Dante Moore tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Gary Bryant Jr. in the second overtime and Dillon Thieneman recorded a game-ending interception as No. 6 Oregon produced a 30-24 victory over No. 3 Penn State on Saturday night in Big Ten play at University Park, Pa.

Moore completed 29 of 39 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns as the Ducks (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) notched a big victory in front of 111,015 fans during Penn State’s famed annual “White Out” game.

Drew Allar was 14-of-25 passing for 137 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Penn State (3-1, 0-1). Devonte Ross was credited with two touchdown receptions for the Nittany Lions.

Oregon blew a 14-point, fourth-quarter lead and fell behind 24-17 when Kaytron Allen scored on a 4-yard run in the first overtime session. The Ducks tied the score on Moore’s 2-yard shovel pass to Jamari Johnson.

Washington led Ohio State 3-0 before the Buckeyes took a 7-3 halftime lead thanks to an 18-yard TD catch by Jeremiah Smith with 1:08 remaining. A Donaldson 1-yard run extended Ohio State’s lead to 14-3 midway through the third quarter before Grady Gross kicked his second 28-yard field goal to make it 14-6.

Georgia (3-1, 1-1) was anchored by 119 rushing yards from Chauncey Bowens. It cut the deficit to three points with a pair of rushing touchdowns by Bowens and Josh McCray, but the Bulldogs’ final three possessions ended on two punts and a turnover on downs.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

MLB ROUNDUP: GUARDIANS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT ON WALK-OFF HBP

C.J. Kayfus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, scoring Petey Halpin as the Cleveland Guardians clinched an American League playoff berth with a 3-2 win over the visiting Texas Rangers on Saturday.

Rangers closer Robert Garcia (4-8) intentionally walked Gabriel Arias to face rookie Kayfus with two outs in the ninth, but he struck him on the right arm with his second pitch. Halpin was pinch-running for Johnathan Rodriguez, who had walked, and Kyle Manzardo followed with a single.

Cleveland locked up a wild-card spot but is also tied with the Detroit Tigers for first place in the Central Division. The Guardians would win a tiebreaker and the teams are assured of playing each other in the first round of the postseason.

Cade Smith (8-5) worked 1 2/3 innings and was the winner. Texas needs one victory to ensure it will finish with a winning record.

Tigers 2, Red Sox 1

Jahmai Jones went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning, leading Detroit to a 2-1, postseason-clinching win over host Boston.

The leadoff-hitting designated hitter has been a spark for the Tigers this week, going 7-for-15 with five RBI across his last six games. Keider Montero, who was not announced as the starting pitcher before the series, struck out seven across 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

Nick Sogard had the lone RBI and was one of seven different players to record a hit for the Red Sox, who will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the AL playoffs depending on whether they win or lose to Detroit on Sunday.

Yankees 6, Orioles 1

Aaron Judge hit his 53rd homer and drove in three runs as the Yankees rolled to a victory over the visiting Orioles and a share of first place in the AL East.

After Judge’s latest homer, Giancarlo Stanton and Ryan McMahon added solo shots in the second. Including the postseason, it was the 59th time Judge and Stanton homered in the same game, and the Yankees are 52-7 in those games.

Baltimore starter Tomoyuki Sugano (10-10) allowed four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. For New York, rookie Cam Schlittler pitched seven stellar innings, surrendering just two hits and zero runs.

Reds 7, Brewers 4

Andrew Abbott pitched effectively into the sixth inning and visiting Cincinnati turned mistakes into a big inning en route to a victory over Milwaukee, positioning the Reds to grab the final National League wild-card spot.

Cincinnati remained tied for the last NL postseason berth with the Mets. The Reds hold the tiebreaker over the Mets heading into the last day of the regular season. Abbott (10-7) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Emilio Pagan pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 38 chances.

The Brewers, who won the NL Central last weekend, clinched the No. 1 overall seed and home-field advantage throughout the postseason over Philadelphia. Milwaukee, which has lost five of its last six games, holds the tiebreaker over the Phillies. Robert Gasser (0-2), making his second big league start since coming back from Tommy John surgery, allowed four runs (all unearned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Royals 4, Athletics 2

Michael Wacha threw six scoreless innings to help visiting Kansas City to a win over the Athletics in Sacramento, Calif.

Wacha (10-13) had lost his last two starts and four of five but limited the A’s to two hits while striking out five and walking three. Mike Yastrzemski had two hits and scored twice, Bobby Witt Jr. delivered two hits and an RBI and Vinnie Pasquantino contributed one hit and two RBIs for the Royals, who will try to win their third straight series and finish the season over .500 on Sunday.

A’s starter Luis Morales (4-3) surrendered three runs (two earned) and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked two. Shea Langeliers had three hits and an RBI for the A’s.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 3

Michael Busch homered twice, tripled, doubled and drove in four runs to help Chicago clinch home-field advantage for their National League wild-card series with a win over visiting St. Louis.

Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong also homered for the Cubs, who will open the playoffs against the Padres next Tuesday. Jameson Taillon (11-7) allowed one run and three hits and two walks over six innings, striking out eight. Needing just a single to hit for the cycle when he came up with two outs in the eighth inning, Busch was intentionally walked with a runner on third base.

Cardinals rookie right-hander Michael McGreevy (8-4) went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. Nolan Arenado and Jordan Walker homered for the Cardinals, who have lost three in a row.

Blue Jays 5, Rays 1

Trey Yesavage pitched five scoreless innings for his first major league win and Alejandro Kirk homered as Toronto defeated visiting Tampa Bay.

Yesavage (1-0), making his third major league start and his first at home, allowed five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings. Ernie Clement started the scoring with a two-run double in the second to help the Blue Jays win their third straight and remain tied for first in the AL East with the Yankees. Toronto could clinch the division with a win or a Yankees loss on Sunday.

Jonathan Aranda hit a solo home run for the Rays, who have lost three in a row. Junior Caminero had two infield hits and a walk. Joe Boyle (1-4) was done after five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five.

Mets 5, Marlins 0

Clay Holmes pitched six scoreless innings and Pete Alonso homered and drove in two runs as New York remained in playoff contention, defeating host Miami.

In the battle for the final National League wild-card berth, New York is tied with the Cincinnati Reds, who defeated the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds hold the tiebreaker, so for the Mets to reach the playoffs, they must win Sunday and have the Reds lose to the Brewers.

Holmes (12-8), a converted reliever, allowed just one hit and three walks. The Mets also got nearly perfect relief pitching from Brooks Raley, Tyler Rogers and Edwin Diaz as Miami was held to just one hit all game. Eury Perez (7-6) took the loss despite striking out a career-high 11. He allowed three hits, three walks and three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Astros 6, Angels 1

Christian Walker hit a pair of solo home runs to help visiting Houston, which was eliminated from postseason contention, post a victory over Los Angeles.

Despite the win, the Cleveland Guardians’ victory over the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers’ triumph over the Boston Red Sox confirmed the American League’s wild-card teams, leaving the Astros out of the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Zach Cole and Jesus Sanchez also homered and drove in two for Houston. J.P. France (1-0) allowed one run on two hits in three innings of relief Caden Dana (0-4) threw seven innings for Los Angeles, surrendering five runs on five hits. Jo Adell’s RBI double in the sixth accounted for all of the offense for Los Angeles, which will miss the postseason for the 11th straight year.

Giants 4, Rockies 3

Casey Schmitt smacked a three-run homer, and Justin Verlander won what could be his final game in San Francisco, which held on for a victory over visiting Colorado.

In an early 2-0 hole, the Giants seized the upper hand for good with Schmitt’s homer in the bottom of the second, his 12th of the year. Verlander (4-11) won for the fourth time in his last seven decisions after an 0-8 start, and Spencer Bivens got two clutch outs for his second save after the Rockies made it a one-run game in the ninth.

Colorado took its early lead on homers from Hunter Goodman, his 31st in the first inning, and Brenton Doyle, his 15th in the second. Kyle Freeland (5-17) allowed three runs on three hits over six innings, taking over the major league lead in losses.

Twins 5, Phillies 0

Rookie Mick Abel pitched six scoreless innings against his former team, lifting Minnesota to a road victory over Philadelphia. Byron Buxton, James Outman and Ryan Fitzgerald homered for the Twins.

A 24-year-old right-hander, Abel (3-4) was a key piece of the July trade that sent star closer Jhoan Duran to the Phillies. He has mostly struggled since joining Minnesota but authored the best outing of his Twins tenure in this one, allowing three hits — all singles — and a walk while striking out nine.

Philadelphia starter Ranger Suarez (12-8) gave up three runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings before leaving with a thigh contusion after getting hit by a comebacker to the mound. Alec Bohm had two of the Phillies’ seven hits.

Nationals 6, White Sox 5

James Wood’s solo homer capped a three-run seventh inning, and the Nationals rallied for a win against the visiting White Sox.

Julian Fernandez (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first major league win, and Jose A. Ferrer worked the ninth for his 11th save, allowing a run before striking out Chase Meidroth with the tying run on third to end it.

Colson Montgomery and Brooks Baldwin each hit two-run home runs for Chicago, which has lost six of seven. Montgomery finished a triple short of the cycle.

Pirates 3, Braves 1

Rookie Bubba Chandler recorded another strong start, and Henry Davis hit a home run to help visiting Pittsburgh beat Atlanta in the second game of their three-game series.

Chandler (4-1), the Pirates’ third-round draft choice in 2021, was born and raised in Georgia and was facing the Braves for the first time. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts. In his final three starts, Chandler allowed two runs in 16 2/3 combined innings, a 1.08 ERA.

Davis tied the game in the third inning with a 425-foot solo homer to left-center field, his seventh. Atlanta starter Spencer Strider (7-14) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out five.

Dodgers 5, Mariners 3

Enrique Hernandez’s two-run double with one out in the ninth inning broke a tie as Los Angeles defeated host Seattle in a matchup of playoff teams.

Dalton Rushing homered for the National League West champion Dodgers, who won their fourth consecutive game. Left-hander Alex Vesia (4-2) struck out the side in the eighth to earn the victory, and Edgardo Henriquez worked the ninth for his first save of the season.

Jorge Polanco went deep for the American League West champion Mariners, who lost their second in a row following a 17-1 stretch. Mariners closer Andres Munoz (3-3) walked the first two batters in the ninth, Michael Conforto and Alex Call, before Miguel Rojas hit a soft grounder to first base to advance both runners. Hernandez then lined a ball that one-hopped off the wall in the left field corner to score both runners.

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1

Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Elias Diaz all homered as San Diego eased to a win over visiting Arizona.

Playing a few hours after the Chicago Cubs clinched home-field advantage for their National League wild-card series starting on Tuesday, the Padres used the game as the first of two tune-ups for postseason play. Starting pitcher Michael King was pulled after 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while fanning three. Yuki Matsui (3-1), the first of five relievers, worked 2 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Eduardo Rodriguez (9-9) allowed five runs on six hits in six innings for the Diamondbacks. Arizona, eliminated from playoff contention during Friday night’s 7-4 loss to the Padres, rested key players such as All-Stars Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER MAKES RYDER CUP HISTORY WITH 0-4 START

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler earned a dubious distinction when he and Bryson DeChambeau lost 3 and 2 to Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose in Saturday afternoon fourballs at the Ryder Cup.

Scheffler became the first player in modern Ryder Cup history (since 1979) to play in the first four sessions of the competition and lose all four.

When a player starts poorly at a Ryder Cup, teams will often sit him for a session on Saturday, hoping for a reset. That was never an option for Scheffler, whose dominance of the sport since 2022 — 19 PGA Tour wins, with four major championships and two Players Championships — has prompted comparisons to Tiger Woods at his peak.

But also like Woods, Scheffler has been beatable in team play. He is now 0-6-2 across the past two Ryder Cups and 2-6-3 overall.

United States captain Keegan Bradley said Friday that there was no reason to panic about Scheffler’s performance. He lost 5 and 3 in foursomes while paired with Russell Henley and 3 and 2 in fourball alongside J.J. Spaun.

Still, the Scheffler drought was a big reason why the Europeans hold a huge 11 1/2-4 1/2 lead over the United States.

While some pointed to Scheffler’s partners as the culprit, Scheffler has had more than his share of miscues.

Paired with Henley again for Saturday morning foursomes, Scheffler missed the green at No. 2 from 110 yards away. “Come on, Scottie, get it together!” a young woman called out after Europe’s Robert MacIntyre birdied to take an early lead in the match.

At No. 18, MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland led 1 up but the U.S. could still salvage half a point by winning the hole and tying the match. Scheffler sprayed his approach far right into a native area, and some U.S. fans booed.

Bradley paired Scheffler with his other star player, DeChambeau, in the afternoon perhaps looking for a spark. Although Scheffler started the round with a pair of birdies, they didn’t win the U.S. any holes as Rose caught fire and birdied six of the first eight.

Scheffler drove into the trees at No. 7 and came up short with his second shot, giving himself a very awkward stance near the side of a bunker. The ensuing chip rolled 20 feet away from the hole.

By the end of a testy match that saw DeChambeau get in a shouting match with Fleetwood, Scheffler had not won a single hole.

“Bryson and I did some good stuff out there. We were into a tough matchup today,” Scheffler told a pool reporter. “Those guys played great. They made a ton of putts and really tip of a cap to them. They played better than we did.”

TEMPERS HIGH AT RYDER CUP AS EUROPE WHIPS U.S. FOR 7-POINT LEAD

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Team Europe is all but assured to win the 45th Ryder Cup after Saturday’s one-sided performance at Bethpage Black, leaving more spotlight on the home fans’ interactions with Rory McIlroy.

Captain Luke Donald and the Europeans hold a commanding 11 1/2-4 1/2 lead over the United States team ahead of Sunday’s 12 singles matches. They need 2 1/2 points from those matches to retain the Cup and three points to win outright.

Earlier Saturday, Europe became the first team in Ryder Cup history to win the first three sessions as the visitors when it took morning foursomes 3-1. McIlroy and company made it four straight sessions with a 3-1 edge in the afternoon fourball.

Outplayed and outmaneuvered all weekend, Keegan Bradley and the Americans would need to make history to pull off the comeback. The largest Saturday margin overcome in Ryder Cup history was 10-6 — by the U.S. in 1999, and by Europe in 2012.

McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry of Ireland defeated Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, 2 up, in the face of constant jeers that prompted extra security guards and around 10 state troopers to join the match at the turn.

The home crowd chanted “(Expletive) you, Rory” at the first tee and elsewhere on the course. Another popular chant was “U.S. Open, U.S. Open,” a reference to McIlroy squandering leads there in 2023 and 2024.

McIlroy at one point yelled at fans to “shut the (expletive) up” when fans heckled while he was addressing his ball. At the ninth green and multiple other points of the match, Thomas signaled to the U.S. fans to be quiet for McIlroy.

Word trickled out to the fans on social media that their heckling was becoming the focus of the day. “Don’t say anything naughty about Rory,” one American fan said sarcastically.

McIlroy released some emotion with a yell at the par-3 14th, where he rolled in his first birdie of the afternoon to put Europe 1 up.

At the par-3 17th, Thomas spun his tee shot to 13 inches of the cup and Europe conceded the birdie. McIlroy was loudly heckled up to the moment he hit his birdie try, which slid past. But Lowry sank his birdie to halve the hole, and the pair of friends finished the job at No. 18.

“Look, when you play an away Ryder Cup, it’s really, really challenging,” McIlroy said. “It’s not for me to say. You know, people can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through.”

It also got feisty in the second match, in which Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose prevailed 3 and 2 over the Americans’ stars, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.

Fleetwood and DeChambeau got in a shouting match as they walked to the 16th tee, with Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott also involved.

“I was waiting to putt,” Rose said. “The (Americans) were obviously working on their read … so I sort of waited a few seconds and then I felt like they came up again and I was sort of — I questioned whether — I was like, ‘It’s my putt, right?’ Or however I said it.

“Maybe I didn’t say it as politely as I could have said it in the moment, but by no means was there any disrespect or anything like that, but obviously it was taken the wrong way.”

World No. 1 Scheffler has had a nightmare week, becoming the first player since the Ryder Cup format changed in 1979 to go 0-4 in the opening four sessions of the event.

J.J. Spaun prevented a shutout when he birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to turn a 1-down deficit into a 1-up win alongside Xander Schauffele over Spaniard Jon Rahm and Austrian Sepp Straka.

The last match also arrived at No. 18 all square, and Englishmen Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton hit identical approaches within 3 feet of the cup, Hatton’s ball kissing Fitzpatrick’s. Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns couldn’t make birdie, handing Europe a 1-up victory.

Hatton was a late substitute for Norway’s Viktor Hovland, who aggravated a neck injury during morning foursomes and may be questionable to play Sunday.

LYNX COACH CHERYL REEVE SUSPENDED ONE GAME FOR TIRADE AT OFFICIALS

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has been suspended one game and fined for her conduct during and after Friday’s 84-76 loss to the host Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of their WNBA semifinals series, the league announced Saturday.

Minnesota assistant coaches Eric Thibault and Rebekkah Brunson were also fined for separate infractions.

The punishment stems from Reeve’s late-game outburst following a pivotal no-call involving Lynx star Napheesa Collier in the final minute. Reeve pursued and berated a game official on the court, was slow to leave after her ejection with 21.8 seconds remaining, directed profanity toward fans while exiting and later launched into a blistering critique of the league’s officiating in her postgame press conference.

“For the leadership to deem those three people semifinals playoff worthy is (expletive) malpractice,” she said of the officiating crew.

Video from courtside circulated on social media showing Reeve shouting obscenities at fans as she was escorted off the floor, while the National Basketball Referees Association publicly defended the no-call on the decisive play. Collier left the game with a leg injury, which Reeve suggested could be a fracture.

Reeve, a four-time WNBA champion and one of the league’s most accomplished coaches, will serve her suspension Sunday when the Lynx face the Mercury in Phoenix for Game 4. The series stands at 2-1 in favor of Phoenix.

ACES OUT TO ‘TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS’ IN GAME 4 VS. FEVER

The Las Vegas Aces are one victory away from returning to the WNBA Finals after a one-year absence.

The second-seeded Aces are seeking their fourth WNBA Finals trip in six seasons as they hold a 2-1 lead on the sixth-seeded Indiana Fever going into Game 4 of their best-of-five semifinals series Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis.

Las Vegas won WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023 before losing in the semifinals last season to the eventual champion New York Liberty.

“We just have to get the job done Sunday,” guard Jackie Young said after Las Vegas’ 84-72 victory in Game 3 at Indianapolis on Friday. “The job’s not finished yet.”

Young helped the Aces get the job done in Game 3 despite a sub-par performance from four-time MVP A’ja Wilson, who shot 6 of 20 from the floor while missing 11 straight attempts during one stretch. WIlson finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Young led the way with 25 points, while NaLyssa Smith scored 16, Chelsea Gray had 15 and Dana Evans 10 off the bench. Gray had six assists. Las Vegas also held Indiana to 35.6-percent shooting from the floor.

“We know how important defense is for us,” Smith said. “Defense is like our core focus. When our defense is on, our offense is 10 times better.”

Las Vegas’ defense was at its best in the fourth quarter. The Aces held a 59-56 lead after three quarters then pulled away in the fourth when Indiana managed just three free throws to open the final period until Lexie Hull made a layup with 2:25 remaining.

The Hull basket merely cut Las Vegas’ lead to 71-61 and Wilson made the Aces’ next two baskets for a 75-63 lead with 1:38 on the clock to effectively secure the victory.

The Fever has played the postseason without All-Star Caitlin Clark and three other guards lost to season-ending injuries.

“I thought we got a lot of good shots, but didn’t make a lot of them,” Indiana coach Stephanie White said. “We missed some opportunities at the free-throw line and then got a little stagnant.”

Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 21 points but went 3 of 11 from 3-point range as Indiana shot 30.4 percent from distance as a team. Indiana also shot 61.9 percent on free throws.

“At the end of the day, I felt like (Game 3) was about our shot making,” White said

Indiana did have a 16-4 edge in offensive rebounds, but that came off 47 missed shots.

“We’re not looking for a Game 5,” Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon said. “We want to come in, take care of business.”

COLTS ELEVATE CB MIKE HILTON, G JOSH SILLS TO ACTIVE ROSTER FROM PRACTICE SQUAD FOR WEEK 4

Indianapolis – The Indianapolis Colts today elevated cornerback Mike Hilton and guard Josh Sills to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Hilton, 5-9, 184 pounds, was signed to the team’s practice squad on September 23, 2025. He has played in 123 career games (56 starts) in his time with the Miami Dolphins (2025), Cincinnati Bengals (2021-24), Pittsburgh Steelers (2016-20), New England Patriots (2016) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2016). Hilton has totaled 506 tackles (386 solo), 66.0 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, 56 passes defensed, 13 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and 14 special teams stops. He has appeared in nine postseason contests (four starts) and has registered 30 tackles (22 solo), 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, six passes defensed, one interception and two special teams stops. Hilton was originally signed by the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2016, out of Mississippi.

Sills, 6-6, 325 pounds, was originally claimed by Indianapolis off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles on August 30, 2023. He has played in 18 career games. Sills spent time on the Colts’ active roster and practice squad last season but did not see game action. In 2023, he saw action in all 17 games for Indianapolis. As a rookie in 2022, Sills appeared in one game with the Eagles after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent on May 6, 2022, out of Oklahoma State.

COLTS RULE OUT 3 STARTERS FOR GAME VS. RAMS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts will be missing three starters Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, coach Shane Steichen said.

Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II, receiver Alec Pierce and right guard Matt Goncalves were all ruled out.

The Colts initially said Moore injured his calf in last weekend’s victory at Tennessee. The team clarified during the week that it was an Achilles tendon injury. Moore did not practice this week after returning an interception for a touchdown against the Titans.

Pierce left last weekend’s game with concussion symptoms after appearing to hit his head while trying to make a leaping catch. He remains in the concussion protocol.

Goncalves, a second-year player in his first season as a full-time starter, will sit out with an injured toe.

Indy signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton earlier this week to help fill the void left by Moore’s absence. Hilton played for first-year Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo in Cincinnati previously.

INDIANA FOOTBALL

NO. 11 INDIANA GETS LATE TOUCHDOWN TO BEAT IOWA, 20-15

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Fernando Mendoza threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt with 1:28 to play to give No. 11 Indiana a 20-15 win over Iowa on Saturday.

Mendoza connected with Sarratt, who had six catches for 132 yards, on a slant route down the left side and Sarratt broke the tackle attempt of Iowa’s Deshaun Lee on his way to the touchdown.

Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which came into the game ranked second nationally in total offense and scoring offense, was held to 337 yards and its lowest scoring output of the season. But the Hoosiers got two touchdown passes from Mendoza, who threw for 233 yards, and two field goals from Nico Radicic.

Iowa (3-2, 1-1) had a chance to break a 13-13 tie with 2:01 to play, but Drew Stevens missed a 42-yard field goal.

After Indiana stopped Iowa on its final possession, Mendoza ran off the last seconds of the game by sprinting into the end zone, where he was tackled for a safety.

Indiana took an early 7-0 lead. An interception by Amare Ferrell on the third offensive play of the game gave the Hoosiers the ball at Iowa’s 24-yard line, and they quickly converted with Mendoza’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr.

Stevens kicked 40-yard field goal later in the first quarter and the Hawkeyes took a 10-7 lead in the final minute of the first half on Mark Gronowski’s 3-yard touchdown run. The Hoosiers tied the game at 10 on Radicic’s 46-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.

It was Iowa’s 11th consecutive loss against a ranked opponent.

Gronowski injured

Gronowski left the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent lower leg injury.

Gronowski, who transferred to Iowa after winning two FCS national championships at South Dakota State, was injured on a fourth-quarter run after completing 19 of 25 passes for 144 yards. He was replaced by Hank Brown, who was 5 of 13 for 48 yards.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

IRISH ROLL IN VICTORY AT ARKANSAS

The University of Notre Dame football team (2-2) scored touchdowns in all six first-half drives as the Irish won in dominating fashion 56-13 at Arkansas (2-3) in the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Jeremiyah Love scored two rushing and two receiving touchdowns in the first half, becoming the first Notre Dame player in the last 30 years to find the endzone four times in a single half. Freshman quarterback CJ Carr threw for a career-high 354 yards and four touchdowns as Notre Dame scored 42 points and recorded 420 yards of total offense in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Arkansas won the toss and elected to receive first. On the third play of the game, the Razorbacks completed a 33-yard pass over the middle to the Notre Dame 28-yard line to set themselves up in field goal range. Arkansas struck first with a 39-yard field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.

On the first offensive series for Notre Dame, CJ Carr tossed two completions of 20 or more yards, first finding Malachi Fields over the middle for 21 before hooking up with Jeremiyah Love for 25 yards on a corner route that put the Irish in enemy territory early. Love capped off the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Notre Dame on top 7-3.

After the defense forced an Arkansas three-and-out, the Irish drove right down the field again. A 22-yard pass from Carr to Will Pauling followed by a 20-yard rush from Jadarian Price made it first and goal for Notre Dame. Two plays later, Carr found Love in the flat, who caught the ball, spun out of a tackle and trotted into the endzone for his second touchdown in as many drives.

Notre Dame made it a third-straight touchdown drive as Carr found Will Pauling over the middle for a 23-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-10. It was the first touchdown in an Irish uniform for Pauling.

The Irish offensive attack wasn’t done yet. After the Notre Dame defense forced another Razorback punt, Love scored his third touchdown in the half, catching a 34-yard screen pass and dashing into the endzone untouched behind a wall of offensive lineman

That wouldn’t be the last time Love found the endzone in the first half. After an Arkansas field goal, Notre Dame put together a 12-play, 75-yard drive, completed by a three-yard rushing touchdown for Love. The junior running back became the first Notre Dame player in the last 30 years to have two rushing and two receiving touchdowns in the first half.

After kicking the ball off to Arkansas, Adon Shuler made his presence felt, forcing a fumble on the first play of the Arkansas drive that was recovered by Devonta Smith, giving the potent Irish offense another chance to score before half. And so they did. After a first down throw to Jordan Faison, Carr found Price, who made a couple of moves and scampered in for a 34-yard touchdown catch for the sixth Irish touchdown of the first half. Notre Dame’s lead was 42-13 going into the locker room.

Facing fourth down on the opening drive of the second half, Notre Dame faked the punt, as Faison found Fields wide open streaking across the middle for 40-yards, setting up a first down in Razorback territory. The Irish scored minutes later as Price found paydirt from 16-yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the day to increase the Notre Dame lead to 36. The Irish led 49-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Notre Dame started to substitute more extensively in the fourth quarter. Matt Jeffrey hauled in his first career reception, a 37-yard strike from Kenny Minchey for a first down. Aneyas Williams would go on to score his first touchdown of the season, bouncing off a defender and strolling into the endzone from 17-yards out for the fourth rushing touchdown of the game for Notre Dame.

On Arkansas’ next drive, Luke Talich recorded his first interception of the season, high pointing the ball in the endzone to give the Irish the ball back, where they ran out the clock to secure the 56-13 win.

BUTLER FOOTBALL

ANDREW AND COX CONNECT IN CLOSING MINUTES TO GIVE BUTLER 31-28 HOMECOMING WIN

Archie Cox took a short pass, broke a tackle and sprinted 48 yards for the deciding score with 1:47 remaining on the clock as Butler captured a 31-28 Homecoming win over Marist Saturday afternoon.

Butler quarterback Reagan Andrew returned to action for the Bulldogs after missing the last two games. He tossed three touchdown passes and combined for 151 yards through the air and 57 yards rushing.

With the win, Butler is now 3-2 on the season. Marist falls to 2-2. It was the Pioneer Football League opener for both teams.

LINES OF SCRIMMAGE:

Marist took its first lead of the contest with 13:20 remaining in the game as Sonny Mannino’s touchdown toss to Devin Kennedy gave the Red Foxes a 21-17 lead.

Each team scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, trading the lead back and forth until Cox’s score.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first as Andrew connected with Cameron Heald from six yards out late in the first quarter. That touchdown came after Butler stopped Marist on fourth down from the three-yard line as the Red Foxes could not finish a 16-play, 62-yard drive.

The Bulldogs held a 14-7 halftime advantage.

Marist’s first-half score came on a fumble recovery and 40-yard return from Matt Bonczek that tied the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

Butler had a 225-21 edge in rushing yards Saturday. Butler’s defense limited the Red Foxes to those 21 rushing yards on 23 attempts.

Griffin Caldwell had a 56-yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs. In addition to Cox and Heald, Brady Preston also had a touchdown reception.

Butler’s defense did not allow Marist to convert a third down (0-for-13) during the contest; Marist was 4-for-7 on fourth-down conversions.

Will Mason had an interception, forced fumble and two passed defended for the Bulldogs. Jeremiah Jackson and Mason Armstrong led Butler with seven tackles apiece. Armstrong was one of four Bulldogs to have a sack, joining Jackson Stratton, Jayden Norris and Okemdi Eze.

The Homecoming game had 4,167 fans in attendance.

UP NEXT: Butler’s first road Pioneer Football League contest of the season takes the Bulldogs to Minnesota to face St. Thomas Saturday, Oct. 4. The Bulldogs then return to the Sellick Bowl to host Presbyterian Saturday, Oct. 11; that contest is part of Family Weekend on the Butler campus.

UINDY FOOTBALL

HOUNDS BEST BULLDOGS IN MARQUEE GLVC MATCHUP

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – In a battle of GLVC heavyweights, the No. 22 UIndy football team came out on top of a 30-20 final score Saturday at Truman State University. The Greyhounds racked up more than 500 total yards and punted just once all afternoon.

INS & OUTS

In a contest that featured the top two teams in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll, UIndy generated a big momentum swing late in the first quarter. Already up 7-0, the Hounds got a key third-down stop inside their own 10-yard line to force a decision by their hosts; the Bulldogs chose to kick it on 4th & short but missed the chip shot to remain scoreless.

UIndy took over and quickly flipped the field, getting big chucks from Markez Gillam (25-yard reception) and Juseters Fataki (27-yard rush). The drive resulted in a 34-yard field goal from freshman Andrew Herron, completing a six-point swing that helped the Hounds carry a 10-0 advantage into halftime.

The Hounds tacked up seven more points on the opening possession of the third. On the 10th play of the drive, Sukup found veteran receiver Alonzo Derrick in the end zone to make it 17-zip.

Truman finally got on the board with a kickoff return touchdown, but UIndy answered with another Herron field goal followed by a 67-yard TD burst by Fataki to make it 27-7 late in the third.

UIndy added a final score on Herron’s third FG of the afternoon, upping the lead to 30-14. Still within striking distance in a two-score game, Truman twice took possession of the ball down the stretch but managed just one TD and a failed conversion the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX

– Fataki’s third quarter touchdown marked the second-longest rush for a Greyhound this season. He finished with a career-best 144 rushing yards.

– UIndy punted just one time all afternoon and not until the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

– Sukup compiled an efficient line of 17-for-24 passing for 226 yards. He threw for one TD and ran for another.

– Redshirt-senior Jalen Wilson had a team-high 11 tackles, while Eli Liapis and TJ Easley-Jones were each credited with three pass break-ups.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

NO. 19 MARIAN SHOCKS NO. 5 INDIANA WESLEYAN WITH THRILLING COME FROM BEHIND WIN

INDIANAPOLIS – Seeing the lead change hands seven times in the final 17 minutes on Saturday, the Marian football team completed a come-from-behind upset victory against No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan by a high-octane 52-42 count. Marian got the go-ahead touchdown from Tristan Polk with 45 seconds remaining, and iced the game on a Yassine Falke pick-six as the Knights exact their revenge on the Wildcats to move to 3-1 on the season.

Marian had a strong start to the game, jumping out in front 10-0 on Indiana Wesleyan in the first quarter. The Knights’ defense threw the first punch after Marian punted on their first offensive possession, shutting down the Wildcats’ first series with a fourth-down stand in the red zone. Marian got in a groove on their second series with Keagan La Belle pacing the team to midfield, and after the strong runs, Tristan Polk hit Aidan Wanner on a 51-yard touchdown, striking first on the scoreboard.

Wanner’s first career touchdown was followed by a defensive three-and-out, which Marian would use to turn into points as Kenny Curry converted a career-long 49-yard field goal.

The hot start came to a screeching halt in the second quarter, as Indiana Wesleyan found a groove and gashed Marian’s defense for 21 unanswered points. The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a touchdown run from Ayden Ewing, and after penalties marred the ensuing Marian series, Cameron Morrison plunged in for the go-ahead score for IWU. The Wildcats finished their scoring montage with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Arjun Lothe to Isaac Smith, taking advantage of a missed 50-yard field goal from Curry.

The 21-point surge occurred in less than nine minutes, immediately putting Marian’s backs against the wall. The offense could not match points on their final two series of the half, as a punt and a missed field goal saw the Knights enter the locker room playing from behind 21-10.

After making halftime adjustments, the Knights’ defense made the first of many explosive second half plays, forcing a fumble to end Indiana Wesleyan’s first offensive touch of the third quarter. Luke Swartz and Deon Pettiford made the big hit to knock the ball loose, while Yassine Falke pounced on the loose ball to ignite the offense. Polk engineered an 11-play touchdown drive following the turnover, hitting Ben Uran three times for 53 yards on the series before Keagan La Belle finished the drive with a five-yard touchdown. The defense quickly forced a punt, and Marian responded with the first of four go-ahead touchdowns, as the offense marched 65 yards on seven plays, ending the series with Alijah Price’s first career touchdown run.

Price’s touchdown with 1:27 to play in the third quarter gave Marian a 24-21 lead; however, the lead would be short-lived, with Indiana Wesleyan quickly responding with a 78-yard touchdown pass from Lothe to Blake Brumbaugh. Marian entered the fourth quarter trailing by 28-24 following the long touchdown.

Each team traded punts to start the fourth quarter, with Marian getting the ball at the Wildcat 31 following a strong Charles Vaden return. Starting possession with 13:11 to play, Polk led another scoring drive for the Knights, ending the short-field series with a five-yard touchdown pass to Ben Uran. Uran’s first career score gave the Knights a 31-28 lead, but as the nature of the second half showed, no lead was safe, as the Wildcats answered three minutes later with a 51-yard touchdown from Lothe to Brumbaugh.

The lead changed hands at 35-31 in favor of the Wildcats, but Marian immediately had an answer, as Tristan Polk hit Jake Reichard in stride three plays later on a 74-yard touchdown, giving Marian the lead once more. Now on top 38-35, Marian’s defense did all they could to prevent an Indiana Wesleyan score, forcing a fourth and one as the Wildcats knocked on the red zone. The Wildcats were able to prevail after converting the fourth-down run from the 21, and two plays later, Cameron Morrison ripped another go-ahead score for Indiana Wesleyan, giving the visitors a 42-38 advantage.

Trailing by four with 1:43 to play in the game, Polk got the benefit of a big kick return from Alijah Price, needing to march 55 yards for the game-winning score. The senior quarterback connected with Reichard, Wanner, and Montasi Clay to march into Wildcat territory. Facing a third and five from the 29-yard line, Polk scampered 29 yards through the defense on a designed quarterback draw, plowing into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 45 seconds remaining.

Polk’s go-ahead score would only be one-upped by his own team, as the next play from scrimmage, the Marian defense got in the scoring ledger, with Yassine Falke snagging a 29-yard pick-six to seal the game. Marian would force one final turnover as Logan Carrington picked off Lothe with two seconds remaining, as the defense made the final answer in the Knights’ 52-42 upset victory.

In a game that saw 1040 combined yards of offense between the Knights and Wildcats, it was the Marian defense that made the impact plays in the win, forcing three second half turnovers that resulted in 21 points from takeaways. The defense was led in tackles by three players, with Wyatt Woodall leading the way with 12 stops. JT Downey and Cade Houseman each made 10 stops, and Isaiah Street had a season-best seven total tackles. Logan Carrington would record his fourth interception of the season, while Yassine Falke logged his second career pick-six, recovering two takeaways in the win.

On the offensive side of the ball, Polk netted 324 total yards of offense, passing for 261 while running for another 63. The senior quarterback threw for three touchdowns in a game for the second time in his career, and ran for one more to log his 14th career rushing score. Keagan La Belle ran for 140 yards and one touchdown, and Aidan Wanner was the leading receiver with 95 yards on three catches and a score. Jake Reichard finished 85 yards and one touchdown, and Ben Uran had a career-high five catches for 58 yards and his first career touchdown.

Marian will be on the road for their next two games, opening October on the road at Madonna next Saturday. Kickoff from Livonia is set for 1:00 p.m.

+++TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY+++

_____

Sept. 28

1919 — In the shortest nine-inning game in major league history, 51 minutes, the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1.

1920 — A grand jury indicted eight members of the Chicago White Sox on charges of fixing the 1919 World Series in the “Black Sox Scandal.”

1938 — Gabby Hartnett hit his famous “Homer in the Gloamin’” in the ninth inning against Mace Brown to give the Chicago Cubs a 6-5 victory, their ninth straight, at Wrigley Field. It was a key triumph en route to the Cubs’ NL pennant.

1941 — Ted Williams went 6-for-8 in a doubleheader against the Philadelphia A’s to finish the season with a .406 average. No player has batted .400 since.

1951 — Allie Reynolds pitched his second no-hitter of the season as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox, 8-0, in the opener of a doubleheader. The Yankees clinched the AL pennant with an 11-3 victory in the nightcap.

1960 — Ted Williams homered in his final major league plate appearance, against Baltimore’s Jack Fisher. Williams did not take a curtain call, but he trotted out to left field in the ninth and was replaced immediately by Carroll Hardy and retired to a standing ovation. It was Williams’ 521st career home run. The Red Sox rallied for two runs in the ninth for a 5-4 victory.

1974 — Nolan Ryan pitched his third of seven career no-hitters, striking out 15 batters and beating the Minnesota Twins, 4-0, at Anaheim Stadium.

1975 — Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad and Rollie Fingers of the Oakland A’s combined to no-hit the California Angels, 5-0, on the final day of the season.

1995 — Greg Harris of the Montreal Expos became the first pitcher in major league history to pitch with both hands. Harris faced four batters, two from his usual right side and two from the left, in the ninth inning of a 9-7 loss to Cincinnati.

1997 — San Diego’s Tony Gwynn tied Honus Wagner’s record by winning his eighth NL batting title. Gwynn finished at .372, becoming the first player to win four consecutive NL batting titles since Rogers Hornsby won six straight from 1920-25.

2001 — Alex Rodriguez of Texas hit his 50th homer in an 11-2 victory over Anaheim and became the 20th player to hit 50 homers in a season.

2006 — James Loney tied a franchise record with nine RBIs, including a grand slam and a two-run homer, to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 19-11 victory at Colorado.

2012 — Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds threw the season’s seventh no-hitter, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0. The seven no-hitters matched the modern record (since 1900) for one season, tying 1990 and 1991. Pittsburgh (76-81) assured itself of a 20th consecutive non-winning season with the loss, extending its major North American professional sports record.

2016 — John Jaso hit for the cycle and drove in five runs in Pittsburgh’s 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

2017 — Giancarlo Stanton homered twice to become the first player to hit 59 in a season since 2001, and the Miami Marlins opened the last series of Jeffrey Loria’s tenure as owner by beating the Braves 7-1.

2022 — Aaron Judge ties one of the most hallowed records in baseball – the 61 home runs hit by Roger Maris in 1961, which still stands as the American League record six decades later. He takes Tim Mayza deep with a man on base in the 6th inning of a game at Rogers Centre, breaking a 3 – 3 tie to lead the Yankees to an 8 – 3 win. While three players have exceeded that total in the National League, all were active in the steroids era and their accomplishment has been tainted as a result – which is not the case for Judge.

Sept. 29

1913 — Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators finished the season with 36 victories by virtue of a 1-0 decision over the Philadelphia A’s.

1915 — The Philadelphia Phillies clinched their first NL pennant, beating the Boston Braves, 5-0, behind Grover Alexander’s one-hitter.

1954 — Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz’s long drive to center field and pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes homered off Bob Lemon in the 10th inning to lead the New York Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of the World Series.

1963 — John Paciorek of the Houston Colt .45s, in his only major league appearance, went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored against the New York Mets. A back injury ended his baseball career the next season.

1976 — John Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants pitched a 9-0 no-hitter over the Braves in Atlanta.

It was the first major league pitch Bell had seen. Despite giving up two more homers, Blyleven was the winner when the Twins rallied in the eighth for a 6-5 victory.

1986 — Chicago Cubs rookie Greg Maddux defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 in the City of Brotherly Love. The losing pitcher was his brother, Mike, also a rookie. It was the first time brothers faced each other as rookie pitchers.

2004 — Major League Baseball announces that the Montreal Expos franchise will move to Washington D.C.

2011 — The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL wild card with a stunning rally, overcoming a late seven-run deficit and then beating the New York Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria’s home run in the 12th inning. The Rays’ win came four minutes after Boston blew a one-run lead in the ninth at Baltimore and lost 4-3. The Red Sox held a nine-game lead over the Rays in early September. Boston became the first team to miss the postseason after leading by as many as nine games for a playoff spot entering September.

2011 — Chris Carpenter and St. Louis completed one of the more remarkable comebacks in baseball history, clinching the NL wild card with an 8-0 win over Houston and a later loss by Atlanta. 2013 — On the last day of the season, Miami’s Henderson Alvarez pitched one of baseball’s most bizarre no-hitters. Alvarez celebrated in the on-deck circle when the Marlins score on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0.

2017 — Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon set a new record for RBIs by a leadoff hitter, 101, with a two-run home run in the second inning.
