NFL
TODD MONKEN HIRED AS THE CLEVELAND BROWNS HEAD COACH
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have hired one of their former coordinators to be the team’s head coach.
However, it is not the one some people expected.
The Browns hired Todd Monken as the franchise’s 19th full-time head coach on Wednesday, wrapping up a three-week search. He replaces Kevin Stefanski, who was fired on Jan. 5, the day after Cleveland finished a 5-12 season.
This is Monken’s first NFL head coaching job after 11 years in the league as an assistant. He spent the previous three seasons as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator.
“He is an outstanding leader and has a clear vision to lead our team as a strong communicator who values trust with his players but also accountability and preparation. In our committee’s exhaustive reference work on Todd, his commitment to player development was evident, and his tough and straightforward coaching is respected by the players and the coaches he’s worked with, putting our team in a position to succeed while developing our players to maximize their talents,” owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement.
Monken was the Browns’ offensive coordinator on Freddie Kitchens’ staff in 2019. There was growing sentiment though that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz had emerged as the favorite, especially as the list of candidates thinned out.
BILL BELICHICK’S SNUB FROM THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME IS CRITICIZED BY VOTERS AND NFL FANS
Bill Belichick won six Lombardi Trophies as a head coach with the Patriots, two as an assistant with the Giants and has more Super Bowl rings than anyone in NFL history.
Yet somehow he’s not a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Belichick didn’t get the required votes in his first year of eligibility, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday that cited four unidentified sources.
Belichick needed 40 votes from the 50-person panel of media members and other Hall of Famers.
News of the snub stunned players, coaches, fans and anyone who has watched football. Patrick Mahomes called it “insane.” LeBron James said it’s “impossible, egregious, and quite frankly disrespectful.”
If Belichick’s resume isn’t worthy of a gold jacket and bronze statue, what constitutes a Hall of Fame career?
The Hall of Fame declined to comment before its class of 2026 is announced at NFL Honors in San Francisco on Feb. 5. Several voters immediately revealed they voted for Belichick and some called for those who didn’t to publicly say it.
Armando Salguero, OutKick’s Senior NFL Writer and Hall of Fame voter, was the one who presented Belichick in the Hall’s subcommittee meeting that selected him to advance to the full 50-member selection body. Salguero then presented Belichick to the full selector’s committee in a meeting on Jan. 13.
He is among the voters who selected Belichick and are urging the others to reveal themselves.
“They should identify themselves as the people who kept Belichick out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year,” Salguero wrote in his column. “I am saying that here, and would say as much to their face. Their votes sunk Belichick’s chances and embarrassed the Hall of Fame in the process.
“They make all selectors look bad, and they shouldn’t hide behind their minority vote to protect themselves at the expense of the wider group. I know it’s a wider group because I’ve spoken with a lot of selectors since our meeting, and they agreed with my vote for Belichick.”
Salguero, who is a longtime voter for the AP All-Pro team and the AP NFL awards, said the “Spygate” scandal kept Belichick out of the Hall.
Belichick was implicated in a sign-stealing scheme during the 2007 season and was fined $500,000 after New England was caught filming defensive signals from the New York Jets during a game.
“Spygate was the reason several selectors could not bring themselves to vote for Belichick, because they felt it sullied his records,” Salguero wrote.
In his presentation, Salguero said he pointed out that Belichick had a higher winning percentage (.693 to .580) after “Spygate” and won three Super Bowls and six conference titles. He had 14 double-digit win seasons and won more regular-season games after “Spygate” than 22 of the 28 coaches in the Hall of Fame.
“Those facts may have changed some minds on Belichick. But it didn’t change enough of them,” Salguero wrote.
Belichick was one of five Hall finalists among coaches, contributors and senior players who last appeared in a game in 2000 or earlier. Patriots owner Robert Kraft was the contributor finalist, with Roger Craig, Ken Anderson and L.C. Greenwood the players.
Between one and three of those finalists will be inducted into the Hall along with between three and five modern-era players from a group of 15 finalists.
The process for selection changed in 2025. The 50 voters now each pick three of the five and between one to three make it if they get at least 40 votes. A new rule also made coaches eligible one year after retiring instead of five.
Belichick sat out one season after his 24-year tenure with the Patriots ended in 2023. He just finished his first year coaching in college at North Carolina, where he went 4-8.
Mike Sando, an NFL writer for The Athletic, said he voted for Belichick and explained the process that could’ve led to the snub.
“Whatever the case, I would see this as a repudiation of the new voting rules implemented for 2025, not of Belichick or any candidate not making it,” Sando wrote on X.
The 73-year-old Belichick was a top defensive assistant coach with Giants under Bill Parcells. He left New York to coach Cleveland from 1991-95, joined the Patriots as an assistant in 1996, spent three seasons with the Jets and was hired by New England in 2000.
He led the Patriots with Tom Brady to six Super Bowl wins in nine appearances and had one 16-0 regular season. Belichick’s 333 wins in the regular season and playoffs with New England and Cleveland are the second most to Don Shula’s 347. He won AP NFL Coach of the Year three times.
“Just for the record: I voted for Belichick and am stunned — and embarrassed for our selection committee,” USA Today NFL columnist Jarrett Bell wrote on X. “At least 11 people from the 50-member panel voted against BB. At the very least they should reveal themselves as this begs for transparency. Don’t lump us all together.”

NHL ROUNDUP: SENATORS’ DEFENSE SUPPLIES OFFENSE IN WIN OVER AVS
Ottawa used its defense to spur its offense Wednesday as the six Senators defensemen tallied seven assists in the team’s 5-2 home victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
Tim Stutzle had a goal and an assist while Ridly Greig, Nick Cousins, Claude Giroux and Brady Tkachuk also scored. Blueliner Artem Zub finished with two assists, while Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, Tyler Kleven, Jordan Spence, and Nick Jensen also finished with assists.
James Reimer only needed to stop 16 shots as the Avalanche mustered a season-worst 18 shots, five fewer than their previous low.
Parker Kelly tallied his 11th of the season for Colorado, which fell for the third time in four games, and Valeri Nichushkin scored for the first time since he got a hat trick on New Year’s Eve. Brock Nelson assisted to give him points in six of his last seven contests, while Jack Drury and Keaton Middleton also set up scores.
Blue Jackets 5, Flyers 3
Sean Monahan scored the go-ahead goal with 3:28 remaining in the third period to fuel host Columbus past Philadelphia, who got a hat trick from Travis Konecny in the loss.
Konecny’s third goal came with 4:46 to play to tie the game at 3-3. Little more than a minute later, Monahan regained the lead for Columbus after converting a feed from defenseman Damon Severson at the doorstep. Charlie Coyle collected a goal and an assist on a night in which the Blue Jackets commemorated his 1,000th NHL game by giving him a silver stick, a Rolex and artwork.
Kirill Marchenko scored his team’s co-leading 19th goal, Erik Gudbranson added his first, and Mathieu Olivier found the empty net to send Columbus to its seventh win in the last eight games.
Islanders 5, Rangers 2
Ondrej Palat opened the scoring in his first game for the host New York Islanders to give his new team a lead it never relinquished in a win over the undermanned New York Rangers in Elmont, N.Y.
Palat, who was acquired along with two draft picks from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in exchange for right winger Maxim Tsyplakov, also had an assist for the Islanders, who have outscored the Rangers 12-2 while going 3-0-0 against their rivals this season. The teams conclude their season series Thursday night in Manhattan. Simon Holmstrom, Mathew Barzal, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Emil Heineman also scored for the Islanders.
Mika Zibanejad and Taylor Raddysh scored for the reeling Rangers, who scratched leading scorer Artemi Panarin, a pending unrestricted free agent, due to “roster management.” Newsday reported Panarin will not play for the Rangers before the Olympic break begins Feb. 6.

YANKEES ACQUIRE RELIEVER ANGEL CHIVILLI IN A TRADE WITH THE ROCKIES
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees added to their bullpen Wednesday by acquiring right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli in a trade with the Colorado Rockies.
They sent minor league infielder T.J. Rumfield to Colorado for Chivilli, a 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic with two seasons of major league experience. He had a 7.06 ERA in 43 relief appearances for the Rockies last year and a 4.55 ERA in 30 appearances with them in 2024.
Chivilli in his career has struck out 71 batters, walked 33 and allowed 20 home runs in 90 1/3 innings. To make room on the 40-man roster for Chivilli, the team designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment.
The move is the Yankees’ latest in an offseason that also included them getting lefty starter Ryan Weathers from Miami in exchange for four prospects. Coming off making the AL Division Series, they also brought back pitchers Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Tim Hill.

PATRICK REED IS LEAVING LIV GOLF. HE CAN RETURN TO THE PGA TOUR IN SEPTEMBER
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Patrick Reed is the second major champion to leave Saudi-funded LIV Golf, announcing Wednesday he will spend the rest of the year on the European tour with an eye on returning to the PGA Tour as early as September.
His stunning decision, just three days after he won the Dubai Desert Classic, comes the same week that five-time major champion Brooks Koepka returns to the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines.
“I’m a traditionalist at heart, and I was born to play on the PGA Tour, which is where my story began with my wife, Justine,” Reed said. “I am very fortunate for the opportunities that have come my way and grateful for the life we have created. I am moving forward in my career, and I look forward to competing on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. I can’t wait to get back out there and revisit some of the best places on earth.”
The PGA Tour sent a memo to players outlining the path back for players like Reed, who did not fit into the “Returning Member Program” that was offered only to those who had won a major or The Players Championship since 2022.
Reed won the Masters in 2018. The tour said he would be eligible to return a year from his last LIV Golf appearance on Aug. 24, 2025. He would not face additional discipline from the PGA Tour because Reed resigned his membership when he left for LIV, and he was not part of the antitrust lawsuit filed against the PGA Tour in 2022.

INDIANA RELEASES
INDIANA PACERS
INDIANA DOWNS CHICAGO
For much of Wednesday night, it looked like Pascal Siakam and the Pacers just didn’t have it. Indiana fell into an early hole and trailed Chicago for the majority of Wednesday’s contest. Siakam, the Pacers’ All-Star forward, had just seven points on 2-of-9 shooting through the first three quarters.
But they found something in the fourth quarter. Siakam scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the final frame, as Indiana (12-36) rallied from a 14-point deficit to pull out a 113-110 victory over the Bulls (23-24).
The Bulls led 101-87 following Jalen Smith’s basket with 7:14 to play, but Indiana continued to fight. Siakam scored eight points to lead a 12-2 run that pulled the hosts within four with 4:07 remaining.
On the other end, Nikola Vucevic’s hook shot bounced twice on the back iron before falling through the net. No one scored again until Aaron Nesmith buried a three from the left wing with 2:33 to play. Jay Huff then tied the game on the next possession, rattling in a three from the top of the key with 2:00 on the clock.
Coby White then knocked down a tough shot from the left corner, but Siakam answered with a mid-range jumper on the other end.
After White missed a jumper, Andrew Nembhard got in the lane and knocked down a step-back jumper to put Indiana in front with 38.9 seconds remaining — the Pacers’ first lead since the first quarter.
After a timeout, Vucevic banked in a go-ahead three with 32 seconds to play. Undeterred, the Pacers continued to attack, with Nesmith getting into the paint and converting a reverse layup with 13.9 seconds left.
The Bulls used their final timeout to set up the last play. Indiana had a foul to give, so Siakam fouled Josh Giddey with 9.6 seconds to play. Chicago then tried a lob to Matas Buzelis, which Siakam knocked out of bounds with 5.5 seconds remaining.
On their third inbound, Giddey passed to White, who drove to the rim but was met there by Nesmith, who blocked his shot. Johnny Furphy secured the rebound and made both free throws with 2.3 seconds to play.
Nembhard intercepted the ensuing inbound to seal a dramatic comeback win.
Siakam went 4-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to lead the charge.
“He led the charge in the last five minutes just with putting his will on the game,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said of Siakam’s fourth quarter performance. “By doing that, I thought our collective will was terrific.”
Nembhard added 18 points and nine assists as the Pacers pulled off another improbable comeback reminiscent of their many victories during last year’s playoff run.
“I think we’re damn near known for that,” Nembhard said. “We have it in us. We have experience of coming back in games and just understanding what it takes in those moments.”

IU INDY MEN’S BASKETBALL
UNDERMANNED JAGUARS FALL ON THE ROAD AT ROBERT MORRIS, 74-58
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team was unable to earn a season sweep of Robert Morris as the Jaguars fell to the Colonials on the road on Wednesday night (Jan. 28), 74-58. Ryan Prather led three Colonials in double-digits with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Darius Livingston finished with 14 points off the bench.
Micah Davis paced IU Indy (6-17, 2-10 HL) with 18 points and four assists and Reece Hagy added nine points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting. The Jaguars played without the league’s top scorer, junior Kyler D’Augustino, who suffered an injury in the closing minutes of the road win at Oakland.
“We definitely missed Kyler tonight, but we have other guys that are more than capable of stepping up and helping fill the void,” head coach Ben Howlett said. “Micah did a good job with the starting group, but then you miss his pop coming off the bench.
“We have another tough one on the road on Friday and we’ll be ready. We need to rest up and be ready for another tough opponent in Youngstown State.”
RMU (14-9, 6-6 HL) shot 49 percent overall and 11-of-22 (50 percent) from three while devouring the glass to a 41-24 margin. The Colonials converted 14 offensive boards into 15 second chance points while limiting IU Indy to just six second chance points and 26 points in the paint.
The game opened at a quick pace with both defenses struggling to stop the opponents’ attack. After RMU went ahead 14-0 on a Livingston trey, IU Indy responded with a Matt Compas layup and Maguire Mitchell trey to take a brief lead. The teams traded the lead 10 times before intermission, the last coming when RMU scored seven straight points after the Jags had taken a 27-24 lead on a Jaxon Edwards transition bucket.
RMU took a 36-33 lead with 2:09 left before halftime on a Ta’Zir Smith three and neither team scored over the final two-plus minutes as the hosts took the lead to the break.
The Jags never got over the hump in the second half and the hosts finally authored the knockout blow with a 9-0 run late in the game. IU Indy was within five at 56-51 with 8:37 to play when Edwards collected a steal and a left-handed dunk in transition before going scoreless for the next two minutes.
Josh Hill opened the run with a long jumper, followed by a Smith layup. After a pair of free throws, Prather added an open trey to push the lead to 14.
The Jaguars ended the game at 41 percent from the floor and a respectable 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from three. Edwards had eight points and six rebounds while Aiden Miller also had eight points and six rebounds off the bench, including a pair of treys. BALL STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SCRAPES OUT ROAD WIN AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Ball State women’s basketball team defeated Central Michigan 76-70 in a closely contested midweek Mid-American Conference matchup Wednesday night at McGuirk Arena.
The Cardinals improved their season record to 16-5 (8-1 MAC), while the Chippewas fell to 12-7 (6-3 MAC). Ball State led at the end of each quarter tonight despite both teams fighting hard in a physical battle which saw three Cardinals and four Chippewas foul out of the contest in the final frame.
The opening quarter was characterized by scrappy defense from both sides, ending in a low-scoring tie of 10-10 after the first five minutes and finishing with Ball State up 13-12 after the first quarter.
Ball State created more shot opportunities due to the forced turnovers, shooting a better percentage from the field in the first half. The Cardinals strong interior play and ability to get second-chance points from both Tessa Towers and Bree Salenbien allowed Ball State to maintain a slight 31-20 edge over Central Michigan at intermission.
After the break, Grace Kingery came to the rescue scoring nine points after shooting 2-of-3 from the 3-point line and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe which helped the Cardinals stay atop of the Chippewas at the end of the third quarter, 61-55.
In the final frame, Ball State’s defense and efficiency at the charity stripe proved to be the deciding factor as the Cardinals survived a late push by the Chippewas after BSU shot 9-of-16 from the free throw line to seal tonight’s six-point victory.
The Cardinals had five players reach double figures tonight which was led by Karsyn Norman with 17 points. Behind Norman was Towers who finished the night with 15 points. Hoosier State Supremacy
Indiana State has a chance this week to complete a perfect 4-0 campaign against the fellow in-state schools in the Missouri Valley Conference, as the Sycamores pay visits to Valparaiso (Thursday) and Evansville (Sunday).
The Sycamores already claimed home wins against both the Beacons (88-78, Jan. 1) and Purple Aces (77-71, Jan. 18), and own a 3-2 record against in-state schools this season.
Should the Sycamores complete the in-state sweep, it would mark the second time in the last three seasons that Indiana State went 4-0 against the other Indiana schools in the conference. Indiana State last went 4-0 against the in-state MVC schools in the 2023-24 season, and also accomplished the feat in the 2017-18 season, which was Valparaiso’s first in the MVC.

Entering Thursday’s game, Indiana State is averaging 72.7 points per gamem which ranks third in the conference and inside the top 100 nationally.
Top-10 Trees
Indiana State enters Thursday’s game ranked among the nation’s best in a pair of statistical categories, as the Sycamores are sixth in the nation in bench scoring (31.7 points per game) and ninth in free throw attempts (23.7 per game). Straight Off The Bench
Bench production has been a major component of Indiana State’s offense this season, with the Sycamores ranking among the national leaders in bench scoring. Indiana State’s reserves are averaging 31.7 points per game, a mark which ranks sixth nationally and tops the MVC by a wide margin.
The Sycamores have scored 30-plus bench points in 10 games this season, including four games with 40-plus bench points and a season-high 59 bench points against Eastern Illinois. EVANSVILLE MEN’S BASKETBALL
LATE RALLY LIFTS BULLDOGS TO WIN OVER UE MEN’S BASKETBALL
DES MOINES, Iowa – Trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half, Drake staged a huge late rally to defeat the University of Evansville men’s basketball team by a final score of 82-78 on Wednesday at the Knapp Center.
Evansville held a 59-40 lead with 12:57 remaining before the Bulldogs completed the game on a 42-19 run to take the victory. Leading the Purple Aces was Leif Moeller who posted 20 points 7 boards, and 7 assists, all team bests. Bryce Quinet registered 16 points while AJ Casey and Josh Hughes finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Jalen Quinn paced the Bulldogs with 26 points.
“We played really good basketball for most of the game, but it is unfortunate with how things turned out. I need to help our guys do better in the moment and overcome stretches by the opponents,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “We fought like crazy tonight – I will not question the heart and fight of our group.”
Five ties and three lead changes highlighted a competitive first half. The outside shooting for the Aces made the difference in the opening moments as the first triple of the evening saw Leif Moeller give UE its first lead at 3-1. After missing their first three field goal tries, the Bulldogs converted to tie it at 3-3. Triple by Bryce Quinet and Josh Hughes put UE up 9-5 inside the 16-minute mark.
Drake countered with six in a row to retake an 11-9 advantage, but seconds later, it was Hughes knocking down his second trey to put the Aces back on top. The Bulldogs tied the score on three occasions late in the half but would not regain the lead during that time. Two free throws by DU tied the game at 23-23 with 7:04 remaining. A jumper by Moeller put UE back in front as the squad slowly extended the lead in the final two minutes. After a layup by the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 31-27 with 1:34 on the clock, UE regained control.
Hughes’ third triple of the night was followed by Moeller’s fifth basket of the contest to push the lead to a game-high nine points at 36-27. Drake hit a triple in its final possession to make it a 6-point game at the break. UE had three players in double figures at halftime with Hughes and Moeller scoring 11 while Quinet tallied 10.
AJ Casey knocked down consecutive baskets to put the Aces back up by nine points before Alex Hemenway converted back-to-back 3-pointers to give Evansville its largest lead of the game. His 3-pointers put UE up 48-33 with 16:33 left in the game. Another 3-pointer by Hemenway solidified a 56-38 lead inside of 14 minutes left before Moeller’s third long ball pushed the advantage to a game-high 19 points – 59-40 as the game entered the final 13 minutes. Evansville connected on its opening 10 attempts in the second half to extend the lead.
The Bulldogs slowly chipped their way back into it as a pair of triples made it a 13-point game (63-50) with 9:44 on the clock. Four free throws over the next minute chopped the gap back to single digits. Casey ended the 7-0 Drake run with a bucket at the 7:29 mark. Despite the basket, the Bulldogs continued to claw their way back with eight in a row to make it a 3-point game – 65-62 – with 5:38 on the clock. Keying that rally was a 4-point play.
Quinet hit a layup before Moeller found Connor Turnbull for the alley-oop to push the lead back to seven points, but a tenacious Drake squad got back within four as the game went into its final three minutes. Two huge free throws by Quinet made it a 6-point game before Drake found its groove once again. Following a pair of free throws, Andrew Alia knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:23 on the clock to get his squad within one (72-71).
Connor Turnbull hit a free throw in the ensuing possession to push the edge to two points before Drake countered with a 3-point play that gave them the lead for good. They would hang on to win by a final of 82-78. Casey did his best to give UE a chance, hitting a triple with eight ticks remaining to make it a 1-point game, but the Aces would get no closer as they fell by four points.
UE shot a season-high 54.5% in the game marking the fourth time in five games the Purple Aces have shot over 50%. The Bulldogs shot 43.1% in the contest. Evansville led for 35:02 and trailed for just over two minutes in the game. UE remains on the road for a Saturday game at UNI. Tip is set for 3 p.m. at the McLeod Center.

VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL
BRUINS EDGE BEACONS IN TIGHTLY-CONTESTED BATTLE
The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team fell a point shy against first-place Belmont on Wednesday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center, as a valiant effort came up just short in a 78-77 setback. A game of runs saw seven ties and seven lead changes occur. Valpo led by four with 3:30 remaining in the second half, but the Bruins improved their record to 19-3 overall and 9-2 in Valley play to move into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
How It Happened
The Beacons scored the game’s first five points, including an early triple by Owen Dease (Evansville, Ind. / Evansville Reitz [Texas A&M Corpus Christi]).
The game went back-and-forth right away with Belmont eventually using an 8-0 run to build up a 22-13 lead at the 12:31 mark of the first half.
The Beacons responded with a 9-0 run of their own, including a traditional 3-point play by Justus McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West). That burst tied the game at 24 with nine minutes left in the half.
A game of runs continued as the guests scored the next 10 points to go up 34-24 with 6:10 to play in the half. The Brown & Gold once again responded, scoring the next eight including five from Carter Hopoi (Tauranga, New Zealand / Mount Maunganui College NZ) to make it 34-32 with 3:46 on the clock.
The Bruins scored the next five to go up seven, but Valpo fought to within four at halftime, down 42-38 at the break.
Belmont built up a five-point edge early in the second half, but an alley-oop dunk by Shon Tupuola (Brownsburg, Ind. / Brownsburg [Saint Mary-of-the-Woods]) and a stepback trey by Rakim Chaney (Rockford, Ill. / Rockford Auburn [212 Sports Academy]) leveled the score at 47.
The two teams continued to go back and forth. Valpo built up a four-point lead, then the Bruins reeled off seven straight to take a 57-53 lead with 10:26 on the clock. After Belmont led 60-56 with 9:55 to go, the seesaw nature of the contest continued as Valpo scored seven in a row to go up 64-60, culminating with a big Chaney 3-ball with 7:53 to play.
A jumper by Dease with 3:53 on the clock put Valpo ahead by four again at 68-64. Belmont surged in front 69-68 on a 3 with 2:32 to play and hit another go-ahead shot from long range that made it 72-69 with 1:51 left.
Valpo clawed within one as Tupuola tipped in a missed 3 with 50 seconds left to make it 72-71. The game’s next four points were on Belmont free throws. Chaney hit a triple in the closing seconds to cut the lead to two, and then after two more made free throws by the Bruins, Chaney hit a deep 3 at the buzzer to make the final score a one-point game.
Inside the Game
This ended a four-game home winning streak for the Beacons as Valpo dropped a game at the ARC for the first time since Dec. 21 vs. Murray State. The Beacons were previously 4-0 at home in the calendar year of 2026.
Six of Valpo’s last nine losses have come by six points or fewer. Valpo has dropped its last five games decided by five points or fewer.
This marked Valpo’s first game decided by the slimmest of margins since a 64-63 win over UNI on March 7, 2025 in the quarterfinal round of the MVC Tournament. Valpo hadn’t lost by a single point since 63-62 to Evansville on Feb. 3, 2024.
Four players finished in double figures for the Beacons, led by 15 apiece from Chaney and Dease. Chaney’s highest two scoring outputs in league play have both come against Belmont as Wednesday was second only to 17 on Jan. 13 in Nashville.
Dease scored at least 15 points for the third time in his last four games and tallied doubled figures for the fifth time in his last six.
Pettigrew contributed 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. The rookie has scored in double figures in six of his last eight.
Tupuola went 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line on his way to 12 points, his highest total since 21 on Nov. 19 at Cleveland State.
Valpo won the turnover battle 15-9, committing single-figure turnovers for the eighth time this season. Valpo has committed 11 or fewer in 16 out of 21 games.
Fifth-year senior Brody Whitaker (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle [University of Indianapolis [Marian]) had a team-best plus-minus of +9 in 22 minutes.
Hopoi was 2-for-2 from the field on his way to six points.
This one-point loss came against The Valley’s top team in terms of KenPom (66) and NET (62).
Belmont’s Eion Dillon was 7-of-11 shooting and 5-of-7 from 3 while scoring a game-high 23 points.

The Knights were able to take control once more with four baskets from Elhadj Diallo, Gustin, and Franks to take the 21-13 lead.
Spring Arbor continued to chip away at Marian’s lead, but the Knights were able to keep the runs minimal at two baskets with Luke Carroll, Dylan Moles, and Diallo maintaining the nine-point lead. The Cougars gained momentum and went on a three-basket run, but Franks was able to break up the run with a jumper. Each team traded off baskets before Spring Arbor went on a five-basket run to take the one-point lead. Moles was able to close out the half with a layup to take back the 36-35 lead for Marian.
Humphrey Jr. opened up the second half with a two-pointer, but Spring Arbor was able to quickly go on a streak with three baskets, taking the three-point lead. MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
NO. 5 MARIAN SECURES SEASON SWEEP OVER NO. 18 SPRING ARBOR
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Backed by Abbey McNally’s 12th double-double of the season, the Marian women’s basketball rolled past No. 18 Spring Arbor on Wednesday night by a final score of 55-40, logging the team’s second consecutive victory. Marian improves to 19-2 on the year and 9-2 in league play, securing a sweep over the Cougars while taking the full head-to-head for league standings.
Marian started out hot on Wednesday night, getting a basket from both Abbey McNally and Kiley McNally in the first 80 seconds of the game, while a jolt of five Olivia Faust points gave the Knights an early 9-4 edge. Spring Arbor forced tough looks for Marian, which resulted in a two-minute scoring drought, but the Knights would come back to life with a pair of Abbey McNally baskets. Kiley McNally finished off the quarter’s scoring with an open layup from Madisyn Bailey, holding the team’s lead at five as Marian controlled the board 18-13.
Spring Arbor challenged Marian in the second quarter after falling behind on its home court, exploiting small cracks in the Knights’ armor, going on a 6-2 run in the first three minutes of the period. Slashing the lead to one, the Cougars continued to hound the Knights early in quarter two, but an Abbey McNally steal led to a transition score for Taylor Double, allowing Marian to hold steady. McNally and Eva Fisher ignited a string of scores midway through the quarter, embarking the team on a run of 7-2, pushing the advantage to eight.
Fisher would add another three points to her scoring totals before the half ended to bring Marian to a team total of 32 points, as the Knights led by as many as 10 in the last two minutes of the period before ultimately going into halftime on top 32-27.
The third quarter rocked back and forth early after halftime, with the Knights and Cougars trading scores and stops. Defense began to take over after an Abbey McNally bucket with 8:25 to play in the period, as the game endured a drought of nearly three mintues before Taylor Double added to Marian’s lead. The Knights methodically ran their offense after the Double score, working the clock for key shots, which was evident as Marian ended the low-scoring third quarter on a 6-0 run. Spring Arbor was held scoreless for the final 4:49 of the third quarter, as four turnovers forced by Marian helped the Knights maintain a 44-31 lead after three quarters.
Leading by 13 points entering the final quarter, Marian let its defense do the talking as they closed out the victory, holding Spring Arbor to just two points in the first six and a half minutes of play in the fourth, as the stretch of scoreless Cougar basketball extended to over 11 minutes of game play. The Knights’ strong defensive efforts made up for their offensive shortcomings, as the team struggled to score the basketball in the final stanza, starting the period on an 0-5 start from the floor with a pair of turnovers. Eva Fisher finally stopped the scoreless Marian streak to hold the lead in double figures, and in the last three minutes, buckets from Kenna Kirby and Kennedy Coleman iced away the Knights’ 55-40 victory.
Abbey McNally paced the Marian offense with 16 points, recording double-double number 12 as she snared 15 rebounds, 10 alone on the defensive end of the court. Eva Fisher matched her career-high with 12 points off the bench, and Olivia Faust scored nine points. Madisyn Bailey had a balanced game with six points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Kenna Kirby had a bench-high seven rebounds.
Marian finishes its two-game road stint on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Goshen College with aspirations of extending its winning streak to three. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
