinen finished with 30 saves.

Penguins 8, Islanders 3

Anthony Mantha scored twice and added an assist and Pittsburgh produced a five-goal second period amid seven unanswered goals to claim a comeback victory over New York in Elmont, N.Y.

Justin Brazeau notched three assists while Sidney Crosby collected two assists in his return after missing the previous game due to a lower-body injury.

Mathew Barzal netted one goal and one assist while Anders Lee and Brayden Schenn both scored once for the Islanders. Adam Boqvist and Cal Ritchie both collected a pair of assists. New York’s starting goalie, Ilya Sorokin, surrendered seven goals on 28 shots before being pulled.

Maple Leafs 5, Ducks 4 (OT)

John Tavares capped a two-goal, one-assist night by scoring with five seconds left in overtime as visiting Toronto bested Anaheim in an entertaining though predictably physical clash.

Tavares sealed the deal for the Maple Leafs with a tip on the doorstep off a low, quick feed from Morgan Rielly. William Nylander tallied four points on the night, including the tying goal halfway through the third period. Rielly had a goal and an assist, Matthew Knies added a goal and Easton Cowan and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each had two assists.

Leo Carlsson scored twice for Anaheim, which has lost two in a row (0-1-1). John Carlson and Cutter Gauthier also scored, and Jackson LaCombe logged two assists.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

MLB ROUNDUP: D-BACKS SPOIL JUSTIN VERLANDER’S TIGERS RETURN

Corbin Carroll homered, tripled and drove in four runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks survived a late Detroit rally to spoil Justin Verlander’s return to the Tigers with a 9-6 victory in Phoenix on Monday.

Carroll tripled in a run in the first inning and hit a three-run homer in the second for a quick 5-0 lead off Verlander, who was making his first start with the Tigers since 2017 after signing a one-year contract in the offseason.

Verlander (0-1) gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. He spent his first 13 seasons in Detroit, where he won the American League Cy Young Award in 2011.

Michael Soroka (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings and tied his career high with 10 strikeouts in his first start for Arizona, which won its home opener after being swept in a season-opening three-game series by the Dodgers. He pitched an “immaculate inning” in the fifth, striking out the side on nine pitches. Paul Sewald pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

White Sox 9, Marlins 4

Miguel Vargas blasted a grand slam and drove in six runs, Austin Hays slugged a three-run homer, and Chicago earned its first win of the season, beating host Miami.

Munetaka Murakami, the first player ever to homer in his first three games with the White Sox, went 1-for-5, but his home run streak ended. Chicago bounced back after losing three straight. Davis Martin (1-0) allowed five hits and three runs in five innings.

The Marlins took their first loss after a three-game season-opening sweep. Miami was led by Liam Hicks, who hit a two-run homer and added an RBI single. Chris Paddack (0-1) made his Marlins debut, allowing eight hits and eight runs in four innings.

Rockies 14, Blue Jays 5

Troy Johnston hit a two-run homer to ignite a seven-run sixth inning as visiting Colorado defeated Toronto for its first win in four games this season.

GOLF NEWS

THE MASTERS: WHEN IT STARTS, HOW TO WATCH, BETTING ODDS FOR GOLF’S FIRST MAJOR OF 2026

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Rory McIlroy might have set the tone for the 90th edition of the Masters shortly after he finally won that coveted green jacket. “What are we all going to talk about next year?” he said.

Next year arrives on April 9, and McIlroy will be relieved of questions that constantly dogged him about when he was ever going to conquer Augusta National. Now that burden falls to those who have managed to get only one arm in the fabled jacket, a list that includes Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele.

Scottie Scheffler remains the betting favorite because he already has won the Masters twice and he has been No. 1 in the world for nearly three straight years. He won in his season debut and has gone quiet by his standards the last month.

DeChambeau has won his last two tournaments on Saudi-funded LIV Golf, with a 57-man field and limited supply of stars in their prime. The two-time U.S. Open champion played in the final group with McIlroy last year.

Augusta National is roughly the same, except for perhaps the color. The azaleas and dogwoods were blooming two weeks before the gates open.

No matter. Amid what seems like constant change in golf, the Masters brings a degree of normalcy as golf’s rite of spring and for many, the true opening week of the sport.

Here is a look at what you need to know leading up to the Masters.

When does the Masters start?

The Masters is April 9-12, keeping its traditional spot on the calendar the first full week in April. Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson again are scheduled to hit the ceremonial tee shots about 7:30 a.m. before Thursday’s opening round.

The Par 3 Contest is on Wednesday, April 8, created in 1960 to replace what previously was a clinic the golfers performed. Now it’s become a showcase for Masters players young and old, and caddies who are mostly young — the children of players.

Who is playing?

The field currently is 93 players, keeping with another Masters tradition. Augusta National prefers fewer than 100 players in the field, and it’s been that way dating to 1967.

What about Tiger?

The question of who is playing takes on a special meaning this year because no one is certain if five-time champion Tiger Woods will be on the list.

Woods already was struggling to get his legs in shape for the tournament when he was arrested March 27 in Florida on a driving while intoxicated charge. No alcohol was found in his system, but drug experts determined he was impaired and Woods was jailed for eight hours by Florida law enforcement for refusing a urine test.

Woods has never missed the cut at the Masters as a pro. He set the record for consecutive cuts in 2024, the last time he played. Players do not have to announce if they are playing. He would only have to register ahead of his opening tee shot, though it’s a courtesy to let tournament officials know before the tee times are announced on the Tuesday of Masters week.

How can I watch the Masters?

The options are practically limitless. Thursday and Friday rounds start at 1 p.m. ET on Prime Video, the latest broadcast partner for Augusta National. ESPN will take over at 3 p.m. on the weekday rounds through 7:30 p.m. Then on the weekend, Paramount+ will get started at noon, and CBS will carry live tournament coverage from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

But that’s not all.

The Master is offering live video channels on https://www.masters.com/en_US/index.html with a menu that includes featured pairings; live action from the 4th, 5th and 6th holes; Amen Corner (Nos. 11-13); the 15th and 16th holes. Prime Video will have a stats-enhanced stream on Amen Corner.

Is anything new with the golf course?

Other than the blooms peaking a little early, not really. Players long have suspected tweaks here and there without saying so. All that’s known is the front of the 17th tee was reduced by 12 yards and the tee marker was relocated to make the scorecard show 450 yards (up from 440 yards).

What’s new off the golf course?

The buzz is the new Player Services Building located behind the driving range, a three-level structure with an indoor parking garage beneath the members range. It has a gym and recovery room on one level, an enormous locker room on the second level and dining for players, family and support staff on the third level.

And for those who manage to get a ticket, the Masters has a new candy bar in its concession. The name of it: Candy Bar.

Who are the favorites?

Scheffler is the betting favorite, according to BetMGM Sportsbook, which lists the world’s No. 1 player at +500. He is followed by McIlroy and DeChambeau (+1000), former Masters champion Jon Rahm (+1200), and then Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele (+1400).

What happened last year?

In what ranks among the greatest Masters ever, Rory McIlroy lost a four-shot lead on the back nine, regained the lead, lost it again and wound up in a playoff with Justin Rose. McIlroy won on the first extra hole with a gap wedge to 3 feet for birdie, making him the six player to capture the career Grand Slam.

Who are some of the first-timers at the Masters?

The most interesting of the 22 newcomers is Chris Gotterup. He’s only the third player since World War II to win four times before he plays in his first Masters. Gotterup first qualified by winning the Scottish Open. He won the Sony Open and Phoenix Open earlier this year.

Three players from the top 20 in the world are making their debut — Ben Griffin, who played in his first Ryder Cup last September, and Riviera winner Jacob Bridgeman, who went to nearby Clemson.

Also playing are Kristoffer Reitan of Norway and Rasmus Neergaard-Peterson of Denmark, part of a record eight players from Nordic countries.

INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES

INDIANA BASEBALL

BASEBALL CENTRAL: EVANSVILLE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Baseball team (10-17, 3-9 B1G) will be out for redemption this week after getting swept at No. 24 Nebraska over the weekend. Head coach Jeff Mercer and his squad will be looking to break a five-game losing streak ahead of a visit from Rutgers over the weekend. The Hoosiers are 9-4 against the Purple Aces during his tenure as the skipper.

Sophomore outfielder Cole Decker will return to his hometown of Evansville on Tuesday in the best form of his life. He has a team-best 12-game reached base streak and has hit .333 (10-30) over the last 10 games. During that stretch, he is reaching base at a .487 clip – the best of any IU players.

Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher has produced five-straight scoreless outings (9.1 innings pitched) as his stellar campaign continues. He tossed 2.2 innings of shutout baseball on Friday at Nebraska, keeping IU in the game down the stretch. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski (3.06 ERA) have been two of the best options out of the bullpen on the year.

First pitch at Charles H. Braun Field is set for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT in Evansville. It is the final game in the month of March as the calendar flips to April this week. ESPN+ will stream the game and the radio broadcast can be heard at iuhoosiers.com/watch.

Probable Starters

Indiana at Evansville

• Tuesday: TBD (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Leading Off

HOMETOWN KIDS: Sophomore outfielder Cole Decker and freshman right-handed pitcher Kellen English both hail from Evansville and will return to play in their hometown on Tuesday. Both players were teammates at Evansville North High School and played prep ball for the Huskies.

ON BASE MACHINE: Sophomore outfielder Cole Decker is riding a team-best 12-game reached-base streak into Tuesday. He moved into the leadoff spot on Sunday and has provided a spark for the Hoosiers. In that 12-game stretch, he has hits in nine of those ballgames.

BIG TIME VOGEL: Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Vogel has enjoyed a nice stretch of run over the past few weeks. He’s worked five consecutive scoreless outings. In that frame, he’s tossed 9.1 innings and collected five strikeouts.

DO IT ALL: Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny has played at a high level in 2026. He leads the Hoosiers with a .430 on-base percentage. He’s second on the team with a .324 batting average and has collected 34 hits, 10 doubles, five home runs and 21 RBIs on the year.

TO TAKEOVER: Freshman catcher Owen ten Oever had a week to remember despite not making a start. He had three pinch-hit base knocks including a memorable 3-run home run on Saturday against Nebraska. He’s hitting .333 this year with three base hits in seven appearances.

BIG DUO: Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny and sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley have combined for 70 hits, 10 home runs, 46 RBIs and 47 runs scored this year. Each player is slugging over .530 on the season and have both been in the lineup for all 27 games.

Scouting the Opponent

Evansville

• The Purple Aces have a 7-18 record, due in part to a schedule that included series against Kentucky, Ole Miss and Cal Baptist. Evansville is off to a 2-1 start in the Missouri Valley after winning a home weekend against Illinois State. Evansville has a pair of wins over Xavier on the docket this year.

• Evansville is led by a young offensive core, much like the Hoosiers. Freshman catcher Spike Magill is tops on the team with a .288 batting average. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Charlie Longmeier has racked up 29 base knocks on the year. The Purple Aces have just 52 extra-base hits this year.

• Senior right-handed pitcher Owen Byberg will get the start. He boasts a sub-4.00 ERA. Seven of his nine appearances have been multi-inning efforts. He went five innings against Kentucky back in February. Evansville’s team ERA has gone back up over 7.00 after the weekend.

Inside the Series

Evansville

• This series dates back to the 1940’s between two teams separated by just two hours. Evansville has been a place recruited well by the Hoosiers. This year’s team includes a pair of natives from the city (Cole Decker, Kellen English).

• With head coach Jeff Mercer at the helm, the series has picked up considerably. The two teams even played weekend series in 2019 and 2022. This is the second-straight year where IU will play Evansville in a home-and-home midweek series. IU won both games last year.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF

BROWN GOES LOW, BOILERS 2 SHOTS BACK IN 2ND

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Behind a career-low 66 (-6) in the second round from sophomore Samantha Brown, Purdue Women’s Golf sits in second place following the first two rounds of the Coach Mo Classic. The Boilermakers are 6-over with 18 holes remaining, tied with No. 16 Florida State and two shots back of clubhouse leader Furman (+4).

Following a 296 (+8) in the opening round, Purdue shaved off 10 strokes during the afternoon as a 2-under 286 moved the Old Gold and Black up the leaderboard. The Boilermakers played the par 3s at St. John’s Golf and Country Club better than any other team, only 2-over par as a team. Purdue also ranked second in birdies (29) and par-4 scoring (+19) following the first 36 holes.

On the individual leaderboard, Brown finds herself in second place at 3-under (75-66), two strokes behind Sophia Fullbrook of Florida State. She was 1-under on the par 3s and 1-under on the par 4s, leading the field in both categories.

Brown’s 66 tied for the fifth-lowest round in Purdue history and was the best round (in relation to par) by a Boilermaker since Kan Bunnabodee’s school record 63 (-9) at the 2023 Boilermaker Classic. She started the round with a birdie at the par-3 fifth before making three straight birdies on holes 8-10 to move to 4-under. Back-to-back birdies at No. 18 and at No. 1 as she returned to the front side pushed Brown to 6-under on her round. The sophomore added three pars down the stretch to complete the bogey-free, personal-best round.

Luana Valero (+2) is tied for 11th individually after rounds of 74 (+2) and 72 (E). The freshman matched Brown with a team-high seven birdies throughout the day. Ashley Kim followed with consecutive 74s, placing the junior Boilermaker inside the Top 20 in 17th place. She started off her second round on fire with three birdies through her first five holes.

After earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors her last time on the links, Ida Lindqvist returned to the lineup and led the Boilermakers in the opening round for the first time this season. Limiting the miscues with a team-low three bogeys in the morning, she carded a 1-over 73 ahead of the 74s from Kim and Valero.

Only two strokes behind the leaders, the Boilermakers are within striking distance to defend their tournament title. Purdue will be paired alongside Furman and Florida State, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday morning.

FRESHMAN PHENOMS

  • Ava Zachary has been one of the best players in the conference this season, leading the team with a .395 batting average and is tied for the team lead with four home runs and 19 RBI. In conference play, Zachary is hitting a blistering .474 with a team-high 18 hits, finding a role in the three-spot of the lineup.
  • Hayden Kyne has been a valuable bat for Notre Dame in her first collegiate season. The catcher/designated player has burst out in conference play, hitting .371 with a team-high 13 RBI against ACC foes. Both of Kyne’s home runs this season have come against conference teams.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S TENNIS

#70 IRISH UPSET #19 CAL, 4-1, EARNING 2ND RANKED VICTORY OF THE WEEKEND

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 70 Notre Dame women’s tennis team was looking to bounce back in a major way and they certainly did this past weekend, completing a state of California sweep by knocking off both Stanford and Cal at home. Not to mention, the Fighting Irish (14-7, 4-6) picked up two ranked wins along the way – first dispatching the No. 40 Cardinal, 4-3, on Friday, then upsetting No. 19 Cal, 4-1, on Sunday. The win over the Bears was their highest-ranked victory of the season thus far.

It also marked the program’s second-ever wins against both Stanford (2-7 all-time) and Cal (2-1 all-time).

In doubles, Bianca Molnar and Bojana Pozder put together a stellar 2-0 weekend with a pair of ranked wins. They were dominant against No. 88 Ekstrand/Driscoll of Stanford, winning 6-1 to clinch the doubles point; then, they came up huge again with a 6-3 victory over No. 65 Svendsen/Mushika of Cal. Molnar/Pozder are currently ranked 45th nationally and improved to 6-3 in duals, 17-7 overall as a pair.

The match against Stanford on Friday evening was high drama. After Notre Dame claimed a 3-0 lead with singles victories from Sophia Holod and Jessica Kovalcik on courts five and six, Stanford rallied to tie the match at 3-all. All eyes then turned to Akari Matsuno on court two, who was in a three-set thriller. Squaring off against No. 34 Alyssa Ahn, the two exchanged 6-4 sets to send it into a decisive third. Next, Matsuno was able to push ahead late for a third set 6-4 victory as the Irish celebration unfolded.

On Sunday against No. 19 Cal, after clinching the doubles point yet again, the Irish used singles victories from Rylie Hanford (court 5) and Bianca Molnar (court 1) to build a 3-1 lead. For No. 77 Molnar, it marked her highest-ranked singles victory this spring, knocking off No. 16 Johanne Svendsen, 7-5, 6-4.

Next, freshman Jessica Kovalcik played the role of clincher with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over. No. 91 Naomi Xu.

Unfortunately, Matsuno’s battle with No. 8 Berta Passola Folch was cut just short when she was up in the third set, 6-2, 2-6, 5-4.

Holod and Kovalcik have put together stellar freshman spring campaigns with 12-5 and 12-1 records, respectively. Molnar has now joined them in double-digit wins with a 10-5 spring record.

Next, three regular-season matches remain for the Blue & Gold: at Wake Forest on April 3, at NC State on April 5, and then vs. DePaul at home on April 12.

#70 Notre Dame (14-7, 4-6) – 4 | #19 Cal (9-4, 6-2) – 1

DOUBLES – 3, 1, 2

NOTRE DAME MEN’S TENNIS

#18 IRISH SWEEP BC AND COMPLETE 2-0 WEEKEND

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 18th nationally ranked Notre Dame men’s tennis team continued its impressive season with two more ACC wins this past weekend, both on the road. The Fighting Irish (19-4, 8-2) started with a 4-2 win over No. 32 SMU, then followed that up with a 4-0 sweep over Boston College.

The doubles team of Luis Llorens Saracho and Peter Nad went 2-0 on the weekend, clinching the doubles point in both matches. On Friday, with all eyes on their court to sway some momentum heading into singles, Llorens Saracho and Nad gutted out a 7-6(2) win against Finkelstein/Arora of SMU.

The Irish duo has now won five straight to improve to 10-3 this spring.

In singles, Perry Gregg went 2-0 on court two to bump his dual record to 14-2. The 14 victories currently lead all Irish players. Gregg knocked off No. 102 Alex Finkelstein of SMU, 7-6(4), 6-4; then, defeated Matvey Greschner of Boston College, 6-3, 6-1.

The SMU matchup also witnessed a highly-ranked showdown between No. 13 Sebastian Dominko and No. 1 Trevor Svajda. Unfortunately, for tennis fans, the match was cut short in the third set. Dominko won the first set 6-4, then dropped the second one 5-7. The match was stopped at 4-4 in the third.

On Sunday, Dominko won swiftly, 6-1, 6-1, over BC’s Matthew Cairoscia to win his team best seventh straight. He’s now 12-1 this spring.

Luis Llorens Saracho went 2-0 in singles, including the match clincher at Boston College. He defeated Noah McDonald of SMU in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Then Llorens Saracho bested Luke Levanat of BC, 6-4, 6-2.

The Irish are 7-3 all-time now against the Mustangs and a dominant 12-0 against the Eagles (9-0 in the Coach Sachire era).

Three matches remain on the regular-season schedule: at Virginia on April 3, at Virginia Tech on April 5 and home vs. Louisville on April 11. The Irish are tied for third place in the ACC standings with NC State with an 8-2 league record.

Ball State (15-11) is coming off a weekend sweep of Ohio that catapulted the Cardinals to the top of the Mid-American Conference standings with a 10-2 record in MAC play. Brendan Garza was named the MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week after tossing a no-hitter on Friday, while Ryan Muizelaar was named the MAC Player of the Week largely thanks to a 4-for-5 performance with a triple, two home runs and six RBI in Sunday’s 17-7 victory.

Xavier (9-20) salvaged a Sunday 6-1 decision after dropping the first two of its initial Big East series at UConn over the weekend.

Head coach Billy O’Conner is in his ninth season in charge of the Musketeers, who were picked to finish third in the eight-team Big East preseason poll.

Xavier ranks second in the league in doubles (46) and third in home runs (29) to this point in the season.

Junior Clay Burdette is the Big East leader in batting average (.377) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.688). Freshman Josh Stonehouse paces the Musketeers in homers (eight) and RBI (18), as the eight home runs are the third-most in the Big East.

Ball State next plays at Miami (Ohio) in a three-game series starting Thursday afternoon.

GARZA AND MUIZELAAR AWARDED WITH MAC WEEKLY HONORS

Ryan Muizelaar has been named the Mid-American Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Brendan Garza has been named the MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Muizelaar went off in Ball State’s series finale vs Ohio on Sunday afternoon, going 4-for-5 with a triple and pair of three-run home runs for six RBI to lift the Cardinals to a 17-7 win over the Bobcats. The graduate student scored four runs on the day and finished a double short of the cycle to help Ball State secure the series sweep and jump into first place in the conference standings.

The right-handed hitter from Grand Forks, N.D., who has been manning third base for the Cardinals this year, went 3-for-5 on Saturday and also collected a hit in Friday’s series opener. Muizelaar produced a .571/.600/1.143 slash line in 14 at bats during the weekend series along with eight RBI and five runs scored. Muizelaar leads Ball State in batting average (.368) and RBI (29) after the big weekend.

Garza fired Ball State’s first no-hitter since 2019 in a 10-0 win over Ohio on Friday afternoon in Muncie. The sophomore struck out seven and worked around two walks and two hit batsmen for the seven-inning no-no. Garza worked 1-2-3 frames in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings and allowed a runner to get to second base only once. John Baker and Luke Jaksich combined to toss Ball State’s most recent no-hitter back on May 11, 2019 against Ohio.

The right-handed pitcher out of Mattawan, Mich., improved his record to 3-2 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in 40.0 innings pitched to begin the season.

This is the second weekly conference recognition for both, as Muizelaar was named the MAC Player of the Week on March 16 and Garza the MAC Pitcher of the Week on March 2. Jacob Gillis had the first honor of the season as MAC Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 23.

The Cardinals (15-11, 10-2 MAC) host Xavier on Tuesday afternoon before playing at Miami (Ohio) in a three-game series starting Thursday.

INDIANA STATE BASEBALL

SANDER DRIVES IN FIVE, KARST, MORSE DOMINANT IN SERIES-CLINCHING 10-1 WIN

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Indiana State offense exploded late behind a five-RBI game from Colin Sander, while Ryan Karst and Colby Morse shut down the Valparaiso offense with a combined two-hitter on Monday afternoon as the Sycamores took the series finale win over the Beacons, 10-1.

Indiana State (13-14, 4-2) claimed its second Missouri Valley series win of 2026 as the Sycamores offense steadily wore on the Valparaiso (7-16, 1-5) pitching staff on the day. The Sycamores scored in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings, before breaking out for a six-run ninth inning featuring nine hits over 12 batters with Andrew Ortiz and Carter Beck both recording two hits apiece in the inning in the series-clinching win.

Indiana State took the early lead in the top of the second inning on a Colin Sander RBI double down the right field line, and added to the lead on Emil Estrella’s RBI single in the third and Mason Roell’s solo home run in the fourth. Sander added his second RBI of the contest in the sixth with a sacrifice fly scoring Caden Miller to put Indiana State ahead 4-0.

Ryan Karst (1-1) shut down the Valparaiso bats on the mound as the senior right-hander set the tone early striking out the side in order in the bottom of the first on his way to allowing just an Eli Riley single in the bottom of the third as the lone Beacon hit for a majority of the game. Karst went the first 5.1 innings of the contest allowing just the one hit while striking out seven, before turning the ball over to Colby Morse in the sixth.

The Sycamores added insurance late in the top of the ninth inning as the first three batters all reached second base courtesy of Andrew Ortiz and Carter Beck doubles, while the Valparaiso left fielder misplayed Emil Estrella’s RBI single allowing him to take second base on the error. Nick Sutherlin and Weston Fulk also doubled in the inning, while Colin Sander provided the big hit in the frame with a three-run home run that made it a 10-0 Indiana State lead as the ball cleared the wall in left center.

Colby Morse (S, 1) cruised through the contest allowing just one run late as Valparaiso took advantage of Indiana State defensive indifference to move Brayden Pleau around the bases before George Betevis connected on an RBI bloop single with two outs in the ninth for the Beacons’ second hit of the contest. at Northwestern (9-14-1, 3-6 B1G)

Rocky and Berenice Miller Park (600) | Evanston, Ill.

Tuesday, March 31, 3 p.m. CT – RHP Spencer Boynton

Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will continue a busy week on the diamond that resembles a pro ball schedule as the Beacons head to Northwestern on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with the Wildcats. Valpo is playing seven games in eight days and the only non-gameday is a travel day with a flight to Seattle on Wednesday in advance of an Easter-weekend series at Washington beginning on Thursday night.

Last Time Out: Valpo dropped two of three in the first home series of the season against Indiana State, prevailing 10-1 in Sunday’s middle game but falling 18-2 in seven innings on Saturday and 10-1 on Monday. The Beacons shined in all three phases on Sunday as Connor Lockwood picked up the win thanks to seven innings of one-run ball, the team played error-free defense and Thomas Cooper and George Betevis both cracked home runs.

Following the Beacons: Tuesday’s game will be streamed on B1G+.  For links to video and stats, visit ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (219-387) is in his 13th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19, 2024 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

Series Notes: Valpo is 9-26 all-time against Northwestern in a series that began in 1946. The two programs will meet for the third straight year after not matching up from 2015-2023. VALPO MEN’S GOLF

BEACONS IMPROVE FROM ROUND 1 TO ROUND 2 ON MONDAY

The Valparaiso University men’s golf team bounced back in the second round, trimming 15 strokes off its Round-1 score, as the squad played the first 36 holes of South Alabama’s Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-71, 7239-yard RTJ Magnolia Grove Falls in Mobile, Ala.

How It Happened

Junior Adam Melliere (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville) was the most consistent Beacon on Monday, carding a 73 (+2) in each round to finish the day tied for 39th of 81 at 146.

Melliere, who was 3-under through his first seven holes of the opening round thanks to a string of three straight birdies, eagled the par-5 18th in Round 2.

After Melliere led the team in Round 1, senior Owen Sander (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) provided the squad’s best Round-2 score. Sander was one of nine players in the field to go sub-70 in the afternoon round, carding a 2-under 69, his best round of the season and tied for the best round of his career.

Sander made an astonishing 14-stroke improvement from Round 1 to Round 2. His second round featured a half dozen birdies.

Redshirt junior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) is second on the team through 36 holes at 149. He shaved seven strokes off his Round-1 score with a 71 (E) in Round 2.

The Beacons needed 303 strokes in Round 1 before improving to 288 in the afternoon, finishing the day at t-11 with a score of 591. The Beacons are even with former league foe Loyola Chicago and ahead of Houston Christian.

South Alabama leads its home tournament at 549 and has the top individual in Hugo Thyr at 131 (-11).

Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring

“We continue to strive for consistent individual and team scores with our tournament rounds, especially coming off our last tournament a couple weeks ago. We had two distinctly different rounds today, and the first round was not up to our standards at all. We only made eight birdies and we had 28 bogeys in the first round. Our ball-striking wasn’t good, and we really struggled with our approach shots into the greens – not hitting enough greens in regulation. Our scoring around the greens to save par wasn’t able to carry us, especially with a lot of short side chips back to the pins. One bright spot was Adam’s consistency during the round and rattling-off three birdies in a row on Holes 13-15.”

“The second round was much improved and we had a Top-5 team score in the tournament field.  We made 14 birdies and an eagle, while we had 15 bogeys. The ball-striking was much sharper and our proximity was much improved. The speed of our putts on the greens was much better, from both longer distances and around the pin. Our Par-5 scoring improved a lot and we certainly took better advantage of the Par 5s. Owen led the way for us with six birdies, and Ryan had four birdies in the second round.”

Up Next

The Beacons will close out the tournament with the third and final round on Tuesday. A link to live scoring via Clippd is available on ValpoAthletics.com.

MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

NATIONAL CHAMPION KNIGHTS EARN TWO ALL-AMERICA HONORS; HC SUNTANA ANDERSON NAIA COACH OF THE YEAR

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The newly-minted NAIA National Champion Marian Knights were one of six schools to earn multiple NAIA Women’s Basketball All-America honors on Monday afternoon, as the NAIA announced its 2025-26 All-America Teams, along with the NAIA Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. The Knights’ Abbey McNally and Taylor Double were honored as 2026 NAIA All-Americans, and for the fourth time in program history, Marian boasts the NAIA Coach of the Year, as head coach Suntana Anderson earned the prestigious honor in her second year at the helm of the Knights.

Suntana Anderson earned Coach of the Year honors after guiding Marian (Ind.) to its first Red Banner since 2017 in her fifth season at Marian and second season as head coach.

Under her leadership, the Knights piled up wins across conference and national competition, regularly overwhelming opponents with balanced offensive production and disciplined defense, showcased by the team’s 24 victories of 20 points or more. Anderson led the Knights to the 15th-best scoring offense in the NAIA this season, while defensively, the team ranked among the top-20 in nearly every statistical category, including the fourth-best scoring defense in the NAIA. Marian was among the nation’s leaders in turnovers forced per game, forcing 10-or-more errors in each of the team’s 37 games, while also posting 25 games with 20-or-more turnovers forced. The Knights set a program record on December 30 with 43 forced turnovers in a win over Ohio Christian.

Anderson is the second coach in program history to earn NAIA Coach of the Year honors, joining Katie Gearlds as all-time recipients. Gearlds won the NAIA DII Coach of the Year three times, winning in 2016, 2017, and 2020. Anderson was the 10th different female head coach to bring home an NAIA National Championship this season, and led the Knights to a program record 35-2 overall mark.

Abbey McNally headlined the All-America honors for Marian as she was named to the 2026 First Team All-America group. McNally is a three-time NAIA All-American, with her senior season marking the second appearance on the First Team. As a senior, McNally led the Knights with a single-season scoring record of 721 points, averaging 19.5 points per game this season. McNally became the third player in program history to score 2000 career points, and ended her career second all-time in scoring, finishing with 2244 points, just 16 behind the record held by Ella Collier. The senior finished her career ranked seventh in the Crossroads League in scoring, and is the Crossroads League’s all-time leading rebounder, grabbing a program record 1442 boards in four seasons.

Additionally, McNally’s senior season was highlighted by setting the Marian records for most starts in a career, most field goals and free throws made in a career, most free throw attempts, and highest field goal percentage (.587). McNally re-wrote her own single-game scoring record against Bethel University in January with 39 points, and finished the year with 66 career double-doubles, grabbing three 20-rebound games as a senior.

Taylor Double was named as an NAIA All-America Third Team honoree, earning her first career All-America honor. Double finished the season third on the team in points per game at 9.3 per contest, while scoring the fourth-most points with 334 this season. Double led the Knights in three-point field goal percentage this year with a .427 clip, making 53 shots from downtown. Among the team’s top-five defenders, Double recorded 62 steals and finished third on the team with 81 assists. As a junior, she scored in double-figures in 17 contests, including her season-high 25 points in the CL Tournament Semifinals against Indiana Wesleyan, and 16 points against Saint Francis in the CL Championship. Double scored the go-ahead three-pointer in the CL Championship against the Cougars, scoring 11 of 16 points in the final stanza.

Marian won its third NAIA National Championship in women’s basketball and 10th NAIA Red Banner in school history with the team’s 73-61 win over Dordt on March 24. Marian finished with a 35-2 overall record this season, winning 18 consecutive games to end the year, marking the second-longest winning streak to end a campaign in program history.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1948    At Ebbets Field No. 2, the Dodgers play their first exhibition game at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, which will remain the team’s home for 61 years. Amidst much fanfare, including Governor Millard Caldwell throwing the ceremonial first pitch, Jackie Robinson homers in the first inning when Brooklyn beats its top farm club, the Montreal Royals, 5-4.

1958    Larry Doby returns to the Indians when the Orioles trade him to Cleveland, along with Don Ferrarese, in exchange for Gene Woodling, Dick Williams, and Bud Daley. The 34-year-old veteran outfielder, who broke in with the Tribe in 1947 as the American League’s first black player, will have a solid season, hitting .284 in a part-time role with the fourth-place team.

1961    The Professional Baseball Rules Committee rejects the Pacific Coast League’s proposal to use a designated hitter for the pitcher by a vote of 8-1. The first use of the DH will occur in the American League in 1973.

1968    The American League’s new franchise in Seattle selects the Pilots as its nickname. The name originated from the city’s association with the aircraft industry and from co-owner Dewey Soriano’s part-time job as a harbor pilot.

1982    The Rangers trade outfielder/first baseman Al Oliver to the Expos for outfielder/third baseman Larry Parrish and minor league first baseman Dave Hostetler. Hitting .335 this season, Oliver will capture the National League batting crown, compiling a .315 batting average during his two seasons north of the border.

1984    On a televised episode of ABC’s Sports Beat, Howard Cosell informs interviewee Roger Maris of the Yankees’ plan to retire the slugger’s number 9 in July at the Old Timers’ Game ceremonies. At first, the former Bronx Bombers’ reaction is disbelief, followed by his genuine pleasure at being recognized for his achievements during his seven years with the team.

1993    Bill White, the first black to serve as a league president, resigns from his National League post. The former Cardinal first baseman will remain at the job until next March, replaced by Leonard S. Coleman, MLB’s director of market development.

1994    NBA superstar Michael Jordan joins the Birmingham Barons, the Class AA White Sox affiliate in the Southern League. Before returning to the NBA, the 31-year-old outfielder will play just one season of professional baseball, hitting .202 in 134 games for the minor league team.

1994    The Mets trade hard-luck right-hander Anthony Young to the Cubs for shortstop Jose Vizcaino. While with New York, A-Yo dropped 27 consecutive decisions, 14 as a starter and 13 as a reliever, establishing the major league record for the most consecutive losses by a pitcher.

1995    The first game at Coors Field draws a crowd of 47,536 to an exhibition featuring replacement players, with the Rockies beating the Yankees 4-1. The official opening game of the new park will take place on April 26, when Colorado hosts the Mets, winning a 14-inning, 11-9 slugfest that features 33 hits.

1996    At the Kingdome, the Mariners beat the White Sox in 12 innings, 3-2, marking the first time a season begins with a game played in March. In 2018, except for international openers, Opening Day for all 30 teams will be March 29, becoming the earliest start in major league history.

1998    Mark McGwire hits the first of his seventy home runs, going deep off Ramon Martinez in the fifth inning of the Cardinals’ 6-0 victory over the Dodgers at Busch Stadium. The Redbirds’ first baseman became the first player in franchise history to hit a grand slam on Opening Day.

1998    On Opening Day at Cinergy Field, Pokey Reese, filling in for shortstop Barry Larkin, who is on the DL, makes four errors on his first three chances in the Reds’ 10-2 loss to San Diego. The 25-year-old infielder will win the Gold Glove as a second baseman in 1999 and 2000.

1998    With a rare on-the-field appearance, Hank Aaron helps to mark Milwaukee’s historic return to the Senior Circuit as the Brewers play their inaugural game as a National League team, losing to the Braves at Turner Field, 2-1. Milwaukee is the first team to switch leagues since the inception of the American League in 1901.

1998    The Tigers spoil the Devil Rays’ major league debut, beating the American League’s newest team, 6-2, at Tampa’s Tropicana Field. After Hall-of-Famers Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Al Lopez, and Monte Irvin throw out ceremonial first pitches, Wilson Alvarez, the losing pitcher, hurls the first pitch in franchise history – a ball to Detroit’s center fielder Brian Hunter.

1998    In front of a sellout crowd of 47,484 at Bank One Ballpark, the Arizona Diamondbacks lose their inaugural game to the Rockies, 9-2. The seven-run difference matches the ’62 Mets and the ’77 Mariners for the most-lopsided loss by an expansion team in its first game.

1998    Alberto Castillo’s pinch-hits a 14th-inning single with two outs and the bases loaded, giving the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Phillies in the longest scoreless opener in National League history. The most extended Opening Day game in major league history occurred in 1926 when the Senators blanked the Philadelphia A’s in 15 innings, 1-0.

2003    At Shea Stadium, the Mets’ Opening Day lineup includes the first regular starting double-play combination in major league history featuring Puerto Rican natives. Second baseman Roberto Alomar and shortstop Rey Sanchez combine to make two twin killings as the Cubs drub New York, 15-2.

2003    Substituting for his son, a former Yale left-handed first baseman named George Bush throws the ceremonial first pitch when the Reds play the first game in their new home, Great American Ball Park. The former president and the sellout crowd of 42,263 flag-waving fans enjoy the patriotic pregame ceremonies and then watch the Pirates rout Cincinnati, 10-1.

2003    On Opening Day, the Major League Baseball website will have more than 10 million hits, setting a new record. The previous mark, set last season on the final day of online voting for All-Star Game starters, attracted 3.6 million visitors to MLB.com.

2004    With a 12-1 defeat of the Devil Rays in Tokyo, Kevin Brown becomes the second pitcher in history to have defeated all thirty major league teams. The 39-year-old right-hander joins Al Leiter, who accomplished the feat with the Mets last season.

2005    The Orioles and MLB agree to a deal allowing the televising of Nationals games. A joint venture backed by MLB will let fans in the Baltimore-Washington area enjoy both franchises’ telecasts, ensuring the Orioles fans in the nation’s capital will still have an opportunity to watch their ‘Birds.’

2007    In the MLB’s inaugural Civil Rights Game, the Cardinals beat the Indians at AutoZone Park in Memphis, 5-1. The preseason exhibition, which will become a regular-season game in 2009, is designed to celebrate and honor baseball’s historical role in the nation’s civil rights movement.

2008    Outside of Wrigley Field, the Cubs unveil the seven-foot bronze sculpture of Ernie Banks by 46-year-old Lou Cella, a passionate fan who idolized Mr. Cub as a kid. The typographical error on the statue’s granite base, “Lets play two,” is quickly corrected when the sculptor comes down to the ballpark two days later and carves the needed apostrophe.

2008    The Reds pay tribute to Joe Nuxhall by wearing 41 on their uniforms on Opening Day. The team’s beloved broadcaster, who spent over 60 years with the organization, including his major debut as a 15-year-old hurler, died during the off-season at 79.

2009    Gary Sheffield is unexpectedly released by the Tigers, despite having $14 million left on his $28 million, two-year contract extension given to him after being acquired from the Yankees in a trade for prospects. The 40-year-old DH/outfielder, a nine-time All-Star, needing one more dinger to become the 25th major league player to hit 500 career home runs, reaches the milestone as a pinch-hitter in a Mets uniform on April 17 at Citi Field.

2010    In the first inning of an exhibition game in Tampa, Denard Span hits a hard foul line drive that strikes his mother while watching him play. The Twins’ stunned leadoff batter runs into the crowded stands, staying with his mom while paramedics treat her until she returns to her seat, slightly shaken but intact.

2011    Down to their final out on Opening Day, Cameron Maybin, acquired by the Padres in the offseason from the Marlins for Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb, hits a game-tying homer off Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin. San Diego wins the game two innings later on three successive two-out hits, including their new centerfielder’s knock for the go-ahead run in the team’s eventual 5-3 victory at Busch Stadium.

2013    In their American League debut, the Astros beat the Rangers, 8-3, in a nationally televised game at Minute Maid Park. After 51 years in the National League, Houston agreed to move from the NL Central to the AL West to give each league 15 teams, with an equal number in each division, as a condition for the approval of the team’s sale to Jim Crane.

2013    Shintaro Fujinami, a first-round draft selection, sets a record for players drafted out of high school when he makes his first professional start, a game sooner than Daisuke Matsuzaka (1999) and Hideaki Wakui (2005), pitching for the Hanshin Tigers just three games into the season. The 18-year-old Japanese rookie right-hander will allow two runs in six innings, taking the loss in the team’s 2-0 loss against Tokyo Yakult Swallows at Jingu Stadium.

2014    A video review, which takes 58 seconds, overturns an umpire’s decision using MLB’s expanded replay system for the first time. Brewers’ outfielder Ryan Braun, initially called safe by first base by ump Greg Gibson, on a sixth-inning leadoff infield single, is ruled out after the Braves manager, Fredi Gonzalez, challenges the play.

2014    Don Baylor, Anaheim’s hitting coach, suffers a freak accident, fracturing his right femur while backhanding the low and away ceremonial first pitch from Vladimir Guerrero, the team’s former outfielder, who had just signed a one-day contract on the field, much to the crowd’s delight. Guerrero spent six seasons of his 16-year major league tenure with the Halos and was named the AL MVP in 2004, his first year with the team, joining Baylor (1979) as the only other player in franchise history to win the award.

2014    Pittsburgh native Neil Walker sends the largest regular-season crowd in the 14-year history of PNC Park home happy when he hits a Carlos Villanueva change-up over the fence, giving the Pirates a 1-0 walk-off victory over the Cubs. The tenth-inning homer marks the first time since 1965, when Bob Bailey went deep off Giants’ right-hander Juan Marichal, that a Buc player ended a scoreless Opening Day contest with a solo round-trip.

2018    Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who goes 3-for-4 in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field, becomes the first American Leaguer to have multiple extra-base hits in the season’s first three games. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez also accomplished the feat, collecting at least two safeties in LA’s first three contests when he compiled ten hits in his first 14 at-bats, starting the 2015 campaign.

2019    Homering off Michael Wacha in the bottom of the first inning, Christian Yelich becomes the fifth major leaguer to homer in the first four games to begin the season. The Brewers’ 27-year-old left fielder joins Willie Mays (1971 Giants), Mark McGwire (1998 Cardinals), Nelson Cruz (2011 Rangers), and Trevor Story (2013, 2016 Rockies) in accomplishing the task.
