The Wildcats (36-2) won their 13th straight game by erasing a seven-point halftime deficit and ending a five-game skid in Elite Eight games. They had lost in the regional finals in 2003, 2005, 2011, 2014 and 2015. Peat was 9 of 18 from the field, breaking Mike Bibby’s school record for most points in the Elite Eight by an Arizona freshman. Kharchenkov was 7 of 11 from the field and added eight rebounds, while Jaden Bradley and Brayden Burries each scored 14. Purdue (30-9) got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Oscar Cluff and 13 points and seven assists from Braden Smith, who scored 11 in the first half but was just 4 of 15 from the field for the game. The Boilermakers made 7 of 14 3-pointers in the first half but were just 1 of 8 after halftime. The Boilermakers led 38-31 at halftime, outscoring Arizona 26-12 after being down seven early. The Wildcats scored seven straight to tie at 42, then took a 44-43 lead on two Jaden Bradley free throws with 14:34 remaining. The Boilermakers went more than four and a half minutes without a field goal and Arizona extended to a 51-45 edge on an Anthony Dell’Orso 3-pointer with 12:09 to go. The Wildcats got the margin to 10 with 8:46 remaining, and Peat’s dunk made it 68-55 with 5:35 to go. Purdue took a 10-9 lead with 15:44 left in the first half on a Smith 3, significant because it was the first time in the tournament that Arizona trailed. The Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run to build a 19-12 lead, and during that run, Trey Kaufman-Renn picked up his second foul. A 3 by Gicarri Harris gave the Boilermakers back the lead, and later back-to-back 3s by Smith and CJ Cox put them up 33-27 with 2:33 left before halftime. NO. 3 ILLINOIS OUTLASTS CONFERENCE RIVAL IOWA TO HEAD BACK TO FINAL FOUR HOUSTON — Freshman Keaton Wagler scored a game-high 25 points, Andrej Stojakovic added 17 off the bench, and third-seeded Illinois secured its first Final Four berth in 21 years with a 71-59 victory over Big Ten rival Iowa on Saturday in the South Region final of the NCAA Tournament. Illinois (28-8) seized control of a back-and-forth second half with a 10-1 run that yielded a 60-52 lead with 4:06 left. The ninth-seeded Hawkeyes (24-13) and Illinois combined for 13 lead changes and seven ties in the second half until the Fighting Illini took control, first with consecutive post baskets from Tomislav Ivisic. Then, Wagler and Stojakovic finished the job. Stojakovic completed a three-point play with 3:16 left to answer a 3-pointer from Isaia Howard and extend the Illinois lead to 63-55. After Stojakovic added a baseline layup, Wagler converted a pair of free throws with 1:12 remaining to build the lead to 67-59. Stojakovic added five rebounds to his ledger while Wagler finished 7 of 7 from the line and added three assists. David Mirkovic posted nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Illinois finished with a 38-21 rebounding advantage and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points. Bennett Stirtz paced the Hawkeyes with 24 points while Sage chipped in 10. Iowa shot just 23.1% in the second half after making 12 of 21 shots before the intermission. Stojakovic and Wagler helped the Illini overcome a ragged start that resulted in an early double-digit deficit. While Illinois missed its first four shots, Iowa started 5 of 6 and seized a 12-2 lead by the 15:56 mark of the first half, with Combs and Stirtz scoring five points apiece. But Stojakovic got the Illini going with a second-chance basket, a steal and transition layup through a foul that sliced the deficit to 12-11. Stirtz stalled Illinois’ 9-0 spurt with a pull-up jumper and, after a lengthy delay when the horn stuck with 7:43 left in the half, Stirtz pushed Iowa to a 27-20 lead with consecutive baskets. When Illinois clawed back to within 27-26, Sage drilled a 3-pointer that extended the Iowa lead to four, an advantage the Hawkeyes held at the intermission. The Illini shot just 37% in the first half but turned 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points to offset the Hawkeyes’ 57.1% shooting, including 6 of 12 from behind the arc. ================================================================== WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL MARTA SUAREZ SCORES 33 AS TCU UPENDS VIRGINIA IN SWEET 16 Marta Suarez scored a career-high 33 points, Olivia Miles added 28 points in a near triple-double and third-seeded TCU ended Virginia’s magical NCAA Tournament run with a 79-69 victory in the Sweet 16 in Sacramento on Saturday. Miles had 10 rebounds and eight assists and Suarez had 10 rebounds as the Horned Frogs (32-5) overcame a one-point halftime deficit by scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter to take control. The Horned Frogs will make their second straight Elite Eight appearance when they meet top-seeded South Carolina on Monday. Suarez had 13 points in the third quarter, when Miles had six assists and four rebounds as the Frogs pushed their lead to 15. The 10th-seeded Cavaliers did not get closer than eight until the final 31 seconds. Miles’ two free throws with 26.1 seconds left for a 77-69 lead clinched it. She is one of four Division I players with at least 600 points, 250 rebounds and 100 assists. Paris Clark had 20 points and Kymora Johnson had 18 for the Cavaliers (22-12), the lowest seed to reach the Sweet 16 since 2022. Clara Silva had eight points and eight rebounds for TCU, which had a 38-29 edge on the boards and limited Virginia to 41% shooting. Virginia led by seven late in the first quarter. TCU took a 35-33 lead with 1:09 left in the first half, when Suarez made a free throw after Romi Levy was called for a Flagrant 1 foul for pulling Miles down as she drove to the basket. Clark’s three-point play gave the Cavaliers a 36-35 lead at halftime. TA’NIYA LATSON SCORES 28 AS SOUTH CAROLINA BLOWS OUT OKLAHOMA Ta’Niya Latson scored 28 points to help top-seed South Carolina beat fourth-seeded Oklahoma 94-68 in a Sweet 16 matchup Saturday in Sacramento. Latson set the tone from the start, scoring eight points during the Gamecocks’ 10-0 run to start the game. South Carolina will take on the winner of Saturday’s TCU-Virginia matchup Monday. The Gamecocks (34-3) are looking for their sixth consecutive Final Four appearance. South Carolina lost the regular-season matchup between the teams 94-82 in overtime Jan. 22. In their NCAA Tournament matchup, though, the Gamecocks never gave the Sooners a chance for any kind of a late push. Latson helped make sure of that, hitting a jumper on the opening possession, nailing a 3-pointer shortly thereafter, then hitting three free throws after being fouled less than three minutes into the game to put her team up 10-0. Oklahoma briefly cut the deficit to six, but after the first quarter, South Carolina’s lead never dipped below double figures. Latson finished 7 of 11 from the floor with five assists. The Gamecocks shot 50.7% from the floor. Raven Johnson added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and Tessa Johnson scored 14. The Sooners (26-8) were led by freshman Aaliyah Chavez, who had 21 points. Oklahoma finished with a season-low nine assists, while South Carolina had 21 on 34 field goals. TEXAS DOESN’T MESS AROUND, DOMINATES KENTUCKY IN SWEET 16 Jordan Lee scored 18, Madison Booker had 17 and Rori Harmon nearly recorded a triple-double as top-seeded Texas knocked off fifth-seeded Kentucky 76-54 in a Sweet 16 matchup Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas. The Longhorns advanced to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive season. They’ll take on Michigan, the No. 2 seed, on Monday with a Final Four berth on the line. Lee helped Texas (34-3) grab control early scoring eight points during a 15-0 first-quarter run. She was the only double-digit scorer of the first half with 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting. After missing their first three shots, the Longhorns hit 12 of their next 14 to build a double-digit lead that remained for the rest of the game.Games Texas got a scare in the opening quarter though when Harmon suffered a hand injury and went to the bench for a stretch. Though Harmon was clearly affected by the injury, she returned and was a force, hitting a jumper seconds after returning and fueling the Longhorns’ defense. She finished the game making five of her 10 shots. She finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals with just one turnover. The Longhorns built their lead as big as 25 in the second quarter, but the Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 15 early in the fourth quarter before Texas responded with nine consecutive points to put the game away for good. Kentucky (25-11) was led by Clara Strack, who scored 16 points, and Asia Boone who tallied 11 points. Teonni Key nearly chipped in a double-double with 10 points, albeit on 2 of 8 shooting, and nine rebounds. MICHIGAN REGROUPS, ROLLS PAST LOUISVILLE TO REACH ELITE EIGHT Olivia Olson scored eight of her 19 points in the third quarter to help second-seeded Michigan pull away for a 72-51 victory over third-seeded Louisville on Saturday in a Fort Worth 3 regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament. Syla Swords scored 16 points, Te’Yala Delfosse added 10 and Brooke Q. Daniels added nine rebounds for the Wolverines. Michigan (28-6) overcame a slow start to reach the second Elite Eight in program history. The Wolverines found momentum after missing their first six shots and finally scoring with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter after an early 8-0 deficit. Elif Istanbulluoglu scored 18 points with seven rebounds and Reyna Scot added nine points for the Cardinals (29-8), who were playing in their 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament. Louisville established a 25-14 lead on a jumper by Istanbulluoglu with 6:53 remaining in the first half. Michigan took over from there, ending the half by outscoring Louisville 18-2, with Delfosse scoring eight points during the run. The Cardinals grabbed a pair of slim leads in the third quarter, only to be overwhelmed when the Wolverines dominated in a stretch when they scored 23 of 27 points. Swords started the outburst with a 3-pointer. Swords also scored eight points in the third quarter as the Wolverines shot 46.7% from the floor overall. They shot a combined 61.3% (19 of 31) in the second and third quarters. Istanbulluoglu was 8 of 12 from the floor but Louisville finished 35.4% overall, its third worst this season. The Cardinals were 21.4% (3 of 14) from 3-point range, their second-worst on the season. Michigan will seek its first ever Final Four berth when it faces Texas or Kentucky on Monday at Fort Worth. ================================================================= NBA NBA ROUNDUP: FORTIFIED 76ERS COOL OFF HORNETS Joel Embiid had 29 points and made a big block in the final seconds as the Philadelphia 76ers rallied from 15 points down to edge the host Charlotte Hornets 118-114 on Saturday. Smith’s home run, a 386-foot shot to right-center field, came with one out against Royals closer Carlos Estevez (0-1), who failed to hold a 2-0 lead. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Smith became the first player to hit a walk-off grand slam in his team debut. In the ninth, Drake Baldwin walked to lead off, took third on Matt Olson’s single and scored on Mike Yastrzemski’s one-out single. After Ozzie Albies walked, Jorge Mateo — running for Olson — scored the tying run when Michael Harris II lined a single. The winning pitcher was Osvaldo Bido (1-0), who struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth. Bednar recorded his second save in as many games for the Yankees, who outscored the Giants 13-1 in the series and turned four inning-ending double plays in the finale. Jake Bird (1-0), one of four New York relievers, earned the victory with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Padres 3, Tigers 0 Randy Vasquez fired six shutout innings as host San Diego beat Detroit and avoided a season-opening, three-game sweep. Vasquez allowed just two hits, both to third baseman Cole Keith, while walking three and striking out eight, one shy of his career high. Kyle Hart followed with two perfect innings and Mason Miller worked the ninth to earn the save. It was the first win for Craig Stammen, the Padres’ first-year manager. Jack Flaherty absorbed the loss for the Tigers, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) over 4 1/3 innings. Flaherty walked four and whiffed two. Marlins 4, Rockies 3 Rookie Owen Caissie drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and Liam Hicks posted three RBIs as Miami rallied to defeat visiting Colorado. Pete Fairbanks, acquired as an offseason free agent, earned his second save in two games for the Marlins. Caissie, acquired in January from the Cubs as part of the package for Edward Cabrera, went 3-for-4 with a double, a steal and one RBI. Hicks had a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly. Games Colorado hit a pair of homers: a two-run shot by Ezequiel Tovar and TJ Rumfield’s solo blast. Rumfield’s homer was the first of his major-league career in just his second game. Calvin Faucher (1-0) earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief. Jaden Hill (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run and two hits in 1 2/3 innings. ==================================================================== NHL NHL ROUNDUP: CAPS STORM BACK, HAND KNIGHTS SHOOTOUT LOSS Dylan Strome scored the tying goal in the third period and the game-winner in the shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Strome, who hit the post on the first shot of the game, tied it at 4-all midway through the period with a power-play tally, one-timing a shot from the middle of the right circle to snap a 17-game goal drought. He then scored the only goal of the shootout at the start of the first round, roofing a backhand shot past Adin Hill. Justin Sourdif had a goal and an assist, Cole Hutson had two assists and Hendrix Lapierre and Anthony Beauvillier also scored goals for Washington, which is four points back of the second and final wild card in the Eastern Conference. Stars 6, Penguins 3 Miko Rantanen scored in his first game in nearly two months, and Dallas tallied three unanswered second-period goals to end a four-game skid and defeat host Pittsburgh. Rantanen and Jason Robertson each had a goal and an assist for Dallas, which had gone 0-3-1 in its last four. Rookie Justin Hryckowian, Lian Bichsel and Mavrik Bourque also scored for the Stars, who swept the two-game season series with Pittsburgh after winning in Dallas in December. Canadiens 4, Predators 1 Jacob Fowler stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced to help Montreal kick off its critical five-game road trip with a victory in Nashville. Cole Caufield continued his chase for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer when he found the back of the net for his 45th goal of the season for the Canadiens. Ivan Demidov, Oliver Kapanen and Alex Newhook all picked up a goal and an assist, while Nick Suzuki finished with a pair of assists as Montreal secured its fourth consecutive win. Zachary L’Heureux ended Fowler’s shutout bid late in the third with a lucky goal as the puck bounced off the stanchion and on his stick with an open net in front of him. Juuse Saros made 28 saves for the Predators. Sabres 3, Kraken 2 (SO) Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 32 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopped both attempts in the shootout, helping Buffalo rally for a victory against visiting Seattle. Blues 5, Maple Leafs 1 St. Louis continued its dominant March with a thumping of visiting Toronto. The win marked St. Louis’ fourth in a row as they improved their March record to an NHL-best 10-1-2. The Blues scored three in the third after Jake McCabe brought it back within one for the visitors. Dylan Holloway had a two-point game, while Jake Neighbours, Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas also had multi-point games . Jordan Binnington stopped 12 of just 13 shots for the Blues while Joseph Woll turned away 33 of 38 shots for the Maple Leafs. Mammoth 6, Kings 2 Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley each scored twice as visiting Utah thumped Los Angeles. Utah, in the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference, holds a five-point lead over the Nashville Predators, owners of the second wild-card position. Los Angeles remains on the outside looking in, a point back of Nashville in the wild-card race. Nick Schmaltz and Jack McBain also scored for Utah, while Mikhail Sergachev had four assists and Clayton Keller chipped in a pair of helpers and Karel Vejmelka made 29 saves. Calgary has won 55 consecutive games when scoring four or more goals, the fifth-longest run in league history. Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 31 saves. Liam Ohgren, Jake DeBrusk and Nils Hoglander replied for the Canucks, who sit at the bottom of the league standings and have lost five straight. Kevin Lankinen stopped nine of 12 shots in relief. =============================================================== GOLF HYO JOO KIM SETS 54-HOLE RECORD IN TAKING CONTROL OF FORD CHAMPIONSHIP South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim took an emphatic step toward defending her title at the Ford Championship on Saturday, setting an LPGA 54-hole record to build a four-stroke lead in Chandler, Ariz. Despite that hot start, Kim is focused on keeping her approach consistent on Sunday. “This course, anyone is capable of scoring low, so I will continue to just focus on the same game plan that I did today,” Kim said. If that focus nets similar results, Kim will be in historic territory. On Saturday, Kim matched her first-day, 11-under-par 61 to put her at 25 under for the tournament, a pace through 54 holes that is the best in LPGA history. Her 25-under stretch broke the previous record held by four players by one stroke. Her bogey-free round included birdies on four of her first seven holes before she exceeded that hot start with four straight holes under par on Nos. 10-13. That stretch included an eagle on the par-5 No. 12. Kim finished her remarkable day at the Cattail Course at Whirlwind Golf Club with birdies on 16 and 17, giving her nine birdies and an eagle on the day. “I play with my mind, just focusing on one shot at a time,” Kim said. “When I think about the shots, whether it’s striking a certain distance or how I play, I just focus on each at a time.” Kim’s closest pursuer, unsurprisingly, is World No. 2 Nelly Korda, who led after two rounds and carded a 5-under 67 on Saturday to get to 21 under. The pair have seen a lot of each other of late, playing in the same group over five straight rounds. Kim kept Korda at bay in last week’s Founders Cup to win by a single stroke in Menlo Park, Calif. “Nelly is my favorite player,” Kim said. “It’s been great playing together. You know, it’s been great playing with her, competing with her and it’s just been fun overall.” Korda’s day included five birdies and no bogeys. “I’m never going to complain about a bogey-free round and 5-under, so it was a solid one,” Korda said. Korda herself has a healthy lead over her closest competitors, as five golfers are tied at 16 under, five strokes behind Korda (and nine behind Kim). That group consists of England’s Mimi Rhodes (63 on Saturday), Japan’s Chizzy Iwai (67), South Korea’s Ina Yoon (67), Japan’s Minami Katsu (69) and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko (69). STEWART CINK LEADS AT HOAG AFTER ALBATROSS ON 18 Stewart Cink ended the Hoag Classic’s second day with as great a flourish as possible, scoring a two-shot albatross on the par-5 18th, giving him a two-shot lead at 14 under at Newport Beach (Calif.) Country Club. “It was a heck of a walk-off,” Cink said. Cink nailed a great drive, then sank a 205-yarder using his 6-iron. The veteran golfer said later he knew he hit his second shot well, but he wasn’t sure on location until the crowd reacted. Cink then reacted himself, posing to flex his muscles to cap off his 9-under-par 62. “That’s not something we practice. That’s a rare thing that happens,” Cink said of his celebration following the conclusion of his round. “We try not to let the results matter, but when you get a result like that especially at the end of the day, I don’t have to hit another shot, I can’t mess up the next hole. “So, that’s a cool moment to have happen right there on the 18th hole with the crowd. This is a great crowd here.” Cink’s big moment overshadowed a great day overall for the five-time Champions tourney winner. Cink also had seven birdies while suffering a single bogey. That left Cink two shots ahead of the field. Closest in pursuit are Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson and New Zealand’s Steven Alker, who shot matching 66’s and are tied for second at 12 under. “I love the course and I also love the area. It’s beautiful,” Jacobson raved about his surroundings. “Tried to swing down by the ocean, we might be looking at hopefully some surfing on Monday. Try to sneak that in.” South Africa’s Ernie Els and Tim Petrovic each carded a 65 to remain tied at 11 under in fourth place. Four golfers are tied for sixth at 10 under: David Toms (66), Australia’s Cameron Percy (66), Bo Van Pelt (67) and Brian Gay (69). Day 1 leader Paul Goydos had a rough day, weathering four bogeys while netting a solitary birdie to settle for a 3-over 74, dropping him into a tie for 21st. Reigning champion Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain built off a 1-under 70 Friday to go 7 under on Saturday (64), lifting him into a tie for 12th at 8 under. GARY WOODLAND NEARING 1ST VICTORY SINCE 2019 AT TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOUSTON OPEN Now it’s about finishing the task for Gary Woodland in the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He shot 5-under-par 65 on Saturday to maintain the lead through three rounds as he seeks his first victory in nearly seven years in Houston. “I’m here, I put myself in this position for a reason, so take a deep breath and maintain what I’m doing,” Woodland said. Woodland is at 18-under despite his highest score of the tournament Saturday. Hard-charging Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark posted the best round of the day with a 63, so he’s one stroke back going into Sunday’s final round at Memorial Park Golf Course. “There’s still a lot of players in the field that can win the tournament,” Hojgaard said. “But, obviously, Gary and I have a good chance. I’m going to go out, try to build up the round like I did today.” Hojgaard has never won on the PGA Tour in 62 previous tournaments. His last international tournament title came in 2023. Woodland tied for second place in the tournament a year ago. The galleries have been supportive this week, and he has noticed. “Crowd (has) been amazing,” Woodland said. “Energy was so good. Definitely helped me. Something I fed off of and hopefully that’s the same (Sunday).” Woodland had four birdies on a six-hole stretch on the backside to maintain the lead. The last three of those birdies came with putts inside of 7 feet. “Once I settled in, I hit some great shots on the back nine,” Woodland said. “It was a good fight, for sure.” Hojgaard also was 4-under on that same six-hole stretch, with a 14-foot putt his longest birdie among those holes. Both golfers had pars on No. 18. “The course is playing into my strengths,” Hojgaard said. “Good driving length off the tee and approach play, and then I felt like I had good pace with the putter all day.” Defending champion Min Woo Lee of Australia shot 67 to sit at 12-under, joined by Michael Thorbjornsen (66). Lee might be a long shot to make up enough ground, but he hasn’t dismissed that from happening. “Just got to stick to the process and hopefully make a lot of birdies,” Lee said. “You’ll probably need help from them to come backwards. I think I’m in the final group, so I’ll have a nice show (Sunday).” As one of the highlights from Saturday, Lee took a bunker shot on one knee on No. 17, rolling the ball close enough for a birdie putt. “It wasn’t the most pleasing lie when I first got there,” Lee said. “It was nearly very unplayable because it was on such a steep hill. Luckily, I’m somewhat flexible and I can get low and, yeah, play that shot.” Combined with the 16th hole, that gave Lee birdies on consecutive holes for the second time during the round. Thorbjornsen said he has been encouraged by his play this week. “I think we’re just trying to play smart golf, play to the numbers, just whatever will produce the best score on average,” Thorbjornsen said. “That’s kind of the strategy we’re going to take.” Sam Stevens (67) and Australia’s Jason Day (68) are at 11-under. First-round leader Paul Waring of England moved back into contention by shooting 66. He’s at 10-under with Sahith Theegala (66) and Canada’s Sudarshan Yellamaraju (65). ================================================================ AUTO RACING DENNY HAMLIN EDGES WILLIAM BYRON TO WIN POLE AT MARTINSVILLE MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin claimed the 49th Busch Light Pole Award of his career Saturday afternoon, claiming the number one starting spot for Sunday’s Cook Out 400 (3:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Martinsville Speedway, a track where he has long established himself as one of the best. Hamlin’s JGR No. 11 Toyota turned a lap of 98.241 mph around the half-mile Martinsville oval — .056-second faster than another one of the track’s recent best performers, William Byron in the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. They will lead the field to green on Sunday, with Hamlin racing for his second victory of the season and Byron hoping to put a Chevrolet in victory lane for the first time in 2026. “I knew it was possible simply from where my car was in practice,” said Hamlin who now has five career Martinsville pole awards. “Any time you’ve got fast lap speed in practice here that’s in the top 12, you’re close enough there that qualifying trim doesn’t change your car that much.” “You’ve got enough speed to where you nail it and do a good enough job as a driver you’ve got a chance at the pole, so I knew it was very possible but truthfully, I approached the lap to get in the top eight. I think I’d go faster if I went and did it again right now, but I think I’ll go on and stand on my time,” he added with a smile. Hamlin now ties Bobby Issac for the 10th most pole awards in cup series history, a mark that genuinely seemed to surprise Hamlin, who answered questions about it with an immediate and competitive response, “Who has the next most on the list?” Ryan Newman is next with 51. “I never really go into any weekend thinking about qualifying on pole, it’s really kind of a sidebar to how my Saturday goes,” Hamlin said. “It’s pretty awesome, and really, with age, the hardest part is actually still having a fast time. It’s one thing to be able to manage races and use your experience to your advantage. But usually, the first thing to go is your raw speed and we’re still knocking off poles, which is really good.” Wood Brothers Racing’s Josh Berry was third quickest in the No. 21 Ford and will share the second row with Hamlin’s JGR teammate Ty Gibbs in the No. 54 Toyota. Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen turned an impressive oval qualifying effort with a fifth-place showing in the No. 97 Chevrolet. Austin Cindric, Carson Hocevar, championship leader Tyler Reddick, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott round out the top 10 in the starting grid. ================================================================== INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES INDIANA PACERS GAME PREVIEW: PACERS VS HEAT The Indiana Pacers will close out a three-game homestand Sunday, and can clinch their regular-season series against the Miami Heat with a victory. Indiana (16-58) and Miami (39-35) have split their first two games this season, with the Pacers most recently defending home court with a 123-99 win on Jan. 10. The Pacers enter the matchup coming off a last-second loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. After leading for most of the game against Los Angeles, the Clippers stormed back in the fourth quarter, retaking the lead with 0.4 seconds left on an eight-foot jumper by seven-time NBA All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard. In a bizarre sequence following the basket, both teams were fouled on separate plays in the closing moments and shot free throws. However, neither side converted, so the score did not change. Aaron Nesmith led the Pacers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, Obi Toppin added 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Andrew Nembhard recorded 13 points and 10 assists for his 12th double-double of the season. Toppin, who has played in just 15 games this season due to a foot injury, had a season-best for points in a game. Over his last 10 games, Nesmith is averaging 17.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Nembhard has also performed well in his last 10 outings, averaging 15.2 points, 8.8 assists, and 2.7 rebounds. Indiana will be glad to wrap up March, as the Pacers are just 1-13 this month with one game remaining. The Pacers have lost 11 straight home games, which is the longest home losing streak in franchise history. The Pacers’ last win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse was on Jan. 31 against Atlanta. Miami heads to Indianapolis after a 149-128 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers (46-28) on Friday night at Rocket Arena. The Heat currently sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, but could still move up several spots before the postseason. Led by Norman Powell (22.2 points per game), Tyler Herro (21.3), and Bam Adebayo (20.3), the Heat rank second in scoring this season, averaging 120.3 points per game. Miami plays at the fastest pace in the league and ranks third in rebounds per game at 46.6. Against Cleveland, Jaime Jaquez Jr., a Sixth Man of the Year candidate, scored a team-high 20 points off the bench, while Adebayo posted 14 points and 16 rebounds and Powell added 15 points. After a hot start to the month, the Heat have lost six of their last seven games. The Pacers, already eliminated from postseason contention, have eight games remaining. After facing the Heat, Indiana will begin a three-game road trip Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls. Heat center Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a single game on March 10 in a win over the Washington Wizards, which ranks second-best in league history behind Wilt Chamberlin’s legendary 100-point performance. The Pacers are 77-59 against the Heat all-time in regular season contests. Former Indiana University standout Ke’Lel Ware was drafted by the Heat with the 15th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. PAUL INDIANAPOLIS – Dominic Fletcher launched the Indianapolis Indians first home run of the season and Alika Williams recorded two extra-base hits with two RBI in a 9-7 loss to the St. Paul Saints on Saturday afternoon at Victory Field. Ryan Kreidler and Kyler Fedko opened the scoring for the Saints (2-0) in the second inning, each recording an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Fletcher then put the Indians (0-2) on the board with a 394-foot solo shot in the third inning off St. Paul starter Zebby Matthews. Konnor Griffin kickstarted a game-tying rally later in the inning, beating out an infield single, stealing second base and scampering home on a run-scoring single from Ronny Simon. Indy took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning with complimentary baseball across the lineup. Enmanuel Valdez walked to start the rush, with Termarr Johnson dropping a sacrifice bunt to advance him. Esmerlyn Valdez singled to put runners at the corners and Fletcher struck again with an RBI double down the line, and Williams capped the flurry with a two-run triple to the wall in deep left-center field. St. Paul quickly punched back with a three-run, game-tying home run from Kaelen Culpepper in the top of the fifth for a 5-5 score. The Saints tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning off reliever Mike Clevinger, and the Indians again knotted the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the eighth inning. Coming into the game, Hartford had only allowed one goal in its first three matches. The Boys in Blue started the second half quickly in the 48th minute, with forward Bruno Rendon making a long run down the left sideline into the area, where he played it forward to midfielder Cam Lindley, who played a perfect cross to the far post, with midfielder Noble Okello finishing it with his left foot to even the match at 1-1. It is the 31st career assist for Lindley in USL-C regular-season play, good for a tie for 22nd on the league’s all-time list. Indy Eleven took the lead in the 72nd minute, with goalkeeper Eric Dick starting the sequence with a goal kick to midfield, where Okello was fouled. Lindley hurried to play a quick restart to midfielder Josh O’Brien, who played an angled ball to Mikah Thomas on the left side. Thomas, who entered a minute earlier, played three quick touches and curled a beautiful left-footed ball to the far post, where Rendon finished for his team-best second goal this season (both in the last two matches). The last Boys in Blue player to score a goal in back-to-back USL-C matches was captain Aodhan Quinn in September. It was the first USL Championship assist for Thomas, who played collegiately at nearby UConn. Defender Anthony Herbert made a brilliant sliding block to clear an Augi Williams shot off the line in the 87th minute, but Hartford got the equalizer on an own goal off the ensuing free kick. The Boys in Blue had an early chance in the sixth minute when defender Hayden White made a long throw-in to defender Paco Craig, who headed it inside the area to Herbert, but his shot was saved. Hartford countered immediately, but Dick saved Sadat Anaku’s shot from close range. Boys in Blue forward Loïc Mesanvi made his first USL Championship start, generating an opportunity from outside the box that was saved. The Indy Eleven attack generated eight shots in the first half, with Mesanvi recording a team-high three. Indy Eleven has two home games at Carroll Stadium next week–Tue. Two free passes, an error and five hits allowed Nebraska (21-6, 7-1 B1G) to break the game open. The home team would eventually finish off a 12-7 win to secure the series in Lincoln. Freshman pinch hitter Owen ten Oever gave IU life in the sixth inning with a three-run home run, his second base knock of the weekend. IU got within one run on a bases-loaded walk from sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian but stranded three ducks on the pond with a groundout from sophomore outfielder Cole Decker. A brilliant sixth-inning performance with no outs and the bases loaded helped junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry give momentum back to the visitors. But his second inning of work didn’t go as planned. Nebraska jumped him for seven runs, all of them with two outs in the frame. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Pete Haas came on and finally got the final out. As it has been all year, self-inflicted mistakes cost the Hoosiers a chance to win the ballgame. IU’s pitchers handed out 13 free passes (eight walks, five hit-by-pitches) while the offense was just 2-12 (.167) with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base. IU will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow (March 29) when it sends sophomore southpaw Brayton Thomas to the bump. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. Scoring Recap Bottom First Nebraska opened the scoring with a bases-loaded walk from Dylan Carey. Cole Kitchens hit a sacrifice fly to center field to add a second run. Jett Buck added a third on an RBI fielder’s choice. Drew Grego plated a pair on a two-run single with two outs. Nebraska 12, Indiana 4 Top Eighth Caleb Koskie and Jake Hanley each walked with the bases loaded. That set up Brayden Ricketts for a sacrifice fly to score a third run in the frame. Notes to Know • IU walked 13 times in the ballgame. Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one walk while three guys were put on multiple times. It’s the most walks that the Hoosiers have worked in a game since a contest against Fordham (14 – Feb. 22, 2025) last season. • Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie recorded a base knock in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. It’s by far the longest active streak on the team and is the longest in the career of the young outfielder. He has recorded 10 hits in the last 10 games for the Hoosiers. • Sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian recorded his second multi-hit game of the series. He’s up to 84 base knocks in 81 games of college baseball and has worked his season batting average back up to .287. In his two-year career, Malamazian is a .308 hitter for head coach Jeff Mercer. Willsey followed with her second solo homer of the contest to make it an 8-0 score. Just when it looked like the Aces would cruise to the shutout, the Bulldogs staged a rally. Ava Husak ended the shutout with a 2-run home run as Drake scored four in the bottom of the fifth. Bode got one of the runs back with a solo shot in the sixth as the score was 9-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs plated three runs and looked to do more damage as they loaded the bases with two outs. Kate Ridgway entered the game and picked up the final our on a fly ball to left as she earned the save. Tucker earned the win allowing three runs, two earned, in 4 1/3 innings of work. The offense erupted for 13 hits including six home runs. Willsey went 3-4 with two solo home runs while Bode had a 3-for-5 day with a solo homer, three runs, and two RBI. Piggott and Howe added two hits apiece. ============================================================== SOUTHERN INDIANA BASEBALL USI LOSES GAME TWO AT LITTLE ROCK, 6-0 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball was shut out by Little Rock in the second game in the series, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock, Arkansas. USI is 17-10 this season and 3-2 in the OVC, while Little Rock falls to 16-11, 4-1 OVC. Little Rock struck first and often in the first two frames, scoring once in the first and three-times in the second to take a 4-0 lead. USI junior right-hander Ryan Weller (2-1) was charged with all four of the runs, going 2.1 innings in taking the loss. The score would remain 4-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Trojans upped the margin to the eventual final score of 6-0 with a pair of tallies. USI was limited to six hits in the contest, led by senior catcher Micajah Wall, who had a pair of hits. Up Next for the Screaming Eagles: The Screaming Eagles conclude at Little Rock Sunday at 1 p.m. ==================================================================== VALPO SOFTBALL SOFTBALL SPLITS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER WITH SYCAMORES For the third straight weekend, the Valpo softball team opened its Missouri Valley Conference series with a victory, taking down Indiana State in the series opener at the Valpo Softball Complex by a 5-2 final. The Beacons were within two outs of completing the twinbill sweep before the Sycamores connected on a seventh-inning home run to earn a 3-2 win. How It Happened – Game One The Sycamores used two walks and a run-scoring single to take the lead in the top of the first. After another free pass, ISU had the bases loaded with one out looking for more, but Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) got a pop-up and a ground ball to keep the Sycamores from adding to their opening tally. Valpo responded in a big way in its first turn at the plate. Madison Vrastil (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) beat out an infield single to open the frame and then advanced to second two batters later on an ISU error, which put two runners on base for Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]). The cleanup hitter took full advantage, hitting a deep fly to left that sent Morgan Goodrich back to the fence. Goodrich reached up at the barrier, but the ball hit off her glove and fell on the far side for a three-run homer for Gallagher, putting Valpo in front, 3-1. The Beacons got some key insurance in the bottom of the fourth. Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]) drew a one-out walk and Grace Hollopeter (Lake Village, Ind./North Newton [Purdue Fort Wayne]) followed with a first-pitch double to put two in scoring position for Vrastil. The sophomore promptly lined the first pitch she saw into the right-center gap to plate a pair of runs, pushing the lead to 5-1. Meanwhile, McDermott was strong in the circle after the first inning, as no ISU baserunner made it past second base from the second through sixth innings. In the seventh, the Sycamores plated a run when a leadoff triple was followed by a sacrifice fly. After a subsequent walk, Lopez was called upon to get the final two outs and did so with a pair of strikeouts to close out the win. How It Happened – Game Two The game was scoreless through three innings, thanks in large part to a nice defensive play from Cadan Brinkman (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community [Campbell/Wofford]) at third base in the top of the third. With two on and no out, Brinkman charged to grab a sacrifice attempt in the air and was able to double off the runner at first base. ISU opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, as three consecutive two-out singles plated the first run. With two on and two out, Lopez reared back and got a key strikeout to limit the Sycamores to the one run. After their first 10 batters of the game had been set down in order, the Beacons got their first baserunner in the fourth inning on a one-out triple from Kayden Krug (Milford, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). After the second out was recorded, it looked like ISU was preparing to intentionally walk Gallagher, but the first intentional ball was nowhere near where the catcher was expecting it and went all the way to the backstop, as Krug scampered home with the tying run. Another chaotic situation in the bottom of the fifth allowed Valpo to pull ahead. Addie Young (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) drew a four-pitch pinch-hit walk to lead off the inning. The first pitch to the next hitter was mishandled by the Sycamore catcher and Young took off for second. The catcher’s throw down sailed over second base, and with ISU’s center fielder playing in with a slapper at the plate, she didn’t have the reaction time or the angle to keep the throw from going all the way to the fence and Young easily came all the way around to score and make it 2-1 Valpo. It looked like the two runs would be enough for Lopez in the circle, as she had retired seven of eight ISU hitters after the fourth-inning RBI single. But a leadoff single for the Sycamores proved crucial, as two batters later, Lauren Marsicek hit a homer to straightaway center field to flip the script and make it 3-2 ISU. Valpo threatened to earn a walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs on a trio of walks before a diving catch by the ISU center fielder ended the game. Inside the Games This is the third straight MVC series where Valpo has won the opener of the first-day doubleheader before dropping the nightcap. Vrastil extended her hitting streak to 10 straight games in the opener, as she went 2-for-3 with a walk to reach three times — her seventh multi-hit game of the streak. The hitting streak ended in the nightcap. Vrastil also drove in a pair of runs in the win, her third multi-RBI game of the season. Gallagher reached twice in the opener, highlighted by her three-run homer. It was her seventh homer of the season and the 30th of her collegiate career. Gallagher also reached via walk in the opener and drew a free pass in the nightcap as well, giving her 27 walks this season — tied for 10th-most in a single season in program history. She also cracked the program’s career top-10 for free passes, ending the day with 63 walks over her two seasons with the Beacons. Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron) reached twice in the opener as well, picking up a single and a walk. McDermott had her longest outing in the circle since Feb. 27 in the opener, going 6.1 innings and giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out seven to improve to 8-7 on the year. Lopez picked up her third save of the year and seventh of her Valpo career — tied for third-most in program history — with her back-to-back strikeouts to finish the opener. She took the loss in the nightcap, falling to 5-5 this season despite striking out seven in 6.1 innings. Next Up Valpo (14-18, 3-7 MVC) closes out the weekend series with the rubber game against Indiana State Sunday at noon. ================================================================= SMALL INDIANA COLLEGE SPORTS WEB SITES UINDY ATHLETICS: https://athletics.uindy.edu/ MARIAN ATHLETICS: https://muknights.com/ INDIANA WESLEYAN ATHLETICS: https://iwuwildcats.com/ EARLHAM ATHLETICS: https://goearlham.com/ WABASH ATHLETICS: https://sports.wabash.edu/ FRANKLIN ATHLETICS: https://franklingrizzlies.com/ ROSE-HULMAN ATHLETICS: https://athletics.rose-hulman.edu/ ANDERSON ATHLETICS: https://athletics.anderson.edu/landing/index TRINE ATHLETICS: https://trinethunder.com/landing/index BETHEL ATHLETICS: https://bupilots.com/ DEPAUW ATHLETICS: https://depauwtigers.com/ HANOVER ATHLETICS: https://athletics.hanover.edu/ MANCHESTER ATHLETICS: https://muspartans.com/ HUNTINGTON ATHLETICS: https://www.huathletics.com/ OAKLAND CITY ATHLETICS: https://gomightyoaks.com/index.aspx ST. The 36-year-old future Hall of Famer has led the league in stolen bases four times and will finish with 328 career steals. 1935 The reigning National League champion Cardinals release 44-year-old right-hander Dazzy Vance, who appeared in his first and only World Series this season. The future Hall of Fame hurler will return to the Dodgers, where he spent the most productive years of his career, finishing his major league 16-year tenure in the major leagues with a 197-140 (.585) record and an ERA of 3.24. 1944 During a Pacific Coast League minor league exhibition game, Oakland lends Los Angeles five players after some of their opponents suffer various injuries in a car accident. The ‘visiting’ team beats the hometown Oaks, 6-2. 1948 Thirty-four players participate in an unusually long exhibition game when the Yankees and the Red Sox take 17 innings to play to a 2-2 tie. The four-hour, two-minute contest features the Bronx Bombers scoring runs in the bottom of the ninth and tenth innings to keep the score knotted, but the team fails to push in the winning run in the final frame when Frank Crosetti attempts a two-out bunt to squeeze in a runner from third. 1954 The Cubs fire skipper Phil Cavarretta after telling reporters the team had little chance to finish in the first division. The 36-year-old player-manager, who compiled a 169-213 (.442) record during his three years at the helm, is the first to lose a managerial position during spring training. 1973 At the suggestion of A’s owner Charlie Finley, orange-colored balls are put into play in an 11-5 exhibition game loss to the Indians. Major League Baseball drops the novel concept after Cleveland outfielder George Hendrick, who hit three home runs in the contest, claims he had difficulty seeing the ball. 1975 Mel Stottlemyre, suffering from a torn rotator cuff, is given his unconditional release by the Yankees. The team’s future pitching coach compiled a 164-139 record and a 2.97 ERA, tossing 152 complete games, including 40 shutouts. 2000 The Expos and Labatt announce that the C$100M sponsorship deal, negotiated two years ago, will go forward as planned. The Brewery has committed to paying C$40M over the next 20 years for the naming rights to Montreal’s proposed downtown ballpark, and approximately another C$60M to serve as the team’s primary sponsor, a role the company has held for the past 15 years. 2001 With less than four years of major league service, Todd Helton signs a nine-year, $141.5 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in Rockies history. Last season, the 27-year-old Colorado first baseman batted .372, hit 42 homers, and knocked in 147 runs. 2002 The Red Sox purchase Rickey Henderson’s contract from Pawtucket, placing the future Hall of Fame outfielder on their Opening Day roster. The ‘Man of Steal,’ who joined the exclusive 3,000-hit club on the final day of last season, will begin his 24th year in the majors, appearing with his eighth different club. 2002 Major League Baseball announces there will be a minute of silence at 9:11 at every major league team’s first-night game this season to remember the tragic events of September 11th. The performance of God Bless America will continue during the seventh-inning stretch of all contests. 2002 The Brewers announce that Miller Park’s retractable roof will be used only on a limited basis at the start of the season as engineers try to eliminate persistent noise from the year-old structure. According to the engineers who designed the building, the problem in the pivot system, located behind and above home plate in the so-called Uecker seats, is not a hazard. 2007 In a split-squad game between the Cubs and Diamondbacks at Mesa’s HoHoKam Park, Ria Cortesio, serving alternately as the first and third base umpire, becomes the first female ump to work a major league exhibition game since Pam Postema in 1989. The thirty-year-old Davenport (IA) native, starting her ninth year as an arbitrator and fifth in Double-A minor league ball, hopes to be the first woman umpire in major league history. 2008 The Dodgers lose to the Red Sox in front of 115,300 fans at the LA Coliseum in an exhibition game celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary of their move west from Brooklyn. The crowd is the largest ever to watch a baseball game, surpassing the previous record of approximately 114,000 who attended an exhibition contest between the Australian national and American services teams during the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. 2009 John Franco throws out the ceremonial first pitch to a standing ovation from the crowd attending the collegiate matchup between St. John’s and Georgetown in the first baseball game ever played at Citi Field. Before tossing his signature pitch, a breaking ball in the dirt, the former Mets reliever takes the mound wearing the familiar blue and orange but then removes his jacket to reveal his alma mater’s colors, a Red Storm jersey with his number 45. 2009 Dontrelle Willis is placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Tigers. According to the 27-year-old southpaw, who has been unsuccessful since winning 22 games with the Marlins in 2003, he has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, believed by doctors to be easily treatable. 2009 On a chilly afternoon, 22,397 patrons become the first fans to attend a baseball game at Citi Field, the Mets’ new home, when St. John’s University hosts Georgetown in a collegiate contest. The weather dampened the schools’ hope of breaking the NCAA attendance record of 40,106, set during a game between San Diego State and Houston played at Petco Park in 2004. 2009 The Yankees dedicate a permanent September 11th memorial at the entrance of George M. Steinbrenner Field, the team’s Spring Training home in Tampa (FL). The tribute to the victims and their families of the terrorist attacks of 2001 features a foundation in the shape of the Pentagon, which supports two towers made from steel from the World Trade Center, placed on a grassy spot representing the heroes of United Flight 93, who perished in a field in Pennsylvania. 2010 Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announces President Obama will throw out the first pitch before Washington’s game against the Phillies at Nationals Park on Opening Day, continuing a century-old tradition. In 1910, William Howard Taft became the first Commander-in-Chief to toss the ceremonial first pitch to start the season. 2013 Tiger right-hander Justin Verlander agrees to a seven-year, $180 million contract, the richest deal for a pitcher in baseball history. The 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner, already signed through 2014 under a previous $80 million, five-year deal, decides not to test free agency in two years, stating that “the pull of Detroit was too much.” 2013 The Giants and Buster Posey, the National League’s MVP, agree on an eight-year, $159 million extension with a full no-trade clause. The deal, keeping the 26-year-old backstop in a Giants’ uniform through 2021, is the second-richest contract ever given to a catcher, surpassed only by the Twins’ signing of Joe Mauer two seasons ago to an eight-year, $184 million pact. 2017 The Dodgers commemorate Kirk Gibson’s historic pinch-hit, walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series by offering a special ticket package for a right-field pavilion seat, recently painted blue and bearing his signature, where the ball landed. The team is donating two-thirds of the $300 price of the ducats, including a companion seat, two commemorative T-shirts, and food and drink, to the Kirk Gibson Foundation to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s research, a neurological disease affecting the Fall Classic hero. 2018 This date marks the earliest start of the major league season in the game’s history, excluding international openers. The schedule calls for all the teams to play on Opening Day for the first time since April 10th, 1968, the last season before divisional play started in the American and National Leagues. 2018 Matt Davidson becomes the fourth major leaguer to hit three home runs on Opening Day, contributing to the White Sox’s 14-7 victory over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The White Sox slugging third baseman joins Dmitri Young (Tigers, 2005), Tuffy Rhodes (Cubs, 1994), and George Bell (Blue Jays, 1988) in accomplishing the feat on the first day of the season. 2018 On Opening Day, the Blue Jays retire the late right-hander Roy Halladay’s number 32 during an emotional on-field ceremony at Rogers Centre. In his 12 seasons with Toronto, the six-time American League All-Star, who died in a plane crash off the coast of Florida in November, compiled a 148-76 record with a 3.43 ERA before his trade to the Phillies in 2009 for minor league prospects. 2018 At Miami, Cubs’ leadoff hitter Ian Happ goes deep on the season’s first pitch, homering to right field off a Jose Urena fastball in the team’s 8-4 victory over the Marlins. The 23-year-old center fielder, playing in his first Opening Day contest, becomes the first player to accomplish the feat since the Red Sox’s Dwight Evans took Tiger right-hander Jack Morris deep on the initial delivery of the 1986 campaign. =================================================================== TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY On March 29 in … 1906 – Stanley Cup: Montréal Wanderers sweep Kenora Thisles in two games. 1919 – Stanley Cup: Montréal (NHL) and Seattle (PCHA) win two games each with one tie; 1919 Stanley Cup not awarded due to flu epidemic. 1929 – NHL Stanley Cup: Boston Bruins sweep New York Rangers in two games. 1940 – Joe Louis knocks out Johnny Paycheck in two rounds to retain heavyweight boxing title. 1941 – Third NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Wisconsin beats Washington State 39-34. 1946 – First Test Cricket between Australia and New Zealand. 1946 – Test Cricket debuts of Lindwall, Miller and Tallon. 1948 – New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox tie at 2-2 in 17 innings, spring training game. 1953 – Patty Berg wins LPGA New Orleans Women’s Golf Open. 1958 – US Ladies Figure Skating Championship won by Carol Heiss. 1958 – US Men’s Figure Skating Championship won by David Jenkins. 1959 – Wes Hall takes Pakistani cricket hat-trick at Lahore. 1966 – Muhammad Ali beats George Chuvalo in 15 rounds for heavyweight boxing title. 1970 – Manchester City wins 10th Europe Cup II. 1973 – Dave Cowens wins NBA Most Valuable Player. 1975 – Jane Blalock wins LPGA Karsten-Ping Golf Open. 1976 – 38th NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Indiana beats Michigan 86-68. 1979 – Delhi beats Karnataka by 399 runs to win Cricket’s Ranji Trophy. 1979 – Last day of Test cricket for Mushtaq Mohammad. 1981 – Pat Bradley wins LPGA Women’s Kemper Golf Open. 1981 – Tiina Lehtola ski-jumps female record 110 metres. 1981 – The first London Marathon starts with 7,500 runners. 1982 – 44th NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: North Carolina beats Georgetown 63-62. 1982 – Delhi 707 beats Karnataka 705 on first innings to win Ranji Trophy. 1984 – NFL Baltimore Colts move to Indianapolis under cover of night. 1985 – Wayne Gretzky breaks own NHL season record with 126th assist. 1987 – 6th NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship: Tennessee beats Louisiana Tech 67-44. 1987 – Pat Bradley wins LPGA Standard Register Turquoise Golf Classic. 1987 – Australian Football League expansion team, the West Coast Eagles, play their first ever match (not including pre-season).
