The result wasn’t secured until the Commodores’ Tyler Tanner, who scored a game-high 27 points, barely missed a 3-point shot from beyond halfcourt as time expired. Flyers 4, Sharks 1 Christian Dvorak scored a power-play goal early in the third period, helping Philadelphia extend its season-high road winning streak to seven games with a victory over San Jose. Owen Tippett scored in the second period and defenseman Travis Sanheim and Noah Cates each found the empty net 36 seconds apart in the third. Dan Vladar made 24 saves for the Flyers, who completed a sweep of their three-game California road trip and improved to 5-0-1 in their last six games overall. The Sharks’ Macklin Celebrini notched an assist on defenseman Dmitry Orlov’s power-play goal, boosting the former’s career total to 99. Celebrini (19 years, 281 days) is one assist shy of becoming the second-youngest player in NHL history to reach that milestone behind only Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby (19 years, 134 days on Dec. 19, 2006). Alex Nedeljkovic turned aside 24 shots for San Jose, which has lost four in a row and seven of its last nine (2-5-2). Canadiens 7, Islanders 3 Cole Caufield had a hat trick and finished with a career-high five points to lead Montreal’s third-period surge past visiting New York. Juraj Slafkovsky had two goals and two assists for his first career four-point game, and Kaiden Guhle had a goal and two assists for the Canadiens, who outscored the Islanders 4-1 in the third period. Nick Suzuki had four assists and Jacob Fowler made 19 saves. Emil Heineman, Simon Holmstrom and Matthew Schaefer scored for the Islanders. Ilya Sorokin allowed six goals on 32 shots before being lifted in the third period. Blues 3, Canucks 1 Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and an assist for St. Louis in a win over host Vancouver. Pius Suter and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues, who snapped a two-game skid and pulled within six points of the second and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Jordan Binnington made 14 saves. Filip Hronek scored and Kevin Lankinen made 18 saves for the Canucks, who are 13 points behind the rest of the league. ===================================================================== MLB SPRING TRAINING ROUNDUP: BRAVES’ CHRIS SALE OUTDUELS RED SOX’ GARRETT CROCHET IN BATTLE OF ACES In a matchup of left-handed Opening Day starters, Chris Sale got the better of Garrett Crochet as the visiting Atlanta Braves defeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla. Sale allowed just one run on two hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked one in an 86-pitch outing to lower his spring ERA to 2.75. Austin Riley went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Matt Olson also went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Crochet’s spring ERA ballooned to 7.36 as he permitted six earned runs on six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three in an 89-pitch effort. Boston managed only four singles and its lone run scored in the second on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s RBI groundout. Rays 3, Twins 2 Chandler Simpson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to rally Tampa Bay past Minnesota in Port Charlotte, Fla. All five runs were scored via the long ball. Jonathan Aranda opened the scoring with a solo shot in the third, but Minnesota’s Matt Wallner and Ryan Jeffers countered with solo homers in the fourth and sixth, respectively. Minor leaguer Jackson Baumeister started for Tampa Bay and allowed Wallner’s home run, but only one additional hit in 4 1/3 innings. Probable Twins Opening Day starter Joe Ryan finished with a 1.50 spring ERA as he permitted only Aranda’s long ball, along with two other hits and a walk, while fanning two in five innings. Nationals 3, Mets (ss) 1 Joey Wiemer hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give Washington a walk-off win over New York’s split squad in Palm Beach, Fla. After seven innings of shutout baseball by both staffs, the Mets’ Mark Vientos homered to put his side on top in the top of the eighth. Kervin Pichardo knotted the score with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning, which set up Wiemer’s heroics. New York minor-leaguers Joander Suarez (4 innings) and William Watson (3 1/3 innings) held the Nationals scoreless through 7 1/3 innings. Washington starter Cade Cavalli, who threw 14 scoreless innings this spring, went five innings and allowed three hits. He is expected to start Opening Day versus the Cubs in Chicago. Cardinals 7, Marlins 4 The first six Cardinals reached base in a four-run first inning as host St. Louis held off Miami in Jupiter, Fla. Alec Burleson drove in the first two runs with a double and went 2-for-4 in the game. Thomas Saggese (2-for-3) homered in the sixth to extend the Cards’ lead to 6-4. Five St. Louis relievers held the Marlins scoreless over the final five innings. Griffin Conine (2-for-3) hit a two-run homer and Connor Norby followed with a solo blast in the fourth inning to trim a 5-0 deficit to 5-4. Starter Janson Junk’s struggles continued as he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk in three innings. He concluded spring with a 10.13 ERA. Tigers 3, Yankees 1 Prominent offseason acquisition Framber Valdez continued to look the part as he allowed one run and scattered seven hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings as host Detroit prevailed over New York in Lakeland, Fla. Valdez lowered his spring training ERA to 0.98 in 18 1/3 innings. The only run he allowed Saturday occurred on Austin Wells’ sacrifice bunt that gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Tigers scratched out single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with a run scored. New York starter Cam Schlittler was held to 62 pitches and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out one. Pirates 8, Blue Jays 3 In a battle between Opening Day starters, Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes outdueled Toronto’s Kevin Gausman in Bradenton, Fla. Oneill Cruz and Spencer Horwitz homered as Cruz (2-for-4) scored twice, drove in two runs stole his fifth base of the spring and pushed his batting average to .417. New infielder Brandon Lowe went 3-for-4. Skenes threw 36 of 56 pitches for strikes as he allowed one hit and three walks while fanning five over four innings. Gausman pitched five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) and nine baserunners (six hits, three walks) while fanning two in five innings. Andres Gimenez went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Astros 7, Mets (ss) 5 Houston scored four times in the top of the eighth to rally past New York in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Christian Walker delivered the key blow as he blasted a three-run homer after the first two Astros reached base in the inning. Yainer Diaz (2 runs) and Nick Allen (2 RBIs) each had two hits in a nine-hit Houston attack. Starter Mike Burrows, pitching against his old team, allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and finished the spring with a 1.50 ERA. New Mets second baseman Marcus Semien cleared the bags with a three-run double in the sixth to give his side a 4-3 lead. Journeyman Aaron Salgado, on his sixth team since 2017, went 3-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Orioles 10, Phillies 8 Jhonkensy Noel hit a grand slam to snap a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth as Baltimore prevailed over Philadelphia in its Florida finale in Sarasota, Fla. After Philadelphia sliced its 8-4 deficit in half in the top of the seventh, minor-leaguer Victor Figueroa added a two-run single. Swingman Tyler Wells struck out the side in the sixth to pick up the win. Bryson Stott and Bryan De La Cruz each contributed a pair of hits for the Phillies and Liover Peguero drove in a pair with a seventh-inning double. =================================================================== GOLF HOT START HELPS HYO JOO KIM TAKE 5-SHOT LEAD AT FORTINET FOUNDERS CUP South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim improved her grip on the lead to five strokes with a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday at the Fortinet Founders Cup in Menlo Park, Calif. Kim, a seven-time winner on the LPGA Tour and the 2015 Founders Cup champion, led by two shots after the opening round and four through Friday’s play. The 30-year-old shot 6 under for the first six holes on Saturday and is 17-under 199 after three rounds at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club, which is hosting the event for the first time. World No. 2 Nelly Korda, competing for the first time since winning the weather-shortened Tournament of Champions to open the 2026 season, is five strokes back at 12 under after she matched Kim’s 66. Kim, ranked No. 8 in the world, had an adventurous round with only seven pars. She started on fire with birdies at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 before an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole to get to 16 under for the tournament. Another birdie followed at No. 6, then the first of her three bogeys on the day to make the turn in 31 shots. “The start up to hole 6, I believe, was unbelievable golf and I can’t even believe it,” Kim said. “I had a lot of birdies and (an) eagle, too. But I did also have some bogeys I shouldn’t have done. The start felt like almost a game.” The back nine included birdies at Nos. 10 and 13 sandwiched around two bogeys and her seventh birdie of the round at the par-4 No. 16. Kim hit eight of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation on Saturday. Korda carded 33 on both the front and back nines in her bogey-free round. Birdies came at Nos. 2, 7, 8, 10, 16 and 18. “It’s nice to have a clean scorecard wherever you play,” Korda said. “Doesn’t matter. With kind of how tough it is off the tee and into the greens, just really happy with my round today.” She needed only 27 putts in hitting 10 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation. China’s Ruixin Liu (66 on Saturday) and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez (65) are tied for third at 11 under. World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, who leads the Race to CME Globe standings, is tied for fifth at 9 under with three others: Australia’s Karis Davison (69), Japan’s Erika Hara (67) and South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi (69). PADRAIG HARRINGTON, THONGCHAI JAIDEE TIED THROUGH TWO ROUNDS AT COLOGUARD Ireland’s Padraig Harrington carded a 6-under-par 65 on Saturday to forge a tie with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee atop the leaderboard with a round to play at the Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Harrington pocketed two impressive eagles over a three-hole stretch (holes 9-11) which also included a birdie as he surged into contention at La Paloma Country Club at 11 under for the tourney. “You know, every hole out here, if you play it well, you’ve got a birdie chance. But it’s so difficult being committed to your shots,” Harrington said. “Nobody can expect to be perfect, but you’ve got to be committed to whatever number you come up with. Whatever formula you use, you’ve got to stick to it, and probably just roll with the punches when it doesn’t quite work out.” Harrington finished with two eagles, five birdies and three bogeys. Jaidee’s day was much calmer, as the veteran went bogey-free while snatching four birdies. His 4-under 67 followed a Friday round that more resembled Harrington’s Saturday: two eagles, four birdies and a bogey (64). That had been good enough to position him in second, alongside South Africa’s Retief Goosen, who fell off the pace with a 2-over 73. That tumble left Goosen in a tie for 26th. Defending champion Steven Alker of New Zealand might have raised eyebrows with his scintillating 9-under 62 that tied the course record and brought him back within striking distance at 9 under overall. No player has yet to successfully defend his title at the Cologuard Classic, but Alker will have a chance on Sunday. “I just wanted to put up a good day to get back in the tournament,” Alker said. “Defending champ, so I wanted to kind of give it a good run. Kind of feel like I’ve put myself in there, three or four back, you never know at the end of the day. Yeah, it was a nice round. Some positive stuff going forward.” Bo Van Pelt, who had also tied the course record with a 9-under-par 62 on Friday, shot 10 strokes worse than that in Round 2 (1-over 72), dropping him into a tie for eighth at 8 under for the tournament. Two golfers are ahead of Alker in a tie for third at 10 under after shooting matching 67s: Tommy Gainey and Germany’s Bernhard Langer. Zach Johnson (65) and Jason Caron (66) are tied with Alker in fifth. SOUTH KOREA’S SUNGJAE IM MAINTAINS VALSPAR LEAD FOR THIRD STRAIGHT DAY South Korea’s Sungjae Im sank a 13-foot putt on the final hole to shoot 2-under-par 69 and stretch his lead to two strokes through the third round of the Valspar Championship on Saturday at Palm Harbor, Fla. Im had gone nine holes without a birdie on Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club’s Copperhead Course before sinking his last birdie attempt. He enters Sunday’s final round at 11-under 202 in search of his first PGA Tour win since the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open. Brandt Snedeker posted 67 to pull into a share of second place with David Lipsky, who turned in an erratic 70. Snedeker’s bogey-free round — beginning with three birdies on the first four holes — gave him a score that matched the best rounds of the day. England’s Marco Penge and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick shot matching 68s to hold a tie for fourth place at 8 under. That’s two shots clear of South Korea’s S.H. Kim and Belgium’s Adrien Dumont de Chassart, a duo that shared the day’s best round with Snedeker. Lipsky moved into a share of the lead with a birdie on No. 15 before giving it back with a bogey — his third of the back nine — on the next hole. His round included five birdies and four bogeys. Im, who hadn’t led through 36 holes of a PGA Tour event since 2021, finished at 69 for the second day in a row. He saved par on No. 16 after a tee shot settled on a cart path. Penge was at 2 over for the round after a double-bogey 6 on No. 6, but he played the backside bogey-free at 4 under. Fitzpatrick was steadier. He fashioned nothing but pars — save a three-hole stretch of birdies on Nos. 10-12. ===================================================================== AUTO RACING TEAMMATES TYLER REDDICK, BUBBA WALLACE QUALIFY 1-2 IN DARLINGTON DARLINGTON, S.C. — The top two drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series standings will start 1-2 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday — but not before pole winner Tyler Reddick scraped the Turn 4 wall on his no-holds-barred qualifying lap. Reddick beat 23XI Racing teammate Bubba Wallace for the top spot on the grid by 0.124 seconds in Saturday’s time trials for the Goodyear 400 (3 p.m. ET Sunday on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). As the series leader and winner of the first three races of the season, Reddick was the only driver to tour the 1.366-mile speedway in more than 169 mph, posting a speed of 169.152 mph in his No. 45 Toyota. Wallace, second in the standings and 61 points behind his teammate, paced his Toyota to 168.434 mph. The Busch Light Pole Award was Reddick’s second of the season and the 13th of his career, but he ended the qualifying session with a noticeable “Darlington stripe” along the right side of the car. “I knew qualifying was going to be really tough,” Reddick said. “A lot of drivers were having trouble finding that edge, that limit in Turn 1. I nailed that pretty good. Felt really good about the lap going down the back straightaway, and I truly think I kind of underdid it through the center of (Turns) 3 and 4 and felt like I just had to get on the gas and get off the corner–and basically just ran it into the wall. “Looks like we’re all good on the damage, but to be able to have that kind of speed in practice and again in qualifying was awesome to see.” Chase Elliott, runner-up to Denny Hamlin last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, was third fastest at 167.727 mph, but Elliott’s No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet failed pre-qualifying inspection twice, resulting in loss of pit selection and ejection of his car chief. Reigning series champion Kyle Larson claimed the fourth starting position at 167.396 mph, followed by Brad Keselowski in the fastest Ford at 167.129 mph. “I thought it was really smooth,” said Keselowski, who qualified one position ahead of RFK Racing teammate Chris Buescher (167.021 mph). “It looks like Chris is qualified right next to me. I felt like I got all it had. We know the cars are going to be very difficult to drive, and that did not disappoint.” Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Hamlin and Austin Dillon will start from positions seven through 10, respectively. Along with Elliott’s Chevrolet, the No. 17 Ford of Buescher and the No. 66 Ford of Timmy Hill failed pre-qualifying twice and lost pit selection for Sunday’s race and the services of their respective car chiefs for the weekend. Hill starts 37th on Sunday. NASCAR Cup Series Qualifying — Goodyear 400 Darlington Raceway Darlington, South Carolina Saturday, March 21, 2026 1. (45) Tyler Reddick, Toyota, 169.152 mph. 2. The Spurs, having just clinched the playoffs for the first time in six years, were riding a four-game winning streak entering Saturday’s contest. Indiana sought to snap a 15-game losing streak. The Spurs’ hot start kept the Pacers at bay as San Antonio defeated Indiana, 134-119. San Antonio leapt out to a 15-4 lead early in the first quarter, but Pascal Siakam led Indiana to a 7-0 run that brought the Pacers back within four, 15-11. The Spurs still shot over 50 percent from the floor in the first frame, including 50 percent from 3-point range, and went on to score a blistering 42 points in the quarter. The Spurs were without Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell – two of their eight players scoring in double figures this season. San Antonio didn’t miss their offense in the first half. Indiana trailed after the first quarter, 42-29. Siakam notched a game-high 10 points in the quarter, but the Pacers faced down a 13-point deficit heading into the second quarter. Keldon Johnson hit a good rhythm for San Antonio down the stretch of the first half as he recorded eight points in each of the first two quarters, and hit the 16-point mark at the half. Andrew Nembhard forced Wembanyama into a travel as he continued a strong second-quarter stretch – Nembhard scored eight points in the second frame to total 10 in the first half – in which Indiana battled back from down as many as 21 points. Indiana struggled from deep throughout the first half of action – the Pacers knocked down just five of their 19 3-point attempts. San Antonio connected on 40 percent of its long-range attempts. Siakam led the Pacers into halftime with 12 points and three assists, and Nembhard recorded four assists along with his 10 points. Johnson was San Antonio’s top-scorer at the halftime break with 16 points, three rebounds, and three assists. The Pacers trailed at the half, 66-53. Indiana cut the lead into single digits just over two minut But San Antonio was soon off and running, and the lead grew from nine points back to 17 by the seven-minute mark of the third quarter. Rebounds eluded the Pacers. The Spurs outrebounded Indiana by 16 rebounds in the first half, and that trend continued into the latter half of the game. San Antonio outrebounded the Pacers, 49-26. Turnovers became an issue in the second half, too. Indiana committed four turnovers to San Antonio’s single turnover in the third quarter, and trailed heading into the fourth, 100-85. The lead reached a game-high 21 points three minutes into the fourth quarter, but Nembhard wasn’t done fighting. He drilled a triple, but Wembanyama responded with a 3-pointer of his own on the next possession. Nembhard scored 10 points in the final period of the game, bringing his total to 25 points for the night. He also dished out seven assists. Jarace Walker recorded 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Dylan Harper and Johnson both contributed 24 points for the Spurs. Wembanyama notched 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five blocks. San Antonio defeated the Pacers, 134-119. The loss marks Indiana’s 16th consecutive. The Pacers will return to action on Monday, March 23, when they travel to Orlando for a matchup with the Magic. Inside the Numbers The Pacers recorded 38 assists on 44 made field goals. Indiana committed 10 turnovers to San Antonio’s 12, but allowed 22 points off those turnovers. The Spurs allowed just 15 points off their turnovers. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field, but the Pacers hit nearly 46 percent of their 3-point attempts. San Antonio made 38 percent. You Can Quote Me on That “There’s been a pattern to this. We’ve had a lot of rough second quarters. Tonight, the first quarter was obviously the one, and the rest of the game was even within two points…This is a great first quarter team. We just needed to have a lot more resistance in that first quarter, and we just didn’t do it.” – Coach Rick Carlisle on Indiana’s start “Getting outrebounded 49 to 26 is a big problem. Second chance points, 20 to seven is a big problem, so we’ve got to address that. We’ve got to get better. There were [ten] turnovers. [It] doesn’t seem bad, but 22 points off [ten] turnovers is hellacious. So we just got really hit in some of these areas where you’ve got to be solid.” – Carlisle on rebounding and turnovers causing issues “They’re one of a small handful that’s a legit championship contender. I think that’s obvious. They’re 21 and two in their last 23 games. They’ve beaten Oklahoma three times. They’re mowing people down.” – Carlisle on San Antonio’s ability to contend Stat of the Night Indiana was outrebounded, 49-26. The Spurs grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to the Pacers’ four. Noteworthy Indiana is 45-61 against the Spurs all-time. Ben Sheppard is just two points shy of recording his 1,000th career point. Jarace Walker has scored in double figures in 11 of his last 12 games. Ivica Zubac was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured rib sustained in Wednesday’s game against the Trail Blazers. Up Next The Pacers travel to Orlando for a matchup with the Magic on Monday, March 23 at 7:00 PM ET. ===================================================================== INDY ELEVEN RECAP – IND 2:1 DET Indianapolis – Indy Eleven completed a successful week with its second victory in five days, earning a 2-1 win over USL Championship Eastern Conference rival Detroit City FC in the home opener in front of 9,357 fans at Carroll Stadium. Quotes Coach Sean McAuley “We’re really pleased that our players got rewarded for their effort and the hard work that they put in. We created a lot of chances and gave up chances as well–that’s going to be us this season. We must defend well with our backs to the wall, make sure that we compete, and grind out things to give ourselves a chance to win. I’m pleased the way it ended because we need to grind our results this season. On the play of forwards Dylan Sing, Charlie Sharp, & Bruno Rendon Charlie centrally did a great job and then them Dylan & Bruno filled in behind him. I think that’s going to be a real indication of how we’re going to have to play this year, because we’re coming up against teams that are good with the ball, and we’re going to have to be really good without the ball. On Bruno Rendon’s second year with the club Confidence and belief are big things. He found himself now and he knows what he can do when he’s playing against an opponent. He had the better of his opponent in the first half, so I encouraged him at halftime to keep going. I didn’t expect him to go and fire one in his top one in his left foot, but it’s just having that confidence and belief makes a massive difference. It provides a lot of energy for us–that was a big key. He can close more than one person down to really put the opponent under pressure. He has got the quality that’s needed. On protecting a one-goal lead late Our players were professional in their approach. In the five minutes of stoppage time, our defense kept a good shape. When they threw everybody forward, we defended well with it, getting a massive three points against one of the better teams in the East last season, and doing it at home. What does the victory do for your team? It builds belief for us. I want the players to respond whether we win or lose and always give maximum effort. Today, we got a reward for it. It was the way we played. We’re organized and structured on set plays. We caused a lot of problems with set plays, so we need to continue with that moving forward. Dylan Sing On the pressure that he, Charlie, and Bruno were putting on up top throughout the match. We want to play with high intensity and on our front foot. We have athletic, big, skilled guys–that is advantageous for us. The pressure was part of the game plan, and we did well when we switched play to get a lot of chances. Josh (O’Brien) found Bruno on a slip ball, he took the end line, and he put a great ball in for me to finish. That was awesome, and it was great to take a lead into halftime. On scoring in the home opener for his new club It was amazing–I was hoping to have this moment, and it feels even better getting to experience it. Playing in front of the home fans for the first time and playing in the USL Championship is an incredible experience. I’m closer to home, I had family at the match, so I’m excited to see them afterwards, and see my friends, and get to be a part of the Indianapolis community. On winning aerial duels We want to play to our strengths because we have a taller roster. Winning more aerial duels enables us to go forward more often. We have guys that want to go and win those duels, be physical, and force the defense when we get to not get the cleanest second ball. Our roster is a little younger, so we keep talking about the energy and the intensity. We keep this team’s DNA going forward, and everyone feeds off it. When one person shows energy, it builds for everyone and for those that come on as well. I thought our substitutes were fantastic, keeping pressure on them, not letting them be comfortable as well. The whole roster has it, which is exciting to see. ==================================================================== INDIANA BASEBALL SERIES SECURED WITH MASSIVE FIFTH INNING BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Energy was at an all-time high as the Indiana Baseball team (10-12, 3-5 B1G) put the finishing touches on a series victory over Minnesota (15-8, 1-4 B1G) at Bart Kaufman Field. A five-run fifth inning – that featured three home runs – delivered a blow that the visitors couldn’t recover from. IU’s bullpen worked three scoreless frames to close out a 7-2 win on a beautiful Saturday (March 21) afternoon in Bloomington. Minnesota starter Isaac Morton recorded the first 12 outs of the game without giving up a hit. That quickly changed in the fifth inning as redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts led off the inning with a solo home run into the bullpen in left field. A solo blast from sophomore outfielder Cole Decker and a three-run shot from sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley – both to the same spot in left field – gave IU a lead it wouldn’t give up. Extra insurance runs came in the sixth and seventh innings with RBI singles from freshman second baseman Landen Fry and sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie. The top eight hitters in IU’s order all recorded base knocks, led by a 2-3 day from Fry. Seven different players scored a run for the Hoosiers. Graduate student southpaw Tony Neubeck (W, 2-2) turned in his second quality start of Big Ten play. He provided six innings of two-run baseball. He walked two guys but recorded eight strikeouts on just 87 pitches. Neubeck handed the ball over to the bullpen for three scoreless frames from junior right-handed pitchers Jacob Vogel and Jackson Yarberry. IU’s relievers have given up just three runs in 16.1 innings of work this week. Saturday’s victory kept pitch counts low and sets IU up for a chance to sweep the Gophers tomorrow (March 22) at Bart Kaufman Field. IU is going for the 11th conference sweep in the head coach Jeff Mercer era (since 2019). First pitch has been moved up to 12:30 p.m. to accommodate travel considerations. It will stream on B1G+. IU recorded 258 points, the program’s second-best total, only behind the 312 points scored in a school record fourth place performance last season. Despite losing five All-Americans from that fourth place team, Indiana retooled with freshman and transfer talent to earn its fourth top seven national finish in four years. For the second consecutive season, Indiana placed top 10 in all five relays. The Hoosiers set program records in four of the five events, including all three freestyle relays, and broke the Big Ten record in the 400 freestyle relay for the third time this season (3:07.51). Freshman Alex Shackell appeared on all five relays. Shackell and freshman classmate Liberty Clark combined for 78 points and reached the podium in all five of their combined individual races. Of Indiana’s nine program records, all nine had the name Clark and/or Shackell attached to it. Over the week, Clark lowered her program records in the 50-yard freestyle (21.25) and 100-yard freestyle (46.11) and claimed the school standard in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.70), while becoming one of two women all-time to break the 1:40 barrier twice in the 200 free. Her best times in the 50 free and 200 free set 17-18 National Age Group records. Shackell medaled in each of her two individual events, lowering her program records in the 100-yard butterfly (49.82) and 200-yard butterfly (1:50.40). Her 100 fly performance earned a bronze medal and set the Big Ten record in the event, beating Maggie MacNeil’s five-year old mark. She finished second in the 200 fly by 14 hundredths but was the lone freshman in the championship final. Senior Kristina Paegle closes her career a 24-time All-American, setting the program record for top-16 NCAA finishes. Formerly the program record holder in the 50 free, the Bloomington native set the foundation for IU’s sprint and relay culture that found so much success this week. Paegle was the lone non-freshman on Indiana’s program-record breaking 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays – helped by Clark, Shackell and Grace Hoeper on each. Junior Miranda Grana earned All-American honors in each of her individual events, reaching the podium in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke (8th in both). On the diving boards, junior Ella Roselli earned personal best NCAA finishes on the 1-meter springboard (12th) and platform (9th). ================================================================== PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL PURDUE FACES 7TH-SEEDED MIAMI FOR BERTH IN SWEET 16 GAMEDAY INFORMATION — NCAA SECOND ROUND [2 seed] Purdue (28-8) vs. [7 seed] Miami, Fla. Ali Banks hit the game-deciding home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, greeting the Nittany Lions’ top reliever with a 392-foot blast to left center on the second pitch of the day thrown by Kyle Emmons. It was Banks’ third homer of the season, all coming in the last six games. CJ Richmond and Dylan Drake both connected for a double in the span of three batters to pull the Boilermakers (15-6, 5-3 Big Ten) even in the bottom of the fifth. Drake missed an opposite-field home run by just a few feet, settling for his third double and fourth extra-base hit of the series. Drake also enjoyed a fantastic defensive game at second base. He helped Purdue turn three double plays for the second game in a row – none bigger than an inning-ending 4-3 twin killing with the bases loaded to end the top of the fifth. He also took away a one-out single with a sliding play up the middle in the second inning. Richmond assisted his infield mate with a long wingspan and stretches at first base on multiple occasions. The Boilermakers have turned three double plays in back-to-back games for the first time since racking up seven across the midweek and home openers in March 2024. Erdman opened the game with consecutive 1-2-3 innings and finished his outing with a third 1-2-3 frame. He pitched from the stretch for much of the middle innings, but still only needed 86 pitches to complete seven frames. Coincidentally, the senior had registered at least five strikeouts in each of his first five outings before going without a K on Saturday. Erdman has pitched a combined 20 innings of one-run ball across Purdue’s trio of 2-1 victories, all of which have been on Saturdays. Jake Kramer retired all five batters he faced while closing out a win for the second Saturday in a row. He struck out the opposition’s top hitter to begin his outing for the second week in a row. Anderson had multiple hits for the fourth consecutive game. He’s 9-for-14 during that stretch. Drake is 12-for-24 with a team-high 11 RBI during his current seven-game hit streak. The Boilermakers went without a free pass (walk or HBP) at the plate Saturday for the first time this season. They won for the sixth time in the last seven games all the same. Purdue will go for a series sweep for the second Sunday in a row and remains in pursuit of its first such sweep in Big Ten play since April 2024 at Northwestern. How It Happened Lockwood struck out a pair in the bottom of the first, plus catcher Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) cut down a would-be base stealer on a nifty tag by shortstop Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) to help the Beacons post a zero. Riley ripped a single that saw the third baseman make a diving stop before an errant throw to first in the top of the second, plating a run to put the Beacons on the board first. Valpo had runners at second and third with two down in the top of the fourth, but the shortstop made a great catch on a line drive to take away a two-run single and keep it a one-run game with Valpo leading 1-0. The Racers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, an inning that started with two outs and nobody on base, leveling the score at one on a triple to right center. Murray State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run triple to go ahead 3-1. Lockwood remained in the game for the bottom of the seventh and bounced back with a 1-2-3 inning to keep the deficit at two. The Beacons threatened in the eighth with a pair of two-out baserunners, but they were stranded at first and second. Lockwood finished what he started by working three up, three down in the bottom of the eighth, finishing his day by retiring the final eight batters to keep the Beacons within striking distance, but 3-1 stood as the final. Inside the Game Lockwood tossed his second complete game of the season and the fifth of his career. He needed just 87 pitches to cover all eight defensive innings. Lockwood’s three strikeouts on Saturday moved him into the program’s all-time top 10 for career Ks. He is tied with Richard Beumer (1959-1962) for 10th with 217, becoming the first player to enter the top 10 since fellow Libertyville native Colin Fields (2019-2022). Lockwood also climbed into the program’s all-time top 10 for innings pitched, finishing the day with 276 2/3, moving ahead of Tim Juran (1969-1972, 274 2/3) for 10th. He became the first player since Jon Tieman (2017-2021) to crack the program’s all-time top 10 for innings pitched. Lockwood walked just one while allowing three runs on seven hits in the eight innings. The walk was just the second he has issued all season and first since Feb. 13 vs. Gardner-Webb. Freshman Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) and sophomore Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) led the team with two hits apiece on a day the Beacons were outhit by a narrow 7-6 count. This was Valpo’s fourth loss of the season by two runs or fewer. Up Next The Beacons (6-12) will close out the series against Murray State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Evansville, Ind. A link to live stats is available on ValpoAthletics.com. ====================================================================== UINDY SOFTBALL SOFTBALL SPLITS HOME-OPENING TWIN BILL VERSUS JEWELL INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of the home faithful for the first time this spring, the No. 9 UIndy softball team split a GLVC doubleheader versus William Jewell Saturday afternoon at Baumgartner Field. The Greyhounds snapped a 12-game winning streak with a 6-3 loss in opener before rebounding with a 9-1 run-rule win in game 2. UP NEXT The Hounds return to Baumgartner Field on Sunday to host the Hawks of Rockhurst University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon ET. GAME 1 | Jewell 6, UIndy 3 UIndy crafted a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cardinals’ five-run outburst an inning prior. Later, the Hounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately couldn’t cash in. The result tagged sophomore starter Cheyenne Eads (12-1) with her first loss of the season. She struck out five in four-plus inning and was charged with all six runs—though only one was earned. Sophomore Josie Jager finished the game in the circle, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. At the plate, Brooklyn Willis led the way with two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth and a double to lead off the seventh. Christina Stankus had a hit and a run scored, and both Cara Cooper and Sydney Oliver recorded two walks. GAME 2 | UIndy 9, Jewell 1 (5 innings) The Greyhounds wasted little time jumping on the Cardinals in the capper, launching multi-run homers in each of the first three innings. Josie Jager got the Hounds on the board with a three-run blast in the first, while Brooklyn Willis and Maya Rodriguez followed with two-run shots in the second and third innings, respectively. Meanwhile, Caitlin Bunte (11-1) continued to rack up outs in her freshman campaign, finishing with a complete-game three-hitter. She faced just one over the minimum through the first four frames before surrendering a solo home run in the fifth—the only damage she would sustain. Six Greyhound batters had two base hits, while all nine of them had at least one hit or one walk. UIndy has combined to hit 12 home runs in the last 10 games, including six from Willis alone. ====================================================================== SMALL INDIANA COLLEGE SPORTS WEB SITES UINDY ATHLETICS: https://athletics.uindy.edu/ MARIAN ATHLETICS: https://muknights.com/ INDIANA WESLEYAN ATHLETICS: https://iwuwildcats.com/ EARLHAM ATHLETICS: https://goearlham.com/ WABASH ATHLETICS: https://sports.wabash.edu/ FRANKLIN ATHLETICS: https://franklingrizzlies.com/ ROSE-HULMAN ATHLETICS: https://athletics.rose-hulman.edu/ ANDERSON ATHLETICS: https://athletics.anderson.edu/landing/index TRINE ATHLETICS: https://trinethunder.com/landing/index BETHEL ATHLETICS: https://bupilots.com/ DEPAUW ATHLETICS: https://depauwtigers.com/ HANOVER ATHLETICS: https://athletics.hanover.edu/ MANCHESTER ATHLETICS: https://muspartans.com/ HUNTINGTON ATHLETICS: https://www.huathletics.com/ OAKLAND CITY ATHLETICS: https://gomightyoaks.com/index.aspx ST. In the book, the 65-year-old Hall of Famer dismisses the Yankees slugger as a mediocre hitter who couldn’t bat .400 even with all of his averages added up. 1962 In the first meeting between the two New York clubs, the Mets defeated the World Champion Yankees in a spring training game with a dramatic walk-off 4-3 victory at Al Lang Field. Casey Stengel, the former skipper of the Bronx Bombers, now the expansion team’s manager, clearly wanting to beat his old club, calls upon veteran Richie Ashburn, who delivers a ninth-inning pinch-hit single for the Amazins. 1972 The Yankees trade first baseman Danny Cater to the Red Sox for lefty reliever Albert Walter Lyle. Sparky will pitch in 420 games in relief over the next seven years with a 57-40 record and a 2.41 ERA, notching 141 saves as he helps the Bronx Bombers appear in three World Series. 1986 The Yankees announce Britt Burns, an 18-game winner with the White Sox last season, will miss the entire season due to a degenerative hip condition. The 26-year-old southpaw will never throw another major league pitch, ending his eight-year career, played entirely with Chicago, with a 70-60 (.538) won-loss record. 2002 After a miserable spring trying to make the Dodgers as a bench player, 38-year-old Dante Bichette (.299, 274, 1,141) announces his retirement. The four-time affable All-Star, who played with the Angels, Brewers, Rockies, Reds, and Red Sox during his 14-year major league career, will have a brief stint as the Rockies’ batting coach in 2009. 2005 Giants’ slugger Barry Bonds, who is 11 home runs shy of passing Babe Ruth on the all-time list, indicates he may not play this season. Implicated in the sport’s steroids scandal, the 40-year-old National League MVP, who has had two knee operations, cites being physically and mentally “done,” blaming the media for his unhappiness. 2010 With the same pen he used to sign his rookie contract in 2001, Twins catcher Joe Mauer (.365, 28, 96) signs a $184 million, eight-year contract extension, keeping him with the small-market team through 2018. Last year, the 26-year-old backstop, after starting the season on the DL as a result of back surgery the previous year, captured his third batting crown and was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player. 2014 At Sydney Cricket Grounds, the Dodgers defeat the Diamondbacks, 3-1, to open the Major League Baseball season. The contest marks the first regular-season game played in Australia. 2016 In a game attended by Barack Obama, the first sitting United States president to visit Cuba since 1928, the Rays beat the Cuban National team, 4-1, marking the first time in 17 years that a major league team had visited the island nation. In 1999 at Havana’s Estadio, the Orioles edged the home team, 3-2, thanks to Harold Baines’ eventual game-winning hit in the 11th inning. ========================================================= TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY On March 22 in … 1894 – Stanley Cup: Montréal AAA beat Ottawa Generals, 3-1 (first Cup game ever). 1929 – 66 horses run in Irish Grand National Sweepstakes. 1934 – First Masters golf championship begins in Augusta, Georgia, USA. 1953 – Louise Suggs wins LPGA Betsy Rawls Golf Open. 1958 – 20th NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Kentucky beats Seattle 84-72. 1959 – Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Nehi Golf Tournament. 1963 – Oregon State’s Terry Baker becomes first and only Heisman Trophy winner. 1964 – Carol Mann wins LPGA Women’s Western Golf Open Invitational. 1967 – Muhammad Ali [Cassius Clay] knocks out Zora Folley in 7 innings for heavyweight boxing title in first Madison Square Garden fight. 1969 – 31st NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: UCLA beats Purdue 92-72; UCLA wins its 5th national championship in six years. 1970 – Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Orange Blossom Golf Classic. 1972 – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar named NBA Most Valuable Player. 1972 – Nick Mileti purchases Cleveland Indians for US$9 million. 1972 – New York Yankees trade Danny Cater to the Boston Red Sox for Sparky Lyle. 1975 – Delta State beats Immaculata for the women’s AIAW championship. 1979 – NHL votes to accept four WHA teams (Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, and Hartford Whalers). 1981 – Donna Caponi Young wins LPGA Desert Inn Pro-Am Golf Tournament. 1981 – Toshihiko Seko runs world record 25km (1:13:55.8) and 30km (1:29:18.8). 1984 – New York Islanders’ Bryan Trottier ties NHL record scores 5 seconds into game. 1986 – Andrea Ehrig skates ladies world record 5 km (7:00.99). 1986 – HBO launches boxing’s heavyweight title unification tournament. 1986 – Karin Kania skates ladies world record 1500 metre (1:09.30). 1986 – Kurt Browning (Canada) becomes first skater to land a quadruple jump. 1986 – World Ice Dance Championship in Geneva won by Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Bukin (USSR). 1986 – World Ice Pairs Figure Skating Championship in Geneva won by Gordeeva and Grinkov (USSR). 1986 – World Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Geneva won by Debi Thomas (USA). 1986 – World Men’s Figure Skating Championship in Geneva won by Brian Boitano (USA). 1986 – Trevor Berbick beats Pinklon Thomas in 15 rounds for heavyweight boxing title. 1987 – Betsy King wins LPGA Circle K Tucson Golf Open. 1988 – Western Australia beats Queensland by five wickets to win the Sheffield Shield Final. 1989 – NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle announces retirement as NFL commissioner after 29 years. 1989 – Clint Malarchuk of the NHL Buffalo Sabres suffers an almost fatal injury when another player accidentally slits his throat. 1990 – The Major League Baseball umpires announce that they will boycott exhibition games. 1992 – Danielle Ammaccapane wins Standard Register Ping Golf Championship. 1992 – England beats South Africa in rain-ruined cricket World Cup semi final. 1992 – Joseph A Molloy elected New York Yankees general partner. 1994 – Mark Foster swims world record 50 metre butterfly (23.68 seconds). 1998 – Liselotte Neumann wins Standard Register PING Golf Tournament. 2009 – In Puebla, Mexico, round 2 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held.
