Quintrevion Wisner gained 155 rushing yards for the Longhorns (9-3, 6-2 SEC), who dominated the second half after trailing 10-3 at halftime. Manning completed 14 of 29 passes for 179 yards and rushed for 53 yards on seven attempts. Marcel Reed completed 20 of 32 passes for 180 yards and two fourth-quarter interceptions for Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1). He also gained 71 yards on 12 carries for the Aggies, who aren’t in danger of missing the College Football Playoff, but the setback eliminates Texas A&M from a spot in next weekend’s SEC championship game. Georgia clinched a spot due to the Aggies’ loss. The Bulldogs will play either Alabama or Ole Miss, depending on the Crimson’s Tide result against Auburn on Saturday. KC Concepcion rushed for a touchdown for Texas A&M. No. 2 Indiana 56, Purdue 3 Fernando Mendoza passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Kaelon Black rushed for two more scores as the Hoosiers rolled past the host Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Ind. Roman Hemby ran for 152 yards and another touchdown as the Hoosiers (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) cemented the best start in school history while locking up a spot in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis on Dec. 6. The Hoosiers will face Ohio State, Michigan, or Oregon, with their opponent to be determined after the three teams play Saturday. Indiana outgained Purdue 548-282, including a 355-44 edge on the ground. Purdue (2-10, 0-9) endeavored to make the contest close in the early going before fading, closing coach Barry Odom’s debut season on a 10-game losing streak. Ryan Browne was 25-for-47 for 238 yards and an interception. Nitro Tuggle gained 80 yards on five receptions and Antonio Harris had 15 carries for 31 yards. No. 4 Georgia 16, No. 23 Georgia Tech 9 Nate Frazier ran for 108 yards, Gunner Stockton threw a 7-yard pass to Zachariah Branch for the game’s only touchdown as the Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Stockton completed just 11 of 21 passes for 70 yards and threw an interception, but Georgia (11-1) held Georgia Tech to just 69 rushing yards in its eighth straight win in the series. Haynes King threw for 181 yards and an interception for Georgia Tech (9-3), which dropped three of its last four games to finish the regular season. No. 7 Ole Miss 38, Mississippi State 19 Trinidad Chambliss threw four touchdown passes, De’Zhaun Stribling caught two of them and the Rebels all but clinched a spot in the CFP with a victory against the Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl at Starkville, Miss. Chambliss completed 23 of 34 passes for 359 yards and the Rebels (11-1, 7-1 SEC) overcame any distractions about head coach Lane Kiffin’s potential departure to win their third straight game against their in-state rival. They improved to 5-1 in the Egg Bowl under Kiffin. Freshman Kamario Taylor made his first start and rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 178 yards to lead the Bulldogs (5-7, 1-7). Mississippi State fell short of bowl eligibility for a third consecutive season after 13 straight bowl appearances. No. 13 Utah 31, Kansas 21 Devon Dampier passed for three touchdowns, Elijah Davis notched a crucial pick-6 in the fourth quarter and the Utes ended their Big 12 campaign with a win over the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan. With Utah clinging to a 17-14 lead with about eight minutes to go, Davis picked off Jalon Daniels — one of three Utes interceptions — and dashed 97 yards for his second TD interception return of the season for Utah (10-2, 7-2). Dampier was 15 of 25 for 253 yards and two TD passes to receiver Larry Simmons, who tallied 97 yards on three catches. The win briefly kept alive Utah’s hopes at a Big 12 title game appearance, but No. 20 Arizona State’s loss to No. 25 Arizona later in the day eliminated the Utes. The Jayhawks (5-7, 3-6) lost their third consecutive game in a bid to become bowl eligible and fell for the fifth time in their final six contests. No. 25 Arizona 23, No. 20 Arizona State 7 Noah Fifita passed for 286 yards with a touchdown and the Wildcats entered Sun Devils territory 11 times as Arizona topped its in-state rival in Tempe. Arizona (9-3, 6-3 Big 12) has won five consecutive games and three out of the last four games against the 20th-ranked Sun Devils (8-4, 6-3). The Wildcats forced five turnovers, including three interceptions of Jeff Sims, who also fumbled and lost the ball on an exchange with Raleek Brown for another turnover. Sims was 11 of 25 for 114 yards, while Fifita completed 28 of 45 passes. After Taye Brown recovered the fumbled exchange on the Arizona State 6-yard line with 12:22 left in the third quarter, Fifita connected on a 9-yard touchdown pass with Cameron Barmore to put Arizona ahead 10-7. ===== NFL NEWS WEEK 13 NFL CAPSULES New Orleans Saints (2-9) at Miami Dolphins (4-7)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Dolphins -5.5, Total 42.5Series Rewind: Miami has only one victory in the past four meetings, a 20-3 victory in 2021 with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle snagging 10 passes for 92 yards. His 1-yard TD catch in the third quarter put Miami in front 17-3. Self-described delusional pass rusher Bradley Chubb reminded naysayers the Dolphins are very much in the playoff picture if they refuse to lose the rest of the regular season. Implausible as it might seem, the Dolphins draw a home date with two-win New Orleans to close out November and keep hope alive for a late-season miracle. The Miami Dolphins were one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL when they lost seven of their first nine games. But then they routed the Buffalo Bills 30-13 on Nov. 9, beat the Washington Commanders 16-13 in overtime in Madrid and return to action Sunday after a bye week. What running back De’Von Achane has done has been important, as well as coach Mike McDaniel’s points of appreciation for Tua Tagovailoa’s recent rise. Achane, who had 120 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards against the Commanders, is averaging 115.5 yards from scrimmage. New Orleans has a similar dual-threat running back in Alvin Kamara, but he’s fighting multiple injuries, a drain for an offense that didn’t score a touchdown against the Falcons and hasn’t produced as many as 20 points in any of the past six games. The Saints are last in the NFL in red-zone touchdown percentage. They made three trips into the red zone against Atlanta and came away with a total of three points. Houston Texans (6-5) at Indianapolis Colts (8-3)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Colts -3.5, Total 44.5Series Rewind: Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is 3-1 against the Colts, who haven’t won the division title since 2014. Much more than legitimacy as an AFC contender is at stake for Indianapolis in the Colts’ first home game since Oct. 26. The Texans have won three in a row to climb another rung closer in the South standings and now the two-time defending division champs are closer to being whole on offense. C.J. Stroud sat out the past three games in concussion protocol while Houston leaned on a defensive front with a dynamite pair of edge rushers crashing opposing quarterbacks. Danielle Hunter has 11 sacks and Will Anderson Jr. is at 10 1/2 this season. Stroud was a full practice participant on Wednesday and Thursday, signaling a potential return this week. Almost any outcome except the Tennessee Titans rising to the top remains possible in the division with Jacksonville (7-4) separating the Colts and third-place Texans. Indianapolis has lost two of three and visits the Jaguars next week. The bad news for Indy is QB Daniel Jones (fractured fibula) is far from healthy and has been turnover-prone this month. Anthony Richardson, Jones’ backup, has Indy’s only win over Houston the past two seasons and was drafted by the Colts after the Texans selected Stroud and Anderson with consecutive picks in the 2023 draft. But the Colts can stem the Texans’ pass rush by feeding NFL rushing leader Jonathan Taylor, who has 1,067 yards from scrimmage (133.4 per game) and 10 TDs (nine rushing) in eight career games vs. Houston. San Francisco 49ers (8-4) at Cleveland Browns (3-8)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: 49ers -5, Total 36.5Series Rewind: The Browns have won five of the past seven meetings, including a 19-17 home win in 2023 when San Francisco’s Brock Purdy was just 12-of-27 passing. The 49ers have won their two games since Purdy (toe) returned, but he has been far from perfect. Purdy threw three interceptions in Monday’s 20-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers and averaged just 6.0 yards per passing attempt. For the season, Purdy has been picked off seven times in four games. Star running back Christian McCaffrey has 12 touchdowns (seven rushing, five receiving) and leads the NFL with 81 catches. San Francisco’s points allowed versus Carolina was a season low for a defense that earlier sustained season-ending injuries to star linebacker Fred Warner and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa. Now the 49ers will look to confuse Cleveland’s Shedeur Sanders, who will be making his second career start. Sanders guided the Browns to a 24-10 road win over the Las Vegas Raiders in start No. 1, passing for 209 yards and one touchdown while being intercepted once. The Cleveland defense racked up 10 sacks, including three by Myles Garrett and 2 1/2 from Maliek Collins. Garrett has a league-leading 18 sacks – five more than any other NFL player — and has seven sacks over the past two games. He also is taking dead aim at the single-season record of 22.5 shared by Michael Strahan (2001) and T.J. Watt (2021). Los Angeles Rams (9-2) at Carolina Panthers (6-6)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Rams -10.5, Total 45.5Series Rewind: Los Angeles has won the past two meetings after the Panthers prevailed in six of the previous seven contests. The Rams have won six consecutive games and own the best record in the NFC. Los Angeles allows a league-low 16.3 points per game and last week’s 34-7 rout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers marked the fifth team the Rams allowed 10 or fewer points this season. Byron Young has stood out with a career-high nine sacks and fellow linebacker Nate Landman leads the team with 98 tackles and four forced fumbles. Matthew Stafford has been superb with a league-high 30 touchdown passes – only three others have 20 or more – and just two interceptions. He’s in a two-horse MVP race with New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. The Panthers are just a half-game behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South but offensive inconsistency is a problem. Carolina has scored 30 points three times and also has scored 13 or fewer points on six occasions. Bryce Young passed for a franchise-record 448 yards against the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 16 and has topped 200 yards just one other time this season. Cornerback Jaycee Horn has a career-high five interceptions but is dealing with a concussion and hasn’t practiced yet this week. The Panthers will be without safety Tre’von Moehrig (81 tackles), who was suspended one game for unsportsmanlike conduct due to an incident in last week’s loss to the 49ers. Arizona Cardinals (6-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-8)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Buccaneers -2.5, Total 43.5Series Rewind: The Buccaneers won each of the last two meetings by three points, including a 19-16 overtime win in overtime on Christmas Day 2022 when Tom Brady was the quarterback. Baker Mayfield has made 45 consecutive starts since joining Tampa Bay, but that streak is in jeopardy due to his sprained left shoulder. Mayfield said it will come down to “pain tolerance” per whether he will be able to take the field. He hurt the shoulder multiple times during last week’s 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Teddy Bridgewater, who last started an NFL game in Week 17 of 2022 for the Miami Dolphins, is being prepared to start if necessary. The Buccaneers, who have lost three straight games and four of five, hope to have running back Bucky Irving (shoulder/foot) back after a seven-game absence. Arizona has lost three consecutive contests and eight of the past nine. Jacoby Brissett will be making his seventh consecutive start in place of Kyler Murray (foot). He has thrown for 769 yards on 80-for-106 passing (75.5%) over the past two games. Star tight end Trey McBride has caught five or more passes in 13 straight games, tying the club record set by Larry Fitzgerald. He also is tied for second in the NFL with 80 receptions. Wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. (appendicitis) is expected to play after missing the past two games. Atlanta Falcons (4-7) at New York Jets (2-9)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Falcons -2.5, Total 39.5Series Rewind: The Falcons lead the all-time series 9-5 and have won the last three overall games vs. the Jets and the last three games at the Jets. Atlanta slim playoff chances alive last week by snapping their five-game losing streak at New Orleans. They’ll have another chance to do so Sunday against their second straight two-win opponent in the Jets. Kirk Cousins, making his first start of the season after Michael Penix Jr. sustained a season-ending partially torn ACL, completed 16 of 23 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He was supported by a Falcons defense which had five sacks to run its season total up to 39, third-most in the league. Half of last week’s sacks came from rookies James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, who have combined for nine this season. Unfortunately for Cousins, it sounds like he’ll be without star receiver Drake London (knee) again this week. He hasn’t practiced and was labeled doubtful. New York’s Tyrod Taylor will make his second straight start since Justin Fields was benched two weeks ago. He completed 17 of 28 passes for 228 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 23-10 loss to the Ravens. In four games this season, Taylor has completed 61.9% of his passes for 601 yards, four touchdowns and four picks. The Jets currently rank last in the league in passing offense (145.7), nearly 18 yards less than any other team, and are still looking for their first 400-yard receiver this season Jacksonville Jaguars (7-4) at Tennessee Titans (1-10)Sunday, 1 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Jaguars -6.5, Total 41.5Series Rewind: Jacksonville has won five of the last six games in this division rivalry, but Tennessee possesses a 35-26 lead in the all-time series. Jacksonville enters this week in playoff position as the No. 6 seed and riding a two-game winning streak coming off last week’s 27-24 overtime win over the Arizona Cardinals. Four of the team’s final six games will be played against division opponents, starting this week with the first of two matchups against the Tennessee Titans. A big part of the Jaguars’ recent success has been an uptick in pass-rush success. Coen challenged his defense, which had eight sacks through the first seven games, to make a bigger impact. The Jaguars responded with 13 sacks in four games since their bye week, including a season-high six last week. Receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle) returned to full practice participation yesterday and appears possible to return from his three-game absence, but defensive end Travon Walker (knee) hasn’t practiced this week and may be missing his second straight game. Tennessee carries a six-game overall losing streak and a 10-game home losing streak into this week. Even with a depleted receiver room, Cam Ward completed 28 of 42 passes for 256 yards and a touchdown with a team-high 37 rushing yards and his first career rushing TD. The Titans have been putting up more of a fight recently despite the losses continuing to stack. After six of the Titans’ first seven losses were by 10-plus points – including four by 18-plus points – their last three have all one-score losses. Minnesota Vikings (4-7) at Seattle Seahawks (8-3)Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Seahawks -11.5, Total 41.5Series Rewind: Eleven months ago Sam Darnold came up clutch for the Vikings and beat Seattle 27-24, answering a Seahawks touchdown with a 30-second TD drive by finding Justin Jefferson for a 39-yard strike that proved to be the game winner. Wanderlust might only be the fault of the Minnesota brass this week with the Vikings headed to Seattle to see what they’re missing in Darnold. The Vikings who also set free Daniel Jones into the market in March — he’s 8-3 with the Colts — are trudging forward with the developmental plan at the position centered on J.J. McCarthy growing rapidly. But he’s been hurt — and spent the week in concussion protocol — leaving the Vikings in an unsolicited get-to-know moment with undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. Brosmer’s likely starting debut comes in a tough environment, even if Seattle has been well shy of perfect at home. Darnold’s 69.5 completion percentage is top five in the league, just ahead of Jones. McCarthy is last (54.1%) among quarterbacks with multiple starts. Seattle’s offense relies on Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who caught two TD passes at Tennessee last week. He leads the NFL in receiving yards with 1,313 and already has eclipsed the franchise record. With six games remaining, he could become the NFL’s first 2,000-yard receiver. Las Vegas Raiders (2-9) at Los Angeles Chargers (7-4)Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Chargers -9.5, Total 40.5Series Rewind: The Chargers swept the season series last year for the first time since 2018. They’ve won three straight against the Raiders to trim their deficit in the all-time series to 69-61-2. Los Angeles has had two weeks to dwell on its worst loss of Jim Harbaugh’s tenure, a 35-6 loss at Jacksonville. It hopes to find a bit more continuity against the Raiders after Justin Herbert had a career-low 81 yards passing, was sacked twice and was checked for a concussion late in the first half in the last game. Herbert has been sacked 35 times, fourth most in the NFL. A Raiders defense which ranks 27th in the league with 20 sacks this season — despite having a standout pass-rusher in Maxx Crosby — may be a get-right opportunity for the Chargers. Los Angeles opened the practice window for rookie RB Omarion Hampton (ankle) this week, and he was limited Wednesday and Thursday in practice. Las Vegas has its own offensive issues, so much so that Pete Carroll fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly last Sunday after the team scored just 10 points in its fifth straight loss against Cleveland. Its offense is third worst in the NFL with 268.9 yards per game, next to last with 79.5 yards rushing and tied for worst at 15.0 points per game. Quarterback Geno Smith has Herbert beat, having been sacked 41 times this season, including 10 last week. Crosby (knee) returned to full practice participation Thursday after he was limited Wednesday. Tight end Michael Mayer (ankle) has not practiced this week after sustaining an injury in last week’s game.New Buffalo Bills (7-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5)Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Bills -3.5, Total 46.5Series Rewind: After Pittsburgh dominated from 1993 through 2016 — winning 10 of 11 meetings, including playoffs — the Bills turned the tables during the Josh Allen era. Buffalo has won four of the past five, most recently 31-17 in the wild-card round in January 2024. This game carries significant implications for both teams as they try to boost their AFC playoff hopes. Some players might deflect the importance of the matchup, but Josh Allen leaned in, saying his Bills are operating with an “extremely high sense of urgency” after their 23-19 loss against the Houston Texans last week. The reigning NFL MVP has completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 2,709 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 starts. He’s also dealing with a right elbow injury but has been a full participant at practice. Speaking of quarterback injuries, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers sat out last week’s 31-28 loss to the Chicago Bears with an injury to his non-throwing wrist. He was considered a full participant in Thursday’s practice. If he can’t go, Mason Rudolph would draw a second straight start. Jaylen Warren leads the Steelers with 604 rushing yards, and DK Metcalf is tops in the passing game with 573 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 42 catches. The Bills have continued to operate a terrific ground game, with James Cook ranking second in the league at 1,084 rushing yards. They may also give Brandin Cooks his debut after signing the free agent receiver this week. Denver Broncos (9-2) at Washington Commanders (3-8)Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ETFanDuel odds: Broncos -5.5, Total 43.5Series Rewind: The all-time series is knotted 8-8 when counting Washington’s win in Super Bowl XXII. The teams have alternated wins and losses in the past eight meetings, with the Commanders prevailing 35-33 in 2023. The Broncos and Commanders are each coming out of their bye week but are pointed in distinctly opposite directions. Denver has won eight straight and most recently defeated division rival and AFC champion Kansas City 22-19. Washington has had the bottom fall out with six losses in a row, including 16-13 in overtime to the Miami Dolphins two weeks ago in Madrid. Broncos coach Sean Payton pointed out one of his team’s few deficiencies was discipline; they’ve committed a league-high 93 penalties for 883 yards, and they’re minus-3 in turnover ratio, with only nine takeaways. Denver’s third-ranked defense has carried it while Bo Nix has been hot and cold. After Nix was held to 173 and 150 yards in low-scoring wins over Houston and Las Vegas, he amassed 295 yards in the Chiefs win. Nix might be licking his chops against a Commanders defense that ranks 31st in yards allowed and 28th in scoring. Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels (non-throwing elbow) returned to practice Wednesday, although Marcus Mariota is expected to make his sixth start Sunday. Wide receivers Terry McLaurin (quad) and Noah Brown (groin/knee) also returned Wednesday and practiced fully on Thursday. Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain II (pectoral) was a full participant at Thursday’s practice. ===== MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS TOP 25 BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 5 UCONN ROLLS PAST NO. 13 ILLINOIS Solo Ball scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack as No. 5 UConn held on for a 74-61 nonconference victory over No. 13 Illinois on Friday in New York. The Gators received 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from Thomas Haugh, and a 13-point, 10-rebound performance from Rueben Chinyelu. Ryan Mela (17 points) and Jaylin Sellers (14) were the leading scorers for Providence (4-4). No. 24 Vanderbilt 96, Saint Mary’s 71 Duke Miles concluded a week to remember with a 25-point outing and the Commodores used a dominant first half to defeat the Gaels in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas. Miles, who won the same tournament with Oklahoma last season, paced the Commodores with 28 points in the opener against Western Kentucky and 20 in the semifinals against VCU. Jalen Washington added 19 points on Friday for Vanderbilt (8-0), which never trailed. Paulius Murauskas guided Saint Mary’s (8-1) with 24 points and Mikey Lewis scored 19. The Gaels committed 16 turnovers that turned into 20 points for the Commodores. ===== WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL WOMEN’S TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 10 IOWA STATE BLOWS PAST MARQUETTE Audi Crooks scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, helping No. 10 Iowa State jump ahead early and coast to an 84-73 win over Marquette Friday in the opening round of the Coconut Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Golden Eagles (4-2) closed the game on a 10-0 run to make the final score more respectable. Iowa State held a hefty rebounding advantage (44-26), anchored by a double-double from Jada Williams (15 points, 11 rebounds) and nine rebounds from Arianna Jackson. The Cyclones will play the winner of Friday afternoon’s Indiana-Gonzaga game in the Blue Heron Division championship on Sunday. Jaidynn Mason led Marquette with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, and Skylar Forbes tallied 13 but was just 1-of-5 from 3-point range. No. 12 North Carolina 85, Kansas State 73 Lanie Grant hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Tar Heels to a victory over the Wildcats in the Cancun Challenge at Riviera Maya, Mexico. North Carolina (7-1) shot over 50% as a team, making 14 of 26 threes (53.8%). Indya Nivar, Nyla Harris and Nyla Brooks scored 14 points apiece, with Nivar also adding a game-high seven assists and four steals. Izela Arenas led Kansas State (5-4) with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench. The Wildcats shot 56.3% from the floor (27 of 48 but were 50% from the free-throw line (12 of 24). No. 13 Ole Miss 65, Wisconsin 56 The Rebels closed on a 9-2 run to hold off the Badgers in the Dayton Beach Classic. Sira Thienou, who shot just 2-of-8 from 3-point range on the day, knocked down a pivotal triple with 1:17 remaining that kicked off the game-ending run for the Rebels (6-0). Christeen Iwuala’s 20 points and eight rebounds guided Ole Miss. Wisconsin (6-2) pulled within a two-point margin with 1:44 remaining, rebounding from an eight-point third quarter. The Badgers could not hold off the Rebels in the closing stretch, however. Destiny Howell paced Wisconsin with 14 points and five boards. No. 16 Kentucky 101, Morgan State 39 Five Wildcats scored in double figures in a dominant win over the Lady Bears at the Puerto Rico Shootout in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Asia Boone’s 21 points, 15 of which came on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range, led Kentucky’s balanced scoring. Kaelyn Carroll knocked down another five 3-pointers on 10 attempts for 15 points off the bench. Jordan Obi scored 17 points, Clara Strack chipped in 13 and Teonni Key went 7-of-7 from the floor on the way to 16 points for the Wildcats (8-1). Kentucky took over early, outscoring Morgan State (1-8) 24-7 in the first quarter. Mihjae Hayes led Morgan State with 13 points. No. 18 Southern California 82, Pepperdine 52 An 11-0 first-quarter run set the Trojans on their way to a rout of the Waves in Los Angeles. The Trojans (5-2) held the visiting Waves (4-2) without a point for more than five minutes in the opening period, setting the tone on a defensively dominant night for USC. Pepperdine shot just 1-of-13 from 3-point range and committed 18 turnovers, which USC countered with 10-of-25 shooting from outside. Kara Dunn, who led the Trojans with 19 points, shot 3-of-4 from long range. Jazzy Davidson knocked down three of her six 3-point attempts on the way to 18 points. Pepperdine was led by Elli Guiney (12 points) and Meghan Fiso (11). No. 24 Oklahoma State 74, Charlotte 65 Achol Akot led five Cowgirls (7 of nine) in double figures as they held off the 49ers for a win in the opening game of the Cayman Islands Classic at George Town, Cayman Islands. Akot tallied 16 points with eight rebounds, leading an effort on the boards that saw Oklahoma State nearly double up Charlotte in rebounds (47-25). Lena Girardi scored 15 while Amari Whiting added 13 and Micah Gray and Stailee Heard scored 10 apiece. Charlotte was 7-for-11 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter to trim a deficit that was as large as 18 points. Zoe Best made 5 of 10 threes to rack up a game-high 18 points, and Princess Anderson and Tanajah Hayes added 16 points apiece. No. 25 NC State 110, Southern Miss 56 Led by Khamil Pierre’s 18-point, 16-rebound double-double, all five starters scored in double figures as the Wolfpack romped past the Lady Eagles in the Yucatan Division of the Cancun Challenge. NC State (5-3) pounced on the Golden Eagles early with a 30-point first-quarter onslaught. The Wolfpack scored the game’s first 11 points, with four different players scoring in the initial stretch. Tilda Trygger scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Zamareya Jones and Zoe Brooks each added 14 points, and Qadence Samuels finished with 11 points. NC State got another 11 and 10 points off the bench from Destiny Lunan and Adelaide Jernigan. Carly Keats and Meloney Thames each scored 12 points for the Lady Eagles (6-2). ===== NBA NEWS NBA ROUNDUP: LUKA DONCIC BURNS MAVS, LAKERS SWEEP NBA CUP GROUP Luka Doncic scored 35 points and dished out 11 assists against his former team and the Los Angeles Lakers finished perfect in NBA Cup group play with a 129-119 victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Austin Reaves scored 38 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Deandre Ayton paired 17 points with eight rebounds, and LeBron James had 13 points and seven assists in his fourth game of the season after returning from sciatica. Doncic improved to 3-0 against Dallas after his surprising trade from the Mavericks in February. Los Angeles, which had already advanced to the quarterfinals of the NBA Cup, finished 4-0 in West Group B. P.J. Washington amassed 22 points and nine rebounds and Anthony Davis added 12 points for the Mavericks in his first game on his former home court after he was traded to Dallas in the Doncic deal. He was making his return after missing the previous 14 games with a calf injury. Thunder 123, Suns 119 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 37 points to help Oklahoma City record its 11th consecutive win, a home victory over Phoenix in an NBA Cup game that saw both teams advance. The win sends the Thunder to the knockout round of the NBA Cup after they went 4-0 in West Group A. The Suns, who lost for just the third time in 12 games overall, fell to 3-1 in NBA Cup action. However, they still earned a wild-card spot as the Western Conference’s best second-place team, so they will join the Thunder in the knockout round. Oklahoma City also improved to 19-1, becoming the fifth team in NBA history to win at least 19 games in the season’s first 20. After capturing the first nine games of the winning streak by 13 or more points, Oklahoma City has now won back-to-back tight games after beating Minnesota by eight on Wednesday. Spurs 139, Nuggets 136 Devin Vassell scored 18 of his season-high 35 points in the fourth quarter and visiting San Antonio beat Denver to win West Group C and advance to the quarterfinals of the NBA Cup. Julian Champagnie scored 25 points — also a season high — and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Spurs. San Antonio sealed the win my making 7 of 8 free throws in the last minute. Jamal Murray put up 37 points for Denver, which went 2-2 in NBA Cup play. Nikola Jokic had 21 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, and Cameron Johnson contributed a season-high 28 points. Hawks 130, Cavaliers 123 Jalen Johnson produced his second triple-double of the season and Atlanta held off visiting Cleveland as both teams failed to advance in the NBA Cup. Johnson finished with 29 points, shooting 9-for-18 from the floor, to go with 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Atlanta has won three of its last four, while Cleveland has lost two in a row. Jazz 128, Kings 119 Keyonte George scored 31 points, Lauri Markkanen added 28 and Utah avoided a winless round of pool play in the NBA Cup with a victory over Sacramento in Salt Lake City. Utah, which finished 1-3 in West Group A, snapped a four-game skid. The Jazz used a 12-2 run early in the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished. Zach LaVine hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, part of a 6-of-9 period on his way to a game-high 34 points for the Kings. Sacramento ended up 0-4 in NBA Cup action. Grizzlies 112, Clippers 107 Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 24 points and Zach Edey grabbed 19 rebounds to help Memphis rally to a win in Inglewood, Calif., in the NBA Cup finale for both teams. The Grizzlies went 3-1 in West Group B play but didn’t advance to the knockout round. Los Angeles went 2-2. Kawhi Leonard scored 39 points on 15-of-24 shooting but couldn’t prevent the Clippers from losing for the 12th time in the past 14 games. James Harden had 23 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for Los Angeles. Kris Dunn added 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and John Collins logged 10 points and seven rebounds. ===== NHL NEWS NHL ROUNDUP: WILD END AVS’ 10-GAME WINNING STREAK Matt Boldy scored the decisive goal in a shootout, lifting the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 win over the Avalanche on Friday afternoon in Saint Paul, Minn., ending Colorado’s 10-game winning streak. TEXANS DEFENSE POSES NEXT BIG OBSTACLE AS COLTS TRY TO SOLVE RECENT OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones has been feeling the heat. There were concerns about his seven turnovers in the two games before Indy’s bye week. There were questions about his ineffective play late in last week’s loss at Kansas City. Some even wondered if the two losses in the past three games may signal a return to his norm after a strong start. Sure, Jones realizes it’s all part of life when you play the sport’s most important position. Yet those past three games also exposed something else — Jones’ struggle to deal with an increased pass rush. It’s not just a problem for Jones, it’s something Indy’s offense must fix and fast. “Most teams, they’ll look back at what we’ve done throughout the year, look at what worked the past few weeks and say ‘OK, that’s what’s been working, let’s try that,’” Colts center Tanor Bortolini said Monday. “Teams are going to try to do things others have done well, and I think that’s something we’ll see more of going forward.” The next test comes Sunday when Indy (8-3) faces another stout defense when it hosts Houston (6-5). Like the Chiefs, the two-time defending AFC South champs are trying to play their way back into the playoff mix. And like the Chiefs, the Texans are more than capable of dialing up pressure and forcing miscues. Just ask reigning league MVP Josh Allen, who was sacked eight times and threw two interceptions in his worst game this season in last week’s 23-19 loss. Houston has 16 sacks in its past three games, all wins. And while Jones avoided taking any sacks last week, he went down 15 times in the previous three games and Kansas City harassed him into his third-worst performance of the season — 19 of 31, 181 yards and two TDs while missing six of his last nine throws. So with a chance to shake up the division race by cutting a two-game deficit in half and getting a road win in the first of two matchups this season against Indy, expect Houston to crank up the pressure on Jones. “When you’re a good defense, everybody’s playing together, everybody’s communicating well,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Of course, you have to be a fast, physical outfielder who’s flying around to the football. That’s what we have, starting with our guys up front. They’re the key to what we do.” Stroud’s status Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will return Sunday after missing three straight games recovering from a concussion. Stroud has beaten the Colts in three straight meetings and is 3-1 against Indy. Top-ranked defense Houston’s defense ranks first in the NFL by allowing 264.3 yards a game and has the league’s second-best scoring defense at 16.5 points per game. They are on track to break the franchise’s single-season record for fewest points allowed per game and have held nine of their 11 opponents to 20 points or fewer, the most in the NFL this season. It’s all by design. “All the time in practice we talk about just being relentless up front,” Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. said, referring to the Buffalo game. “I think we all did a great job of that. I don’t think it was just a one-man thing. I think the whole D-line, the whole defense did a good job of swarming and everybody getting to the ball.” Getting Taylor more involved Jonathan Taylor had only 16 carries at Kansas City, and Steichen acknowledged Monday that he probably should have given the league’s leading rusher some more carries late in last week’s game. What could it mean for this week? When Taylor previously had a light workload in a loss at Pittsburgh, he rebounded with 32 carries, 244 yards and three TDs in an overtime win over Atlanta in Berlin, Germany. The Texans will be ready. “I can’t say enough good things about him as a running back,” Ryans said. “His balance, his power, the explosiveness. You have to be able to set the edge because he can take the explosive run 50-plus yards and take it to the house. He can hit cutback lanes and make you pay. So, it’s going to take everything we have.” Dynamic group For the first time since acquiring Sauce Gardner at the trade deadline, the Colts had their three Pro Bowl cornerbacks — Gardner, Charvarius Ward and Kenny Moore II — on the field together. The Colts liked the early results after Ward was activated off injured reserve. “Having (Ward) out there — great for the team,” safety Nick Cross said. “Very sticky in man coverage, great player to have out there, someone I enjoy playing with. You can definitely tell a difference when he’s out there with Sauce, and it shows — the way we can lock receivers down.” ===== INDIANA PACERS BASKETBALL NEWS GAME REWIND: PACERS 119, WIZARDS 86 (NBA CUP) The Pacers tipped off a four-game homestand on Friday night on a high note, rolling to a 119-86 victory over the Washington Wizards (2-16) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Six players scored in double figures for Indiana (3-16), with All-Star forward Pascal Siakam leading the way with an efficient 24-point, 11-rebound double-double. Siakam went 11-for-20 from the field and logged just 26 minutes in the runaway victory. “He decided that we were not going to lose this game tonight,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said of Siakam. “He was ultra-aggressive, but within our system…He was tremendous. I thought as good as he was on offense, he was equally good and maybe better defensively and rebounding the ball.” Bennedict Mathurin added 20 points and four assists, going 8-for-16 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. T.J. McConnell chipped in 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and eight assists in just 19 minutes off the bench. Friday was the last night of Group Play in the 2025 edition of the NBA Cup. Both the Pacers and Wizards were already eliminated from advancing to the Knockout Rounds ahead of Friday’s matchup. McConnell and the second unit got the Pacers rolling early on Friday. McConnell scored six of Indiana’s 13 bench points in the opening quarter as the Blue & Gold jumped out to a 30-24 lead after the first 12 minutes. Siakam took over at the start of the ensuing frame, scoring the Pacers’ first eight points in the second quarter. The hosts stretched their lead to 46-36 following Garrison Mathews’ 3-pointer at the 8:06 mark — Mathews’ first points since joining the team on a 10-day hardship contract last week. The Wizards responded with a 12-2 run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Bub Carrington to briefly tie the game at 48. But the Pacers quickly countered with a 9-0 spurt to reassert control. They pushed the lead to 64-52 by halftime. The Pacers shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half and made 7-of-20 3-pointers. The Blue & Gold maintained a double-digit advantage for the entirety of the third quarter. Third-year forward Jarace Walker scored seven points in the frame, converting a three-point play in transition and also throwing down a reverse dunk off a dish from Jay Huff. The Pacers outscored Washington 10-4 to close the quarter and stretch the margin to 21, taking a 94-73 lead into the fourth quarter. Indiana then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to all but cement the victory. The Blue & Gold stretched the margin all the way to 33 points by the final buzzer. Huff had 12 points, six rebounds, and four blocks in the win, going 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Walker finished with 10 points and seven rebounds and Isaiah Jackson tallied 10 points off the bench. The Pacers won comfortably despite being without starting point guard Andrew Nembhard on Friday, as he missed the contest with a right quad contusion. Alex Sarr led Washington with 24 points and eight rebounds. CJ McCollum, who scored 46 points and made 10 3-pointers as the Wizards snapped a 14-game losing streak on Tuesday night against Atlanta, scored 11 and went 1-for-5 from beyond the arc on Friday. Indiana will host Chicago on Saturday on the second night of a back-to-back. They will continue the homestand on Monday against Cleveland and wrap it up on Wednesday against Denver. “We’ve got to keep building on this,” Siakam said. “I thought our energy and our effort on defense has been good the past three, four games or so. We’ve played some tough competition, we’ve lost some unfortunate games…It’s encouraging, regardless of the opponent that we have these [good] defensive games and that we can build on that.” Inside the Numbers The Wizards’ 86 points were a season low by a Pacers opponent and the fewest Indiana has allowed in a game since a 109-77 win over Chicago on Nov. 22, 2021. Siakam registered his fifth double-double of the season and his 13th 20-point game this season. He has scored 20 or more points in six of his last seven contests. McConnell has scored in double figures in five straight games off the bench. McConnell has gone 33-for-50 (66 percent) from the field over that stretch. Huff has scored in double figures in three straight and four of his last five contests. Mathews scored nine points in 21:50 in his third game as a Pacer, going 2-for-7 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. The Pacers shot 52.2 percent from the field and 13-for-34 (38.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Wizards shot 39.8 percent from the field and 7-for-32 (21.9 percent) from beyond the arc. Indiana outscored Washington 58-38 in the paint. ===== INDY FUEL HOCKEY NEWS FUEL EARN POINT IN OVERTIME BATTLE WITH FORT WAYNE FISHERS – The Fuel hosted the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday night. After a chippy, back-and-forth battle, Fort Wayne forced overtime and took a 5-4 victory after Nick Deakin-Poot scored the game winner. 1ST PERIOD Tyler Kobryn opened the scoring with a small breakaway chance early in the first period. At 3:00, he scored his first goal with the Indy Fuel. Jadon Joseph and Connor Joyce claimed the assists. At 10:34, Sahil Panwar took the game’s first penalty for high sticking to put the Fuel on the penalty kill. Despite being shorthanded, Jesse Tucker scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the Fuel at 11:35. Joseph and Tyson Feist had the assists on that goal. Just eighteen seconds later, Fort Wayne’s Blake Murray scored to make it 2-1 while still on the power play. Time expired on the period without much more activity, with the Fuel outshooting the Komets, 6-5 while leading 2-1 after one period. 2ND PERIOD Alex Aleardi tied the game up at 2-2 with a wrap-around goal at 4:03. At 5:57, Fuel captain Chris Cameron took a cross checking penalty to put Indy on the penalty kill once again. With thirteen seconds left in that penalty, Fort Wayne’s Kirill Tyutyayev took an interference penalty at 7:45. Panwar capitalized on it with a power play goal at 9:01. Matt Petgrave and Lee Lapid had the assists on that goal. At 11:01, Jesse Tucker took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after a fight broke out between both teams. James Stefan scored on the power play for the Komets to make it 3-3. Things got progressively chippier as the period went on and at 13:05, Nick Deakin-Poot and Indy’s Jadon Joseph exchanged blows and each took a roughing penalty. Deakin-Poot’s was a double minor while Joseph’s was two minutes. About three minutes later, the same thing happened between Indy’s Dustin Manz and Fort Wayne’s Dru Krebs except Fort Wayne ended up with the power play. Panwar capitalized with his second power play goal of the night. This time Jordan Martin and Lee Lapid had the assists. This put the Fuel up 4-3. At 8:46, Jordan Martin took a high sticking penalty which put the Fuel back on the penalty kill. Despite heavy pressure from the Komets, Indy killed it off. Fort Wayne’s Stefan scored his second goal of the game at 15:21 to tie it up once again, 4-4. Both teams had a few more chances before time expired in regulation and the game headed to overtime. OVERTIME On a small breakaway just 33 seconds into the overtime period, Deakin-Poot scored on the first shot of the period. Despite outshooting the Komets, 33-23, Indy fell 5-4 in overtime. ===== INDIANA FOOTBALL NEWS BUCKET STAYS IN BLOOMINGTON WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Spin moves are wonderful things when done well. Case in point — Indiana running back Kaelon Black. Exceptional speed can break your will. Hoosier running back Roman Hemby proved that. Both were on full display Friday night at Ross-Ade Stadium as second-ranked IU beat rival Purdue 56-3 to retain the Old Oaken Bucket for a second straight season. That clinched the Hoosiers’ first-ever 12-0 regular season, 9-0 in Big Ten play, the latest in a series of records under coach Curt Cignetti in his two Cream ‘n Crimson seasons. It set up a conference title game showdown next Saturday night at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium, with the College Football Playoffs to follow. “This team is a bunch of misfits across the nation and now we are 12-0,” quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. “It’s special group of guys.” And then … “This is truly special,” he added. “All of us worked all of our lives to get to this point. There’s no complacency. We have to go harder, train harder. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The only previous undefeated IU season came in 1945, when it went 9-0-1 to win the Big Ten title. This will be the Hoosiers’ first Big Ten title game appearance. “We’re a year late,” Cignetti said with a smile. “It will be a great game.” Then he offered perspective. “It’s a great job by the players and assistant coaches. I appreciate (IU President) Pam Whitten and (Athletic Director) Scott Dolson for their leadership and support. That made this possible. “There was a lot of celebration in the locker room. A lot of cigars being smoked. They’re having a good old time. They get to enjoy this for 24 hours. “It’s a great night for Indiana. It’s something a lot of people thought would never happen. It shows when you have the commitment and the plan and the right people, anything is possible.” The aftermath left veteran linebacker Aiden Fisher clutching the Oaken Bucket for a mid-field celebration with Cignetti. “This game means a lot to the team, alums and fans,” Fisher said. “It shows how good a coach Coach Cig is. I wanted to find everybody and show off a great moment. “We did what we needed to do.” Consider Black, who spun free from a Purdue tackle attempt to bolt 16 yards for a second-quarter touchdown. He totaled 66 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Hemby followed with an 82-yard second-quarter scoring run, tying the IU record for the longest run in a Bucket game. He finished with 152 yards on 12 carries. They powered a rushing attack that totaled 355 yards. The IU record for a Bucket game is 401 rushing yards set in 2013. “There’s a lot more we can accomplish,” Hemby said. “We want to keep winning. Channel that celebration to get better.” IU has outscored Purdue 122-3 over the last two seasons. “We wanted to walk out with an exclamation point and not a question mark,” Cignetti said. “We did that.” An Oaken Bucket record 24 degrees at kickoff didn’t bring snow, and didn’t faze the Hoosiers, some of whom warmed up with sleeveless t-shirts. The temperature dropped to 20 degrees at the start of the second half. Receiver Elijah Sarratt started after missing the previous two games with an injury. He finished with three catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Mendoza threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. That gives him 32 passing TDs and six rushing scores to tie the program single-season record of 38 total touchdowns set by quarterback Kellen Lewis in 2007. Defensively, the Hoosiers had 10.0 tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Stephen Daley had 4.5 of them. Linebacker Rolijah Hardy led with 10 tackles. “There’s a lot of work to be done with what lies ahead,” Cignetti said. We’re excited about the future.” Safety Amare Ferrell’s fourth interception of the season, coming 48 seconds into the game and set up by pressure from Daley, gave IU the ball at midfield, but the Hoosiers couldn’t capitalize. They did on their second possession, which included an 18-yard catch by Sarratt and a 15-yard run by Black, who finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown drive for a 7-0 lead seven minutes into the first quarter. Purdue got a 22-yard field goal just before the end of the first quarter. IU countered with a touchdown drive that included runs of 15 yards by Hemby and 10 by Black before Mendoza ended it with a 7-yard scoring run to make it 14-3. It was Mendoza’s sixth rushing touchdown of the season. Mendoza’s 20-yard run was followed by Black’s 16-yard touchdown run and then Hemby’s 82-yard TD run for a 28-3 halftime IU lead. It had 209 rushing yards, 130 by Hemby. The Hoosiers went run heavy to open the second half before Mendoza hit Sarratt with a 17-yard TD pass for a 35-3 score. IU got the ball back when Daley forced a fumble and safety Devan Boykin recovered at midfield. Mendoza followed with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr., who broke three tackles to the end zone for a 42-3 lead. Alberto Mendoza took over at quarterback and ran 50 yards to set up Khobie Martin’s 21-yard touchdown run and a 49-3 IU lead after three quarters. Alberto Mendoza hit receiver Davion Chandler with a 65-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the final 56-3 score. For 24 hours, the Hoosiers can celebrate. “It’s a good accomplishment,” Fisher said, “but it’s on to the next one. “There’s a big opportunity in front of us. The team is already talking about it. “This is a team that loves each other. Nobody wants to let each other down. We just want to win. We know we have something special and can take this thing pretty far.” ===== INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS INDIANA BASKETBALL GAME NOTES – GAME 7 VS. A strong start for the Irish Friday afternoon gave them the 1-0 lead early in the first frame as Danny Nelson’s powerplay tally was the difference maker heading into the first intermission. The Eagles were called for a hold at 2:10 of the opening period and the visitors were granted their first powerplay opportunity of the night. The junior forward, and co-captain, Danny picked up the rebound at 3:23 to give the Irish the lead and mark his third consecutive game with a powerplay goal. Notre Dame held the one-goal lead through the remainder of the first period despite being called for a pair of penalties late in the frame. Sutter Muzzatti nearly had the Irish up by two at 1:24 of the second stanza but a video review confirmed the puck never fully crossed the goal line and play resumed with the 1-0 tally. BC evened the score at 7:04 of the second period when a shot from the point made it through traffic and beat Nicholas Kempf in the crease. Evan Werner got the Irish back on top when he tapped the puck behind BC’s netminder, Louka Cloutier, at the 11:46 mark of the second period but BC would find the equalizer just 54 seconds later to knot it up 2-2. The Eagles took the lead late in the frame after a collision in the crease knocked Kempf on his back and unable to reposition before the puck was shot but a coaches challenge by the Irish for goaltender interference was unsuccessful after a lengthy deliberation by the officials. BC would net one more before the end of the frame as the Irish trailed 4-2 heading into the final period of regulation. Paul Fischer drew the Irish within a goal just 2:27 into the final frame when his shot from the point sailed top shelf, clipping a defender in front of the net and deflecting past the BC netminder. The Eagles reclaimed their two-goal lead with 12:37 to play in regulation after a race up ice beat the Irish defensemen and fire a shot over the shoulder of Kempf to make it a 5-3 game. A pair of off-setting penalties at 8:47 of the contest made it four-on-four hockey for two minutes but neither side could capitalize on the extra ice chance and the action returned to five-on-five with less than 10 minutes to play. BC was whistled for interference at 13:02 and the Irish powerplay unit saw their third chance of the night while looking to overcome the two-goal deficit. The Irish failed to capitalize on the late powerplay opportunity and continued to trail the Eagles 5-3 at the final media timeout of the day. The Irish pulled Kempf with three minutes to play in regulation as the extra attacker hopped over the boards looking to attack in the Irish zone but the netminder returned after play transitioned into the Irish end before being deflected out of play for a defensive-zone draw. The sophomore returned the bench with 1:11 to play in the contest as the Irish opted once more for the sixth skater. The score went final at 5-3 to conclude the team’s road slate for the 2025 calendar year. UP NEXT The Irish close out the first half of the season next weekend when No. 2/2 Wisconsin pays a visit to Compton Family Ice Arena, Dec. 5-6. If the national rankings hold, it will be the third-straight top-2 team the Irish have hosted, dating back to the Big Ten Conference opener Oct. 31-Nov. 1 against then-second ranked Michigan. ===== BUTLER MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS BULLDOGS ERUPT IN SECOND HALF OF 94-69 WIN OVER WRIGHT STATE A 65-point second half gave Butler a 94-69 win over Wright State Friday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Tipoff is at Noon CT from Truist Arena in Highland Heights, Kentucky. Sunday’s game can be seen with a subscription to ESPN+ and heard on The Spin 95.7 FM. Sunday’s game is only USI’s (4-1) second road game of the season. Four of the first five games for the Eagles have come at home, going 3-1 in the process. USI won its first road game of the season, 68-52, at Saint Louis University back on November 12, which was the start of USI’s current three-game winning streak. Last time out, USI won in dominating fashion at home last Tuesday against Fisk University, 95-18, nearly setting a program record for the fewest points allowed in a game. The record is 17 points allowed, which USI set in a 45-17 win against Kentucky Wesleyan College in December of 1976. Instead, the Eagles tied for the second-fewest points surrendered in a game in USI history, which was previously a 113-18 win against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in January 1979. Not only did USI showcase its stingy defense in the 95-18 home win against Fisk last Tuesday, but the Screaming Eagles also owned the glass. USI pulled down 55 rebounds in the contest. The 55 rebounds were the most for USI in a game since the 2017-18 season, when the Screaming Eagles had 59 rebounds against Harris-Stowe State University. Offensively, against Fisk, USI made 40 field goals in a game for the first time since November 2016, when USI made 44 shots against Hannibal-LaGrange University. As a team, USI is averaging 82.4 points while limiting the opposition to a D-I best 45.2 points per game. After a slow start to the season, Northern Kentucky (2-6) has two wins in its last four games. Last time out, the Norse claimed a 90-69 victory against Drake University in a multi-team event down in Nashville, Tennessee. Northern Kentucky’s other win came in their only home game so far this season, a 70-61 victory over the University of Toledo on November 19. Freshman guard Karina Bystry, who led the Norse with 17 points against Drake, tops the squad this season at 10.8 points per game as the only player on the team averaging double digits. Collectively, Northern Kentucky averages nearly 65 points per game while giving up 76 points per game. USI and Northern Kentucky add another chapter to their long rivalry, which dates to when both programs were in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at the Division II level. The Norse lead the all-time series, 38-20, but the Screaming Eagles won last year’s matchup at USI that renewed the old rivalry, 75-73. Sunday’s game is the start of a two-game road stretch for the Screaming Eagles over the course of the next week. ===== VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS MEN’S BASKETBALL TO HOST WESTERN MICHIGAN IN POST-THANKSGIVING MATCHUP Valparaiso (4-2, 0-0 MVC) vs. Western Michigan (3-4, 0-0 MAC) Game No. 7 – Saturday, Nov. 29, 2 p.m. CT Athletics-Recreation Center (5,000) – Valparaiso, Ind. Chaney accounted for Valpo’s 15th and 16th MVC Freshman of the Week award since head coach Roger Powell Jr. arrived at Valpo prior to the start of the 2023-24 season. Valpo has accounted for 16 of the 39 total MVC Freshman of the Week awards since the honor began in 2023-24. The Beacons lead the league by a wide margin, over twice as many Freshman of the Week honors as Evansville, which has the second most with seven. Taming Turnovers Valpo has committed single-figure turnovers in four straight games. After 14 turnovers in the opener, Valpo has limited the turnovers to 10 or fewer in five straight. The seven turnovers against Bryant (Nov. 16) marked Valpo’s fewest since also committing just seven in the MVC semifinal vs. Bradley last season. The Beacons are averaging 9.7 turnovers per game, which puts them third in the MVC and 29th nationally in that category. 20-Point Trio In the Nov. 19 game at Cleveland State, three Valpo players eclipsed 20 points – Rakim Chaney with 23, Shon Tupuola with 21 and Justus McNair with 21. That marked the first time three Valpo players all finished with 20+ points since All Wright (25), Cooper Schwieger (23) and Tyler Schmidt (23) on Jan. 8 of last season vs. Indiana State in overtime. It has now happened in back-to-back years after not having occurred since Nov. 29, 2013 vs. Mercer – Lavonte Dority (31), Bobby Capobianco (23) and Alec Peters (22) in a game that went triple overtime. The game at Cleveland State provided Valpo’s first with three 20-point scorers in a regulation affair since March 7, 1993 – Casey Schmidt (26), David Redmon (24), Tracy Gipson (23) in an 83-75 conference-tournament win over Northern Illinois. Road Rout The 15-point margin of victory on Nov. 19 at Cleveland State marked Valpo’s most lopsided road win since a 20-point triumph on Jan. 21, 2023 at Illinois State. The 90 points against the Vikings were Valpo’s most on the road since Nov. 15, 2017, a 94-69 win at SIUE. Valpo joined Kent State (Nov. 23, 2024, W 68-52) as the only two teams in the last five years to win by 15 points or more at Cleveland State. Valpo became the first visiting team to score 90 points or more in a regulation game at Cleveland State since Florida International (107) on Nov. 19, 2019. Off the Chain Rakim Chaney continued his string of big games on Nov. 19 at Cleveland State, becoming the first Valpo player with a 23-point, seven-assist game since Ron Howard had 25 and seven on Jan. 27, 2005 at Southern Utah. Chaney became the second freshman in the country with a 23-point, seven-assist game this season, joining NJIT’s David Bolden. The game at Cleveland State was Chaney’s fifth straight in double figures and fourth straight with 15 or more. Chaney turned in an 18-point, eight-rebound game on Nov. 16 vs. Bryant. He became only the fifth Valpo freshman since 2010 with 18 or more points and eight or more rebounds in a game, joining Cooper Schwieger, Sheldon Edwards, Alec Peters (three times) and Ryan Broekhoff. Chaney shot 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3 against Bryant, his second straight game with four made triples. This was the first time a Valpo freshman had at least 18 points, eight rebounds and four made 3s in a game since Alec Peters in 2013. Chaney had 24 points, six rebounds and three assists while grabbing two steals on Nov. 12 vs. Nicholls. He went 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3. He became the first Valpo player with a 24-point, six-rebound game that included eight made field goals and four made 3s since Quinton Green on Feb. 11, 2023 vs. Illinois State. If you toss in the three assists and two steals, Chaney was the first Valpo player since Tevonn Walker on Jan. 10, 2018 vs. Drake to post that stat line. Chaney became the first Valpo freshman to make eight shots and four 3s as part of a game that featured at least 24 points and at least six rebounds since Alec Peters on Dec. 14, 2013 vs. Loyola Marymount. Chaney became the second freshman nationally with a 24-point, six-rebound game featuring eight made field goals and four made 3s this season, joining Duke’s Cameron Boozer (Nov. 8 vs. Western Carolina). Other Notes Wrapping Up Nov. 19 – Valpo 90, Cleveland State 75 Justus McNair’s 21 points outdid his previous scoring career high of 19 (Jan. 14, 2025 at Belmont). He also rewrote his previous rebounding career high of five (Jan. 11, 2025 at Murray State) thanks to a six-rebound performance. Shon Tupuola enjoyed a 21-point outburst on 8-of-10 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds. His 21 points marked his Valpo peak while he also recorded a season-best three blocks. This marked his third-straight double-figure scoring effort. In the last 15 seasons, Tupuola joined Cooper Schwieger (three times), Kobe King and Ryan Broekhoeff as the only Valpo players with 21-point, seven-rebound, three-block games. Tupuola became just the eighth player nationally this season with 21 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a game while shooting at least 80 percent. Carter Hopoi squeezed seven rebounds to share the team lead with Tupuola. That marked the freshman’s personal best, outdoing his six from the season opener vs. Eastern Illinois. The Beacons blocked seven shots as a team, the squad’s most in a game since Jan. 11, 2025 at Murray State, also seven. Valpo held a 39-23 rebounding advantage and a 13-5 edge on the offensive glass. Valpo made seven 3s, its fifth straight game making exactly seven or exactly eight triples. Who is Next? A trio of incoming freshmen have signed to continue their basketball careers at Valpo during the November early signing period. 6-foot-4 guard Justin Curry II (Noblesville, Ind.), 6-foot-7 forward Hudson Scroggins (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and 6-foot-1 point guard Rajan Roberts will join the program next year. Curry averaged 15.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game as a junior at Noblesville last season. He is a reigning Indiana Junior All-Star. Scroggins was a 1,000-point scorer in the high school ranks at Lake Forest (Ill.) and is spending this year at a prep school, Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. Roberts is a highly-rated prospect from Chicago and was considered one of the top available point guards on the west coast at the time of his commitment. He is among the highest-rated recruits in Valpo history, according to 247Sports. His high school stops include a year each at Proviso West, Kenwood, Prolific Prep (Miami, Fla.) and AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.). Growth Spurt Valpo’s roster has gotten noticeably larger in terms of height this season, as the squad boasts its highest average height of the Roger Powell Jr. head coaching era. The Beacons have seven players on the roster listed at 6-foot-8 or taller – Jayden Watson (6-8), JT Pettigrew (6-8), Owen Dease (6-8), Tucker Tornatta (6-8), Kobe Walker (6-9), Shon Tupuola (6-10) and Carter Hopoi (6-11). This marks the first time during the program’s long Division-I history that the team has had seven players listed at 6-foot-8 or taller. The 1999-00, 2000-01, 2013-14 and 2022-23 teams each had six players listed at 6-8 or taller. One of Four Only four programs in the nation have had their league’s Freshman of the Year in each of the last two seasons – UConn, Baylor, Valpo and Harvard. All Wright was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2024-2025, becoming the second straight Valpo player to earn the award after Cooper Schwieger did so in 2023-24. This marked just the third time since the award began in 1986 that a school has had back-to-back MVC Freshmen of the Year. Wichita State’s Markis McDuffie (2016) and Landry Shamet (2017) were the most recent duo to go back-to-back. Before that, it was Southern Illinois’ Tony Harvey (1989) and Ashraf Amaya (1990). Wright became just the fifth Valpo freshman to win a league Newcomer/Freshman of the Year Award, joining Schwieger (2023-24), Lubos Barton (1998-99), Bryce Drew (1994-95) and Lance Barker (1991-92). A Look at the Schedule The 11-game nonconference slate will feature seven home dates and four road contests. Valpo will play at Preseason AP No. 9 Kentucky, a Sweet 16 team from last season, on Nov. 7. Nicholls, the Nov. 12 opponent, was a 20-win team last season. Bryant, which will be at the ARC on Nov. 16, went 14-2 in the American East and totaled 23 wins on the way to a conference tournament crown and NCAA Tournament appearance last season. Cleveland State, which will host Valpo on Nov. 19, went 23-13 overall last year en route to an appearance in the Purple College Basketball Invitational. Big East foe Marquette, the Dec. 2 opponent in Milwaukee, reached the NCAA Tournament and accrued 23 wins last season. UNC Wilmington, the Dec. 13 opponent at the ARC, won the Coastal Athletic Association championship and totaled 27 wins on the way to an NCAA Tournament berth last season. The nonconference portion of the season concludes on Dec. 16 at Big Ten adversary Northwestern. Valpo has three road nonconference games against teams in the top 60 in the KenPom preseason ratings, including Kentucky, rated No. 4 by KenPom. ===== VALPO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT CLEVELAND STATE FRIDAY The Valpo women’s basketball team continued action at the CSU Invitational on Friday afternoon, falling to host Cleveland State by an 80-41 final. How It Happened The defense started strong, getting stops on four of CSU’s first five possessions, and baskets from Milana Nenadic (Kitchener, Ontario/Cameron Heights [Idaho State/Maine]) and Kamryn Winch (Bonne Terre, Mo./North County [Maryville]) gave the Beacons a 4-2 lead two and a half minutes into the contest. Valpo went scoreless for the next four-plus minutes as the Vikings went on a 12-0 run to pull out to a double-figure lead. A bucket from Nenadic with 2:54 to play in the period looked to slow CSU’s momentum, but the hosts went on another 9-2 spurt to close the opening quarter with a 23-8 lead. Fiona Connolly (South Burlington, Vt./Brewster Academy [La Salle]) connected on a 3-pointer on Valpo’s first possession of the second quarter, but the Beacons scored just twice more in the period as CSU led 44-15 at halftime. Valpo started the second half on a 7-0 run, as Connolly sandwiched another triple and a layup around a Nenadic second-chance basket. The Vikings responded with nine in a row, however, to prevent the Beacons from cutting any further into the lead. CSU’s lead was 65-28 at the end of the third quarter. Inside the Game Friday’s game came against a Cleveland State program which won 27 games and advanced to the Fab 4 of the WNIT last season. Connolly tied for game-high honors with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. It is the third straight game in double figures for the senior, who has scored 10 or more five times this year. Winch grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, leading the way as Valpo out-rebounded CSU by a 41-37 margin. It marks the first time Valpo has won the rebounding battle in consecutive games since doing so versus Evansville and Bradley in February 2024. The Beacons shot just 30.8% from the floor and were just 4-of-23 from 3-point range, while the Vikings hit at a 47.5% clip and were 7-of-20 from deep. Valpo committed 33 turnovers, 24 of which were CSU steals. The Vikings scored 45 points off of turnovers. Valpo utilized its third different starting lineup of the season Friday, as Nenadic and Winch started alongside Connolly, Mor Shabtai (Tel Aviv, Israel/Tichonet) and Mikayla Huffine (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran [Quincy/Iowa Western C.C.). Next Up Valpo (0-7) closes play at the CSU Invitational on Saturday afternoon, taking on St. Bonaventure at noon CT. The game will be streamed live on the CSU Athletics YouTube page. ===== SMALL INDIANA COLLEGE SPORTS WEB SITES UINDY ATHLETICS: https://athletics.uindy.edu/ MARIAN ATHLETICS: https://muknights.com/ INDIANA WESLEYAN ATHLETICS: https://iwuwildcats.com/ EARLHAM ATHLETICS: https://goearlham.com/ WABASH ATHLETICS: https://sports.wabash.edu/ FRANKLIN ATHLETICS: https://franklingrizzlies.com/ ROSE-HULMAN ATHLETICS: https://athletics.rose-hulman.edu/ ANDERSON ATHLETICS: https://athletics.anderson.edu/landing/index TRINE ATHLETICS: https://trinethunder.com/landing/index BETHEL ATHLETICS: https://bupilots.com/ DEPAUW ATHLETICS: https://depauwtigers.com/ HANOVER ATHLETICS: https://athletics.hanover.edu/ MANCHESTER ATHLETICS: https://muspartans.com/ HUNTINGTON ATHLETICS: https://www.huathletics.com/ OAKLAND CITY ATHLETICS: https://gomightyoaks.com/index.aspx ST.
